Saying our goodbyes (Peter Parker)
Requested by zohar_yeshurun: Y/N and Peter are Avengers who are dating. In the war to stop Thanos, Y/N is the one to snap her fingers. Before she dies, she tells Peter that she loves him for the first time, as part of her goodbye to him.
I stood in the hallway of the Avengers' compound, my arms crossed over my chest and my mind wandering as I stared out onto the driveway of the impressive building. I looked to my side as Tony wondered towards me, my mentor giving me a small smile as he joined me in looking out.
"The gauntlet is finished. Bruce is about to snap his fingers. Figured that you'd want to be there for it." He nodded. I didn't acknowledge his words as tears pricked my eyes, my teeth chewing on my lip in a desperate attempt to not let any tears slip.
"What-." I stopped myself from talking, my head shaking as I looked at Tony.
"What happens if this doesn't work? If Peter and the other four billion people don't come back?" I choked. Tony sighed and gave me a small smile as he put his hand on my shoulder.
"It will work, kid. It worked for Thanos, and so it'll work for us. You'll get your Peter back, I promise you." He nodded. I gulped and returned it as I let him start to walk me back towards the room. Five years ago, the most catastrophic incident in human history had occurred. Five years ago, The Blip happened. Four billion people had just been wiped from existence, including my boyfriend of six months at the time, Peter. We had met on the team when we had both become Avengers and had started dating not long before he was turned to dust, my single biggest regret in these last five years being that I hadn't told him that I loved him before he was wiped out. And so, what we were about to do meant a lot to me. I had to see him again, I had to tell him that I loved him. I just needed to have him back. And today would hopefully be the day that that finally happened. Tony and I walked into the room, all of the other Avengers standing around and looking at Bruce, who was standing in the middle of the circle in his Hulk form.
"So...what, am I just undoing the last five years?" Bruce gulped.
"No, don't undo the last five years, that'll seriously fuck up all of the quantum realms. We leave the last five years untouched. All you're doing is bringing everyone back to here, to now, to today. You got it?" Tony checked.
"Yeah, I think so." Bruce nodded as he started to move his hand towards the makeshift gauntlet that Tony had made.
"Hold up, surely all of us need some kind of protection, right? I mean, the force of Thanos snapping his fingers last time was enough to wipe out a city." I scoffed. Everyone looked around at each other.
"The human child has a point." Thor nodded.
"Yeah, she does. Alright, everyone, suits on, guard up, protect yourselves as much as you can." Tony nodded. Everyone returned it, Tony stepping into his suit and then forming an energy shield in front of me as Rhodey and Scott also had their masks form over their faces.
"Great, no protection for me then, I guess." Bruce scoffed.
"Stop being a baby, Banner, if anyone can survive this, it's you." Steve returned the scoff.
"Well, here goes nothing, I guess." He nodded before starting to slip his hand into the gauntlet. It started to close around his hand, making my eyes widen as it ignited. Bruce cried out, his spare hand gripping his wrist as burns shot up the side of his face and neck.
"Is that supposed to happen?" I gulped as the huge man collapsed to his knees.
"I think so-you okay, Brucey?" Tony shouted over to him.
"Y-yeah, I'm okay, I've got this." He panted, the man standing back up on unsteady feet as we all stared at him. My eyes wavered, my heart almost beating out of my chest at the thought that in mere minutes, I would have my Peter back. I would see him again, I'd be able to run my fingers through his hair, look into his eyes, be held in his arms again. I wanted it all. I needed it all. And I was finally going to get it back.
"On the right! Not your right, MY right!" I yelled into comms as I flew over the battlefield using my energy.
"Does anyone have eyes on the gauntlet?! We need to keep it away from Thanos!" Steve shouted back.
"Y/N!" I looked down, my eyes widening as I saw Gamora below with the gauntlet in her arms as she also tried to fight off several members of Thanos' army.
"Catch!" She yelled as she threw it up. I caught it before igniting my energy again, my body continuing to soar above the unfolding carnage as I tried to get it away from Thanos. I looked ahead, my eyes widening as a giant weaponised claw was thrown towards me.
"Oh, shit-." It hit me, making me cry out as I started to plummet back towards the ground.
"I need help! Help!" I screamed into comms.
"I've got you, babe!" I screamed again as I was caught, Peter's arm solidly hooking around my waist as I held onto his neck for dear life. He webbed us away until our feet touched the ground, making my eyes flutter open. The first thing that they landed upon was Peter's stunning face, making my heart jump in my chest.
"Peter, oh my god, is that really you?" I choked as I took his face into my hands.
"It's really me, baby. Has it really been five years?" He scoffed. I nodded and bit my lip as I pulled him into my arms, his arms wrapping around my waist as I tightly held onto his neck.
"Yes, it has been. Five years without you, it was far too fucking long." I cried into his shoulder.
"Well, I'm back now, angel. I'm back, and I'm not going anywhere." He promised as his hands moved soothingly up and down my back.
"You will be if we don't stop Thanos from snapping his fingers again, save the reunion until later!" Tony suddenly yelled into comms.
"Right, sorry." Peter chuckled, making me smile and bite my lip at him as we pulled apart.
I ran across the battlefield, the gauntlet tucked under my arm as I tried to get it away from Thanos. I cried out as out of nowhere, the purple alien rammed into my side and sent me flying. The gauntlet tumbled out of my grip as I landed harshly, groans of pain leaving my lips as I rolled onto my front.
"Fuck." I choked as I pushed myself up on unsteady arms, my gaze glued to Thanos as he picked up the gauntlet.
"I find it sad how hard you humans tried to reset your own destinies. When will you learn that I did this for the greater good, and quit trying to change what was meant to be?" He chuckled and shook his head.
"What, you murdered billions of people for the greater good?" I spat.
"I didn't murder anyone. I got rid of them in a painless, kind way. I showed them mercy. More than I'm going to show you." He nodded as he slipped the gauntlet onto his hand. He threw his head back, groans of pain leaving his lips as his body absorbed all of the energy. He smirked and looked back down at me.
"You ready to lose your boyfriend again? Because that's what's about to happen." He nodded. I yelled out as I raised my hands, my energy shooting from them as I did. Immediately, though, Thanos fought back, his own stream of light emerging from the gauntlet as we fought. I gritted my teeth, all of my power going into making him weaker as I dug my heels into the dirt.
"Guys, I have him distracted! If someone can get him restrained, we could be in the clear!" I yelled into comms.
"On it!" As if on cue, I saw Peter webbing himself towards us from behind Thanos. My boyfriend fired a web at the gauntlet and pulled, making the alien groan as he was pulled off-guard. The energy stopped from the glove, making me gulp as I sprinted towards him. It was now or never. I grabbed the gauntlet and started to desperately pull, Steve jumping onto Thanos' back and Thor also restraining him as the three of them worked to keep him somewhat under control.
"Come on, come on." I groaned as I struggled to get the gauntlet off of his hand. Until I got an idea. My eyes wavered, my heart suddenly feeling numb as I realised. It didn't matter how many times we fought Thanos and made sure that he didn't get the gauntlet. Until someone from our side had snapped their fingers, he'd always be a threat. The issue was that none of us were strong enough to take on that energy and survive. I gulped harshly, a tear leaving my eye as I realised what I had to do.
"Tony, send me one of your gloves!" I yelled into comms, one of my hands continuing to pull the gauntlet off of Thanos' hand as I stuck the other one out.
"Why-."
"Just trust me." I responded, my heart pounding furiously in my chest at the idea of what I was about to do.
"Alright, kid. Incoming." He replied. I heard the faint whistling, making me close my eyes and take a deep breath. Once Tony's robotic glove clicked into place around my hand, there would be no going back. I had to do this. The glove soared towards me, the metal soon clicking around my limb as I looked at Thanos. I put my hand to the gauntlet, making the alien's eyes widen as the stones surely started to move from it to the metal hand.
"Y/N, no, what are you doing?" Peter gulped, the boy staring at me with wide eyes as the rest of the team noticed what I was doing.
"We have to do something, Pete. This is what we do." I nodded and tried not to show how utterly fucking terrified I was as the stones clicked into place on the glove. I screamed as the energy filled me, white-hot pain rushing through every part of me as I collapsed onto my knees. The whole team stared at me, Thanos also looking at me with wide eyes as I breathed deeply in an attempt to deal with the pain that was engulfing me.
"Y/N, for the love of god, please don't do this." Peter choked, tears starting to leave his eyes as he shook his head. I returned the look, my body becoming numb with not only the pain but also the realisation that I was about to die. But to save Peter, to save the other billions of people from having their lives taken again, I'd do it.
"I'm sorry." I nodded before snapping my fingers.
I lay on the ground, my eyes staring up at the ash-caked and dark sky as I just lay there. Quiet chokes left my lips, my entire body feeling like it was shutting down as my arm hung limply over my stomach. I knew that I was dying, that much was obvious, but I had never expected it to feel like this. I had never expected it to feel this...peaceful.
"Y/N, god no, please, please." I heard Peter's choking voice, making my eyes waver as a tear rolled down my cheek. Within seconds, he appeared in my line of vision, the boy's eyes red and puffy as he collapsed on his knees next to me.
"Please, you can't leave me now, come on, baby." He shook his head as he gently pulled me into his arms and onto his lap.
"I'm sorry." I whispered, my body not strong enough for me to be any louder as I looked up at the beautiful boy. He choked and shook his head, his hand gently cupping my cheek as he just held me.
"Please don't go. I know that you had to live without me, but I can't do the same, please, Y/N, don't go, please." He sobbed as he stared down at me. I gave him a small smile, what little energy I had left starting to leave my body as I felt myself start to fade away.
"I love you, Pete." I whispered. His eyes widened slightly.
"What?" He choked.
"That was the only regret that I had over the last five years. Not telling you before you went. I love you, Peter. I love you...so much." I choked, my voice barely audible as I became weaker by the second. He shook his head, tears continuing to pour from his eyes and fall onto my scratched-up skin as he pulled me further into his arms.
"I love you too, Y/N. I always have done. Which is why I need more time with you." He cried.
"I'm sorry that I can't give you that. You have to find someone else, Peter. I don't want you to spend your life mourning me and not finding anyone else." I choked and shook my head.
"I'll never find anyone else, Y/N. You were it for me. You're all that there'll ever be for me. And that's okay because you're going to be okay. You're going to make it. We're going to get married and have children, we're going to grow old watching them and our grandkids play in our garden. You're it for me, and you're going to make it." He sobbed. I gave him a small smile, my eyes starting to flutter as I raised my shaking hand to his face. He leant into my touch, tears cascading down both of our faces as he cupped my hand.
"I love you, Peter. Goodbye." I whispered, making him choke one last time as my eyes fluttered shut and my hand dropped from his face.
Peter's P.O.V
"Y/N, god no, please, please." Peter choked as he scrambled towards Y/N. The boy looked at her with red and puffy eyes as he collapsed on his knees next to her.
"Please, you can't leave me now, come on, baby." He shook his head as he gently pulled her broken body into his arms and onto his lap. He knew that the love of his life was dying, and that was killing him. He didn't want to say goodbye, but he knew that that was what he was doing.
"I'm sorry." Y/N whispered as she looked up at him. He choked and shook his head, his hand gently cupping her cheek as he just held her. His heart was breaking in his chest, his entire body numb at the fact that he couldn't do anything to save her, and he knew that. All he could do was hold her and be with her in her last moments of life.
"Please don't go. I know that you had to live without me, but I can't do the same, please, Y/N, don't go, please." He sobbed as he stared down at her. She gave him a small smile in return.
"I love you, Pete." She whispered. His eyes widened slightly.
"What?" He choked, his heart once again crumbling in his chest. He had waited for months after asking Y/N out to tell her that he loved her, and now it was being said for the first time when she was dying. This was wrong, it was all fucking wrong, but there was nothing that Peter could do to make it right.
"That was the only regret that I had over the last five years. Not telling you before you went. I love you, Peter. I love you...so much." She choked, her voice barely audible as she became weaker by the second. He shook his head, tears continuing to pour from his eyes and fall onto her scratched up and yet still perfect skin as he pulled her further into his arms.
"I love you too, Y/N. I always have done. Which is why I need more time with you." He cried.
"I'm sorry that I can't give you that. You have to find someone else, Peter. I don't want you to spend your life mourning me and not finding anyone else." She choked and shook her head.
She gave him a small smile, her eyes starting to flutter as she raised her shaking hand to his face. He leant into her touch, tears cascading down both of their faces as he cupped her hand.
"I love you, Peter. Goodbye." Y/N whispered, making him choke again as her eyes fluttered shut and her hand dropped from his face. Peter stared down at the body of his now dead girlfriend, his mouth hanging open and his entire being feeling completely fucking numb as he just held her. Tears silently left his eyes, no sob or cry leaving his lips as his mind tried to process that the love of his life had just died in his arms. He shook his head and looked down at her, his hand gently stroking her cheek as he looked at her now closed eyes.
"Please don't leave me, Y/N...you can't leave me, I love you too, you can't leave now, please." He whispered and shook his head. He choked again, everything feeling like it was a thousand miles away as he felt a hand on his shoulder.
"I'm so sorry, kid...I'm so sorry, she's gone." Tony choked quietly. Peter bit his lip and shook his head, his mind still not fully able to comprehend that sentence. But he knew that Tony was right. He knew that Y/N was gone and there was nothing that he could do about it. He silently stood up and picked Y/N's body up as he went, his arms holding her bridal style as her head and legs lulled over his arms.
"Don't take her away from me, Mr. Stark. Please." He choked quietly, making Tony sigh and give the boy a broken smile as he started to guide him towards the jetti that had landed to get them all to safety.
"I won't, Peter. You've got her, it's okay." His mentor spoke equally as quietly. Peter didn't say anything more, the whole team somberly filing into the aircraft to get to safety. Peter sat down on the benches with Y/N on his lap, his lips pressing to her hair as he held her one last time before he'd have to let her go. He knew that he'd have to let her go eventually and when that moment came, it would be the worst moment of his life.
