Road trip (Tom Holland)
Requested by Amya811: Y/N is scared of going in cars, but Tom doesn't know this, so he takes her on a road trip.
"Seriously, Tommy, what are we doing?" I chuckled, a squeal leaving my lips and my hands desperately holding my boyfriend's that were over my eyes as he carefully walked me forwards.
"I told you, darling, you'll know it when you see it." He returned the chuckle into my ear, making me smile and bite my lip. Today was my year-anniversary with my boyfriend, Tom, and I was so fucking excited for the day. I had no idea what we were doing, given that the sweet boy had insisted on planning the whole thing, but knowing my boyfriend, whatever he had planned would be amazing. The thing was that he had done everything in his power to keep me from finding out what his plans were, hence weeks of secrecy and hence why he was currently guiding me out of our house, very carefully, with his hands over my eyes.
"Okay, okay, I'm going to stop you now, we're there, I'm stopping you." Tom warned. I nodded and bit my lip as we both stopped walking, my heart pounding in excited anticipation of what he had planned for this special day.
"And...open." Tom's hands moved from my face, my eyes fluttering open as they did. But I had the opposite reaction to what I had expected to have. My eyes widened, my heart jumping in anxiety as my gaze landed on the car. The really fucking nice car, but it was still a car.
"W-what, um...w-what am I looking at?" I chuckled nervously as Tom curled his arms around my waist from behind.
"Your present! I rented this car, and I'm taking you on a road trip this weekend!" He announced excitedly. I gulped harshly, every inch of my body filling with pure anxiety and fear at the prospect.
"O-oh, Tommy! That's amazing, I love it!" I exclaimed as I lied through my teeth and turned around to hug him.
"I knew that you'd love it." He smiled and shook his head, making me return it hesitantly as he leant down and kissed me. I returned the kiss, my eyes fluttering shut and my hands raising to hold his face as we kissed. He broke it and leant down to hug me, making me sigh and gulp harshly as I returned the hug. Whilst I was telling Tom that I loved his gift, and whilst it genuinely was a thoughtful idea, I was actually fucking terrified of this road trip. And that was because of something that even after a year together, Tom still didn't know. That I hated being in cars. I had avoided at all costs going in cars with Tom for the last year, and had just about managed to control my crippling anxiety that took over when I got in on the few times when I hadn't been able to avoid it. Every time, I had explained it away with something else causing me anxiety, or just not feeling too great that day, and so my boyfriend had never sussed out that I had a very extreme and admittedly irrational fear of the vehicles. But it was a fear nonetheless, and one that it looked like I'd have to face head-on this weekend. After all, I could tell that Tom was genuinely so proud of himself for coming up with this for a present, and so I couldn't crush that by telling him that I was so fucking scared already. And so, I'd put myself through hell for the next two days. All to save my boyfriend from the same pain.
"I packed a bag for you, I've got three bags worth of your favourite drinks and snacks for the ride, and an amazing hotel booked for every night after travelling. This is going to be so amazing, sweetheart, I can't wait." Tom smiled and shook his head as he pulled away, but only enough to see my face as he kept his arms around me. I couldn't help but return his smile genuinely this time, my heart fluttering in the best way at seeing him so excited and proud of himself at this present. After all, it would be an amazing present if it weren't for my phobia, but I wouldn't let that ruin Tom's clear effort.
"Neither can I, Tommy. It sounds perfect. Thank you so much." I giggled and returned the head shake.
"Come on, love, let's get going. This is going to be so cool." He smiled as he opened the passenger side door for me. I winked at him as I got into the car, making him smirk and bite his lip as he shut the door. My smile dipped as he started to move around the car, my heart already speeding up in anxiety and deep breaths slipping through my lips in a desperate attempt to calm myself down before Tom got into the car. As if on cue, the driver's side door opened, making me look at it as Tom climbed in. I forced another smile onto my lips as he looked giddily at me, and we put our seatbelts on.
"You ready, my love?" He chuckled as he took my hand.
"As ready as I'll ever be." I nodded.
"Awesome, then let's get this show on the road." He smiled, making me return it hesitantly as he turned the engine on. I continued to take subtle breaths, my heart almost suffocating me already at the idea of spending the next two days in this fucking death-mobile as Tom started to drive.
Tom drove us along the country road, one hand on my thigh and the other on the steering wheel as he drove us through the beautiful setting. Well, it would have been beautiful if my anxiety hadn't been getting worse by the minute, for the whole hour that we'd already been travelling for. And I had another forty-seven hours of this, the idea of which only made me panic even fucking more.
"Sweetheart." I heard Tom's voice call out, his hand gently squeezing my thigh. I snapped back and looked at him as a result, my boyfriend's eyes flicking between me and the road as he raised his eyebrows at me.
"Are you okay? You've barely said a word since we left London." He chuckled nervously. I gulped harshly, the weight on my chest only becoming worse at the fact that Tom had noticed my silence.
"Y-yeah, I'm fine, I, just, um...I'm fine." I lied with a shake of my head.
"You don't sound fine for someone who was extremely excited for this road trip only an hour ago. I can tell that something is wrong, darling, please just talk to me. Tell me the truth." He sighed. I returned it and bit my lip, tears starting to prick my eyes as the anxiety got too much. My lungs started to feel heavy, virtually no air getting into them at all despite how much I tried as I felt worse by the second.
"Stop the car." I gulped. Tom looked at me again, his eyebrows furrowing in confusion.
"Wait, what-."
"Tommy, s-stop the car, please, stop the fucking car." I choked and shook my head, my heart pounding so harshly that it hurt as I started to hyperventilate, and tears started to leave my eyes. Tom's eyes widened at my state.
"Shit-okay, okay, you're alright, sweetheart, fuck." He gulped as he started to pull the car over. As soon as we were on the side of the road and he stopped the car, I threw the door open. I quickly undid my seatbelt before swivelling on my seat so that my legs were out of the car, but I was still sitting on the seat, my shaking hands raising to my head as I hyperventilated. I heard the other car door open, footsteps quickly crunching against the leaves on the side of the road before Tom appeared in front of me.
"Woah, hey, you're okay, darling, deep breaths, you're okay." He reassured, panic plastered onto my boyfriend's face as he crouched down in front of me and gently took my face into his hands.
"I'm not, I-I'm really fucking not, I can't breathe, f-fuck, fuck." I sobbed and shook my head, my entire body being filled with pins and needles as the anxiety took quick hold of my body.
"Yes you are, I'm right here, sweetheart, you're going to be okay, just breathe with me, breathe with me." He nodded. I gulped harshly and returned the nod, my glossy eyes reluctantly raising to meet Tom's as I looked at him.
"That's it, darling, you're doing so well, you're doing amazingly, that's it." He cooed, my boyfriend's thumbs gently stroking my cheeks to help me calm down as he took deep breaths and I copied him. I parted my shaking lips every few seconds, air filling my mouth and lungs in jagged and forced breaths before I gently exhaled again. With every breath, I felt myself gradually but surely calming down, my heartbeat still rapid but nowhere near as bad as it had been seconds ago as Tom continued to help soothe me in any way that he could.
"Good girl, you're doing so well, that's it, you're okay, I have you." He continued to gently reassure me. I gulped and nodded, my eyes fluttering from the emotional exhaustion of the panic attack before I looked down.
"I'm okay. I'm okay." I nodded, my voice in a whisper as I spoke. Tom gulped and returned the nod, his eyes still unsure as his gaze flicked over my face.
"What happened, darling? What caused you to have a panic attack? It's not like we were doing anything stressful." He scoffed and shook his head. I gulped harshly and bit my lip at him, more tears leaving my eyes as I knew that I couldn't keep this from Tom for any longer. Well, the secret had been good whilst it had lasted. But now, I had no choice but to tell him.
"I'm sorry." I choked and shook my head. His eyebrows furrowed.
"Sorry for what, sweetheart? You didn't do anything." He chuckled nervously.
"Exactly, I didn't do anything. I didn't say anything. I didn't tell you that I absolutely hate going in cars." I confessed. Tom's eyes widened.
"Sorry, what?" He scoffed. I nodded and gulped again.
"I'm terrified of going in cars, I have been for a few years now. I-I know that it's weird as fuck, and I know that it's completely irrational, which is why I never said anything, b-but, yeah. That's why I tried to avoid driving places, and why I always seemed off when I had no other choice but to drive somewhere with you. I have really serious anxiety when it comes to cars." I admitted. Tom sighed and looked at me, his eyes full of sympathy for me as they flicked over my face. "Love, why didn't you say anything? I'm so sorry, I never would have planned a road trip for our anniversary if I'd known." He shook his head.
"Don't blame yourself, Tommy, it's not your fault. I didn't tell you because it's embarrassing. It's embarrassing that as a grown woman, I get panic attacks from being in a fucking car." I sighed.
"It's not embarrassing, sweetheart, it's a very rational fear, one that's very real to you. I just wish that you'd told me, I never would have planned this if I'd have known. I would have organised a couple's spa day or something." He chuckled and shook his head, making me smile and bite my lip as I looked at him.
"For what it's worth, what you planned was amazing, and would have been perfect if I didn't have a phobia of cars. The weekend away sounded amazing, Tommy. It's just a shame that I ruined it." I sighed. Tom bit his lip and looked at me.
"You didn't ruin anything, sweetheart. Because I have an idea." He stated. My eyebrows furrowed at his words.
"What's your idea, Tommy?" I asked.
"I completely get it if you don't want to, but if you can handle one more hour in the car, we can drive back to London and get the train instead. That way, we still have the weekend away at the hotel, but we don't have to drive there." He smiled. My heart jumped in my chest, my lips also curling up at the ingenious and insanely adorable idea of Tom's. I'd never get over how much he'd do for me, how many mountains he'd move just to make me happy. But that was why I loved him, after all.
"For that, I can handle one more hour in the car. That really does sound perfect." I smiled and shook my head, my words nothing but genuine this time as I took Tom's face in my hands.
"Amazing." He chuckled as he leant up and kissed me. I returned the kiss, my eyes fluttering shut and my heart filling with pure love for the boy who I wanted to spend the rest of my life with as we just kissed. I'd never get over how much he'd do for me, and I hoped that I'd never have to.
"I love you, Tommy. So much." I whispered against his lips, making him smile as he broke the kiss and looked at me.
"I love you too, darling. Now, let's get back, and go get checked into our hotel." He nodded as he stood up. I smiled and returned it, the anxiety of the drive back significantly dulled by the weight being lifted off of my shoulders that came with Tom finally knowing my secret. And him being completely okay with it.
"Sounds like a plan." I chuckled, making him smile and bite his lip as I swivelled back to sit properly in the car whilst Tom climbed in, and we shut the doors. He started the engine, a slight anxiety creeping in again at the sound, but knowing that in just an hour, we'd be home safe and still on our way to our anniversary destination on a train instead made it all worth it. Being with Tom made it all worth it. And it always would.
