Controlling the Chaos - Five: Establishing Contact

Hannah

Hannah stretched her arms high above her head, lifting onto her toes as she tried to soak in all the natural sunlight. A breeze from the ocean gave the air a spicy smell, but the flowers that were planted outside the wagon and tents was enough to counteract the salt enough that Hannah didn't cinch her nose up. Hannah settled back down when she smelled something else in the air. While she couldn't put a name to them, yet, two distinct smells filled the absence of the sea breeze. Hannah opened her eyes to find that two people were walking towards her and the structure behind her.

"Hullo, mate!" One of the figures called out cheerfully, but not without a hint of wariness in his tone. The man who had spoken had a white v-neck shirt with a dark gray robe with deep green rimming. He had a green ribbon tied around his midsection with white pants and flip flops. Around his neck was a necklace of a heart with hollowed eyes carved into the slants. On top his dirty blonde hair was a green-and-white striped bucket hat. The man had long black wings behind him with a few white secondary and primary feathers along the bottom.

"My name is Puffy, and this is Phil," The other figure said. The first thing Hannah noticed was the woman's mess of creamy white curls that was poorly held down by a red tricorn hat.  Puffy had curling horns in her hair on both sides that showed her sheep Origin. She was wearing a red doublet coat with golden buckles over a white poet shirt. The woman was wearing dark brown trousers tucked into laced up black boots. On her belt was a scabbard with a cutlass sword. Even with the weapon, she was smiling kindly at Hannah with her hands up in a peaceful gesture. "We were wondering who you were. We are more than a little curious why you're here, too. The Origin Isles don't get many visitors."

If that wasn't an understatement. A long time ago, humans hunted down Mobs for their items, and Mobs were usually aggressive and violent. Those times were easy because the two populations simply fought each other when their paths crossed. One day, a Mob (no one knows which) was able to change their form into something humanlike, enough that the Mob was accepted into human society. That Mob and a regular human fell in love, and they birthed a child that was human with supernatural gifts. Magic users (called Evokers in the early days) identified the abilities of that child to be something that wasn't regular magic. It was called an Origin. From that days onwards, more and more children were born with an Origin. The Humane Laws were passed in most countries to protect Mobs in the event that they were Shifters- creatures that could shape-shift into human forms. The laws provided civil rights to Mobs, but humans (who outnumbered Shifters) treated Shifters and Origin holders (collectively known as hybrids) as less than human. The Origin Isles was one of the few places that housed only hybrids, or so Hannah's research said. Not many people knew about the Origin Isles. It was kept a secret that way hunters wouldn't venture to the area to kill them.

"Do not worry. We are not here to cause trouble for anyone of you. In fact, our group is made up of hybrids save for one. But even though he's human, we don't love him any less," Hannah explained with his hands raised up to pacify the two before a fight broke out. Hannah took a deep breath before explaining the lie that she had been told to say should anyone start asking questions. "We're traveling traders. While on our normal trade route, we encountered some troubles on the ocean. The captain of the ship delivered us to the closest landmass, which happens to be your island. We don't mean any harm by it. We would like to stay here until another ship comes. If you need compensation, we can sell you any of the goods we have for half the normal price. We have blaze powder, nether warts, phantom membranes, fermented spider eyes, gunpowder, and our best seller, ghast tears! Don't worry. We don't kill the ghasts. We merely collect what falls into our laps in glass bottles."

"I think we're good for now. Since the island is peaceful, we don't have a need for potions except for emergencies," Phil explained. Hannah kept a smile on her face, but her heart dropped when she heard the words. They were going to bring trouble to the island. If it came down to it, the six of them had the instructions to burn down the entire Origin Isles if that was what it took to capture the traitor. Hannah hoped it wouldn't come down to that. Since she was part Fae, Hannah loved pranking people and generally making life a little harder for people. But that didn't mean Hannah loved destruction. She would rather not have her blood on her hands. Hannah didn't want to destroy something that people had worked on their entire lives. This island was made with the best of intentions, and Hannah didn't want to have that all destroyed because of the Watchers. Her only solace was that the Watchers weren't bad people. This all had a reason.

"We don't mind you staying, though! In fact, you can stay in one of our inns for free. We don't have a need for money here since we just trade or scavenge for materials," Puffy continued with her nice smile. The sheep looked past Hannah towards the wagon and the tent beside it. If Hannah strained her ears, she could hear the boys all laughing- probably at something Tommy said or a naive mistake Foolish made. When Phil and Puffy weren't looking, Hannah twisted her finger behind her back. It took a moment for a growling scream to come out of the tent. Hannah counted two seconds before Tommy came running out of the tent soaked in water. Foolish was stumbling out behind him, and Purpled jogged behind with a groan, the two soaked in as much water as Tommy was.

Puffy and Phil shuffled back in surprise when they saw the boys racing over. Hannah didn't have a chance to side step before Tommy tackled her to the ground. Hannah and Tommy rolled in the ground. Tommy grabbed handfuls of dirt and grass to shove on Hannah's face. Paired with water, Hannah was soon obscured in mud and grass. Foolish locked his arms around Tommy's torso to lift the blonde up with little effort. Tommy squirmed in Foolish's hold while growling and cursing. Purpled squatted down beside Hannah, running a finger along the dirt on his cheeks to write 'pee'. Hannah looked up at Puffy and Phil. "Do you think the inn can handle these guys?"

"Don't forget about us!" Tubbo yelled. Unlike the other three, Tubbo was only splashed with water. Ranboo came out of the tent warily. He was completely dry, and he was staring at everyone who was wet with wide, afraid eyes. Hannah felt bad about almost getting Ranboo hurt. Hannah had made the water spill because she needed the boys to come out of the tent in a chaotic fashion that way Puffy and Phil didn't get too nosy. Inside the wagon were some items that would make them looks like Mages, and they definitely didn't need anyone asking questions about that.

"Uhh... yeah. The inn has been through worse," Phil shook his head. Puffy was staring at Foolish with a slight agape mouth. When he looked at her, Foolish smiled with his razor sharp shark teeth. Most people would flinch away, but Puffy took a step closer. Hannah swallowed uncomfortably. She didn't like what was going on. Did Puffy see something? Did she know that something was off or wrong? Was she suspicious of them already? Hannah couldn't think of anything that Foolish did that would raise any eyebrows. His appearance was odd, sure, but Puffy's stare wasn't in awe or fascination. It was almost... familiarity. Was Puffy their traitor?

"Let's go!" Hannah said, louder than necessary. The boys looked at her curiously, but Puffy had stopped staring so Hannah counted it as a win. She got onto her feet, wiping the mud onto her hands. Tubbo and Ranboo folded the tent up while Purpled packed their things up in the wagon. Foolish kept Tommy secured under his arm. Tommy had long since stopped fighting it, but he kept complaining about it as Puffy and Phil led them down to the main city where the inn was. And everyone who lived on the island. Including their target.
