Family bonding *part 2* (Tom Holland)
I sat in the hospital bed, my glassy eyes glued to the perfect baby girl who had been born just half an hour ago, and was now lying asleep in my arms. I bit my lip and gently traced my finger along the skin of her cheek, her lips forming into a small and tired smile at the action. I chuckled and shook my head, a tear leaving my eye at how simply perfect and gorgeous mine and Tom's daughter already was. I looked up as I heard the door open. Tom gave me a small smile as he walked in, making me return it before looking back down at her.
"How's she doing? Still sleeping?" he asked quietly as he sat down on the bed next to me and curled his arm around my waist so that I started to rest against his chest.
"Incredibly soundly. As if she didn't just take twenty hours to get out of me." I whispered back, making Tom smirk and kiss my head.
"You really did do so well, my love. My hand is definitely broken, but you did so well." He teased. I chuckled and shook my head as I looked at him.
"So, what are we thinking for names? I know that we narrowed it down to either 'Jessica' or 'Harriet'." I nodded. Tom furrowed his eyebrows in thought, my husband chewing on his lip as he clearly contemplated what name he preferred more for our precious daughter.
"I like 'Jessica'. She looks like a 'Jessica'." He nodded. I returned it and bit my lip as I turned my head to look at her again.
"Yeah. She does." I agreed, my voice still quiet as I tried not to wake her up. The last year had been crazy for our little family, starting with me having found out that I was pregnant only a month after Oscar's dad had bailed on taking him to Disneyland, and so Tom had stepped up as my son's stepdad to take us to a theme park instead. Whilst Tom and Oscar had been close before the trip, that day had done wonders for their relationship, and so as a family, we had only gone from strength to strength since finding out that our family would be expanding. I still remembered the day that we had told Oscar, tears pricking my eyes as nothing but happiness came with that memory. For more than just that reason, too.
"Are you sure that you're ready to tell him? What if he asks how it happened?" Tom gulped, making me playfully roll my eyes at my husband as we sat on the sofa in the living room, and waited for my mum to bring Oscar back from school.
"He's six, Tommy, he doesn't know to ask how pregnancy happens. And if he does, I don't know...we say that I swallowed a seed or something." I teased and shook my head. Tom's eyes widened.
"What?!" He laughed.
"Trust me, Tommy, to a six-year-old boy, mummy having a baby in her stomach because of swallowing a seed is a lot more plausible than mummy having a baby in her stomach because step-daddy fucked her." I nodded.
"Fair." He chuckled and shook his head, making me smile and kiss his cheek. As if on cue, we heard the sound of the front door opening.
"Y/N, love?" My mum's voice called out.
"Living room, mum!" I yelled back. Within seconds, Oscar ran into the room, both mine and Tom's eyes brightening at the sight of our son.
"MUMMY!" The little boy screamed, making us all laugh as he ran up to the sofa and I picked him up to sit him on my lap.
"Hey, Oz! How was school, sweetheart?" I smiled at him.
"It was so good! We played so many games, and we started a new lesson about our families, so I talked about how Tom is an actor!" He beamed. I bit my lip and looked at Tom, my husband beaming just as widely and clearly trying not to cry at how sweet our son was as he kissed Oscar's head.
"That's so cool, mate! I bet that everyone enjoyed hearing about that, huh." Tom smiled. Oscar giggled and nodded, making me return the smile as I looked up at my mum.
"You telling him now?" She asked as she raised her eyebrow. I nodded and bit my lip, making her return the nod as she started to walk back towards the doorway.
"I'll leave you two to it, then. Bye, love." She smiled at Oscar.
"Bye, grandma." He gave her a wave before she disappeared and the sound of the front door shutting rang out seconds later. I took a deep breath, the anxiety starting to creep in now that we were alone as I continued to cuddle Oscar on my lap, and Tom's hand soothingly rested on my thigh in reassurance.
"Oscar, sweetie, Tom and I have something to tell you." I stated. His smile dipped slightly as he looked between us.
"Okay. Is it good or bad?" He asked.
"It's good, Oz, very good. Very exciting." Tom smiled as he gently moved a strand of Oscar's hair out of his eyes.
"Oscar, in about six months, our family is going to grow. You're going to be a big brother to either a little girl or a little boy, because mummy has another baby in her tummy." I nodded, my eyes glued to my son's face as I desperately tried to gauge his reaction. His eyes widened, his mouth falling open as he looked down at my stomach.
"Woah." He gasped quietly, making Tom chuckle and shake his head as I smiled.
"Are you happy about that, Oz? Because mummy and I want you to know that we'll always love you, even when the new baby is here. You becoming a big brother is a really important job, and it won't mean that you're loved any less. Can you be a really good big brother to your younger sibling for us?" Tom cooed. Oscar nodded eagerly as he looked between us.
"I'll be the bestest big brother ever! I'll always play with them and-and I'll share my toys, and I'll even share mummy!" He exclaimed, making us both laugh as he excitedly bounced on my lap.
"That's perfect, sweetheart, you'll be the best older sibling if you do that." I smiled, tears pricking my eyes at how perfectly he was reacting at the news that soon, he would no longer be an only child.
"Go on, mate, go put your school bag away." Tom chuckled as he gently ruffled the boy's hair.
"I'll help you, sweetie, let's go." I nodded, knowing that I had to get Oscar alone for the second part of my plan as I picked him up from my lap. I put him down on the floor before standing up and taking his hand. I smiled at Tom, making him return it and give me a wink as I started to walk Oscar to his bedroom.
"Go on then, love, you know where everything goes." I cooed as I turned his light on and he started to put his stuff away. I watched him with my lip in between my teeth, my heart starting to thump more harshly again at the prospect of asking Oscar what I was about to. I was sure that I already knew his answer, but with something so personal and intimate, there was always room for doubt.
"Honey, sit down for me, there's something that I want to talk to you about." I stated, Oscar happily jumping up onto his bed as I sat down next to him. I bit my lip and looked anxiously at my son.
"Oz, do you know what adoption is?" I asked. He shook his head, making me gulp and nod as I took his small hands into mine.
"So, you know that you came from mummy and daddy, and that Tom isn't your real daddy. But adoption is where your mummy and daddy aren't people that you came from, but they still love and look after you just as much." I explained.
"Well...Tom is my daddy, then." He nodded. I bit my lip as my heart swelled at his words, tears pricking my eyes at the simply perfect relationship that my son and husband shared.
"Thing is, honey, that you have to sign some special papers to make Tom officially your daddy. But, I think that that's a good idea, especially given that you'll be a big brother soon. So, if you want him to be, I'm going to ask Tom to adopt you, so he's officially your daddy. Your other daddy will still be your daddy, but it means that Tom will be too. How does that sound, my love?" I checked, my eyes flicking over his face in order to try and gauge his reaction as I moved some hair out of his face.
"I like it. I want Tom to be my daddy too." He nodded and smiled. I couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief, my heart filling with love and draining of anxiety as I returned his smile.
"Brilliant, darling. Well, then, when the baby comes, we'll ask Tom together if he wants to be your daddy. How does that sound?" I cooed. He nodded and smiled again, making me return it as I pulled him into my arms. He returned the hug, my hand gently holding his head against my chest as I cradled him. I couldn't help but let a few tears slip from my eyes, my life having turned out exactly how I had wanted it to. I was with the love of my life, who not only worshipped the ground that I walked on, but also loved my son like he was his own. Now, I was also having a baby with Tom, and he was going to adopt Oscar too. This was perfect, and I never wanted it to end.
"Love." I snapped out of my thoughts as Tom called for me, making me turn my head to look at him. He chuckled and bit his lip as his eyes flicked over my face.
"You okay? You were totally zoned out." He teased.
"I'm great. Was just thinking about how perfect our life is." I smiled.
"That it is, love, that it is." He nodded, making me chuckle and look back at Jessica in adoration. Suddenly, the door to my room opened, making both of us look back up as Oscar rushed into the room, followed by my mum.
"Mummy!" He laughed. I gently pressed my finger to my lips.
"Sh, darling, I know that it's exciting, but your little sister is sleeping." I whispered, making his eyes widen as he nodded and rushed towards the bed.
"Wow." He whispered as he looked at her settled in my arms.
"Come here, mate, let's get you a better view." Tom spoke softly as he stood from the bed and gently picked Oscar up before placing the boy on the sheets by my legs. Oscar scooted forward and looked at his sister, my lip in between my teeth and tears pricking my eyes as I could already tell that he was absolutely enthralled by her.
"She's so cute, mummy." He smiled and looked at me.
"She is, isn't she? She looks like you." I chuckled, making him giggle and gently peel back the blanket around her to see her face better.
"Love, I'm just going to leave this here." My mum spoke as she took the envelope out of her bag and placed it on the table. My eyes widened slightly, my heart leaping in anxiety as I knew what it was.
"Thanks, mum." I nodded.
"I'm going to head off now, but congratulations, you two. She's perfect." She smiled.
"Thank you." Tom returned, making her give him a small nod as she left the room. I bit my lip as he immediately walked over to the table and picked up the envelope before looking at me.
"What's this, sweetheart?" He asked.
"Open it and see." I nodded as I desperately tried not to sound as terrified as I felt. His eyebrows furrowed, confusion spreading over his face as he looked down at it. I gulped harshly and tried to maintain my composure as he opened it and unfolded the papers. His eyes flicked over the writing, his orbs slowly but surely widening as he read it.
"What-these are adoption papers, Y/N, what are these for? We're not giving Jessica up." He scoffed and shook his head as he looked at me in confusion.
"Of course we're not, Tommy. They're not for her." I stated as I raised my spare hand and started to gently stroke Oscar's hair. Tom clearly only got more confused as he started to walk towards the bed.
"I don't understand." He mumbled. I bit my lip and looked at Oscar.
"We've just grown as a family. We now have a beautiful baby girl together, and we've had a son together for the last few years. But, he's not legally yours. So...Oscar and I were wondering...if you'd want to adopt him...and become his legal father." I explained quietly, my heart almost bursting out of my chest in anticipation of what he would say. Immediately, Tom's eyes wavered, a choke leaving his lips as they fell open.
"W-what...you want me to adopt him?" He choked.
"You're already his dad in every way but legally, Tommy. I was terrified when we first started dating that me already having a child would be a deal breaker, but you've never been anything but amazing with him. You love him, you care for him, you'd die for him. To both of us, you're his dad already, and have been for years now. So, why not finally make it official?" I gulped. He shook his head and choked again, tears starting to leave his eyes as he looked at me.
"Yes. Oh my god, yes, I'll adopt him-I'll adopt you, Oscar, yes, I'll be your dad!" He laughed as tears continued to roll down his face. I choked in relief, tears also starting to leave my eyes too as my heart swelled with happiness.
"Really?" I smiled.
"Yes, really-come here, Oz, come here." Tom smiled as he bent down and opened his arms. Oscar excitedly jumped off of the bed and rushed into his arms, my husband immediately picking him up and hugging him tightly as he squeezed his eyes shut. I watched from the bed, my heart so full of love and happiness at the idea that finally, we would be a real family. Of course we always had been, but Tom adopting Oscar and legally becoming his dad would only solidify that, would only make us more legitimate as a family. And I couldn't see that being more perfect if I tried.
"I love you, sweetheart. And I love Oscar, and I love Jessica, god, I love you all so much." Tom choked and shook his head as he sat back down by my legs on the bed with Oscar on his lap.
"I love all of you too. My perfect little family." I smiled as tears continued to roll down our faces.
"Our perfect little family." He nodded, only making my smile widen as he took my hand and kissed it. Tom was right. It was our perfect little family.
