Chapter 17
A/N: There appears to have been some confusion from the previous chapter, basing on some requests for clarification from my readers, so here's the skinny on Ming and Kit's paternity. Ming is the son of Mr. Intochar with Mrs. Daichapanya while Kit is the son of Mr. Daichapanya with Mrs. Intochar. And not to worry, Kit is not going to be poor just because he is the son of Mr. Daichapanya. Don't forget he is also the son of Mrs. Intochar who is the heiress to the Kreepolrerk fortune. I hope this has cleared up the confusion.
Third Person POV
Harit Daichapanya was sorely tempted to run after his wife to prevent her from entering the black Mercedes with their son but held himself back.
He decided to go home and wait for her return and see what excuse she would give this time when she and Ming got home. She had told him earlier that she was going to the children's section of the library with Ming to encourage him to develop a love for books.
Harit was in the process of unlocking the front door when his phone rang.
It was Diana Kreepolrerk-Intochar. She wanted to meet up with him so that he could interact with their now one year old son.
Harit Daichapanya felt guilty about meeting with Diana but their son had turned a year old a week ago and he was not even able to attend his birthday celebration due to obvious reasons. He should at least make the effort to give him a belated birthday celebration.
He agreed to meet up with Diana and their son at the same secluded park that he had seen his wife and son meet with someone in a black Mercedes. He told Diana to give him some time because he wanted to buy Kit a birthday cake and a candle in a figure of the number one.
Harit felt bad that he could not buy his son a birthday present. Diana forbade him to do so for fear that Mr. Intochar might question her where it came from. Harit had told her that she could always say that it was she who bought the present for Kit but Diana said that she had told her husband that she and Kit were going to the park and nowhere else.
Harit hurried to the park, the birthday cake in a box in his hand. He and Diana had agreed to meet by the man made lake. He saw Diana sitting on one of the benches making baby talk with Kit who was in a baby stroller. Kit was smiling and making soft baby monosyllables.
When she saw Harit approaching she pulled out a folded blanket from her tote bag and spread it on the soft grass. Then she took Kit out of the baby stroller and both she and Kit sat on the blanket while Harit took out the birthday cake from the box and set it down on the blanket.
Harit took Kit from Diana's arms. Kit started to cry, holding out his arms to his mom so Diana took him back from Harit.
Harit felt a twinge of guilt and sadness that his own son could not recognize him as his father because he was growing up without him.
Diana saw the sad expression on Harit's face and moved close beside him and rubbed his back gently to comfort him.
"You can hold him and play with him while he is sitting on my lap," she said.
Harit did so for a while and then said that it would be best to light the candle on the cake.
He brought out a small box of matches and lighted it and started singing the Happy Birthday song. Diana joined in and after the song she tried to make Kit imitate her by blowing on the candle. Before she could stop him, Kit reached out for the candle and grabbed it and then cried loudly at the pain from the flame.
Harit took the crying Kit from Diana's arms and examined the palm of his hand while Diana took out a bottle of water from her tote bag and started pouring some water on it.
Thankfully, because the contact with the flame was just a split second, Kit's hand did not suffer any burn.
Harit took out the plastic cake cutter from the box that had contained the cake earlier and started cutting the cake. He sliced a tiny piece from it and placed it against Kit's mouth.
Kit looked up at Harit for a few seconds before opening his mouth to eat the cake. Kit seemed to enjoy the cake because he held out his hand and started tapping on Harit's arm to give him some more.
Harit and Diana looked at each other and then smiled lovingly on their son. Harit sliced another tiny piece of cake and this time Kit eagerly opened his mouth for it.
Soon Harit decided that it was time for him to head back home. He held Kit in his arms who now seemed to have gotten used to his presence. He kissed Kit on both cheeks and was about to hand him back to Diana but decided to carry him while Diana pushed the empty stroller towards where she had parked her car.
They had reached the curbside of the park and were about to step down on the street to cross to the parking lot when a black Mercedes stopped in front of them.
Mr. Pirapat Intochar and Mrs. Namtan Daichapanya stepped out of the car with confrontational looks on their faces. They had forgotten that Ming was still inside the black Mercedes.
