Shiver me timbers

Have this unfinished but also kinda finished oneshot :))

When the weather gets cold, Tony gets cold. More specifically, his arc gets cold. A cylinder of metal that takes up a huge amount of his thoracic cavity.

If you know anything about metal you know that it gets cold really easily, and when it's introduced to another object it cools that object down with it.

Thus meaning, Tony is freezing.

It had started snowing over an hour ago. He thought, albeit stupidly, that he could get through it without notifying the others or his predicament.

The Avengers. Meaning, Steve, Natasha, Clint and Bruce. Thor spent most of his time off world, Asgard was under attack again and they needed him there.

So the other five were called out for a mission, more of an intelligence mission. All they were ordered to do was lay in wait at a safe house, and report back any signs of 'suspicious activity'.

It seemed like a desk job compared to the missions they're usually sent out on. No battle music. No guns 'a' blazin'. Just quiet, almost domestic, peace.

And cold. Peace and cold.

"Tony, you're up. Grab Clint on your way out" Steve noticed as he walked in from his watch shift.

Tony nodded, not trusting his ability to stop the chattering of his teeth long enough to answer. He climbed out from under his stack of blankets and headed to Clint's room.

He peaked his head in and made eye contact with Clint. A jerk of his head, and Clint was following him to the door. They wrapped up in coats that were way too thin for Tony's liking, and headed into the snow.

"Times up Nat" Clint smiled, helping her up and pushing her back to the house. She glared at him but the grin on her lips gave her away.

"Make sure you stay warm it gets real cold real fast" she said over her shoulder.

"Tell me about it" Tony mumbled, hand moving to massage the stiff muscles around the reactor.

"What was that?" Clint asked, not facing him.

"Nothing" he mumbled. When he was certain Clint wasn't going to push he turned his attention back to lookout. He still wasn't sure what they were supposed to be looking for but Fury said they would probably know it when they see it.

He checked his watch, only fifteen minutes had gone by and he was already in actual pain from the cold. The arc shifted with every shallow breath and froze everything it brushed against.

"You good man? you're breathing pretty heavily," Clint asked after about a half hour.

"a," he cleared his throat, "all good Legolas, focus on the mission"

"but Tony the missions boring," Clint whined.

"isn't this what you used to do all the time? you should be used to this" His hand was going numb from gripping the ledge he was leaning on, trying to focus on the rough bite of concrete on his hand instead of the pain and cold radiating from his chest.

"just because i'm used to it doesn't mean it's not boring," Clint huffed.

They say in silence for some more time, not a single thing to report. They saw a couple birds that tony shakily compared to Clint.

Clint laughed along but couldn't push down the worry that had rose in him when Tony spoke. His voice wasn't steady, he was always steady.

"god damn when is our shift over I swear it's been three hours already" Tony groaned, trying not to wince as he readjusted himself.

"You could go get Nat and send her back out here, i'm sure she wouldn't mind," Clint suggested, knowing that if Natasha saw what he did she would take his place immediately.

"I cant do that to her, It's fucking freezing out here" He has started to let how cold he was show as his teeth chattered through the sentence.

Clint just rolled his eyes. He admired Tony's selflessness but sometimes it was unbearable.

"Well then I'm going to the bathroom, i'll send Steve out he doesn't feel the cold or something" Clint shrugged as he stood up.

"mhm" Tony acknowledged. He watched Clint leave from his periphery, and sighed. Allowing himself a moment to recognize the cold and try and manage it. He was in the process of moving his hand to massage his arc when Steve walked over.

"Hey Tony, Clint said he needed the bathroom" He took a seat, Clint of course had expressed his concerns. However he knew tony, and he knew that if he verbalized the concerns to Tony he would shut down.

"y-yeah" Tony nodded, a little too enthusiastically.

"it's cold out here isn't it, It doesn't really register for me but I know it's cold," Steve mentioned, trying to get Tony to admit what was wrong.

"A bit, yeah." he confirmed, teeth chattering.

They sat for a moment before Bruce came barreling through the snow. "It's the arc isn't it, thermal conductivity, it's freezing you?" He gasped out.

Tony didn't say anything but from the look on his face both of them knew Bruce was right.

"Ok come in your shifts over, i don't think anything's going to happen in this location soon anyway." Steve decided, standing and reaching a hand out for Tony.

Reluctantly Tony grabbed onto his hand and tried to stand up. He failed to bite back a whimper when the movement pulled at the skin around his arc.

"Tony does it hurt too?" Bruce asked, brows furrowing.

"uh, a little bit" He admitted tears making the world look blurry.

"God Tony why didn't you say anything?" Steve asked, practically carrying Tony into the House.

"Clint heat up the hot water bottle please" Bruce asked, watching as Steve laid tony on the couch.

Natasha ran over with a stack of blankets and started to wrap them around Tony, who's eyes were squeezed shut.

"I wish I had something to give you for the pain" Bruce winced.

"i-it's fine Brucie, i'll be o-okay" He shivered.

Clint came back and slipped the hot water bottle onto Tony's chest, watching as the genius sighed and finally relaxed.

Before Tony fell completely asleep he heard one of them say, "When are you going to learn that asking us for help isn't a bad thing?"
