This book is a part of the "Last Minute Variables" universe/series. While you do not have to read all of them to understand one, (or this one) it is helpful. 

Act 1 of this book is a great way to start Chronologically. Once it finishes, I highly recommend reading DV 1 (shameless self promo™) but it is not required to enjoy it.
