Music to my ears (Soulmate!AU, Peter Parker)

Requested by Meg_Weasley: Y/N is writing a song in a world where you hear what music your soulmate is listening to, and Peter always hears her song after school, but doesn't know who it is. At the school talent show, Y/N performs the song, making Peter realise that they're soulmates. Afterwards, they talk and end up getting together.

I sat in one of the school music rooms, my fingers pressing down on the piano keys to play it as I wrote the song that I'd been working on for a few weeks now. I closed my eyes and sunk into the music, the sounds flowing through my head more perfect than anything else as I played the instrument.

"Hey." Well, the sound more perfect than anything else...except for his voice. I opened my eyes as I heard Peter speak, a smile curling onto my lips as my best friend and obviously secret crush leant against the doorframe of the music room and smiled at me.

"You okay?" I chuckled and stopped playing as I turned on the stool to look at him.

"Yeah, just about to head home for my patrol, and figured that I'd check in. How was your day?" He asked.

"It was okay. Flash was being an asshole like always, but we both know that that's nothing new." I teased, making Peter laugh and nod as he looked down briefly before returning his gaze back up to me.

"No, it's not. I better go, but I'll text you when I'm home, yeah?" He spoke.

"Have a safe patrol, Pete." I nodded.

"I always do." He smiled, making me return it and bite my lip as he disappeared from the doorway. My smile dipped as he left, a sigh leaving my lips as I looked down. Of course I had been crushing on Peter for the longest time, my heart fully belonging to the boy by now. He still didn't know, though, but if I was completely honest, I had no idea how. Because, well, in this world, we had soulmates. Not in theory, we were each genuinely born to be with someone else, and it was easy enough to figure out who your soulmate was too, because whenever they listened to music, you would hear exactly what they were listening to in your own head. Now, I was a piano player. I got all of my feelings out, whether good or bad, through playing the piano, and writing songs about what I was feeling. I had done it since I had met Peter, though I had always been far too shy to actually play the boy any of my music. Because he'd never heard it, I had never been able to figure out if we were soulmates, because he didn't know what to listen out for. Either that, or...we weren't soulmates. The thought broke my heart more than I liked to admit. I sighed and shook my head, my mind trying to rid itself of the painful thoughts as I turned back to the piano and placed my fingers against the keys once more. I started to gently play, my eyes fluttering shut again as I let the music engulf me.

"Just say that I'm yours, that's all that I want to hear. Just say that I'm yours, just keep me near." I sang the lyrics that I'd come up with, my entire being becoming absorbed within seconds as I sang my latest creation.

Peter's P.O.V

Peter drove his foot into the thug's chest, the soft piano music running through his head as he fought the bank robbers. He was known for being sassy as Spider-Man, but when his soulmate was playing their music whilst he was on his patrol, he couldn't help but just listen to it when he was fighting whoever he was fighting. It was absolutely beautiful every time, lyrics having been added recently to the music and only making it more breathtaking to listen to.

"Karen, call the police, I'm done here." Peter nodded, the last thug groaning as he kicked him to the floor to leave all of them knocked out.

"Police are on their way. Good job as always, Peter." The AI returned into his ear.

"Why thank you." He chuckled and nodded before jogging out of the bank and firing a web at the roof to launch himself into the air. He landed on the roof with his hand in between his feet, the boy puffing out and pulling his mask off as he stood up straight.

"What a night, huh. The music is all that got me through." He chuckled as he sat down on the edge of the building so that his legs were dangling over the edge.

"Have you figured out who it is yet?" Karen asked.

"No. Don't get me wrong, the piano is beautiful, but it doesn't help that there are no lyrics-."

"Just say that I'm yours, that's all that I want to hear. Just say that I'm yours, just keep me near." Peter's eyes widened, his mouth falling open and his words stopping as suddenly, the sound of a voice singing entered his head.

"Oh my god, Karen. They're singing...they're actually fucking singing." He scoffed quietly and shook his head, tears pricking his eyes at their beautiful voice. Her beautiful voice. He couldn't pinpoint who it was from just her singing, but guessing from the pitch of the voice, his soulmate was definitely a girl. Peter wondered if it was still too much to ask that it was Y/N, even though he'd never heard her singing before. After all, he'd had a crush on his best friend for as long as he could remember, and had been overjoyed when she had taken up piano around the same time that his soulmate had started to listen to piano music. The issue with that though, was that Y/N was far from the only person even in their grade alone who played piano, and she'd never played any of her songs for him, so he couldn't tell if it was her playing, or someone else. The only way it felt like to find out was to get her to play for him, but he wasn't about to risk exposing his feelings to her if she turned out not to be his soulmate. Not to mention the absolute heartbreak that he'd go through himself if that turned out to be the case. No. For now, he'd just relax and listen to the girl's beautiful voice. As much as he'd hate it if Y/N wasn't his soulmate, from what he'd heard of his soulmate so far, she still had a gorgeous singing voice, and so that would hopefully be enough for Peter. He sighed and lay back against the roof, his eyes fluttering shut and his hands resting against his stomach as he just relaxed and let his mind be engulfed in the beautiful song.

Peter filed into the school auditorium along with the other hundreds of students who were in the flow. Today was the school talent show, and Peter knew that Y/N was doing something in it, he just didn't know what. But part of him hoped that she'd get up on the stage, and she'd play the song that had been in his head for the last few weeks. If she didn't, or if he didn't hear the music inside of his head as well, well...he'd cross that bridge of heartbreak when he got to it. He reached the third row of seats and gave MJ and Ned a small smile as he sat down next to them.

"Hey, guys. Has Y/N told either of you what she's doing? Because she's kept it all very hush hush to me." He scoffed.

"No, she hasn't. Not that I blame her, this is her first time performing in front of the school, and you know how precious her music is to her. Cut her some slack." MJ nodded.

"True." Peter sighed, his eyes flicking around the auditorium as they shut the doors at the back. His eyes widened slightly, and he gulped as the lights dimmed, his heart already starting to pump more harshly in anticipation of what would happen with Y/N. Un-enthusiastic and sparse claps filled the huge room as Mr Harrington walked onto the stage, the teacher smiling like always as he walked to the microphone.

"Hello, everyone! And welcome to the twenty-twenty-one Midtown High school talent show, even though you had to be here!" He beamed, making Peter chuckle and shake his head as MJ rolled her eyes.

"Today, we have a wide array of amazing acts for you, starting with Y/N Y/L/N! Everyone give it up for Y/N!" He announced. Everyone started clapping, Peter also cheering as he joined his hands together. The beautiful girl walked onto the stage, Peter's heart almost bursting out of his chest at how nervous he was for this as she walked to the piano and sat down at it. He saw her take a deep breath before she raised her hands and rested them against the keys. As soon as she started to play the instrument, Peter's eyes wavered. His mouth fell open, his heart pounding like it never had before as not only could he hear Y/N playing it onstage...but he could hear it just as clearly in his head too. He gulped harshly as tears pricked his eyes, feelings of pure happiness filling him as Y/N leant in to the microphone.

"Just say that I'm yours, that's all that I want to hear. Just say that I'm yours, just keep me near." Y/N sang, the sound nothing short of perfect as it filled Peter's ears. That had been the last thing that he'd needed to confirm that yes, Y/N was in fact his soulmate. She was his soulmate.

"In your arms is the only place that I wanna be, when you're not here, I can't be me." She continued, her eyes fluttering shut and her head gently shaking as she clearly got into the music. Peter bit his lip as a tear fell from his eye, his entire body feeling weightless. Every word, every sound, matched perfectly to what he had heard the other night, all of it only further confirming that he and Y/N had literally been made for each other.

"Dude, hey, you okay?" MJ whispered, making Peter look at her as she gently nudged his arm.

"I'm more than okay. We're soulmates, MJ. Y/N and I are soulmates." He smiled. Her eyes widened, making him nod as he looked back at the stage. He continued listening intently to Y/N's song, his heart still racing at the idea of finding her and talking to her about this after the show. But ultimately, he couldn't wait.

Y/N's P.O.V

I sat in the music room, my fingers playing the piano as I waited. For what, I didn't know exactly. Well, I did, but it was somewhat of a long shot. One of the reasons that I had decided to take part in the talent show was that if Peter was my soulmate, if he was also looking for me, it would make both of our lives so much easier now that he'd seen me play what hopefully had played in his head many a time. And given that I spent all of my time that I didn't spend with him in this music room, I was hoping that he'd know to find me here. IF he was my soulmate after all. I heard something by the door, making me look up. My heart jumped, my eyes wavering as Peter was now standing at the door.

"P-pete, hey. How was I?" I chuckled nervously, my heart racing in my chest as I stood from the piano stool.

"In the talent show? Amazing, y-you were amazing. But there was one thing that I felt let down by a little." He nodded as he walked into the room. My eyebrows furrowed, my stomach filling with anxiety at what he would say next. What if he was about to say that he hadn't heard the music in his head too? Or simply that he hadn't liked my song? It would break me if he said either of those things.

"O-oh? What let it down?" I gulped harshly. He gave me a small smile, making my eyes widen as he took my hands gently into his.

"The fact that it wasn't my first time hearing it. Because I've heard it in my head before." He admitted. My eyes widened, my lips parting and a choke leaving them as I looked at him. He smiled and nodded, tears also pricking his eyes as he beamed at me.

"Oh my god, Pete... we're soulmates." I choked and shook my head.

"Yeah, Y/N. Yeah we are." He smiled before leaning down and smashing our lips together. I returned it immediately, my eyes fluttering shut as I raised my hands to hold his face, and his hands held my waist. Fireworks went off in my head as soon as our lips touched, the feeling of Peter's hands moving over my curves simply perfect as I let myself get lost in the intimate moment. The intimate moment with the boy who I had been in love with for years, and apparently for good reason. We were soulmates. He broke the kiss and touched our foreheads, my eyes fluttering open to look into his gorgeous chocolate ones as his arms stayed around my waist and my hands stayed against his cheeks.

"That was an amazing first kiss." I whispered, making him smile and bite his lip as he nodded.

"The first of many more, I'm hoping. Will you be my girlfriend, Y/N?" He asked softly.

"Of course, Pete. I'd love to be your girlfriend." I nodded. He returned it and smiled, making me giggle as he leant down and pressed our lips together again. It was just as perfect as the first kiss, and I had no doubt that every other kiss afterwards would feel just as amazing. After all, we were soulmates, and from today onwards, always would be. And I couldn't fucking wait.
