Sign language (Tom Holland)

Requested by fan_of_marvel22: Y/N's little sister is deaf. One day, they're out together, when her sister runs into Tom accidentally. Tom apologises even though it wasn't his fault, and when Y/N's sister doesn't reply, Tom gets confused and asks Y/N why she isn't replying. She explains that her sister is deaf and so Tom starts signing to her. This makes her sister very happy since they don't know many people who can sign, which ends in them inviting Tom out to lunch with them, where they sign and chat for the whole meal.

"Mum, where are my shoes?!" I yelled as I stood in my room, my hands shoving my stuff into my bag ready for taking Jessie out for lunch.

"The last place that I saw them was on your feet, so I don't know!" I heard her call back from downstairs. I rolled my eyes and shook my head as I grabbed my bag and headed out of my room. I got to Jessie's doorway, my younger sister sitting at her desk as I appeared. She looked up at me.

"You ready to go for lunch?" I signed with my hands.

"Yeah, I just need to find my shoes." She replied with a nod.

"Funny, I can't find mine either. Think that mum has hidden them as a conspiracy against us." I signed with a smile, making her laugh and shake her head as I stood up. I chuckled to myself as I turned and started to head downstairs. There was nothing special about my life, I hated to admit. I was your standard twenty-four-year-old girl who was stuck in a dead-end job and a dead-end life. How fucking sad was that to admit, huh. The only shock that I had ever had was when my parents had told me ten years ago, at age fourteen, that they were having another baby. I had been an only child before that, and so I was both shocked and slightly grossed out to find out that they'd been having enough sex still at their age to conceive another child. But I tried not to think about that. Like most teenagers who were suddenly getting a sibling, I had hated the idea. Well, I hated it until Jessie was born. The moment that I'd held her for the first time, I'd utterly fallen in love with her. The tiny baby had been lying in my arms, asleep and quietly cooing as she started her life. She had been perfect in every way, and I had loved her from the second that she was born. Now, because my mum had gotten pregnant quite a bit older than what the advised age was, her pregnancy had been very risky and so there had been one thing different about Jessie. And that was that she had been born deaf, and still was to this day. Her disability had been a major adjustment for our family, especially since hearing aids never worked for her and so sign language was the only way to communicate with her. But like the family that we were, we had taken it in our stride, had all become fluent in sign language and loved Jessie unconditionally with her deafness being part of her.

"Is Jessie ready?" Mum asked as I headed down the stairs, and she appeared at the door to the living room.

"Apart from her shoes, yeah. I told her that you have a conspiracy against us to hide our shoes." I teased. She chuckled and playfully rolled her eyes as Jessie appeared at the top of the stairs.

"Let's go." I nodded. She returned it and headed down towards me.

"Have fun, go somewhere nice, don't get something crap like McDonalds or something." Mum teased before looking at me.

"And you, don't spend too much on her. It makes your dad and I look really bad when you spoil your sister." She warned.

"I'm her older sister who has money, I'm meant to spoil her." I chuckled before looking at her. She looked at me with furrowed eyebrows as she questioned what we were saying.

"Don't worry about it. Let's go." I signed, making her nod again as we headed out of the door.

Jessie and I walked along the street, both of us talking in sign as we chatted about where she wanted to shop, and what she wanted to eat for lunch. I looked casually to one of the shop windows, though my gaze widened as a beautiful bag in the window caught my eye.

"Ooh." I mumbled to myself as I headed to it. I didn't notice that Jessie hadn't noticed that I'd stopped.

"Oh-fuck." I looked ahead, my eyes widening slightly as Jessie had bumped into the back of a random guy. The guy turned around, making my eyes widen further. My mouth fell open, my heart leaping in my chest as the guy who she'd happened to bump into...was Tom fucking Holland. I'd admit to having a massive crush on the famous actor and extremely attractive man, even when I should have been past that type of stuff, but I couldn't help it. He was a god among men, everything about the guy absolutely perfect. And, well, my deaf little sister had just bumped into him.

"Oh my god, I'm so sorry." I gulped as I rushed to them and gently put my hands on Jessie's shoulders to make her take a step back. His face softened as he saw me, his slightly bewildered expression disappearing into a small smile as his eyes flicked over my face.

"No, no, it wasn't her fault at all, that's what I get for stopping in the middle of the street to check my phone." He chuckled, making me return it and bite my lip as he crouched down in front of her so that he was slightly below her eye level.

"I'm really sorry, you okay?" He smiled kindly as he put his hand on her arm. She just looked at him, making his eyebrows furrow as he instead flicked his eyes past her to look up at me.

"Is, um, is she okay?" he chuckled awkwardly. My eyes widened slightly. Fucking hell, you're making yourself look like an idiot in front of the Tom Holland, I thought as I looked at him. I was so used to everyone in our lives knowing that Jessie was deaf that it didn't even occur to me to tell people that we'd just met, so of course Tom was confused when she hadn't responded.

"Fuck, sorry, I'm so used to people knowing. She's deaf, so you can only talk to her in sign language." I nodded. His eyebrows raised and he returned the nod as his mouth formed into an 'O' shape.

"Oh. Well, I can do that." He chuckled before looking back at her. My eyes widened.

"What?" I scoffed. He looked at me again and flashed me a smile, making me gulp as my heart exploded in my chest at the action.

"Hey, I'm Tom. I'm really sorry for making you bump into me there." He signed with his hands. Jessie's eyes widened, making me chuckle and bite my lip as the biggest smile possible spread onto her face.

"It's okay, it was my fault. It's so cool that you know sign language." She responded, her smile unwavering as they started to talk.

"Nonsense, wasn't your fault that I was stood in a stupid place. And of course, you've got to be able to talk to everyone, right?" He returned before looking back up at me.

"Again, I'm really sorry about all of this." He chuckled as he stood back up.

"Don't be, she's right that she should have been looking where she was going. But it's definitely made up for by the fact that you know sign language. It's very impressive." I chuckled and nodded.

"I have plenty of fans who are deaf, so it's a useful thing to know, you know?" He smiled, making me return it as we glanced at each other. I looked down at Jessie as I felt her tugging at my sleeve.

"Can we invite him to join us for lunch? Please?" She signed. My eyes widened at the suggestion, a nervous chuckle leaving my lips at the idea of Tom Holland joining a nobody and her little sister for lunch. It was the stuff that you read in fanfiction, something that would never happen in real life.

"No, Jessie, I don't think so, he's a busy man." I signed as I chuckled, Tom watching the whole interaction as his gaze flicked between us.

"Her name's Jessie, huh? And what's your name?" He asked as he looked at me. I gulped and returned the glance, something about the way that his eyes were on me making my heart do somersaults in my chest. And I didn't want that feeling to stop.

"I'm Y/N. We know who you are, it's amazing to meet you." I smiled and shook my head.

"It's amazing to meet you too, Y/N. That's a cute name, I like it. Am I right in saying that she's asking me to join you guys for lunch?" He chuckled, making me return it and bite my lip as I looked at him.

"Y-yeah, you are, but it's okay, you're a very busy man, I can explain that you don't have time." I reassured.

"No, it's alright, I'd love to join you guys." He smiled. My eyes widened, my heart jumping in my chest and all of the heat in my body violently rushing to my cheeks at his words. He had actually said...yes.

"S-sorry, you...you can join us for lunch?" I gulped.

"I don't see why not. I was only shopping here anyway, wasn't doing anything important. Think of it as a more material apology for letting your sister bump into me." He chuckled and bit his lip. I returned it breathlessly, my mind desperately trying to process the fact that Jessie accidentally bumping into Tom Holland had somehow landed us a lunch with him. This was insane.

"You tell her." I smiled. He returned it and nodded before looking at her.

"Let's go to lunch, yeah?" He signed. Her eyes widened and she gasped, making us laugh and me bite her lip at her reaction as she smiled and eagerly nodded.

"Lead the way." I chuckled, making Tom smile and nod as I took Jessie's hand and we started to walk along with Tom.

Tom, Jessie, and I sat in the cafe, all three of us laughing and signing as we ate lunch. We'd been eating with Tom for half an hour now, and he had been nothing short of a gentleman, and had been amazing with Jessie. He had insisted that he'd pay and so he'd let Jessie order whatever she wanted, and he'd been signing with her the whole time to make her feel included. I knew that I'd only known him in person for half an hour, but how amazing he was with my sister was only making me fall more for him by the second.

"Does it taste good?" Tom signed to Jessie as she ate the cake that he'd bought her.

"Amazing, thank you." She signed back. I smiled and bit my lip, Tom also smiling at her before he looked up at me.

"Is it rude for me to ask how she ended up deaf?" He asked.

"Not really, everyone's curious when they find out that she can't hear. It's nothing fancy. My mum was relatively old when she got pregnant, so Jessie didn't develop one-hundred-percent properly. Of course it could have been a lot worse, her being deaf isn't the end of the world, but my mum's age unfortunately cost Jessie her hearing. She was just born without it." I shrugged, Tom nodding along to my words as his gaze stayed glued to me.

"What about you? What's your story?" He smiled. I stopped eating and looked at him.

"Prepare to be very underwhelmed." I teased, making him chuckle at my response.

"I'm just a nobody twenty-four-year-old who's in a dead-end job as part of a dead-end-life. Jessie being born and meeting you today are the only exciting things that have ever happened to me." I sighed and shrugged.

"I don't know, Y/N, you seem pretty special to me. You're amazing with Jessie, you're kind, you're funny, not to mention really cute." He nodded. My eyes widened as he spoke, my heart leaping for the umpteenth time today as his words. Tom Holland had just called me cute. My celebrity crush...was calling me...cute.

"You flatter me too much, I'm really nothing special." I chuckled and shook my head as I desperately tried to ignore my cheeks feeling as hot as the surface of the sun.

"Well, you are from where I'm sitting. And, I don't know, I'd love to get to know you better. Maybe over a coffee or something." He suggested. I looked at him, my stomach doing violent flips in my body. It was mad enough having bumped into him of all people on a random street in London, it was a whole other thing that he'd taken us out for our lunch and paid for it, and NOW he was asking me out too. All of my dreams were coming true.

"Are you a-asking me out on a date, Tom?" I tried to smile to show that I was genuinely excited, but the nerves rushing through me made that hard.

"Yeah, I am. So, what do you say?" He smiled. My heart melted instantly at his expression, the chair that I was sitting on being the only thing still holding me up as he gave me one of his famous smiles.

"I'd love that, Tom. I'd really love that." I nodded.

"Brilliant. Well, I look forward to getting to know Jessie, and then getting to know you in a more...intimate way." He chuckled, making me return it and bite my lip at the boy's flirting. We went back to signing so that Jessie would understand and would feel included, the rest of the afternoon with Tom being amazing. And surely enough, being the first date of many together.
