Prompt request #22 "What do you mean by leaving?"
Song recommendation: My Own by Whittaker
Her eyes began to fall once again, her tired stature faltering slightly as sleep began to overcome her once more. Her head fell slightly alerting her body that it was succumbing to the strong desire to sleep. She forces her eyes to open once more, assuring herself that she would be allowed to rest once Tom was safely home. She gently twisted her wristwatch, checking the time for what seemed like the hundredth time. Her face fell as she read the time.
2:39 AM.
Her composed stature falters slightly. This wasn't the first time this had happened. Tom was at another premiere and more often than not, he would stay for the after party. She would wrestle against her own desire to sleep to ensure that his drunk body met the mattress with safety. However it wasn't always like this. She remembered the days he would come home to her, sober and full of life. It was hard to believe that was not so long ago.
Her mind snapped back into reality at the sound of keys being shakily guided into the lock. Tessa growls at the door, alerting Y/N to the unknown person attempting to enter the building.
"It's alright, Tess." Y/N pats the dog's head reassuringly. She stands to her feet, her legs shaking slightly as she makes her way to the door. She opens it to be greeted with Tom's expressionless gaze. She was immediately greeted with the strong stench of alcohol that had overpowered any decent smell that had previously inhabited his body. She swiftly took his arm and put it over her shoulder in order to carry him to the bed.
"Leave me alone!" Tom slurs loudly, making a weak attempt to stand on his own.
"If I do that, you'll fall." Y/N states calmly.
"I won't fall." Tom stumbles beside Y/N, her body still supporting his weight.
Y/N doesn't bother arguing with Tom, knowing that it will only lead to another fight.
"How much did you drink?" She asks quietly.
"Enough." He snaps, as she lays him down on the bed. He stirs as she places the sheets over him. "I'm not tired."
"You need to sleep." Y/N states.
"Why are you up?" Tom asks in a slurred tone.
"I was packing." Y/N replies in a monotone state.
"Packing?" Tom's eyebrows cave in, clearly confused. "Where are you going?"
"I'm leaving, Tom."
Tom's eyes crease up into a drunk smile at her. "Leaving? Like on vacation?"
"Leaving as in leaving Tom." She explains, not meeting his eyes, but rather focusing on settling him into the bed.
"What do you mean by leaving?" He sits up, his eyes still glassy and distant.
"I'm going to take my things, I'm going to walk out that door...and I'm not going to come back." Y/N explains calmly.
"B-But you can't leave." Tom stumbles, struggling to come to terms with what she was saying.
"Why can't I? Hm? Give me at least one reason to stay." Y/N kneels at the side of his bed, looking up into his eyes. Her eyes glass over as searching deep into his emotionless gaze. "Please."
Tom thinks, she could almost see the thoughts being sifted through his intoxicated brain. After minutes of waiting he simply stopped and looked at her, his eyes still distant but slowly sobering with each word you spoke.
"I need you."
A tear slips down Y/N's cheek and she hangs her head, a light sob passing through her lips. "Need me, huh?"
"Yes, of course I do." Tom takes her hand in his and places a kiss on her knuckles.
Y/N raises her gaze to meet his. She searches his heart for honesty. She searches for admiration. She searches for heartbreak. She searches it for anything. Anything to show her he cares for her. Loves her. But she's sees nothing but an empty pupil and her own reflection.
"Well, I needed you too, Tom," Y/N cried. "I needed you when my parents got a divorce. I needed you when I was sick in hospital. I needed you when I was laid off work and couldn't pay the bills. I needed you when..."
Y/N's hand clamps over her mouth to muffle her sobs and tears streamed down her cheeks.
"I needed you when I lost our baby."
Tom's eyes burned with tears at the thought of their child, the lifeless body that was carried away out of the nursery to never be held again. The one seed of happiness was going to be planted and nurtured by his love and him...gone. There was nothing but sadness and a heart's space of broken, unfulfilled memories.
Y/N retrieves her hand from Tom's grasp and sits it in her lap. "I still loved you, you know. Through it all I still loved you and I still-I still don't know why. You know the only thing that made me want to stay was the thought of you being better. Being the man you promised me you would be. But I've waited long enough, and I have let myself be broken and built up at your will and I have had enough."
"You don't think losing the baby hurt me too?" Tom yells, emotion breaking each syllable. "I have to walk past the room we made specially for her to grow, to learn and to live in everyday knowing I can never hold her in my arms. I can never teach her to read, or ride a bike or protect her from the monster under her bed. I hadn't even held her and I had already let her down."
Y/N's lungs feel as if they are going to collapse. Her throat sears, the icy textured aftermath of crying and yelling. She stands to her feet and stands over Tom's weak frame.
"After the day I lost her, you never told me you loved me. That's when I knew. I knew I had lost you forever. I didn't bury one loved one in that casket...I buried two."
Y/N leans down to Tom's shaking form and places a gentle kiss to his forehead. And with that, she leaves.
