Espanol (Tom Holland)
Requested by abbymilne: Tom and Y/N can't have children, and so they adopt instead, but they adopt a child who can't speak English, so they learn the child's native language.
*Please note: 1. since some bits are in a different language, I have put translations in for the bits that I find necessary to translate. 2. Whilst I speak SOME spanish, I am NOT fluent, so any Spanish speakers, please don't come for me if I have vocab wrong or anything lol. Thank you and enjoy :)*
I sat in mine and Tom's living room, my eyes on the TV in an attempt to distract myself whilst my husband of five years finished his work for the day. I looked down as my phone started to vibrate, making my eyebrows furrow as it showed an unknown number. I picked it up and pressed the green button before holding it to my ear.
"Hello?" I picked up.
"Hello there, is this Mrs Holland?" The woman asked. My eyebrows furrowed.
"Speaking." I nodded to myself.
"Hi, Mrs Holland, it's Jessica, from the agency. I have good news." She spoke. My eyes widened, my heart immediately jumping in hope as I shot to my feet.
"Really?" I gulped.
"Really. I suggest that if he's nearby, you go and find Mr Holland." She replied. I giggled and nodded to myself, my heart already pounding as I rushed through to the study. I threw the door open, making Tom look up at me from his laptop. His eyebrows furrowed.
"Sweetheart, are you okay-."
"It's the agency, they say that they have good news." I cut him off. His eyes widened.
"Oh my god, come here, come here!" He exclaimed, making me nod as I rushed to him and sat down on his lap. Tom and I had been trying for a baby ever since we'd gotten married, which had led to a long five years of trying, and failing, to get pregnant. It had been a mystery why, until we'd received the devastating news that I couldn't have children. The doctors had told me that my womb wouldn't be able to protect a baby for long enough for it to grow, that that was how it was for some women, and that because of this, no fertilised eggs would ever make it past the twelve-week mark in my uterus. The news had of course absolutely crushed me and Tom, and had ended our dreams of becoming parents. That was until we started to think about the possibility of adoption. We'd applied to adopt a child two years ago, and this had been the first call that we'd had to suggest that they'd actually found a child that would be ours. A child would soon be ours.
"We're both here, Jessica, what do you have for us?" I gulped, Tom's arms curling around my waist and him resting his chin against my shoulder as I put my phone on speaker.
"One of the children's homes in Spain that we're partnered with has a little boy who they think would be perfect for you. He's called Nico, he's three years old, and he's the cutest little thing ever." Jessica chuckled over the phone. I bit my lip and looked at Tom, my husband's eyes just as full of excitement as I was sure that mine were as we looked at each other.
"He sounds perfect. He sounds absolutely perfect." Tom laughed and shook his head.
"Before you agree, guys, there is one...slight...catch." She spoke. My eyebrows furrowed, as did Tom's as we both continued listening intently to the call.
"Okay...and that is?" Tom scoffed. There was a pause.
"He doesn't speak a word of English...and I know that you don't speak a word of Spanish." Jessica returned the scoff. My eyes widened and I looked at Tom, his mouth falling open as he returned the look.
"Oh...yeah, I can see how that might be seen as a catch." I sighed.
"Yeah, and we completely understand if that's too much for you to take on. We can find another family for him if you can't take him-."
"No!" Both Tom and I cut her off before we looked at each other. I sighed and bit my lip, making Tom return it as he reached forward and gently put his hand over my phone's speaker so that Jessica wouldn't hear us. He gave me a small smile and shook his head.
"We have to do this, my love. We can learn Spanish, we can take lessons, but we have to do this. It feels right." He mumbled quietly as his beautiful chocolate eyes flicked over my face. I nodded and bit my lip, tears pricking my eyes at the idea that this was finally it. We were having a child.
"I agree. We can do this." I nodded. He returned it and smiled, making me laugh as Tom took his phone away from my phone so that we could be heard again.
"We'll take him, Jessica. The catch isn't a deal breaker to us at all, we'd absolutely love to adopt Nico." Tom spoke.
"Amazing, brilliant! I'll send over the paperwork, and Nico will be flown over to London once everything is processed. He's going to be so excited!" She exclaimed.
"Trust me, we're just as excited." I smiled.
"Glad to hear it. Get the paperwork done as soon as possible, and we'll get you your son. Speak soon, Mr and Mrs Holland." She replied.
"Thanks a lot, Jessica, talk later." Tom nodded before I hung up. I scoffed and stood from Tom's lap, my husband also standing up as we just stared at each other. Stared at each other in utter shock that we were finally about to be parents.
"We're going to have a child!" He laughed and threw his arms up.
"We'll be parents!" I squealed, both of us laughing and cheering as Tom picked me up. We hugged tightly, my husband spinning me around and pressing kisses to my cheek and neck as we celebrated the fact that soon enough, we'd have a beautiful little boy.
Tom and I stood at the airport, our hands joined and our hearts beating so fast as we waited for Nico's flight to land. I gulped and looked at Tom.
"Are we sure that we're ready for this? Not only to be parents, but also to be parents to a child who doesn't speak English when we barely speak Spanish?" I asked quietly. Tom returned my glance, his eyebrows furrowed as his gorgeous eyes flicked over my face.
"Of course we're ready, darling. We've waited for five years. Sure, it's not the pregnancy and the newborn that we always wanted, but it's as close as we're ever going to get. We're going to be parents to a perfect little boy, and it's all going to be amazing." He smiled and shook his head. I sighed and bit my lip, the feeling of Tom squeezing my hand in reassurance calming me down as we looked into each other's eyes.
"You're right. Fuck, you're right. Just because this isn't exactly how we wanted it, doesn't mean it's any less perfect. We're now parents. And I can't wait." I smiled. He returned it and leant in, his thin lips gently pressing to mine before he pulled away. As if on cue, the plane doors opened, making me gulp as all of the passengers started to flood out. And then, he appeared. My breath hitched in my throat, tears pricking my eyes as the cutest little boy that I'd ever seen toddled out, his hand being held by a woman as they walked out.
"Oh my god, Tommy, that's him, it must be." I choked and shook my head.
"That's him." Tom nodded and smiled, making me return it as I got onto my knees and opened my eyes. Nico got the hint, the most beautiful smile ever spreading onto his face as he saw us.
"Madre! Padre!" He yelled, my heart instantly melting with how perfect he was as he let go of the woman's hand and ran straight to us. He ran into my arms within seconds, tears leaving my eyes relentlessly as I closed my arms around him and hugged him with all of my being. I choked and shook my head, my eyes squeezing shut as my hand raised to stroke his dark brown curls.
"Hola, Nico. It's so good to meet you." I smiled, Tom also kneeling down beside us to join in on the hug as we met Nico for the first time, and instantly fell in love with him.
Tom and I stood in the kitchen, both of us looking in confusion at Nico as he sat at the kitchen table. He beamed up at us, both my husband and I looking at him and trying to figure out how the fuck we told him what the food on his plate was. I sighed and bit my lip, my mind almost too focused on how cute he was to remember the language barrier as Tom helplessly flicked through the 'from English to Spanish dictionary' in search of what we needed.
"Have you found it yet, Tommy? I need to tell him what he's eating." I mumbled, though kept the smile on my face so that I continued reassuring Nico.
"If I'd found it, I would have said-love, why am I doing this? I'm the dyslexic one." Tom scoffed.
"Actually, good point, switch roles." I spoke as I turned to face him, making him nod as he handed me the dictionary.
"Hola, Nico." Tom smiled as he sat down next to Nico at the table.
"Padre! Ya te quiero mucho a ti y a mamá!" He exclaimed. Tom smiled and nodded before looking at me.
"What did he just say, sweetheart?" He asked.
"Fuck-I don't know, but I have found how to tell him what he's eating." I nodded, my eyes still on the dictionary as I sat down next to Tom. I smiled and looked up at Nico before pointing to his food.
"Um, okay...una hamburguesa...con q-queso con...ah, papas fritas." I nodded. His eyes lit up, making me and Tom chuckle and look at each other at how cute our son was.
"¡Me encanta esa comida! ¡Muchas gracias!" He exclaimed before picking up the burger and starting to eat it. I breathed a sigh of relief as I looked at Tom, my husband giving me a warm smile as he put his hand over mine.
I stood at the doorway to Nico's room, my heart so full of love as I watched my husband carry our sleepy son into the room.
"There we go, my love, nice and easy." Tom cooed, Nico's eyes fluttering with tiredness and Tom gently supporting his son's head as he lay him down into his bed.
"We love you, Nico. Goodnight." Tom whispered, Nico already asleep as Tom leant down and gently kissed his head before standing back up. I gave Tom a smile, making him return it as he crept out of Nico's room and gently shut the door behind him. I puffed out as my husband took my waist, both of us heading through to the kitchen to start studying Spanish.
"We really need to learn how to speak to him. We can't use a dictionary for his whole life." Tom scoffed and shook his head as we sat down at the kitchen table.
"That's why we're doing this, Tommy." I nodded, my eyes glancing over the pages and pages of Spanish vocabulary that we were starting with in order to talk to Nico.
"If we want to be able to talk to him by morning, we better make a start." Tom sighed, making me nod as we started to pick up pieces of paper, and learn the words on them.
Pain and ache swept through my neck, a groan of discomfort leaving my lips as my body slowly came out of sleep. My eyes fluttered open, my eyebrows furrowed as I could see that my cheek was pressed to the surface of the kitchen table.
"What the fuck?" I mumbled as I slowly and agonisingly sat up, and pulled my face away from the wooden surface.
"What...why are we at the kitchen table?" I looked to my side, a sigh leaving my lips as Tom also started to come to.
"I think that we fell asleep at the table learning Spanish for Nico. How much do you think that you learned?" I asked. Tom puffed out and shook his head as he looked over the sea of crumbled and drool-covered paper that still littered the table.
"Absolutely no idea, darling. I'll have to see when Nico is up." He sighed.
"¡Buenos días!" Both of us looked to the door of the kitchen, a smile curling onto my lips as Nico stood at the doorway in his pyjamas.
"Buenos días, Nico!" I laughed, Tom also smiling as I opened my arms. Nico took the hint and walked towards me, my heart falling more in love with our son by the second as I gently picked him up and sat him on my lap.
"¿Qué es esto?" Nico asked as he looked over the paper. My eyes widened, my eyebrows furrowing as I actually recognised some of what he was saying.
"Tommy, um...I could be wrong, but I think that he's asking what the pages are." I nodded as I looked at him.
"Okay, I think that I have this one." He spoke, making me gulp and nod again as Tom shuffled forward and took Nico's hand into his own.
"Nosotros aprendemos, um... e-español para ti." Tom spoke. I nodded and looked at Nico, my mind once again recognising some of what Tom had said as I looked at our son. His beautiful eyes widened, a wide smile forming onto his lips as he looked between us.
"¿De verdad?" He squealed.
"Really. And we'll keep learning for as long as we have to." I smiled, making Nico giggle as I kissed his head.
~Two years later~
I stood in the school playground, my eyes on my husband and our son as Tom knelt in front of Nico and made sure that everything was in his bag.
"Tienes todo? ¿Lo comprobaste esta mañana?" ("Do you have everything? Did you check this morning?") Tom asked as he looked up at Nico.
"Sí, papá, lo comprobé. Tengo todo." ("Yes, dad, I checked. I have everything.") Nico returned with a nod.
"Okay, bud. As long as you're sure." Tom spoke as he stood up, making Nico smile up at him as Tom took his hand. Since we'd adopted Nico, two years ago now, life had been simply perfect. Nico was now five, and Tom and I had become fluent in Spanish before he had turned four so that we could communicate with him. To make sure that our Spanish stayed sharp and his English stayed sharp, we made sure to have conversations with him in both languages. Not that it mattered, either way, Nico had already made us extremely proud, and he was truly the light of our lives.
"Okay, parents! It's time to say goodbye to the children, for their first day of school! Yay!" The teacher smiled, making all of the kids laugh and squeal as they started to run towards the doors. But not Nico. Our son looked back at us for reassurance, making tears prick my eyes at how precious he was, as well as the fact that he was already starting school.
"Ve, hijo, estarás bien. Te amamos." ("Go, son, you'll be fine. We love you.")." I nodded, everything in me trying to hold myself together for Nico's sake as Tom curled his arm around my waist.
"Love you too! Bye, mama, bye, papa!" He smiled, making us both return it as he ran off. I choked and bit my lip, tears starting to leave my eyes as Tom looked at me.
"Aw, my love. He's ready for this, he'll be okay." He reassured.
"I know, Tommy. That's why I'm crying. I'm just so proud of him." I choked and shook my head.
"I know, darling. I am too." He smiled, making me return it through the tears as he leant in and gently kissed me.
