Kao's POV
After I got off the phone with Kaownah, I immediately went in search of Cooheart.
I found him in the living room watching TV with his mom.
"Come join us," Cooheart said when he saw me walk into the living room.
"Yes, do join us, Kao," Mrs. Namwirote seconded Cooheart's invitation.
"Sure, thanks," I said not wanting to sound rude by outright refusing Cooheart's and his mother's offer.
I took the space beside Cooheart on the spacious couch.
Cooheart and his mom were watching the evening news. Some government official was under investigation for some kind of fraud. A suspect in a grocery hold up was being led out of the store in handcuffs by the police. A medical intern was being praised by the city mayor for saving the life of a high ranking official. She was being handed a plaque by the mayor.
Wait... what? No, that can't be her. What is she doing here in Bangkok? The last time I had heard from her was that she was doing her internship in the hospital in our own city, not here in Bangkok. Did she transfer hospitals? But why would she do that?
My thoughts about confronting Cooheart about Kaownah's earlier claim that he had been invited to dinner by Title, whom Kaownah claimed was Cooheart's boyfriend went flying out the window.
My thoughts traveled back to a year ago when Jennie and I were dating and were very much in love. We were next door neighbors. Her mom and my mom were close friends.
Although she was three years older than I was, her parents and my parents approved of our relationship.
Our relationship ended when she started her medical internship at the Golden Sunrise Community Hospital, the major and biggest hospital in our city. (A/N: This is a fictitious name for a hospital. If such a hospital exists, it is pure coincidence.)
"Will you excuse me for a few minutes?" I addressed Cooheart and Mrs. Namwirote.
"Of course," they replied simultaneously.
I went to my room and closed the door. Then I went through my list of contacts. Of course her name was still there. I had never deleted her from my list of contacts. I had no reason to. We were still friends.
I tapped on her number. I hated myself for how my heartbeat went faster than usual while I waited for her to take my call. But then again it had been more than a year since we last talked so of course I would feel a little anxious.
I felt a bit let down when after several rings my call eventually got directed to her voicemail.
I almost jumped when I heard a knock on my door. I went to open it.
"Hey," said Cooheart, "I just wanted to say good night."
"This early?" I asked.
"Yes," he replied. "I received a call just now from....."
"Title?" I interrupted, remembering how I still needed to confront him about Kaownah's claim earlier that Title was Cooheart's boyfriend which was impossible because I was Cooheart's boyfriend, unless Cooheart was playing both of us.
"No, silly goose," Cooheart said, "my physical therapist, Singto, called to ask if he could come early tomorrow morning right after breakfast instead of in the afternoon and I said it was okay for him to come ahead of schedule."
"Did he explain why he needed to come ahead of schedule?" I asked.
"No," Cooheart replied. "It doesn't matter to me. Actually I prefer to start my therapy session early."
I looked at him pensively, wondering if this was the right moment to confront him about Title. When I just stood staring at him, he turned his wheelchair around saying, "Good night then. I'm turning in."
"No, wait!" I said, grabbing the back handle of his wheelchair.
"What?" he asked turning his head without turning his wheelchair.
I decided it was not the right time to confront him, so I said, "Let me help you to transfer to your bed from your wheelchair."
"There's no need," he said. "I can do it without assistance."
"But I wanna do it anyway," I insisted.
"Very well," Cooheart said, shrugging his shoulder.
I pushed his wheelchair toward the hallway where his folding bed was. An extra mattress had been added to it to make it more comfortable for him to lie on.
"Are you sure you don't wanna sleep on my bed instead?" I asked. "After all it really is your bed. I'm just renting your room from your mother."
"No," said Cooheart.
"Two reasons," he continued, when he saw my raised eyebrow. "First, you're paying for that room and the bed that's in it, so technically that bed is yours not mine. Second, Mom knows that we're in a relationship so she would raise her eyebrows if she sees me sleeping in your room."
Now... now was the time to confront him.
"Are we in a relationship, or are you and Title in a relationship?" I asked, waiting for the palm of his hand to make contact with my face.
When it came, it stung worse than I had expected.
"Why would you accuse me of something like that?" he asked, his cheeks redder than mine where he had hit me.
"Kaownah had called me earlier to tell me that he had just come from dinner with your boyfriend and your boyfriend's mom. Those were his words. And when I asked him who was your boyfriend, he said 'Title'. How do you explain that to me." I said, my fingertips nursing the spot where it still stung.
"And you believed Kaownah," Cooheart said in the coldest tone I had never heard him address me before.
"I'm sorry, Coo, I guess I should work on my trust issues with you. It's just that, apart from Title, you have so many other people who want to be near you," I said, waiting for him to deny about the other people, Nicky being one of them.
"You are the only one in my life right now," he said, looking directly into my eyes. "Am I the only one in yours?"
My thoughts instantly flew to my ex-girlfriend Jennie whom I had just tried to talk to earlier. Ex-girlfriend. That's what she was, my ex. She was no longer in my life.
I looked directly into Cooheart's eyes as well.
"Yes, sweetheart, you are the only one in my life," I said, bending to give him a good night kiss.
