Chapter 26-Christopher
"I can't believe you man!" I yelled at Will, pacing around the kitchen. Vanessa just left and I had no idea of where she was going. A part of me wanted to get in the car and go after her, but I also knew that she needed to cool off.
"She was going to find out sooner or later," he said as he stuffed some eggs in his mouth.
"Not from you! Not like this! She's pregnant, she doesn't need this stress!"
"And what about my sister? Or does she not matter?"
I wanted to tell him to go fuck himself and his sister, but that wouldn't end well.
"I'm not going to go back on forth with you on this!" I yelled.
He put his fork down, "we have things to do, I'll be ready to go in five..."
He got up and put his plate in the sink, walking pass me to go to the guest room. This guy just blew my life up and now he wants to hang out?
"You just gonna stand there?"
I glanced back to see him in jeans and a black t-shirt, tying his shoelaces.
I massaged my temples, this headache was getting the best of me.
"Give me a minute," I said as I walked to the bedroom. The scent of Vanessa's favorite lotion lingering in the air. That's when I noticed the empty drawers. How long was she planning to stay away from me?
After getting dressed I met Will in the living room where he was sitting on the couch, staring at something on his phone.
"We gotta make a pit-stop on our way."
I didn't know where we were going in the first place. Leading the way outside, we got into the truck. I cranked it a few times before it finally started.
"You're about to be a father of two, you need to upgrade your car," he said with a chuckle.
A new car was the furthest thing on my mind.
His phone started chirping in his hand, "I told you I'm on the way! Don't rush me!"
There was a woman's voice coming from the other end.
He hung up, giving me directions to our first destination. The whole time I was thinking about Vanessa, and where she was and who she could be with. Praying that she wasn't with Fred.
"It's this house right here," he said as I pulled into the driveway, "you can keep the car running."
He got out and I watched as he approached the door. The one story house was covered in stucco with a concrete wall in the front. Patches of new grass was scattered across the lawn.
Before he could reach the door, it flew open, a little boy who resembled Will jumped into his arms.
"Daddy!"
He squeezed him, this was a side of Will I never thought I'd see. A slender woman appeared in the doorway with her hand on her hip.
"Where is it?" she asked, not moved by the reunion that was happening in front of her.
"Damn, can I hug my son in peace?"
She folded her arms over her chest, her eyes making their way over to my truck. I looked down quickly, pulling out my phone. I tried calling Vanessa a few times but it kept going to straight to voicemail. This only made me worry more.
I focused my attention back on Will. He was handing the woman a stack of money, his son still clinging to his hip.
That's when I heard it. The sound of fireworks going off, coming from behind me.
Pop. Pop. Pop.
I pushed my seat all the way back and knelt down under the steering wheel until it stopped.
It felt like time stood still. The whole neighborhood was silent.
Slowly, I look through the front window, there was no one in sight. I figured they took cover behind the wall.
Was Will hit? Was this an attempt on his life? I patted myself down to make sure I was good.
The sound of a woman screaming pierced through the air.
Without thinking I got out of the truck, the smell of fresh gunpowder following me to the door. Will, with his son still in his arms was covered in blood. The little boy laying lifeless, his eyes fixated on the sky. My legs could no longer support my weight, I fell back against the wall.
"This wasn't suppose to happen!" the woman screamed. Tears flowing from her eyes as she laid on the floor in the fetal position.
Red circles filled with blood, tainted the sky blue t-shirt that his son wore. The multi-colored dinosaurs were barely visible.
I was speechless, on the brink of breaking down when I heard sirens in the distance. It was as if the switch had been turned back on for Will.
He stood up, his son still in his arms and swiftly made his way to the truck. I managed to get up and follow behind him, taking a deep breath when I closed door. My mind was racing and I didn't want to say the wrong thing.
"What....what happened man?"
"Just drive Chris! Now!"
I backed out of the driveway seeing a few people gathered outside on their lawns, cellphones in hand.
"Your son is he...."
"He's gone," he said as he looked down. His face expressionless.
As I pulled up to a red light, I glanced down to see blood oozing from underneath his t-shirt.
"You gotta take another way, i'll tell you where to go." His voice was weak.
Swerving in and out of lanes I heard Will praying to himself.
As soon as he said amen he looked over at me, "we're going to war."
