CHAPTER 5

Gauri had taken care of herself and her mother since the age of twelve never depending on anyone but herself. She had always had her pride. She accepted charity from anyone, until now. She had never imagined that Omkaraji would assume that he owed her for what she had done for people that she considered family. She vowed to pay back every cent that Omkaraji had paid towards her mum's medical fees and whatever he believed he had paid her for assisting him. She will never allow herself to be in a position that she was in now. Wishing that she had enough money so that she could return his money.

So what she had assumed was acceptance of her by him had actually been payment for services rendered. She could not stay here under those circumstances. If she had no place in Omkara's life, her position in this family had become redundant.

She packed her meagre possessions, she did not have much. She made sure that everything that she had been given as gifts by the various members of the Oberoi family was left behind. She did not want him to add thievery to her collection of crimes. She did not want to be accused of taking his family's heirlooms.

She picked up the Sindhoor lota that Maaji had given her, removed her ring and placed it on the table. She attempted to remove the Mangal Sutra from her neck, but could not. He may not believe that they were married, but she accepted him as her husband.

She was still dressed in the beautiful sarrie that Bhaujai had given her this morning. It was unbelievable that just a few hours ago bhaujai had given her that sarrie to help her create the fantasy that she believed would help Omkaraji. So much had happened since then...

She removed it and placed it on the bed. She would have returned it to her, but she did not want anyone in the family to know that she was leaving. They would somehow convince her that she should stay.

She wrote a note to Omkaraji and placed it under the Shankarji Murthi, in his room. She looked around the room and made sure that everything was in place. This is what he wanted. She brushed the tears from her eyes as she realised that she will never be here again. She would never see Omkaraji again.

She turned and walked out careful that no one sees her leave.
