Alternate name:
Chapter Seventeen: Orochimaru and Confession Attempt Number Two!
I scrutinised the grass ninja with narrowed eyes. There was something strange about her.
"What are you talking about?" I said through gritted teeth, a feeling that something was very, very wrong settling in my stomach.
"Ahh, now, megami, don't even try to fool me. I know of your true identity." she said, and I flinched as Izanami hissed in the back of my head.
'Get out of here, kid!' I was shocked. Izanami sounded distressed, and I could feel the muscles of my arms twitching with her roiling presence.
I ignored her order, "Who the hell are you?"
'Ever heard the saying 'curiosity killed the cat'?! Get away from here! Now!' the goddess growled in my head, her tone slightly pleading.
"Ah, me?" the woman asked, mellow, a smirk on her face as her fingers dug into her hairline. I watched, in horrid fascination, as she tore part of her face to reveal a golden, snake-like eye, "I am your soon-to-be master."
I shook my head, confused. Master?! What the hell was she talking about? She was crazy!
'You can't take him on!! He's bad news, go back to your team, now!!'
My head shook faster, as I realised. He felt like death. It was a constant presence around him... and I had seen him before. "No!" I looked up at the smirking snake-human, him who I saw both in the Land of Waves and on team seven's last mission, "What do you want from me?!"
He tilted his head to the side with a smile, "Nothing... yet. No, you are not the prize for now. I want something much more... visionary from these exams." he fell silent, but that silence spoke a thousand words, coupled with the smirk on his face. Our eyes merely watched each other, before he spoke again, "But remember this name, my name. I should think you've heard it before... since I am Orochimaru, one of the three legendary sannin."
He then disappeared, leaving me to stare at the spot where he was in confusion.
Pulling myself together, I quickly hurried back to where I was supposed to meet Sasuke and the others, a frown on my face.
What did he mean, something 'visionary'? Unless he meant a person... but the only thing I could think of was visual jutsu, and the only two I could think of were the Byakugan, and the... Sharingan... Oh God.
I sped up on my way, having gone further than I thought. My heart kicked into gear. If he wanted the Byakugan, he could get it from the village, from one of the elder Hyuuga, who would have better control over it. But for the sharingan... only Sasuke.
'Izanami?' I asked, attempting distraction, 'What was that? That feeling of death?'
I could feel her disgust, 'My last vessel named it 'Corpse's musk'. The concentration of the scent of death around a person tells how many innocent lives they have taken.' she growled, 'Now do you see why I told you to get away?!'
'Yes.' I was shaken, 'Yes, I do.'
When I got to the meeting place, they weren't there, but that didn't surprise me. I didn't expect them to be back so soon, since my confrontation didn't take that long. But I still couldn't help but worry. It wouldn't take Orochimaru that long to reach them and take Sasuke. I don't know what he is planning to do, but I know that I'm going to stop it.
'It's one of the three sannin, kid! You don't stand a chance, get out of here while you still can!" Izanami was yelling in my mind, making me wince as I clenched my fists to stop them shaking. She was right, I could never hope to defeat Orochimaru, but hopefully I could hold him long enough for all of them to get away.
I swallowed my fear and started to run again. I couldn't wait around any longer, he could already have reached him!
I pushed off of the tree stump, my impatient pacing transforming into a sprint through the undergrowth. I followed the sixth sense that rang in my ears- it was almost as if a ringing started up in my ears if I went in the wrong direction. I could feel that I was getting closer to him, and suddenly- something caught on my foot and sent me sprawling into someone else.
"Oww..." the person I collapsed on top of let out a groan, and I picked something up and stuffed it in my kunai pouch, before shrieking and knocking the person out.
"Pervert!!" I yelled, leaping up and away, into someone else. I rose my hand to knock them out too, but they caught my shaking wrist.
"Sachi! It's me! Calm down!" Sasuke exclaimed, placing his other hand awkwardly on my shoulder. I sucked in a gasp, relief oozing into my bloodstream as I scrutinised him, confirming that he was fine.
"Oh thank God..." I mumbled, my hand reaching to touch him, make sure he was real. His cheeks pinkened, and someone clearing their throat snapped me out of my daze. I flushed and quickly turned away, seeing no doubt the comrade of the boy I knocked unconscious, looking annoyed.
"You're going to pay for knocking out my teammate-" he exclaimed, being cut off by my foot in his face. I blinked down at my appendage; I never realised that I was this flexible. I looked around the unconscious people. Or this strong.
I then quickly smacked the other one in the face a few times, before he could say anything annoying like "How dare you!!" or "Imma go apeshit on your ass!!". Although, that last one's kinda funny.
My teammates searched the three unconscious shinobi, coming up blank, much to their frustration.
"They don't even have a scroll! What a waste of time!" Sakura exclaimed. The males of our squad looked irritated.
"Well, let's go-"
"Wait, I gotta go take a leak again first." Naruto said, hopping over some hedges and disappearing. Sakura glowered at me while combing her fingers through her hair, then her eyes widened.
"I left something back at camp! I'll just go get it, you guys wait here!" She exclaimed, running off in the direction we came. I sighed, and sat down on the exposed root of a nearby tree. Sasuke soon followed my lead, sitting down opposite me on the ground. An awkward silence cloaked us, fragile but tired- what sleep we did get yesterday was restless and short-lived.
"Sachi?" I looked over to see Sasuke, once again looking at me with that indecisive expression.
"Yeah?" I asked. He scratched the back of his neck in a very Naruto-like fashion. He stood up and came over to me, crouching down so he was on eye level. My heart sped up minutely, my cheeks starting to heat up. I leaned back a little instinctively.
"I have something important to tell you-"
I held a hand up, slight disappointment in my gut, "Look, Sasuke, I have a feeling I know what you're going to say."
His face pinkened, "Y-you do?"
I grinned, and stood up, placing something in his lap. "I get that you love pickles, so I took the jar of them that that guy we got the scroll from had! What luck, huh?"
He just blinked at me, then stood, his face a bright red as he went back to his corner, his expression somewhat... sulky?
"Sasuke-kun! I'm back!!" Sakura yelled, crashing through the undergrowth. God damn, she is so noisy.
"Well, we better go find another squad and take their scroll. Let's follow the dobe's trail, I'm done waiting." Sasuke said, starting running. I frowned.
"But we don't need another scroll." I told them, confused. Sakura sighed.
"Yes we do, Baka. We have a heaven scroll, so we now need to go get an earth-" I quickly cut her off.
"No, YOU baka, we already have an earth scroll!" I pulled the thing I picked up from the first guy I knocked out earlier from my kunai pouch and showed them. "See! You are the bakas."
I stuck my tongue out as they all fell on their faces. Sasuke was the first to recover, and asked "When did you get that?"
I shrugged, tossing it to him. "I took it from that guy I fell on earlier."
"Why didn't you tell us sooner and save us searching them?!" Sakura screamed.
"You didn't ask!!" I screeched back.
"Well we wouldn't have expected you to have it!!" she yelled. I glared at her, but shrugged, deciding to pull out my trump card once again.
"You're just still jealous that I got to touch Uchiha's butt before you did." I said, dismissively. Sasuke's face reddened, but he didn't have time to dwell on that because he was soon holding Sakura back from attacking me.
"S-Sakura! We need to ignore Sachi's... stupidity-"
I cut Sasuke off, "Hey! I am not stupid. You just wish that there was something more to what I just said, Shady Uchiha!" I teased, unable to stay angry, for some reason, even though he called me stupid. Plus, I think the stutter before was because he was embarassed about what I said, so I should cut him some slack. Sort of.
He flushed red again, and glared at me, before swallowing and turning back to Sakura, "Anyway, we need to find Naruto and get to the tower as soon as possible, which means working together-"
Once again he was cut off by me. I leapt at him and secured my arms tightly around his waist. He gave a startled yell of surprise, before a sudden gust of wind blasted us away from everyone else. We smacked sideways into a tree, causing a jolt of pain to run the course of my spine, and my grasp to break. The wind merely blew harder. I gripped tighter, realising that the wind was merely a tool for somebody to break us apart. That somebody being Orochimaru. The winds stank of death.
"Sasuke, don't let go of me, whatever you do." I grunted, my sense of urgency overpowering the weirdness I felt at saying something like that.
Even so, Sasuke clung to me, "Wasn't planning on it."
The winds suddenly cut out, dropping us on the tree branch, and I slowly pushed away from him a little, my hands against his chest. I surveyed the area, head swivelling, heart pounding in my thorax. This whole place reeked of corpses and vengeful souls. He was here.
"I thought it would be you." I said, in a normal volume of voice since I knew he would hear me. Sasuke looked confused for a moment.
"Ah, it's a pity that we keep crossing paths like this, megami. I have no use for you yet, and I don't want you to think badly of me." he said, that sickening smirk on his lips. I glared at him in disgust.
"I already think badly of you. Anyone who has a corpse's musk like yours can't be a good person, Orochimaru." my throat thickened with tension and fear, his presence making it hard to breathe.
"This is the person you went off to find earlier?!" Sasuke suddenly burst out, and I flinched, having forgotten he was there.
"You're fast to catch on, Sasuke-kun." he licked his lips, "It makes me want you all the more..." (EWWWWWWW I CAN'T BELIEVE I WROTE THAT)
The death scent grew overpowering, drowning me, filling my head and making me dizzy. A powerful burst of ominous chakra from Orochimaru's direction made my knees buckle, and a pair of arms quickly wrapped around me, supporting me. I leaned against him, my vision blurring in and out of focus.
"Sachi! Are you okay?!" the voice in my ear was urgent, worried, and I struggled to remember who it belonged to, my head still pounding. It then snarled, away from me, "What did you do to her?!"
"I merely let her have a taste of my power. Incapacitating her will keep her out of the way." a velvety soft voice said, gentle, so why did the hairs on the back of my neck stand up in warning? "With the next event, she will most likely want to interfere due to her attachment to you, Sasuke-kun. I merely took a precaution."
"Tch." the grunt was annoyed, shocked, and worried, all in one, and the arms put me down, my back supported against the tree's trunk. "You bastard!"
With that, the sounds of battle commenced.

So it was Sachi herself that thwarted this attempt of Sasuke's to confess his feelings. Lol, that Sachi is so unhelpful.
Well, fan, vote, comment, blah :D
