What Harm Can Fun Do?
(Okay. I'm gonna put this out a bit before it's supposed to be out and it will only be a chapter a week. Two if I miss a week on accident. Remember, this is Nico's PoV)
"What harm can fun do?" Percy asked, his sea green eyes sparkling in the moonlight. Percy had been my friend for years. What else? I... might have a crush on him. But who cares!? He has Annabeth and I will be forever alone. Or... so I thought.
That was the question that lead us to this old building, that had been abandoned for years. I heard from a ghost, that another ghost heard another ghost saying something about the place being home to a terrible monster.
But we have dealt with many monsters before, how bad could this one be? Supposedly, super bad to scare off all the ghosts in it. The building is a three-story, run down, I'm guessing, play thing-y? Well, it has those double doors and one of those "Hey, kids! Come on in and play!" signs. Someone put "Our game of death!" in red spray paint, to scare everyone.
And this was in the middle of nowhere. Literally no one for miles and miles to come. Just me, Percy, Jason, and somehow Will Solace, a boy from the infirmary. Leo was gonna come, but he had to finish something. He said . . . I gotta go do something. I wish I could come, but with everything on my hands, I don't think I can make it. Which was weird, even for Leo. Ditching us last minute.
I stared at the building, as we got out of the car (Will was driving and he knew how, somehow). "So . . . Uh, why did I ever agree to this?" I asked. Will looked at me, but then closed his door. His golden-like hair getting a type of glow from the moon. A weird glow, kinda. It was like it was glowing a bit too much. Even the sun wouldn't make it glow that much. Something was off.
"Because, Percy called you chicken and you claimed not to be one," Jason clarified. I looked at him, trying to ignore Will's unusually bright hair.
"What do you mean 'I claimed'?" I questioned him. He shrugged and started walking to the door.
Will and Percy followed him. Was I the only one getting a weird vibe from this place? It was almost like it drew me to the place, but in a bad way. Like a moth drawn to a light, eventually getting caught and killed. I hesitantly followed.
Percy looked back and smiled at me. "Aw, is someone getting scared, already?" He asked me. I scowled at him, shaking my head and walking faster, past him.
Percy laughed and jumped one my back. "That's the spirit!" He said, as I stumbled, trying to keep my balance. I told him to get off, he did, but then he dragged me along, right to the front door.
"Hey, Nico. Do you magic thing-y and pick the lock!" Percy said, excitedly. Why was he so excited? I looked at the door. Someone really didn't want anyone in there, there were chains, all around the handle to push the door open. I sighed and got down onto my knees and started picking the lock.
As my hand touched a chain, to move it out the way, I felt a chill go through me. Then, something made the window fog up, after writing came onto it. It was in Italian. It said, "Beware, if you unlock this door. You will get fun and much more. Death, is one. I cannot name all, but if you want to live-" The writing paused, and I paused, waiting for the next word. Suddenly it was all wiped off by a hand, in a black leather glove.
"Um, okay. That was weird. . . . Nico, do you know what it said? You look as pale as . . . well, you look paler than usual," Will said. He wasn't really the person I'd expect to answer first, but he was the son of Apollo, that god loves to talk.
I shook it off. "I . . . I couldn't tell what it said. But it looked like it was trying to tell us to leave," I said. I lied a bit, but I did tell the truth right after, while telling the lie. Right after I said it, something pushed at the doors, as if trying to get out. I stepped back.
It did that for a while, banging on the glass a bit. After it stopped I looked at Jason, Percy, and Will who'd turned as pale as ghosts. They were speechless, so was I. What was that? Was it telling us to leave? Or . . . was something else trying to leave.
