Unknown fears (Tom Holland)
Requested by adoreayshia: Tom is Y/N's best friend, and they go to an amusement park, where Tom wants to ride the roller coaster. Y/N is terrified of heights, but Tom doesn't know, so they go on. When they come off, Y/N runs away and starts to have a panic attack.
*Please note: this one-shot contains the reader having an anxiety attack, so if that's not something that you can read about right now, please feel free to skip, I'll be back soon with lighter chapters. Thank you, my loves, and stay safe :) xxx*
"Tom, seriously, I'm going to fucking kill you if I fall over." I giggled, my hands holding my best friend's that were covering my eyes as he walked me along to an unknown place.
"I promise that you won't fall because of me, love, you're safe." He chuckled into my ear. The gentle sound admittedly made butterflies flutter in my heart, my mind having been hopelessly in love with the boy since we'd been kids. I was best friends with the internationally famous Tom Holland, and had been since we'd grown up as neighbours. Of course I'd always loved him as more than a friend, but that kind of stuff was hard to navigate at the best of times, let alone when he was away in America for months at a time. Speaking of which, given his schedule, we had one allocated day every break that he had that was dedicated to just us, and neither of us were allowed to cancel. We took it in turns to plan what we'd do on these days, and this time around, it had been Tom's turn. Though he was worrying me with the fact that he still hadn't told - or shown - me where we were going.
"Okay, darling, I'm stopping you now. You ready to open your eyes?" He asked softly.
"More than ready." I scoffed, making him laugh as he removed his hands from over my eyes. I opened them immediately, my pupils widening and my heart jumping in anxiety as I saw where we were. We were at the entrance to a theme park, which itself wasn't an issue. The problem was more all of the fucking massive roller coasters that were daunting me already in the distance. My eyes wavered and I gulped harshly, everything in me trying not to show Tom how scared I was right now. After all, he was clearly so proud of himself for coming up with this. But the truth was that I was terrified of heights, which very much extended to a fear of roller coasters. Despite knowing deep down that my best friend would never make fun of me for such a fact, I had never had a chance to tell him, never been in a situation where I needed to tell him. And so now...I was fucked.
"Surprise! What do you think, sweetheart?" Tom beamed, his arms up in the air and the most beautiful smile on his face as he looked at me for my reaction. I nodded and laughed, both the sound and the smile on my lips completely forced as I tried to keep up the guise that this was an amazing idea. Well, it was, it wasn't Tom's fault that he didn't know about my fear of heights.
"I love it! I'm so excited!" I exclaimed the lie as I tried my hardest to fake my excitement.
"So am I! Come on, I want to try all of the roller coasters!" Tom laughed, making my eyes widen as he took my hand. Oh god, I thought to myself, my heartbeat already speeding up by the second as he started to pull me along, and through the gates of the theme park.
The wind whipped ruthlessly around us, my eyes squeezed shut, my face buried into Tom's shoulder, and my hands holding onto his bicep for dear life as the roller coaster whipped us around the track. Screams left my lips, the sound miles away from Tom's laughs as I dared not open my eyes. My eyes had been practically cemented shut since the moment that we'd gotten into the cart of the roller coaster, but that wasn't stopping my anxiety from getting worse by the second. After all, I still knew that we were hundreds of feet into the air, my eyes being closed and my arms being around Tom's wouldn't change the fact that we would plummet towards certain death if anything was to go wrong with the ride. That fact, and that fact alone, was what was pushing me closer towards a panic attack by the second.
"Woo!" Tom laughed and cheered as the ride came to a stop, making me gulp and peel my eyes open to see that we were back in the safety of the start of the ride. But it was already too late. My heart was racing so harshly in my chest that I felt suffocated, and no matter what I did, I couldn't slow it down.
"Wasn't that amazing, love?! I want to go again." Tom laughed and nodded as he looked at me. My eyes widened and I choked, my hands starting to tremble as the anxiety took a strong hold of me.
"I-I-I can't, Tom." I choked and shook my head, making my best friend's smile dip as I scrambled to stand up from the cart, and put my extremely shaky foot onto the safety of the metal step.
"Darling, are you okay?" I heard Tom call after me as I stumbled down the steps with unsure footing, though I ignored him as my breathing got shallower and more jaded by the second. I felt sick, I felt dizzy, I felt my heart in my throat suffocating me like it never had before. I couldn't breathe, I couldn't think, every inch of me was filling with pins and needles at an alarming rate as I got to a nearby fence, and collapsed against it.
"Sweetheart, shit, talk to me." I recognised the voice as belonging to Tom, though it sounded muffled and so fucking far away as I continued to hyperventilate, and lose more control of my own body by the second.
"Hey, hey, look at me, love." Tom spoke as he crouched down beside my trembling body, making me choke as he gently took my face into his hands to force me to look at him.
"Breathe with me, darling, deep breaths, in through the nose and out through the mouth." He nodded, his eyes flicking worriedly over my face as he started to breathe. I choked again and returned the nod, shaky breaths being taken in through my nose and then released through my lips as I tried my best to follow his lead.
"That's it, my love, you're doing so well, you're okay, I have you, I promise." He cooed, his beautiful chocolate eyes staring lovingly into mine as he continued to guide me through the breathing. My intakes of air continued to be shaky, though I felt my heart rate slowly but surely start to decrease back to a normal speed as I began to steadily gain control back over my hands.
"I-it's working, Tommy, it's working." I nodded and panted.
"Good, I'm glad, you're okay." He cooed, his hands soothingly massaging the skin of my cheeks as he continued to calm me down. I gulped and closed my eyes as my body finally relaxed, making Tom sigh as he sat down next to me and gently took me into his arms.
"What happened, darling? One minute, you were fine, the next, you just weren't." He scoffed and shook his head as he looked down at me. I gulped and timidly returned the gaze.
"I'm sorry, I should have told you before we went on any rides. I'm terrified of heights, Tommy, and that extends to things like massive roller coasters too. I'm so sorry for ruining your day." I sighed and shook my head. His eyes widened.
"What?! No, love, don't apologise, I'm sorry! God, I'm such an idiot, I'm so sorry for putting you in that situation." He sighed and shook his head.
"Except for that you didn't. I should have told you, you didn't know." I reassured.
"Okay, darling, but please don't say that you ruined the day. You didn't at all, and even if you did, there's still plenty of time to go on smaller rides and play games and stuff. How about we do that stuff instead?" He suggested with a kind smile.
"That sounds pretty perfect." I chuckled and nodded, my heart fluttering in my chest as I tried to figure out how I'd gotten such a kind and caring boy as my best friend. Just sucked that he wasn't my boyfriend.
"Come on, love." He smiled, making me giggle and nod as he took my hand and stood up, the boy pulling me up too before we ran further into the theme park to find a more anxiety-friendly ride to go on, or game to play.
