Missed birthday (Tom Holland)

Requested by _ImASimp05_: Tom is away shooting a movie whilst Y/N is at home with their kids. It's their youngest child's birthday but Tom can't make it home to celebrate, and then even forgets to call. Their son starts questioning how much Tom loves him since he forgot to call, which leads to Y/N telling Tom off and yelling at him for not calling. Tom talks to their son and reassures him that he does love him, and promises that nothing like that will ever happen again.

"Sh, sh, remember that this is a surprise." I whispered, one of my hands underneath the 'Spider-Man' cake and the other guarding the five candles so that they wouldn't blow out as Charlotte, Esme and I crept towards James' bedroom.

"Are you ready, mummy?" Charlotte checked as she placed her hand on the doorknob.

"Let's do this." I smiled. My daughters returned it before opening the door.

"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear James, happy birthday to you." All of us sang quietly as we walked in, James' eyes opening and a massive smile curling onto his lips.

"Yay! Cake!" He squealed, making us laugh as he sat up in his bed and I sat down next to his legs.

"Blow out your candles, and remember to make a wish, sweetheart." I nodded as I carefully moved my hand away from the candles. James leant forward, his hazel curls that were identical to Tom's messy and unruly from sleeping as he filled his cheeks full of air. He blew on the candles, Charlotte, Esme, and I cheering as he got all of them in one puff.

"Do you like your cake, darling?" I chuckled as I showed him the design. His eyes widened, his mouth falling open as he saw it.

"It's daddy! Daddy's on my cake!" The five-year-old squealed excitedly, making me smile and shake my head at the fact that his first thought at seeing the 'Spider-Man' cake was that it was Tom.

"Yeah, he is! Speaking of daddy, he'll probably call soon, so let's get up and get some breakfast, yeah?" I suggested.

"Okay." He nodded.

"Good boy." I returned the nod as he climbed out of bed, and we all filed out of his room. I was the wife of ten years to world-renowned actor, Tom Holland, the love of my life being someone who I had been lucky enough to meet relatively early in life. We had met fifteen years ago at a party hosted by his best friend, Harrison and had started dating immediately, with Tom getting down on one knee and proposing to me a year after that. We had gotten married another year later, and had welcomed our first child, Charlotte, ten years ago. Since then, we'd had Esme and James too, James turning five today. Which was where the problem started. Given Tom's job as an actor, he was travelling almost all of the time, which meant that he missed important milestones like this one. He'd missed at least a couple of birthdays for each of the kids, and whilst he always tried his hardest to make it home for them, or at least send a present, most of the time it simply wasn't possible. Of course I would always be supportive of Tom's career, especially because it gave me and our children the best life that we could ask for, but it was also hard trying to explain to our young children that no, daddy hadn't forgotten about them, he just couldn't get away from work. That would always be hard. I sighed and shook my head as the kids sat at the breakfast bar, my mind trying to push the sadness of Tom missing yet another birthday to the back of my thoughts as I started to make them breakfast.

"Right, come on, kiddos, it's late, it's definitely time for bed." I scoffed as I herded Charlotte and Esme into the house whilst I carried a sleeping James in with my other arm.

"But daddy hasn't called yet. We can't go to sleep until daddy's called." Esme returned. My eyes widened, my heart dropping and my mouth falling open as I realised that she was right. Tom hadn't called. I had taken the kids out to bowling, a movie and then dinner for James' birthday, and we had been so busy all day that I hadn't even noticed the stark absence of birthday texts and messages from my husband to our son. I was going to fucking kill him.

"You're right, Esme, but you'll have to talk to him tomorrow. It's way too late to be up for all of you, especially James. Go get into your pyjamas, girls, whilst I put your brother to bed." I nodded. They returned it before heading up the stairs. I sighed and bit my lip as I followed after them, tears pricking my eyes as I kissed James' curls. I couldn't believe that Tom hadn't called. I really didn't want to do my husband the disservice of thinking that he'd forgotten about what date it was, but I couldn't help but think that right now. I gently carried a still sleeping James up the stairs and into his room, my knees carefully bending to lower me enough to turn on his nightlight before gently laying my son down into his bed.

"Mhm...did daddy call?" He asked quietly, his eyes tiredly fluttering open slightly. I sighed and bit my lip, my heart breaking on behalf of my son as I gave him a small smile and sat down next to his body on the bed.

"No, sweetheart, he didn't, I'm sorry. I'm sure that he will tomorrow, though." I nodded and desperately tried to hold myself together as I pulled the covers over his body.

"But...today was my birthday. He promised to call on my birthday." He choked quietly as tears started to leave his eyes. I gulped harshly and bit my lip, tears starting to run down my own face at the sight of our son so upset. Because of his own father, too.

"Come here, bud, come to mummy." I sighed. The boy sniffled and tiredly rubbed his eye as he climbed onto my lap, my arms wrapping around him and my cheek resting against his curls as I gently cradled him.

"Why wouldn't he call if he loves me? Does daddy love me, mummy?" He asked quietly. My eyes wavered, my heart breaking even further at the poor boy's words as he cried and sniffled in my arms.

"Love, of course he does. Daddy is a very busy man, okay? You know that he's in another country right now being 'Spider-Man', and unfortunately, that sometimes means that he loses track of time and is very busy. But I promise you that your daddy loves you so much. He works as hard as he does to give you and your sisters the best life possible, and he does that because he loves and cares about you. I know that he should have called, and mummy will be telling him off for not calling, but I promise that he loves you. Okay?" I checked, my hand gently moving his curls out of his eyes as I looked down at him.

"Okay." He sniffed quietly. I sighed and bit my lip at him before gently picking him up and laying him back down in his bed.

"Time to sleep, darling, it's late. I love you so much, as does daddy. Goodnight." I gave him a small smile as I tucked him in again before leaning down and kissing his head.

"I love you too, mummy. Goodnight." He responded quietly before closing his eyes. I gulped and stood from the bed, my hands raising to wipe away the countless tears that had fallen as I left his room and gently shut the door behind me. I headed into the girls' room and leant down to kiss each of their heads too as a way to say goodnight before shutting their door too. As soon as I had, pure rage started to fill me.

"You are so fucking dead, Thomas Stanley Holland." I mumbled to myself as I rushed down the stairs and into the living room. I grabbed my phone and scrolled along to his number before pressing on it and holding the phone to my ear. After a few dial tones, he picked up.

"Hey, love-."

"Don't you dare, 'hey, love' me, do you realise what you've done?!" I exclaimed immediately.

"What?! Why are you yelling at me, what have I done?!" He returned.

"Look at the date on your phone, Thomas, look right fucking now." I spat. He sighed before I heard shuffling, making me stick my tongue in my cheek in anger as the sounds told me that he was looking at his phone.

"...Oh, fuck...oh my god, no, I thought that the thirteenth was tomorrow!" His voice sounded again, though it was a lot more panicked than it had just been. Telling me that he had realised what he'd done.

"James is in pieces, Tom. I've been reassuring him for the whole day that you'd call, I've tried calling you on multiple occasions, and he's just gone to bed in tears after asking me if you love him." I shook my head, my heart thumping harshly and tears pricking my eyes again as I relived the pain that my son had shown me.

"Oh god, he didn't, did he? Fuck, I feel awful." He choked.

"As you should, Tom. Your youngest child turned five today, and you didn't even call. You didn't text, there was no present, no anything. You really fucked up here. I'd love to reassure you right now, but I just can't." I gulped.

"I know, I know, and I get it, I'm just in shock right now. I can't believe that I forgot. I had it in my calendar of course, but my phone has been off all day or has been in my trailer because we've been filming, it didn't even occur to me to look at the date-fuck!" I heard him yell, making me bite my lip as Tom was clearly as upset that he'd forgotten as James was.

"Tommy, listen to me. He's upset, yes, but he's also only five, so you can make this right. You need to do it quickly, but you can turn this around." I spoke.

"What do I do, though, Y/N? I shouldn't have fucking forgotten in the first place, so I'll be fixing something that I shouldn't have ever needed to fix." He choked.

"I know, Tommy, but the fact is that you do need to fix it, and so figure out how you do that, okay?" I nodded to myself as I tried to calm him down. He sighed down the phone.

"Yeah, okay. I'll figure something out. I'm so sorry for forgetting, sweetheart, I'm so fucking sorry." He whispered. I bit my lip, my heart both so fucking angry at Tom and also so sad for him at the same time. I was furious that he had forgotten his own son's birthday, but it was also breaking me to hear him also so hurt and disappointed in himself for forgetting. We'd work through this, I just didn't know how yet.

"It's not me that you have to say sorry to. But I'm sure that James will forgive you. It's late, so I better go, but I needed to yell at you first." I chuckled quietly in an attempt to make him feel slightly better.

"It's okay, love, I completely deserved it." He returned the chuckle, making me smile and bite my lip.

"Talk tomorrow, Tommy. I love you." I spoke softly.

"I love you too, sweetheart. Goodnight." He responded. I pulled the phone away from my ear and hung up, a defeated sigh leaving my lips as I put my phone down on the sofa next to me and rested my hand against my head. I hated being so harsh to Tom, but this wasn't something light that he'd forgotten, it was our child's birthday. All that I was hoping for right now was that he'd be able to make up for it with James.

Tom's P.O.V

Tom opened the door to his trailer, a tired sigh leaving his lips as he finally finished what had turned out to be an extremely long and hard day onset. He slumped down onto the sofa before grabbing his phone and turning it back on, given that it had been off all day. As soon as it turned on, it started vibrating into life with a call from Y/N. Tom smiled to himself at the sight of his wife's smiling face and her name, his heart still fluttering at the thought of talking to her even after fifteen years together. To Tom, that was true love. He pressed the green button to pick up the call before placing his phone to his ear.

"Hey, love-."

"Don't you dare, 'hey, love' me, do you realise what you've done?!" Y/N exclaimed immediately. Tom's eyes widened. That was not the greeting that he'd been expecting.

"What?! Why are you yelling at me, what have I done?!" He returned.

"Look at the date on your phone, Thomas, look right fucking now." She spat. He sighed before pulling the phone away from his ear to look at it. He swiped the screen to go to the calendar app. That was when he saw it. His eyes widened, his heart dropping as he saw the date. The fucking date...that was the thirteenth. AKA...their son's birthday. Tom gulped harshly, his stomach already twisting in anxiety. He had forgotten to call his son...on his birthday. It was unintentional of course, Tom could have sworn that it was the twelfth today, and because he'd been onset all day, he hadn't seen anything with the date on it. Regardless, he'd still fucked up. And he knew it. He gulped harshly, his eyes wavering as he held the phone back to his ear.

"...Oh, fuck...oh my god, no, I thought that the thirteenth was tomorrow!" He exclaimed.

"James is in pieces, Tom. I've been reassuring him for the whole day that you'd call, I've tried calling you on multiple occasions, and he's just gone to bed in tears after asking me if you love him." Y/N admitted. Tom's eyes wavered at his wife's words, his heart further shattering at her confession that him missing the call had led to his son doubting that he loved him. That hurt more than anything. As a dad who travelled most of the time, Tom's biggest fear with his children was that him constantly being away from home would lead them to start questioning if he wanted to be with them, or if he loved them. Of course he did love them and would do absolutely anything for them, hence why he worked so hard to give them the lives that they deserved. But now his worst fear of missing a big event and causing doubt had happened, and that was breaking him from the inside out.

"Oh god, he didn't, did he? Fuck, I feel awful." He choked and shook his head, the man standing from the sofa as he ran his hand through his curls, something that he always did when stressed or upset.

"As you should, Tom. Your youngest child turned five today, and you didn't even call. You didn't text, there was no present, no anything. You really fucked up here. I'd love to reassure you right now, but I just can't." Y/N returned.

"I know, I know, and I get it, I'm just in shock right now. I can't believe that I forgot. I had it in my calendar of course, but my phone has been off all day or has been in my trailer because we've been filming, it didn't even occur to me to look at the date-fuck!" He yelled, tears streaming down his face as he kicked himself over and over for the fact that he'd forgotten. He'd done the one thing that he promised that he'd never do, and that was forget about one of his children.

"Tommy, listen to me. He's upset, yes, but he's also only five, so you can make this right. You need to do it quickly, but you can turn this around." Y/N spoke.

"What do I do, though, Y/N? I shouldn't have fucking forgotten in the first place, so I'll be fixing something that I shouldn't have ever needed to fix." He choked.

"I know, Tommy, but the fact is that you do need to fix it, and so figure out how you do that, okay?" Y/N tried to reassure him. He sighed and nodded to himself, his fingers still pulling at his hair as he tried to think of what to do to make this right.

"Yeah, okay. I'll figure something out. I'm so sorry for forgetting, sweetheart, I'm so fucking sorry." He whispered.

"It's not me that you have to say sorry to. But I'm sure that James will forgive you. It's late, so I better go, but I needed to yell at you first." She chuckled quietly, making Tom smile through the tears and look down as he could tell that his wife's words were being said in an attempt to make him feel even slightly better.

"It's okay, love, I completely deserved it." He returned the chuckle.

"Talk tomorrow, Tommy. I love you." Y/N spoke softly.

"I love you too, sweetheart. Goodnight." He responded. The line went dead, making Tom sigh as he pulled the phone away from his ear. He bit his lip, his entire body feeling numb with sadness as he tried to comprehend the fact that yes, he had missed his son's fifth birthday. That fucking hurt. And now, he had to figure out a way to make it right.

Y/N's P.O.V

"Hey, I said only one pancake each, no more." I shook my head, the three kids sitting at the breakfast bar with pancakes on their plates as I sipped my coffee.

"But Esme doesn't want the rest of it." Charlotte whined.

"So, Tessa can have the rest. You know the rules, you get the same of everything, it's not fair if you get one and a half pancakes just because Esme doesn't want it all." I stated, making Charlotte sigh as I took the bit of Esme's pancake that she didn't want before putting it into Tessa's food bowl. Suddenly the doorbell rang, making all of us look up. My eyebrows furrowed, confusion filling my mind as I was completely unsure of who would be at the house at nine a.m. on a Sunday morning.

"Charlie, go get that, will you?" I asked. Charlotte nodded before hopping down and running out of the kitchen, making me sigh and give Esme and James small smiles as they continued to eat and play.

"DADDY!" My eyes widened as I heard Charlotte's voice, as did Esme's and James'.

"Daddy?!" James squealed as he and Esme jumped down from the bar before running out too.

"What the fuck, Tom?" I mumbled to myself as I rushed after them. I got to the hallway, my eyes widening and my heart jumping as surely enough, Tom stood at the open front door.

"Hello, my little munchkins! Daddy missed you so much, oh my god, it's so good to be home!" He laughed, my husband's arms wrapped around all three kids and his lips pressing to their heads as Esme and James clung onto his legs.

"It's good to have you home, too." I spoke up. Tom looked up at me as I spoke, his eyes wavering but his lips curling into a smile as he saw me.

"Hey, beautiful. You okay?" He asked.

"Mhm." I nodded and crossed my arms over my chest as I leant against the hallway wall.

"Okay, kids, mummy and daddy need to have a talk. So, Charlie and Esme, why don't you two play upstairs, and James, I'm going to need you to be a really big boy and go sit in the living room by yourself for a second, and behave. Can you guys do that for me?" Tom smiled down at them. I couldn't help but chuckle and shake my head, Tom never failing to be simply perfect with our children when he was home.

"Yeah!" All of them squealed as Charlotte and Esme ran upstairs whilst James ran into the living room. I sighed and bit my lip, Tom returning it as he walked towards me.

"What happened? You had a full schedule, your next break isn't for two months." I scoffed as he leant down and kissed me before wrapping his arms around my waist.

"I know, but after forgetting to call yesterday, I knew that just sending a present or calling today wouldn't be enough. So, I pulled some strings and got three days off now. Means that I can fully make it up to James by taking him out somewhere today or tomorrow." He nodded. I returned it and bit my lip.

"You should go and talk to him. For the record, though, it's amazing to have you back. As always." I gave him a small smile.

"It's good to be back." He returned, making me chuckle as he kissed me again before letting me go and heading into the living room. I bit my lip and followed him in, my heart already starting to pump more harshly in anticipation of this conversation as we walked in.

"Hey, sweetheart. Come and sit on daddy's lap." Tom smiled as he picked James up and sat down on the sofa before sitting our son onto his lap. I sat down next to them, James looking at Tom with identical eyes to his own as he waited for what his dad would say.

"So, mate, yesterday was your birthday. Did you have a good day? Did you get loads of cool presents?" Tom smiled.

"Yeah! Mummy got me a 'Spider-Man' cake, and-and-and we went to bowling and then food and then a movie, and I got loads of cool stuff, and it was really cool!" He squealed, making both of us chuckle at how adorable our son was.

"I'm so glad, love! Though, I'm sure that it would have been better if daddy had called, huh." Tom stated. James' smile disappeared as he nodded, making Tom sigh and return the nod as he wrapped his arms around his son.

"I'm so, so, so sorry that I forgot to call, James. I'm not going to try and excuse my behaviour by saying that I was busy or anything like that, what I did wasn't okay, and I shouldn't have forgotten. But I want you to know something. Mummy said that you asked if I still loved you, because I forgot to call, and that's a completely understandable question. But I want you to know that I will always love you. You, your mummy, and your sisters are my world, darling. You guys are my universe, everything that I do is for you. I know that it's really hard when I'm away a lot, I know that you guys miss me so much, and I know that because I miss you just as much. But I promise you, James, that I love you so, so much. I will never stop loving you, okay? No matter what I do, no matter how many times I mess up or forget something, I always love you. You don't ever need to question if I love you again. Nothing that will ever make you question whether or not I love you will ever happen again, okay?" Tom checked, tears pricking my husband's eyes as he raised his hand and gently moved some of James' hair out of his eyes. I bit my lip and also tried not to cry, my heart filling with love for Tom in that moment. James was still too young to fully understand, but I believed Tom. I knew that he'd always love us no matter what, and that was what I always held on to whenever he was away.

"Okay, daddy. I love you too." James nodded, his voice quiet as he looked at his dad.

"I know that you do, buddy, I know. Come here." Tom smiled gently, James returning it as the boy sat up on Tom's lap and wrapped his arms around his neck in a hug. I watched with glassy eyes, Tom sighing and returning the hug as he looked at me.

"He'll be okay." I whispered. He gave me a small smile and nodded as James pulled away.

"Now, go get shoes and socks on, because I'm taking you out for a birthday treat! How does that sound?" Tom smiled. James' eyes widened.

"YAY!" The boy screamed, making us laugh as he quickly scrambled off of the sofa and rushed out of the room to get ready. I chuckled and sighed as I propped my elbow against the back of the sofa and rested my head on my hand, Tom looking at me as he rested a hand on my thigh.

"You think that he'll be okay, sweetheart?" He sighed. I returned it and bit my lip. "I think that he's five, I think that he'll forgive you the second that you buy him a present or take him somewhere cool, and I think that it really shows your love that you flew back as soon as you realised that you'd missed it. I think that he'll be fine." I reassured with a nod.

"Good, because I can't bear the thought of ever losing any of you. I'd rather die than live without you and the kids." He choked and shook his head.

"It's good that you'll never have to live without us then, isn't it?" I teased lightly.

"That it is, love, that it is." He chuckled, making me smile as he leant in and gently kissed me.
