New parents (Arvin Russell)

Requested by matildadaisy: Y/N and Arvin have a baby, and we see the pregnancy, the birth, and their first few days as parents.

*Please note: obviously this is Tom's character from a movie set in the 1960s, in the deep South of America. I have VERY limited knowledge of how much technology they would have had around this time, so I don't know how historically accurate this one-shot will be. That being said, please don't leave pedantic comments about it lol. You're here to read fanfiction, not a historical novel, so please bear that in mind lol. Anyway, thank you and enjoy :)*

*Also just a lil' definition:

Pinard Horn - a type of stethoscope used to listen to the heart rate of a fetus during pregnancy. It is a hollow horn, often made of wood*

I sat on mine and Arvin's porch, my toes gently rocking my body in the rocking chair like I always did when I waited for my husband to get home from work. Except for today, I had something extra exciting to tell him. Arvin and I had married at the age of eighteen, which was three years ago now, with the love of my life giving me the most gorgeous emerald ring in order to make me his. I still wasn't entirely sure how he'd found such a beauty in these parts, but I didn't care. Arvin and I had always known that we wanted babies, many of them too, and since there wasn't much to...stop that...from happening, we figured that when it happened, it happened. But somehow, it hadn't yet. Well...until now. My heart jumped in my chest, my stomach giddy with butterflies as my husband's car pulled onto the dirty patch in front of our house, and he climbed out.

"Hey, darlin'. You okay?" He smiled as he got his bag out of the car. Even after three years married and a year before that of seeing each other, Arvin's beautiful smile, chocolate eyes and hazel curls still made me weak at the knees.

"I'm okay, Arv. How was work?" I asked as my husband walked up our steps and onto the porch.

"Same old, same old. Better now that I'm home with my gorgeous wife." He smiled again. I returned it and bit my lip, my eyes fluttering shut as he leant down and kissed my head before standing back up again and heading into the house. I took a deep breath, my anxiety starting to build, as now was the right time to tell him. I nervously played with my fingers as I followed Arvin into the house, my eyes staying on my husband as he put his bag down on the table.

"So, Arv, I, um...I have something to tell you." I stated.

"Go ahead, doll, I'm all ears." He mumbled as he opened the fridge and grabbed a beer. I gulped and bit my lip.

"S-so, um...I'm not sure if you've noticed, but I haven't bled for the last two months. I didn't think much of it, but then I started to feel nauseous, and that's how mama said that she knew that she was going to have me. So, I went to the doctor, and he thinks..." My voice trailed off as I intently watched Arvin. His eyes widened slightly, his mouth falling open as he looked at me.

"Baby, are you...are you telling me that you're pregnant?" He choked. I nodded as tears started to prick my eyes.

"I am, Arvin. I'm with child." I confirmed. Immediately, my husband dropped his beer and rushed over to me, making me squeal as his arms flew around my waist and he picked me up. Both of us laughed into each other's ears, tears of happiness leaving my eyes as Arvin spun me around.

"We're having a child! Doll, we're going to have a little one!" He exclaimed as he put me back down.

"I know!" I laughed and shook my head, making him smile as he leant down and smashed our lips together. I returned the kiss, my eyes fluttering shut and my hands raising to curl around my husband's neck as I enjoyed the intimate and joyful moment with him. He broke the kiss and touched our foreheads, tears also running down his face as his eyes flicked down to my stomach.

"I'm so excited, baby, I can't wait. Did the doctor say how far along you might be?" He asked.

"Based on the fact that I haven't bled in two months, he guessed about three." I nodded. Arvin returned it and bit his lip, my heart swelling in love as he gently placed the palm of his hand against my stomach.

"Anyway, it don't matter to me how far along you are. All I care about is the fact that there's a baby in there. And I can't wait to meet them." He smiled and shook his head.

"Neither can I, Arv. Neither can I." I giggled as I leant in and kissed him again.

My eyes shot open, a quiet hiss leaving my lips as pain rushed through my bump. I sat up in mine and Arvin's bed, our cabin still shrouded in darkness as I looked down at my six-month-pregnant bump. But the darkness wasn't enough to stop me from seeing the crimson patch on our now dirty sheets. My eyes widened.

"Lord, please, no." I choked before looking at Arvin, the boy still soundly asleep next to me.

"Arv, wake up, baby, wake up." I whispered as I shook my husband's shoulder.

"Mm. What is it, doll?" He mumbled in his sleep, though his eyes stayed closed as he snuggled his face more into the pillow.

"I'm bleeding, Arv, something's wrong with the baby." I choked. His eyes shot open, making me gulp as he immediately sat up and looked down at the sheets.

"Fuck no. The lord is not taking my child today." He spat as he threw the covers back and rushed around to my side of the bed. I desperately tried not to cry even more, my hand protectively clutching my bump as Arvin put his arms around me and picked me up bridal-style. He rushed me out of the house, the morning sun not having risen yet as he gently put me into the car before running around to his side.

"It's going to be okay, baby. I'll take you to the doctor, he'll make sure that everything is okay, and our little one will be just fine." He nodded, my husband looking around frantically to check that the road was clear before reversing out.

"It hurts, Arv, it feels wrong." I choked and shook my head.

"I know, darlin', I know, but it'll be okay. The lord will have to take me too if he's going to take our child." He mumbled, making me take deep breaths as he put his hand on my thigh. Arvin drove us the short distance to the doctor's house, the car jolting to a stop as Arvin's door flew open. Once again, he gently lifted me up, my husband carrying me bridal-style to the door before hammering his fist against it.

"Doctor, it's Arvin Russell! My wife needs help, please, mister!" He yelled, tears never stopping streaming down my face at the pain that I was in. Within seconds, the door opened to reveal the doctor looking at us with furrowed eyebrows.

"Boy, what are you doing here, God himself hasn't even risen yet-."

"It's the baby, mister, I'm bleeding. Please." I choked and shook my head. His eyes widened.

"Shit, alright, come in, come in. Put her on the table there, Arvin." The doctor instructed, making Arvin nod as he carried me in after the doctor. He gently laid me down on the table, my heart racing in anxiety and fear that the doctor would put the Pinard horn to my bump...and not hear a heartbeat. I didn't know if I'd survive if that happened, I couldn't lose our child. Not now.

"I'm just going to have a look here, Y/N. Arvin, look away, this isn't proper for you to see." The doctor spoke as he pulled my nightgown up to my knees.

"I'm right here, baby, I'm right here." Arvin shook his head, making me choke and look up at him as he tightly gripped my hand and started to gently play with my hair with his spare hand. I squeezed my eyes shut, a cry of pain and discomfort leaving my lips as the doctor examined me.

"Everything seems to be intact, Y/N. Let me check the heartbeat, and if that's strong and proper, your baby is okay." The doctor spoke, both Arvin and I watching him as he got the Pinard horn and put it to my bump. I gulped and looked at him, my entire body going numb in fear of what he would say. Whilst this pregnancy hadn't been planned, Arvin and I knew every time that we had sex that I could get pregnant, and we had of course been over the moon to find out that I was carrying this child. So if I lost them now, when I was only a couple of months away from bringing them into this world, well...I'd never forgive myself. The doctor's eyebrows as he listened, making me gulp harshly.

"Do you hear anything, doctor? Please tell me that you hear something." Arvin choked. The doctor still said nothing, making me choke and my heart jump in my chest as I watched his facial expressions carefully. After a moment, he straightened back up and looked at us.

"I hear a heartbeat." He confirmed. Both Arvin and I sighed heavily in relief, my eyes fluttering shut and tears relentlessly leaving them at the doctor confirming that our baby was okay.

"Oh my god. Thank you, lord, thank you." Arvin choked and shook his head as he kissed my hair.

"W-why am I bleeding then, doctor? I didn't think that you were meant to bleed when you were with child." I gulped and shook my head.

"Sometimes it just happens, nobody knows why. Sometimes, bleeding for pregnant women doesn't mean a miscarriage. They're starting to call it 'spotting' in the big cities, but that's a little too fancy for me. The point is, though, that your baby is okay. I want you to take it easy for the next week, but you both should be fine." He nodded.

"Thank you so much, doctor, thank you so much." Arvin spoke, the doctor giving us a small smile as my husband gently sat me up, and picked me up again from the table.

"Where in the holy hell is ARVIN?!" I screamed, my eyes squeezing shut and my hair sticking to my forehead with sweat as I lay in my bed, and desperately tried to get through the contractions that came with childbirth.

"We sent word to him, he'll be on his way back now. But honey, are you sure that you want him here? It's not exactly traditional and proper for the daddy to be in the room when such a gruesome miracle is happening." Mom scoffed and shook her head as she held my hand.

"I need to have him here, mama. I'm bringing our child into the world, he needs to be here to witness that-AHHHHH!" I screamed out as another contraction hit. Suddenly, our door burst open, making my eyes widen as Arvin ran in. My husband panted heavily as he looked at me, and his eyes widened too.

"Oh my god, baby, I was afraid that I was going to miss it." He gulped as he rushed to my side and took my hand tightly into his.

"Trust me, Arv, all you missed was a lot of screaming." Mom teased as she rolled her eyes.

"I'm used to that, though, aren't I, baby?" Arvin smirked, his voice quiet as he mumbled the statement into my ear.

"Arvin, damn you, that's EXACTLY what GOT us here!" I yelled.

"Okay, okay, I'm sorry, I'll be quiet." He chuckled, his spare hand combing through my hair as the doctor rolled my skirt up to my knees.

"Doctor, please tell me that you see something, there's no way that I'm in this much pain without any movement." I choked and shook my head.

"It's your lucky day, Y/N, because I see your baby's head." He nodded. My eyes widened, as did Arvin's as we looked at each other.

"This is it, darlin'. This is it, our baby is about to be born. You can do this, I know that you can." He nodded.

"Only with you by my side, promise that you won't leave." I cried.

"I'm not goin' anywhere, baby. I'm going to be here the moment that our little one is born." He promised. I choked and nodded before looking down and taking a deep breath.

"Okay, Y/N, let's do this. On three, push. One...two...three." I squeezed my eyes shut, a scream leaving my lips as I pushed as hard as I could. I gripped Arvin's hand with all of my might, my husband letting me with no complaints as he continued to stay by me.

"You're doing so well, doll, I'm so proud of you." Arvin scoffed and shook his head as I stopped pushing, my eyes fluttering in exhaustion as I sighed out.

"You're nearly there, Y/N. One more push should do it. One...two...three." I pushed again, my teeth gritting together as I put all of the power that I could muster into bringing our baby into the world. And then just like that...we heard crying. My eyes shot open, a choke leaving my lips and my entire body relaxing as I felt them. I looked up, my eyes widening as the doctor held our baby daughter up for us to see.

"Oh, darlin', she's beautiful." Arvin choked and shook his head, my husband's gorgeous chocolate eyes going glassy as we both looked at our daughter.

"Congratulations, you two. A beautiful, healthy baby girl." The doctor smiled as he wrapped a blanket around our crying daughter. He gently placed her into my arms, my entire being already utterly in love with the small baby as she continued to cry and wail.

"Welcome to the world, little one. We're your mama and daddy, and we're going to take such good care of you." Arvin cooed, making me smile and bite my lip at him as he gently wiggled his finger in front of her face. Our daughter had only been here for a matter of seconds, but I could already tell that both Arvin and I were absolutely in love with her. Just like I had wanted to be.

My eyes fluttered open as I heard Dorothy crying again.

"Arv, it's your turn." I mumbled, my eyes fighting to stay open as I looked at the crib that sat only metres away from our bed.

"She needs feeding, that's the one thing that I can't do." He teased in his sleep. I sighed and opened my eyes again before sitting up. I stood from the bed, a yawn leaving my lips as I went over to the crib that held our week-old daughter in it.

"Hey, sh, sh, Dorothy, mama's here, mama's got you." I cooed to her as I leant down and gently picked her up. Her cries quietened but didn't diminish as I carried her to our bed and sat back down with her in my arms. I bit my lip and looked down at our beautiful baby girl as I undid the top of my nightgown before gently bringing her to my chest. She fell silent as she started to eat, making me sigh and let my eyes flutter shut as I sat with my back against our headboard. But I didn't stay that way for long. I felt Arvin's arm curl around my back, forcing me away from it slightly but only for my back to instead touch his chest as he curled his arms around me, and sat next to me.

"She suckling okay?" He mumbled quietly, his eyes also struggling to stay open as he pressed kisses to my naked neck and shoulder.

"Yeah, she latched straight on, must have been hungry. Though, I just wish that she'd sleep through the night, I'm so goddamn tired." I chuckled and shook my head.

"I told you, baby, we ought to try rubbin' some whiskey on her gums, that'll make her go down for the night." Arvin nodded, his fingers tracing gentle circles on my hips as we both watched our daughter nursing.

"Buy some on your way home from work today, and we'll try it." I replied, making him nod again as Dorothy let go of my nipple.

"I think that she's done. Your turn." I chuckled, making Arvin smile and nod as I gently handed her to him to burp.

"Hello, my little flower. Daddy's got you, you're so good for daddy." He cooed gently, making her coo and whimper as he lay her against his shoulder and started to softly tap her back. I did my nightgown back up before lying back down, Arvin also lying down with Dorothy on his chest. I bit my lip and looked at him.

"I love you, Arv, so much, and I love our little Dorothy too. You know that, right?" I spoke quietly. Arvin returned the gaze, his beautiful eyes flicking over my face as if to study me.

"Of course I know that, darlin'. I love you and little Dorothy too. You're my girls, and always will be." He smiled. I returned it and bit my lip, my eyes starting to droop again as I leant forward and rested my head on his shoulder. Arvin turned his head to rest his cheek against my hair, Dorothy's babbling also quietening down as she lay on her dad's chest, and all three of us started to fall asleep again.
