Chapter 9: Vanessa

I turned  into the yoga plaza with puffy eyes and an upset stomach. Baby Layla was highly upset that she didn't get her weekly sub. I called Chris to let him know that I reached class safely. He's been wanting frequent check-ins lately, but he didn't answer. Knowing he was probably busy getting his shop prepared for the grand opening, I left him a quick voicemail.

Opening the door, the smell of different fragrances made me nauseous. I rushed into the small bathroom stall, fighting against the vomit that was trying to rise to the surface. Closing my eyes, I stood with my back against the door. A dizzy sensation overcame me as I thought about what transpired at Publix. The sound of sneakers screeching across the floor startled me, I wasn't alone anymore. Looking down at my tote bag, I talked myself into skipping today's class. Snuggling up with Chris was what I wanted more than anything right now.

Washing my hands in the sink, I heard the toilet flush. I glanced back at the stranger's shoes, jealous of the fact that her ankles weren't swollen like mine. As I heard the snap of the door unlock, I turned around quickly, reaching for the paper towels. Our eyes met as she made her way to the sink next to me. The slight protrusion of her belly made all the words I had saved for her, disappear at my vocal cords. It was as if someone hit the pause button on a movie. Neither one of us could move.

"I'm....I'm...." she muttered right before she made a dash for the door.

I watched as her red hair that was neatly placed in a ponytail, swayed from side to side. Blinking a few times, I had to make sure I wasn't going crazy. Was Kim just within arm's length of me, and I didn't punch her? Why was she at my yoga class? What loser knocked her up anyway?

I waited a few minutes before I made a beeline for my car. Keeping my head down until I was safely inside, I let out a long exhale. It felt like I had been holding my breath for hours. With my hands trembling, I called Chris multiple times. His voicemail continued to be the only thing I heard after one ring. His phone must have been turned off. This only added to my anxiety and anger.

Feeling the phone vibrate in my hand, I was disappointed to see it was just a text from Paula. Frustrated, I started the engine, eager to get home and interrogate Chris. If he wasn't there, I was going to shut the whole city down looking for him.
