Chapter 12: Present
"Do we have to go?" whined the adorable Branson.
The grandma pushed her big glasses up her sharp nose, warmly looking at Branson.
"Why don't you go say bye to them and see if they go anywhere close to your school."
She still thinks we are younger kids.
He walks over to us, head hanging low. "Bye guys.."
"Bye buddy." I whisper, stirring his hair and he looks up, crashing against me.
I'm not used to people giving me hugs, so at first I freeze and go wide eyed, but then I loosen up and bend down to give him a better, proper hug.
"You're gonna get cooties!" Jokes butt hurt jerk.
He pulls away, smiling. "But I like her cooties." Branson hugs butt hurt jerk who whispers something in his ear, which of course I can't hear.
"Ready to go?" He asks me as the grandma leaves with Branson. I sigh and nod.
I hope I'll see him again sometime.
"You like that kid?" Butt hurt asks walking beside me towards his car.
"Yeah." I say. "He isn't bad. Do you?"
Butt hurt jerk scoffs. "He was so annoying." I turn and give him a glare. "I'm kidding! Goodness, and he's pretty cool."
"I like him even more than I do because he insulted you!" I tease.
"Yeah, yeah." He rolls his eyes, turning up the music before I can say anything.
I roll my eyes. "The only reason you turned the music up that loud is because you wouldn't have a good comeback!"
He hears me, I can tell but instead he says, "Can't hear you!"
Jerk.
***
"See ya, cupcake!" He says, parking in my driveway behind my mom's car.
"Bye jerk." I say. "Wait. . ." I turn to look at him.
"Yeah?" He looks at me.
"Wanna meet my best friend?" I offer.
He turns down the radio a few notches. "Who?"
I grin. "Netflix."
***
"This is my humble home." I say in a deep voice.
He looks around, and I suddenly feel very alert to old trash sitting on the table of our living room and the dirty towel- Austin's- sits on the floor.
"Sorry about the mess, my stupid brother lives like a slob." I pick up the dirty towel with my nose wrinkled. I was nervous having him here- this was the first time a friend, my first really ever friend, at my house.
Great way to top it, Ivory, messy house makes them love it here! My subconscious sarcastically remarks.
Shut up, I shoot at her; my subconscious.
"It's okay." He says. "You should see my room."
I cringe. "Ew, I'd rather not!"
He smirks. "You'd love to be in my room, don't deny it."
"The only thing you need to deny is," I plop down next to him. "is that I'd actually want to go in your room."
He laughs and I join in for a moment until I hear a door open.
Crap.
"Ivory?" A voice says.
Butt hurt jerk freezes, but I start to turn on Netflix.
"Ivory- Butt hurt jerk?" Austin asks.
"His names Collins," I inform. "I only call him that, buddy."
Butt hurt jerk seems amused by this, but he turns towards my brother. "Hey Austin, what's up?"
My brother replies. "For you guys to keep it down. Mom's asleep."
"Yes sir." I give him a solute.
Austin rolls his eyes. "How was the date?"
Are you kidding me?
"Date?" Butt hurt jerk asks beside me.
"Shut up, Austin. I told you guys it wasn't a date!" I glare at him, silently telling him to not push it.
"Whatever." He shrugs and walks away.
I sink lower in the couch. But, of course, Austin pokes his head in. "Only watch the TV, nothing else you pervs!"
"Oh God." I groan, putting my hands in my face. "I'm sorry, jerk, my brother is. . .I don't know what he is really."
He laughs. "It's fine. Mine would be crazy too, you'd be the first girl at my house."
I smile. "You're the first guy at my house. And my first friend." I add the last part.
I start a movie. "What is this?" He asks.
"Have you never seen it!?!?" I ask, whipping my head towards him.
He stares at the movie, thinking. "No, what is it?"
I stare at him blankly. He groans. "Don't look at me like that, cupcake. Just tell me what it's called?"
"The Breakfast Club," I say.
He gives me a look. "That's the name?"
"Yep." I say, watching the TV.
"And it's about," he furrows his eyebrows. "what exactly? A movie about breakfast?"
I look at him. "If you won't stop talking, you won't be able to figure out what's it's about."
He puts his hands up in surrender. "Sorry cupcake."
"Should be." I grumble and we watch the movie I love.
***
"What did you think of it?" I ask, looking at him who is wide eyed.
"It. . .It was pretty good!" He says. "But it can't end like that!"
I shrug. "It did."
He frowns, shaking his head. "It. .I need to know more!"
I laugh. "Told you it was a good movie "
"It was." He agrees. "Hey where's your bathroom?"
I tell him the directions and he gets up and walks towards my directions.
I yawn, laying down on the couch. I've slept on this couch so many times, it's comfy.
My eyes seem to get heavier and heavier. Last thing I remember before I fall asleep, I hear footsteps come down stairs.
***
I wake up on the couch, a note on the table. I grab it and with one eye squinted from the sunlight in through the curtains. It said:
Hey Cupcake, you were asleep so I left you be. I would've carried you to your room, but you'd probably wake up and think I was a murderer again. Anyways, I hope you LOVE my present I gave you! ;)
-Butt hurt jerk!
I yawn, stretching. What the heck is he talking about? I look at where the note was to see a black sharpie sitting on the table. No, it's my sharpie. The same sharpie I used to draw on his face.
Oh goodness.
I get up way too fast, suddenly dizzy. I put a hand on the near wall and then walking towards the bathroom. I flick on the light, my eyes squinting at the bright light.
First thing I notice is my bed head- well couch head. Never mind, that sounds weird. . .
Second thing I notice that I have black drawing all over my face. I curse at him, even though he isn't here.
I look at my cheek and sure enough there is a. . . the same thing I put on his cheek.
Gross.
My brother walks in. "Morning-" he laughs. "Your boyfriend do that to you?"
I get a wash rag and put soap and water on it. "He isn't my boyfriend, Austin." I start cleaning my face.
"Sure, sure." He says, walking towards the kitchen.
"I'm not lying!" I yell towards him.
"Whatever helps you sleep at night!" He yells back.
I roll my eyes, scrubbing the dirty things off my face. My brother is so weird. One moment he is protective and says not to do anything with butt hurt jerk (which I so wouldn't, except tease him) and the next he is carefree that butt hurt jerk drew all this stuff on my face.
I sigh after all the black sharpie is off, except my face is very red.
Jerk.
I sit on my couch, sighing and I turn on Netflix. My phone goes off, telling me I got a text.
Who would text me? My mom's in bed still and my brother is in the kitchen, cooking.
Yes, I only have two contacts.
I look at the text and it's an unknown number.
-Hey babe, it read.
What. The. Heck.
I reply, who are you?
The person replied almost automatically. How'd you like your present, cupcake?
Butt hurt jerk?
Collins? I send.
I thought you call me butt hurt jerk? Never mind that doesn't matter, did you like my present?
Yes, I loved it. I hope you like the one that will be coming your way.
Can't wait, cupcake. See you at school. Wanna hang out again tonight, I'm bored.
Sure, butt hurt jerk. I send. Give me twenty minutes to get ready.
Hurry up! He send joking, I hope.
I wash my hair and get dressed in a plain shirt and jeans.
"Hey Austin, I'm going to go hang out with. .Collins." I said. "Tell mom I'll be back soon."
"Be lucky we are not grounded anymore." He says.
"I know. But you got an extra week!" I mockingly laugh at him, leaving the room.
Not long after a knock on the door makes me jump.
"Ew." We say at the same time when we see each other.
Well that's new.
