Unwell (Tom Holland)
Requested by Envie_Holland: Y/N has type one diabetes. Tom has to go on a press tour but a day before, Y/N almost faints, but Tom catches her. He doesn't want to leave her but Y/N knows how important the tour is and so she promises to stay with Nikki and Dom on the condition that he goes on the tour. She's getting weaker by the day, until she faints and is taken to hospital by Tom's family. When she wakes up, Tom is there, and they're told that despite them thinking that Y/N's diabetes was why she was fainting, that isn't the reason.
*Please note: as I always say in chapters containing medical issues, I am NOT a doctor, so don't come for me if I have misrepresented type one diabetes in any way lol. That being said, if anyone has type one diabetes or knows anyone who does, please feel free to politely educate others in the comments, and share your experiences if you want to! Thank you, and enjoy xoxo*
"Darling-oh, shit."
"Come on, my love, I'm here, it's okay."
"Open your eyes for me, sweetheart, that's it, come on."
My eyebrows furrowed as an incredibly strong smell filled my nose, my brain recognising it as the smelling salts that we used for this exact reason as my eyes started to flutter open.
"That's it, darling, there we go." The blurred outline of Tom looming over me started to be processed in my mind, my eyes fully opening and the vision of my boyfriend becoming clear a few seconds later as I fully came to.
"What happened?" I mumbled groggily as I looked at my surroundings to see what I was lying on our bathroom floor with Tom's arms wrapped around my body.
"I guess that you had another episode, darling, because I just found you like this. Let's get you sat up." He nodded reassuringly, making me sigh and return the nod as Tom gently sat me up. He rested me against the bathtub, making me swallow thickly as he opened the bottle of energy drink that he was holding before giving it to me. I immediately started to drink it, my eyes fluttering shut in tiredness but also annoyance as I took the bottle away from my lips.
"Better, my love?" Tom checked, his eyes full of concern as he cupped my cheek.
"Give it a minute." I nodded, making him return it as his eyes continued to flick over my face. I had been born with type one diabetes, meaning that my body didn't process glucose properly. It was a condition that I had learned to manage at a young age due to the dangers of what would happen if I didn't, and so I lived with it with no real issues. Luckily, it also wasn't an issue for Tom when we had met and started dating three years ago, my boyfriend always being so supportive that he would go to any doctor appointments that I had when he could, and would even help with site changes if I needed it. Though, recently things had been different. For two or three weeks now, my blood sugar had been going down a lot quicker than it normally did, and because I wasn't used to that, I was struggling to manage it. Since this had started, I had fainted at least twice a week, and it was really starting to worry both me and Tom. Neither of us had any idea what was going on with my chronic illness, I'd never experienced this before, and so tensions were relatively high in our home right now.
"Let's get you up and into the living room, yeah, my love?" Tom checked as he stood up and offered his hands for me to take.
"Yeah. I'm good, I'm okay." I nodded and gave him a reassuring smile, making him return it and pull me to my feet before leaning down and gently kissing me.
I wandered into our kitchen, my lips curling into a smile to greet Tom as he stood at the island with his eyes on his phone.
"How's the packing going, Tommy?" I asked, making him look up at me. He sighed, my boyfriend's eyes wavering as he slid his phone into my pocket.
"Actually, I need to talk to you about that, my love-." Tom stopped talking, his eyebrows furrowing at me as he looked at me. I immediately knew why, my body feeling weaker by the second as suddenly another episode started to hit me harshly.
"Darling, are you okay?" Tom gulped as he took a step forward and gently put his hands on my elbows to keep me steady.
"I, um..." without more warning, my eyes rolled into the back of my head and my legs collapsed from underneath me.
"Woah, shit!" Tom exclaimed as he immediately caught me.
"Okay, love, let's get you sat down, come on." He cooed gently as he swiped my legs from underneath me and picked me up bridal style before carrying me into the living room.
"I'm fine, Tommy, I swear." I sighed as he put me down on the sofa before rushing back into the kitchen to grab an energy drink for me.
"You're fine my arse, darling. This is the second time this week that you've fainted. Come on, drink up." Tom nodded, making me playfully roll my eyes at him as he tilted the bottle up to my lips so that I drank some of it. I pulled the bottle away from my mouth and looked at him.
"You didn't answer my question, Tommy, aren't you meant to be packing?" I asked.
"Nah, darling, I've decided not to go." He shrugged nonchalantly. My eyes widened.
"What do you mean, you've decided not to go? You can't do that, can you?" I scoffed as I sat up and looked at him. His eyes widened too.
"I can, because you're unwell, as you've just proven there." Tom nodded. My eyes wavered, a sigh leaving my lips and my heart falling slightly as I realised what was happening. Tom was meant to be leaving for the 'Uncharted' press tour tomorrow, though it was now obvious that given the recent issues with my diabetes, Tom had decided not to leave. But I already knew that I couldn't let him miss it because of me, and so I had to convince him that I was okay enough for him to leave.
"Tommy, look, I love and appreciate you for wanting to stay home and look after me, but you can't, both of us know how important this press tour is and how excited you are to go on it, you can't throw that away for me." I sighed and shook my head.
"Of course I can, sweetheart. I know that you've lived with this for your whole life but we both know that something is wrong, and I'll never forgive myself if I leave, and you faint or something whilst you're alone." He scoffed.
"And I'll never forgive myself if you miss such an opportunity for me." I nodded. Tom sighed and shook his head.
"Sweetheart-."
"How about we compromise, yeah? I'll go and stay with your parents so that I'm not alone, ON the condition that you go on the press tour." I bargained. Tom looked at me again, his eyebrow raised as he clearly considered my offer.
"You stay with my family for the entire time that I'm gone?" He checked.
"If it makes you feel secure enough to go and leave me, then yes, I will." I nodded. Tom sighed and bit his lip at me.
"...Fine, yes, darling, okay. I'll go, IF you promise to stay with my family for the whole time that I'm not here." He shook his head.
"I promise, Tommy. I won't be alone once." I reassured. He sighed again and chuckled, his head still shaking as he stood up from the sofa.
"I can never say no to you, my love, and you know it." He teased, making me giggle and bite my lip as he headed into our bedroom to start packing for the tour.
~One week later~
I sat in Tom's old bedroom in his parents' house, my eyes on my laptop as I caught up with Tom's interviews from the press tour so far. It had been a week since he had left and I had arrived at his parents', and things weren't going to plan for me. I hadn't told Tom this because I knew that he'd come running home at the first sign of me getting worse, but I'd been getting weaker by the day, to the point where I was having to either eat or drink every hour in order to keep my blood sugar above a dangerously low level. As if on cue, my glucose monitor started to beep. I looked down at it and my eyes immediately widened.
"Oh, shit." I gulped, my heart jumping at how low my levels suddenly were. I shot up from Tom's bed, but that was my first mistake. As soon as I was on my feet, my head started to swim. I immediately collapsed to my knees, my body too weak to even stand as I tried my hardest to crawl to the closed door. After all, if Nikki, Dom, or one of Tom's brothers didn't find me soon, I'd be in trouble. I forced myself up against the door, my body too weak to stand to my feet as I tried to hammer my fists against the door as hard as I could.
"Nikki, Dom! A-anyone, help, please!" I shouted, though the weakness that was quickly taking over meant that I wasn't that loud at all as I tried to get anyone's attention. I collapsed fully to the floor, the last remaining bit of energy leaving my body as my eyes fluttered shut, and the darkness took over.
Tom's P.O.V
Tom ran into the hospital, tears streaming down his face as his heart pounded so harshly that it was making him feel sick. He rushed up to the reception desk, making the receptionist look up at him in shock.
"Which room is Y/N Y/L/N in, I'm her boyfriend, please." He panted heavily.
"Room two-oh-five, just through those doors." She nodded.
"Thank you." Tom gulped before breaking into another sprint. Only a couple of hours ago, Tom had gotten the call from his mum to say that Y/N was in hospital after his dad had found her unconscious on the floor of Tom's bedroom. Tom had instantly recognised this as being another episode, and he had been terrified ever since. None of them had any idea of how long Y/N had been there for, meaning that it could genuinely be too late. Tom was absolutely terrified of losing his girlfriend, especially as he'd left her for the press tour, and so right now he was just praying that she was okay. He got to the hospital room and threw the door open, his eyes immediately wavering at what he saw. His entire family looked up at him, all of them looking solemn as Y/N lay unconscious in the hospital bed with too many tubes to count coming out of her arms and body.
"Oh my god." Tom choked and shook his head as his mum immediately stood up.
"Come on, sweetheart, sit down, it's okay." She cooed, her hands on his arms gently guiding him to sit in the chair next to Y/N's bed. He immediately took Y/N's hands, his eyes glued to her beautiful face as tears continued to stream down his face.
"What happened?" He gulped as he looked at his family.
"Your dad found her on your floor, but we don't know how long she was there before he found her. The doctors said they're going to run some tests, but that's all we have right now. I'm sorry, honey." His mum shook her head as she rested her hand on Tom's shoulder. He choked and looked back at the love of his life, his entire body feeling numb at the thought of losing her as he gently stroked the back of her hand with his thumb.
"You're going to be okay, my love. You're going to be okay." He choked.
Y/N's P.O.V
My eyes fluttered open, the sound of beeping filling my ears as I slowly but surely woke up after what felt like a lifetime. I groaned quietly, my eyes squeezing shut before opening again as I tried to blink away the groggy feeling that was holding my head captive.
"Oh, thank god, darling." My head lulled to the side, my eyebrows furrowing as Tom sat by my bedside. My hand was wrapped in his, tears running down his perfect face as he gave me a broken smile.
"What...what happened? Why aren't you on the press tour, Tommy?" I mumbled weakly.
"My dad found you on my bedroom door, sweetheart. We had no idea how long you'd been there, so we didn't know how bad you'd be when you woke up, if you woke up. You're really sick, darling, so I had to come back, I was so scared that I'd lost you." He sobbed and shook his head. I choked and bit my lip, tears starting to leave my own eyes as I raised my spare hand and gently put it into Tom's curls.
"I'm sorry, Tommy. You didn't sign up for this, you didn't sign up for my illness taking a sudden turn like this." I choked.
"You have no reason to apologise, my love. We're going to get through this, we're going to get to the bottom of what's going on, and you're going to get better." He reassured, making me nod and give him a small smile as I stroked his curls. Suddenly, the door opened, making us both look up as a doctor walked in.
"Ah, Miss Y/L/N, you're awake. How are you feeling?" She smiled.
"Very groggy, and scared. Something is clearly going wrong with my diabetes, and I want to know what it is." I gulped.
"I understand that, but I have a feeling that this news will make you feel a lot better." She nodded. My eyebrows furrowed and I looked at Tom, my boyfriend having the same reaction before we both looked back at the doctor.
"Sorry, what?" Tom scoffed.
"So, whilst it is true that your glucose levels have been dropping quicker than usual recently, this is a temporary issue. Your glucose levels have been dropping quicker than usual, because you're pregnant, Miss Y/L/N." The doctor stated. My eyes widened, my jaw dropping as Tom's eyes also widened. He looked at me.
"You...you're pregnant, love?" He choked. I gulped and shook my head, my mind too shocked to formulate even a single word as I tried to wrap my head around this news.
"I-I don't know, I mean, my period hasn't come yet, but I put that down to my episodes." I scoffed as I looked back at the doctor.
"We have run tests, and can confirm that not only are you pregnant, but that this pregnancy is why your levels have been dropping. So, I'm happy to tell you that with a simple change of diet to effectively manage your levels now that they have to accommodate two of you, you'll be absolutely fine, and so will your baby. I'll get the prenatal dietician to come and see you to discuss these changes, but for now, I'll leave you two to process this news. Congratulations." She nodded before leaving the room. A stunned silence encased Tom and I, our jaws dropped and our eyes widened as we just looked at each other. But then we snapped out of that. Both of us started laughing and crying, Tom shooting to his feet and wrapping his arms around me in a tight hug as we both started to sob into each other's shoulders.
"You're okay! AND we're having a baby! Oh my god, my love!" Tom laughed, making me return it as he pulled back and started to press kisses all over my face.
"I can't believe it! I'm pregnant, Tommy, and I'm not dying! I'm pregnant!" I squealed and shook my head.
"I love you so much, sweetheart, oh my god, I'm so happy!" He exclaimed, making me laugh as he tightly hugged me again. This was beyond amazing, not only was my recent issue not life-threatening like we thought that it had been, but it was all due to me being pregnant. Not only was this change easy enough to manage, but it meant that Tom and I were having a baby. We were starting a family together. And for that, I couldn't wait.
