Title's POV
I tried not to feel or look self conscious during dinner. Kaownah had insisted on pushing my wheelchair to the dining room even though I had told him that my arms and hands were strong enough to wheel myself there.
He sat directly in front of me and I cursed myself for blushing every time his attention was on me. Thankfully, from time to time my mom would ask him questions and divert his attention from me.
"So, you are working and studying at the same time?" my mom asked Kaownah, admiration very much apparent on her face.
"Yes, ma'am," Kaownah replied.
Then a look of sadness crept into his face as he continued speaking.
"Just after high school, my parents decided to divorce and I stayed with my mom who did not have enough financial resources to send me off to college. So I decided to take a student loan and used it to work for a certificate in physical therapy. By the time I got my certificate my mom remarried and I did not get along with my stepdad, so I moved out and supported myself with the income I was earning from my therapy sessions. Now I am trying to earn a degree in Business Management and using my income to pay for my tuition."
"You are such an admirable young man," my mother declared, placing her hand lightly on Kaownah's shoulder.
"Thank you," Kaownah replied with a shy smile.
Suddenly his attention turned to me once more.
"So, Title, you probably don't want to relive the whole experience, but would you care to tell me how you got your leg injury? Knowing something about it might help me to tailor my therapy exercises to your therapy needs," Kaownah said, giving me a quizzical look upon noticing the pink tinge creeping up my neck and up to my cheeks.
I was about to open my mouth to speak when he added, "Of course, if you don't want to talk about it, I will respect your wishes."
"Oh, no, no," I said, "it's okay. I had gone on a trip with some cousins and a friend to the River Kwai."
"The friend he's referring to is Cooheart who is the son of the owner of the dormitory where you're staying," my mom interjected.
During my therapy session earlier in the day, Kaownah had happened to mention how where he was staying was not too far from our house so my mom knew that he was staying in Cooheart's mom's dormitory.
"Cooheart? Is that the son's name?" Kaownah's face had taken on a pensive look. Little did I know at that time that he had been entertaining curious thoughts about his rival for P'Kao's attention.
"Yes," my mom replied, "and if I'm not mistaken, he and Title are more than just friends." My mom ended her sentence with a wink at me.
"No, mom! That's not true!" I protested.
Kaownah looked delighted at my mom's false revelation.
"That's wonderful!" Kaownah exclaimed, as if he had not heard my denial.
Sod it, if he was entertaining the thought that I was already in a relationship, I was up shit creek in terms of having any chances with him. He looked all too happy at the thought of me and Cooheart being in a relationship.
I resignedly shoved a forkful of the Mongolian beef into my mouth before reaching for my glass of the red wine that Kaownah had brought.
As soon as Kaownah noticed that I had finished up my glass of wine, he poured some more into it before I could stop him from doing so.
"And then what happened during that trip to the River Kwai?" Kaownah wanted to pursue the topic of how I got my leg injury.
"It was raining hard that day," I said, "I was at the wheel and Cooheart was seating beside me. The roads had turned slippery and the car just ahead of us started to wobble before sliding into the river and as for me, I ended up crashing into an electric pole."
"And your legs hit the area just below the dashboard," Kaownah supplied the ending of my short story.
I just nodded, feeling awful once more, just reliving the whole incident.
Kaownah stayed a while longer after dinner, chatting with me and my mom in the living room. My mom was mostly doing the conversation for me because I was already feeling buzzed from the second glass of wine
Soon Kaownah was looking at the time on his phone.
He stood up from the couch saying, "I had such a lovely evening and I really enjoyed the dinner. Thank you so much, Mrs. Puangmalee. Title, thank you for inviting me here."
"It was our pleasure, Kaownah," my mom replied for me and herself. "We also thank you for your lovely company."
I wheeled myself to the front door beside my mom and Kaownah.
Kaownah turned to me before stepping out.
"I look forward to giving you your therapy sessions on Tuesday, Title," he said, extending his hand to me.
"Me, too," I said, accepting his hand while feeling utterly miserable.
The therapy session was all he was looking forward to on Tuesday. I was nothing more than just a therapy client to him. A source of income to pay for his university tuition, that was all I was to him.
Third Person POV
As soon as Kaownah reached his dorm room, he made a call to Kao.
"You again!" Kao said in greeting when he took Kaownah's call.
Of course Kao was just teasing Kaownah.
"What's up, bud?" Kao asked.
"You'll never guess," Kaownah replied. "I just got back from a lovely dinner of Mongolian beef with Cooheart's boyfriend and Cooheart's boyfriend's mom."
"What the fuck are you talking about?" Kao's voice sounded dark and ominous.
