Amnesia. Again *part 2* (Tom Holland)
Requested by -NoraAdeline: Y/N gets amnesia, and Tom has to make her remember him.
I sat in the car, Tom in the driver's seat as he drove us along the unfamiliar road that apparently led to his house. I heard Tom sigh, making me gulp and bite my lip as I looked at him. Which, I had to admit, it hurt to do. Since we'd met, two weeks ago, Tom had been in a perpetual state of looking sad and ready to give up on life. Not that I could particularly blame him. After all, it was clear from the stolen glances that Tom was taking that we had been more than just friends before I had lost my memory, but I couldn't remember any of it. Which was why Tom was moving me in with him, with regular visits from both of our families. According to the doctors, I was, in theory, more likely to recover at least some memories if I met people that I'd known before, and also saw places that I'd been before. Hence why Tom was currently driving me to his house, where I'd re-meet his parents, brothers, and dog.
"You okay, Tommy?" I asked quietly. The boy's eyes wavered as he looked at me, his lips giving me a small but unconvincing smile as he put his hand on my knee.
"Yeah, darling, I just-." His eyes widened, his mouth forming into an 'O' shape as he realised where his hand was. Not that I minded at all. All I knew was that his hand felt so fucking natural where it was, so loving and kind, but not at all pressuring.
"Shit, Y/N, I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make you feel uncomfortable." Tom gulped, his eyes somewhat nervously glancing at me as he took his hand off of my knee, and put it back on the steering wheel.
"Tommy, it's okay, you didn't make me uncomfortable at all." I chuckled and shook my head. The boy gulped again and looked at me, a glint of disbelief in his eyes as they flicked between me and the road.
"It...it doesn't?" He asked hopefully. I bit my lip and shook my head, Tom's lips slightly curling into the first genuine smile that I'd seen in half a month as his hand found my knee again. I wasn't exactly sure why I felt so okay with him being so intimate, after all, my first memory of him was only two weeks old. But I couldn't explain it, I just felt safe with him. All I felt towards him was love and comfort, and so I was more than curious to see what I would remember, and what Tom and I would turn out to be. Before I could think any more about the situation, Tom pulled into the driveway of a house, making me assume that it was his house. I looked up at the grand structure, my eyebrows once again furrowing as I somewhat recognised the house, but only in what felt like a distant memory. Tom turned the car engine off, making me gulp as I looked at him. The boy obviously noticed my nerves, his eyes wavering as his hand gripped my knee that much tighter.
"I get that you're nervous, sweetheart. And I know that you don't remember them, but you get on like a house on fire with my family, especially with my mum. So, I promise you, that you're going to be fine." He reassured, his hand continuing to gently massage my knee as he looked into my eyes. I bit my lip and returned the gaze, my heart admittedly fluttering in my chest purely at the look that he was giving me.
"Okay. Yeah, Tommy. I'm ready whenever you are." I nodded, my mind trying to make me sound braver than I felt as I looked at him. Tom gave me a small smile and nodded, making me return it as he opened his door and climbed out of the car. I took deep breaths, anxiety filling me as my door opened, forcing me to climb out too. I couldn't even comprehend how nervous I was, my heart fucking suffocating me in my throat as I tried not to get overwhelmed by the situation. By the fact that I was meeting the entire family of someone who I was supposed to know, but couldn't remember. That wasn't nerve-wracking at all. I felt Tom's hand on the small of my back, though I didn't say anything because I knew that he'd feel guilty for touching me so intimately, when ultimately I didn't mind. Tom opened the door to the grand house, me happily being led in by him as my eyes widened.
"What the fuck?" I whispered as my gaze flicked over the start of the beautiful home that I had walked into.
"Y/N." I looked ahead as someone said my name, my heart once again jumping as a slightly red-headed woman walked towards me. She gulped and looked at Tom.
"Will she remember me?" She asked quietly. I looked at Tom, who was so close to me that his chest was against the back of my shoulder, the curly locked boy sighing and shaking his head at the woman as tears pricked his eyes. I gulped and looked back at the unknown woman, making her nod and give me an obviously forced smile as she walked forwards and took my hands into hers. I let her, once again something in my mind telling me that I could trust this woman as she held me.
"Y/N, hi...I'm Nikki. Do you remember me?" She asked softly. I gulped and looked at her. She looked like Tom as her eyes flicked up to him, leading me to the conclusion that she was probably his mum, or at least some kind of relative. Whatever she was, I had a feeling like I'd had with Tom that I was safe with her, and like she loved me. I just wished that I could put my finger on why I felt like that.
"I, um...I'm sorry, but I don't." I shook my head truthfully, though a twang of hurt hit my heart due to the fact that I felt like that answer should have been yes. The woman's eyes wavered, and her lips curled into a reluctant smile as she looked past me and at Tom.
"That's okay. I'm Nikki, I'm Tom's mum. How about I show you to yours and T-."
"Mum, she, um...she's not supposed to know." Tom cut her off as he took a step forward, the final part of his sentence in a hushed voice. But I still heard it. Nikki's eyes widened slightly at him and she nodded.
"Sorry, of course. Come on, sweetheart, I'll show you to your room." She smiled, making me gulp and return it hesitantly as she gently took my arm.
"Mum, just...just remember what the doctor said." Tom reminded from behind me again.
"I know, darling, I promise that I'll be gentle." Nikki replied as she gently led me to a closed door.
"It's okay. You can open it." I nodded. Tom looked at me, concern in his eyes as they flicked over my face.
"You sure, darling?" He triple-checked. I nodded again and bit my lip. After all, I'd never remember what I was supposed to without me being exposed to things like this. Tom sighed and opened the door, making me gulp as I looked in. Inside the cream room was a huge king-sized bed, the sheets decorated with gorgeous white and blue sheets as a mahogany dresser stood against the opposite wall to the bed. I gulped and took in my surroundings, hardly believing that this had once been mine. Not that I knew that for certain, of course, all I could do was guess.
"Am I alright to put my stuff down?" I checked as I looked between Tom and Nikki.
"Yeah, of course you are." Nikki smiled, making me return it as I looked at her. My eyebrows furrowed, something familiar about her eyes as I looked into them.
"Y/N? Are you okay?"
I paced the carpet of our bedroom, my heart in my throat as I held the pregnancy test in between my fingers. Whilst we wanted a baby eventually, now wasn't the time. We were supposed to get married, not that he'd proposed yet, we were supposed to buy our dream home that we'd fill with love and children. But we were both still young, whilst we were ready to settle down and commit to each other, ideally kids were still a couple of years away for us. And so I didn't know what we'd do if it was positive. I didn't know what I'd tell him.
"Honey?" I looked at the open bedroom door, Nikki standing there looking just as nervous as I surely did as she looked at me.
"Has it come up with a result yet?" She checked. I shook my head and bit my lip, my stomach flipping like it never had before as I nonchalantly tapped the plastic stick against the palm of my hand. I knew that some people would have questioned my choice to have Nikki here instead of him, but I was so close to her that she was like a second mum to me, and so I wanted her here if it was positive, or even if it wasn't. If it wasn't positive, I didn't want to put him through the stress of not knowing whether or not he'd accidentally gotten me pregnant.
"No, but...any second now." I mumbled as I sat down on the edge of our bed. Nikki sighed and joined me, the kind woman's arm wrapping around me immediately as we both looked down at the small window that had yet to show us a result.
"Would you want it to be positive, sweetheart? I know that you two haven't been planning anything, but what would you want to do if it's positive?" She asked softly. I puffed out and shook my head, tears pricking my eyes as I tried every technique in the book to not cry.
"I don't even know, I...all I know is that if he's okay with it too, I'd want to keep it if I am pregnant." I admitted as I looked at her. Nikki's eyes wavered, a small smile tugging on her lips as she nodded.
"That's lovely, darling. Really is." She spoke.
"Yeah, I mean, I love him, we know that we're it for each other and that we want children together. The only issue would be that we weren't planning to do this for another few years. But...yeah. If it's happened now, it's happened." I gulped, my heart completely unsure of what result I wanted to come up. After all, whilst now wasn't the perfect time, I would be pregnant with the love of my life's baby, something that I knew would happen in time. And so if I was pregnant, I had to admit that I would be over the moon. Even if I'd be scared shitless, we'd get through this together. I'd get through it with him. Nikki's eyes flicked down to the test, making me gulp harshly as her eyes wavered. Her lips parted, though I couldn't tell what result she was shocked at as she looked back up at me.
"Nikki, I can't, I can't fucking look." I choked and shook my head.
"It's okay, sweetheart, it's alright. Everything's alright." She reassured, making me gulp again as she cupped my face in an attempt to reassure me. This was it. I took a deep breath before looking down at the window. My eyes wavered, tears starting to leave them as soon as I saw the result. I nodded and bit my lip, my heart admittedly hurting at what I was seeing. At the thought of what could have been, and now wouldn't be.
"Wow...I...I'm...not." I whispered, my head shaking as my eyes kept flicking over the lack of a cross in the window. I couldn't explain it, but something in me was begging for it to change, for it to change to tell me that I was pregnant. But I knew that it wouldn't.
"I'm not pregnant." I choked, tears now relentlessly leaving my eyes as the sad reality hit me, as well as the realisation that I had wanted to be pregnant.
"It's okay, darling. It's okay." Nikki choked too, making my lips release a quiet sob as she gently pulled me into a hug, my head on her shoulder as she comforted me, and we cried together over the negative pregnancy test.
My eyes wavered, my lips parting and letting a choke go as I looked at Nikki.
"What is it, what do you remember?" Tom gulped as he looked at me in desperation and put his hand on my arm. I gulped and shook my head, my brain desperately trying to process what I had just remembered. That in this very room, I had been sitting with the woman that I had just met, discovering that I wasn't pregnant. With whose baby, I didn't know, and I couldn't just assume that it was Tom's.
"I, um...I had taken a pregnancy test, it..." I shook my head. Tom's eyes widened, his orbs wavering as his lips parted.
"You were pregnant?" He choked as he stared at me with such intensity that I was starting to doubt what I had even remembered.
"Tom-."
"Were you pregnant?" He cut his mum off, making her sigh as she looked back at me. I shook my head and bit my lip, the pain of that day resurfacing as I looked between them.
"No, it, it was negative. I wasn't pregnant." I shook my head again. Tom choked again, tears pricking the eyes that I was falling in love with as they flicked over my face.
"Fuck. Fuck." He mumbled quietly, his hands raising to his hair as he turned away from me.
"I'm sorry, have I done something wrong?" I gulped as I looked at Nikki.
"Not at all, sweetheart. Get yourself settled in, and we'll come and check on you in a bit, okay?" She gave me a small smile as she reassuringly put her hand on my arm.
"Yeah, okay. Thank you, both of you." I nodded as I looked between them, my heart hurting as Tom couldn't even look at me. Nikki gave me another smile as I headed into the bedroom, Nikki shutting the door behind me and leaving me to my devices as I put my bag onto the bed, and started to unpack.
Tom's P.O.V
Tom and Y/N sat in the car, Tom in the driver's seat as he drove the pair of them back home. Not that Y/N could remember that it was their home, but that was why Tom was doing this. He let out a heavy sigh, making Y/N turn to look at him. Tom couldn't return it, his heart hurting whenever he looked at her. He knew that that was harsh, and it wasn't at all her fault that he couldn't look at her. But it had already been half a month since Y/N had been in the accident and had subsequently developed amnesia, and every day with her was killing Tom inside. All he wanted to do was hold her, kiss her, call her all of the nicknames that she once loved, but that he wasn't allowed to call her right now in case it unintentionally coerced her. He'd admit that he'd been bending the rules slightly, his eyes occasionally stealing glances at the beautiful woman that was the love of his life, but he knew that he couldn't do any more. There was still no sign that Y/N remembered Tom or anyone else in their lives, and every day was now harder than the last. Tom had the sickening feeling that that would be the same until Y/N finally remembered him. And he couldn't wait for that day. Right now, he just had to hope that taking her back to their home to continue living with him like before would help her remember. In theory, it would, but Tom was already losing hope admittedly.
"You okay, Tommy?" She asked quietly. The boy's eyes wavered as he looked at her, his lips giving her a small but still forced smile as he put his hand on her knee.
"Yeah, darling, I just-." His eyes widened, his mouth forming into an 'O' shape as he realised where his hand was. Fuck, he thought, his heart jumping in his chest at how good his hand felt on her knee, but also over the fact that he knew that he wasn't allowed to do that. No matter how much he wanted to keep it there and move his thumb against it like he normally did.
"Shit, Y/N, I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make you feel uncomfortable." Tom gulped, his eyes nervously glancing at her, almost to gauge her reaction to the intimate touch as he took his hand off of her knee, and put it back on the steering wheel.
"Tommy, it's okay, you didn't make me uncomfortable at all." She chuckled and shook her head. The boy gulped again and looked at her, a tiny but still present glint of hope appearing in his heart at the fact that she had potentially liked the touch as they flicked between the beautiful girl and the road.
"It...it doesn't?" He asked hopefully. Y/N bit her lip and shook her head, Tom's lips slightly curling into the first genuine smile that he'd been able to produce in half a month as his hand found her knee again. Before the accident, such a mundane touch was routine for Tom to do to Y/N, and wasn't exactly special. But now, it meant everything to Tom, the extremely simple feeling of her skin against his making his heart flutter like sex normally would as he cherished the feeling. Tom snapped out of his own head as he pulled into the driveway of their house. Y/N looked up at the grand structure, her eyebrows once again furrowing as she obviously somewhat recognised the couple's home. Tom turned the car engine off, making her gulp as she looked at him. Tom could read on her face how nervous she was, his eyes wavering as his hand gripped her knee that much tighter in an attempt to reassure her. Because he knew that they were about to start the next part of this excruciating journey, but it was that much harder for Y/N given that as far as she was concerned, she had been taken to a strange house by a man who she just had to trust. As hard as it was for him, Tom couldn't even imagine how scared she was.
"I get that you're nervous, sweetheart. And I know that you don't remember them, but you get on like a house on fire with my family, especially with my mum. So, I promise you, that you're going to be fine." He reassured, his hand continuing to gently massage her knee as he looked into the eyes that he'd fallen in love with years ago now. Y/N bit her lip and returned the gaze.
"Okay. Yeah, Tommy. I'm ready whenever you are." She nodded as she looked at him. Tom gave her a small smile and nodded, making her return it as he opened his door and climbed out of the car. He walked around to her side and opened the door for her, Y/N climbing out a second later as Tom shut it again and locked the car. Tom placed his hand on the small of her back, the boy not being able to help himself as they walked together up the path and to the front door. Tom opened the door to their home, Y/N's eyes widening as he led her in.
"What the fuck?" She whispered as her gaze flicked over the foyer of the house.
"Y/N." The pair of them looked ahead as Tom's mum said her name, his mum nervously walking towards them as she looked at Y/N. She gulped and looked at Tom.
"Will she remember me?" She asked quietly. Y/N looked at the boy who was so close to her that his chest was against the back of her shoulder, making Tom sigh and shake his head at his mum as tears pricked his eyes. Y/N gulped and looked back at his mum, making her nod and give her an obviously forced smile as she walked forwards and took her hands into her own.
"Y/N, hi...I'm Nikki. Do you remember me?" She asked softly. Y/N gulped and looked at her, Tom's heart jumping slightly at the small hope that she'd recognise his mum, and then by extension, remember him too. Tom's mum looked slightly at him, making his eyes waver and his heart plummet again as it became obvious that nothing was coming back to his girlfriend.
"I, um...I'm sorry, but I don't." She shook her head. His mum's eyes wavered, and her lips curled into a reluctant smile as she looked past Y/N and at Tom. He gulped and shook his head, making her sigh as the pair shared a sorrowful look.
"That's okay. I'm Nikki, I'm Tom's mum. How about I show you to yours and T-." Tom's eyes widened slightly.
"Mum, she, um...she's not supposed to know." Tom cut her off as he took a step forward, the final part of his sentence in a hushed voice. After all, if he wasn't allowed to tell Y/N that she was his girlfriend, she sure as hell couldn't be told that the pair shared a bedroom together, and had done for the last couple of years. His mum's eyes widened slightly at him and she nodded.
"Sorry, of course. Come on, sweetheart, I'll show you to your room." She smiled, making Y/N gulp and return it hesitantly as she gently took the girl's arm.
"Mum, just...just remember what the doctor said." Tom reminded from behind Y/N again.
"I know, darling, I promise that I'll be gentle." Nikki replied as she gently led her to their closed bedroom door, Tom closely following behind.
"It's okay. You can open it." Y/N nodded. Tom looked at her, concern in his eyes as they flicked over her face. After all, whilst he was desperate for her to remember him and their life together, he also didn't want her to get overwhelmed, and make the amnesia even worse.
"You sure, darling?" He triple-checked. She nodded again and bit her lip, making Tom sigh and open the door. Y/N gulped as she looked in. Tom and his mum watched the girl carefully, his eyes glued to her to try and gauge what she was thinking, or remembering, as she took in her surroundings.
"Am I alright to put my stuff down?" She checked as she looked between Tom and his mum.
"Yeah, of course you are." Nikki smiled, making her return it as she looked at her. Her eyebrows furrowed, Tom's face developing the same expression as to why she was starting to look confused as she looked into his mum's eyes.
"Y/N? Are you okay?" His mum asked, making Tom gulp as just like that, she seemed to be a world away.
"Darling?" Tom prompted, slight hope entering his heart again as suddenly, her eyes wavered. Her beautiful lips parted and let a choke go as she looked at Nikki.
"What is it, what do you remember?" Tom gulped as he looked at her in desperation and put his hand on her arm. She gulped and shook her head, Tom refusing to tear his eyes away from her as he could tell that she had remembered something. The question was just what she'd remembered, how far it had gone. He was just praying to anything right now that she had remembered him.
"I, um...I had taken a pregnancy test, it..." Y/N shook her head. Tom's eyes widened, his orbs wavering as his lips parted, and he felt his heart skip a beat.
"You were pregnant?" He choked as he stared at her intensely. This was the first that he'd heard about Y/N even taking a pregnancy test, let alone one that, as far as Tom was concerned, had been positive. That was the only thing that would make this worse, if Y/N had been pregnant and had lost the baby as a result of the accident. Because for all he knew, this had been recent, what she was remembering was recent.
"Tom-."
"Were you pregnant?" He cut his mum off, making her sigh as she looked back at Y/N. She shook her head and bit her lip, Tom refusing to look away from her as he needed the answer. He needed to know if the love of his life had been pregnant with his baby. Because a pregnancy definitely hadn't been identified during Y/N's stay at the hospital, and so if she had been pregnant, she wasn't anymore. And that would kill Tom.
"No, it, it was negative. I wasn't pregnant." Y/N shook her head again. Tom choked again, tears pricking his eyes as they flicked over her face.
"Fuck. Fuck." He mumbled quietly, his hands raising to his hair as he turned away from her. Just like that, Tom was back to not being able to look at her, his heart fucking hurting at the situation. Not only the fact that Y/N had taken a pregnancy test without telling him, but also that it had been negative, she had never been pregnant at all. But the boy had to admit that his heart was broken by that. It would have been another hurdle to overcome, and the pregnancy would have been an accident, but that didn't mean that Tom was any less sad about the fact that she wasn't pregnant, they weren't going to have a baby by this time next year. And that crushed Tom, the boy knowing that Y/N would have been equally crushed when she'd seen the negative test.
"I'm sorry, have I done something wrong?" He heard Y/N say, making his eyes waver as tears started to leave them.
"Not at all, sweetheart. Get yourself settled in, and we'll come and check on you in a bit, okay?" Tom continued to just listen, even his peripheral vision not on Y/N as he couldn't face her right now. He knew that it wasn't her fault, but he couldn't do it.
"Yeah, okay. Thank you, both of you." Y/N spoke again, making Tom choke as a few seconds later, he heard the door shut behind him.
"Oh my god." He choked again as he immediately headed away from the door and into the kitchen.
"Tom, listen to me." His mum spoke as she followed him, though the boy could barely keep himself together as he ran his hands over his face.
"Mum, what happened?! When did that happen, when did she think that she was pregnant?!" He cried, the tears now relentlessly leaving his eyes as he stared pleadingly at her.
"Just before the accident, a few days, maybe. I'm sorry that I didn't tell you, but she didn't want you to know, she knew that you'd be just as crushed as she was that she wasn't pregnant. She didn't tell you to protect you, and that's why I didn't, either." She tried to convince him. Tom sobbed and shook his head, his hands resting on his curls again as he tried to process everything. The fact that the love of his life didn't remember who he was, and now that she had had a pregnancy scare a matter of weeks ago and not only hadn't told him, but had been just as upset as he was when she found out that it was just a scare. Tom couldn't even celebrate the fact that Y/N had remembered something, that she had had a breakthrough, because he felt so crushed by what she had remembered.
"Darling, what's important is that she remembered something. I know that what she remembered isn't ideal, but she had a memory. It's also good what she remembered, it means she remembers being with you." His mum nodded.
"No, mum, I don't think she does. All she remembers is taking a pregnancy test, she didn't mention me, she didn't mention if she thought that she was pregnant with my baby. She still...she still doesn't remember me, mum." He shook his head, a choke in his voice as the tears continued to roll down his face with no sign of stopping. His mum sighed and gave him a small smile, tears pricking her eyes too as she closed the gap between them and wrapped her arms around him. Tom returned the hug, his cheek resting against his mum's hair as he let her just soothe him, and try to ironically forget about the whole situation, and the fact that the love of his life remembered that she'd had a pregnancy scare, but couldn't remember that it would have been his. Tom just needed her to remember, he needed the love of his life, his future fiance and wife, the future mother of his children, to remember him. That was all that he needed. He just feared that it would still be a long time before they reached that point yet. And that was killing Tom more by the day.
