Precious (Peter Parker)

Requested by coffee_addict2005: Peter and Y/N find out that they're expecting, and then they find out that they're going to have twins. But then something happens, resulting in the babies coming early and so they have to be in the NICU

*Please note: as the request suggests, this imagine contains themes of traumatic pregnancy and birth, so please be wary of that when reading, or don't read it at all if you think that you'll be triggered by it. Remember that I'm always here if people need to talk. Thank you*

I sat in the NICU department of Queens general hospital, my head propped up against my hand as I gently stroked our daughter's face using the gloves that were attached to the incubator that she was in. I sighed and bit my lip, tears still pricking my eyes at how small she was. The last seven months felt like a blur, and yet somehow I could also remember every single moment of the pregnancy. Those memories started with the moment that Peter and I found out that there was a pregnancy. I couldn't help but smile, happiness filling my heart as I remembered that day.

Peter and I sat on our bed, tears rolling down both of our faces as we looked at the negative pregnancy test. I sobbed quietly, Peter's arms holding me and cradling me on his lap as he pressed his lips to the top of my head.

"It's okay, baby. It'll happen next month. We'll try again, we'll get pregnant. We just need to be patient." he cooed as his hand gently ran through my hair.

"We've been patient for two years now, Pete. I was getting sick, I had fucking weird cravings, I didn't get my period, I still haven't. I was sure that I was pregnant." I choked.

"Honestly, I was hopeful too, angel. But it's okay. We try again." he reassured. I sighed and looked up at him, making him give me a small smile as he moved the hair out of my face.

"We try again." I whispered. He nodded before leaning in and gently pecking my lips. I returned it, forcing myself to give him a small smile as I stood up and headed into the bathroom to clean myself up.

Peter and I sat on the sofa, my legs over his lap as he watched TV and I scrolled through social media. A certain article appeared on my screen, making my eyebrows furrow as I read the words "product recall on pregnancy tests". My eyes widened.

"Pete." I mumbled, making him look at me as I sat up.

"Hmm?" he asked, his hand on my thigh.

"What brand of pregnancy test did you buy me?" I gulped.

"Um...it was "clear answer" or something. Why?" he asked. I looked up at him, making his eyebrow furrow.

"Babe, what's going on?" he scoffed.

"Are you sure that that's the brand that you bought me? Because they've had to recall their tests for providing false negatives." I nodded. His eyes widened.

"Oh my god." he mumbled before shooting up and grabbing his jacket.

"Get three or four of the most expensive brand. We need to be sure!" I called after him. He returned it, giving me an excited smile as he rushed out of the door.

I paced the floor of the bedroom, Peter sitting on the bed next to the pregnancy tests.

"It makes sense if you are pregnant. Things have obviously been different with you for the last two months." he scoffed. I looked at him with furrowed eyebrows, making his eyes widen slightly.

Oh, I mean...you've been fine." he smiled sheepishly. I rolled my eyes before looking at the tests. My eyes widened as one started to show up.

"Pete." I gulped, sitting next to him as I grabbed the tests.

"It's going to be okay. Even if you aren't pregnant, we just try again." he reassured. I took a deep breath and nodded, my heart in my throat as the lines on all four tests started to show up. My eyes widened, a breathless laugh leaving my lips. My eyes wavered, tears starting to leave my eyes as Peter looked over my shoulder.

"Oh my god...they're all positive." he mumbled. I nodded and bit my lip as I looked at him.

"I'm pregnant!" I laughed. He returned it, laughs leaving our lips as he tightly hugged me and pulled me back down onto the bed.

"We did it! You're pregnant, we're going to have a baby!" Peter exclaimed.

"I'm so happy, Pete. We finally get what we always wanted!" I laughed and shook my head. He returned it, both of us smiling from ear to ear as he leant in and kissed me.

I couldn't help but smile as the memory replayed in my head. It had been a roller-coaster of a day. We'd started off crying because we thought that I wasn't pregnant, and had ended it crying because we found out that I was. My heart had been so happy at the idea that we'd finally be parents. It got even happier when we'd gone to the first scan and discovered what we did.

"I'm just saying, you're already quite big for only being four months along. I honestly think that it's twins, babe." Peter chuckled, our hands joined as we walked to the hospital. I looked up at him.

"Are you calling me fat?" I teased. His eyes widened.

"N-no! Of course not! I-I just, you're bigger-but it's good! Because that means that t-the baby is healthy-."

"Relax, babe, I was only teasing." I reassured, making him sigh in relief as we headed into the prenatal department.

"Y/N Parker, here for my four-month scan." I smiled at the receptionist.

"Great, I'll check you in so that the doctor knows that you're here." he returned.

"Thanks." I nodded before Peter and I sat down. He looked at me.

"What do you think it'll be?" he asked. I bit my lip as I thought.

"I don't know. Of course I don't care as long as they're healthy, but I've always wanted a daughter. And then I want a son, so that we can have one of each." I explained.

"I like that logic." he chuckled, making me smile at him.

"Mrs Y/N Parker?" I looked up as I heard my name.

"That's me." I smiled, Peter and I standing up and following the doctor who had called my name.

"How are you feeling today?" she asked as she shut the door and I lay on the propped up bed, Peter sitting next to me.

"I'm okay. The morning sickness is manageable and the cravings aren't bad either." I shrugged.

"Brilliant. Now I just need to check up on the baby." she smiled. I returned it and bit my lip, nerves filling my stomach as I took Peter's hand. The gel was squirted onto my belly before the stick was moved around.

"Here we go." the doctor mumbled, all three of us looking at the screen. I choked, a tear leaving my eye as we saw the fetus and heard the steady heartbeat.

"That's our child, angel. They're perfect." Peter smiled, making me bite my lip and look at him.

"Oh." the doctor scoffed. Peter and I looked at her.

"What? Is something wrong?" Peter gulped.

"No, not at all, you two are actually very lucky. I'm detecting two heartbeats." she admitted. My eyes widened, as did Peter's as we looked at each other.

"Twins?" I scoffed.

"Yup. Looks like one of each, too. I can see double of everything that we need, apart from two little male parts. You're pregnant with a girl and a boy." she smiled. I choked, more tears leaving my eyes as I looked at Peter.

"This just got a lot more scary. We were only prepared for one baby." I gulped.

"Hey, no, this is amazing! We've got two little miracles, babe. We can do this." he reassured. I sighed and nodded, though nerves still sat in my stomach as I looked at the screen.

"I told you that it was twins." Peter chuckled quietly. I rolled my eyes playfully and lightly slapped his chest.

"Ow, I deserved that." he smiled, making me return it and bite my lip as I looked back at the ultrasound.

I still remembered how I felt when we'd found out that we were having twins. At first, it was a feeling of sheer terror. After all, we'd only prepared for one baby. Sure, Peter's job as an Avenger meant that we were completely financially stable, but one wrong move in a mission meant that I'd now go from only having one child to look after by myself, to having two of the same age. But then I had seen how happy and relaxed Peter had been about it, and that had calmed me. He was over the moon, and so the feeling of pure happiness had also spread to me too. I sighed and bit my lip, tears still running down my face as I watched her breathe shallowly. How had everything gone so wrong?

Peter and I walked into the hospital, hand in hand.

"I can't believe that we're already here. The seven-month scan." he chuckled, making me smile as we wandered through the hospital. Though, with the size of me, I had been waddling since six months gone.

"I know. How weird is it that they'll be here in just two months?" I smiled.

"Little Ben and Mary." he nodded, making me bite my lip as we got to the prenatal unit.

"Ah, Y/N." we turned around and smiled as my doctor walked towards us.

"My last patient cancelled, so I can take you in straight away. How are you feeling?" she asked as we headed into her office.

"Very fat, and one of the twins is always kicking my bladder. I'm convinced that they're in cahoots to keep me up all hours." I joked, making Peter and the doctor laugh as I lay down on the bed.

"Let's see what's going on in there." she smiled as she squirted the gel onto my bump and started to move the stick around. I bit my lip, tears pricking my eyes as Peter and I stared intently at the ultrasound.

"This never gets old." Peter mumbled, making me shake my head as he kissed my hand.

"Oh." the doctor muttered. We looked at her.

"What's wrong?" I gulped as she pressed the red button on the wall, making alarms start to blare.

"We need to take you to c-section now. Your son doesn't have enough fluid around him, and so his heart is failing." she admitted. My eyes widened and I looked at Peter.

"What? But she's only seven months along, surely that's too soon." Peter choked.

"I'm sorry, but it's either you lose your son now, or we take them both out now and give your son a chance." she explained.

"What about our daughter?" I gulped.

"She'll also be very small, but she's strong enough to live outside of the womb, since all of the fluid has been around her. I'm so sorry, Mr and Mrs Parker, but if you want to save both of your children, we need to get them out." she stated. I choked, tears rapidly leaving my eyes as I looked at Peter.

"We have to, angel. They're our miracles, we can't lose one of them." he choked. I bit my lip and shook my head as I looked back at the doctor.

"Do it. Save our children." I nodded. She returned it, giving us sympathetic looks as she raised the bars on my bed and started to race me out of the room.

I lay in the operating theatre, Peter next to me in scrubs with his hand around mine.

"You okay, angel?" he mumbled, his spare hand gently combing through my hair. I shook my head, tears leaving my eyes as I looked at him.

"It wasn't meant to happen like this. They were both meant to be okay, I was meant to be strong and give birth to them normally. I was meant to protect them." I cried.

"Hey, hey, shush, stop that, babe." he gently cooed as he kissed my head. I bit my lip as I looked at him.

"I know that this isn't how it was supposed to go. But they will be okay, we're doing this so that they'll be okay. Which is also how you're protecting them. You could have said no and risked losing our son, but instead you did this and saved both of them. You've done nothing wrong, and you're also not any less of a woman because you didn't give birth to them in the conventional way. You're not to blame for any of this." he reassured. I choked and nodded as I looked at him.

"I love you, Pete. So much." I whispered.

"I love you too, babe. And I love our children, who are both going to be okay." he nodded. I returned it and bit my lip. Suddenly, we heard crying, making our eyes widen.

"Congratulations. Your baby girl is here." the nurse smiled, making us choke as she was briefly held up before being taken away.

"W-what about our son? Is he okay?" I gulped.

"Give me two seconds...congrats, your baby boy is here too." the nurse spoke as she held up our son. But something was wrong.

"Why isn't he crying?" Peter choked.

"He's having some trouble, so we just have to help him. He'll be okay." the nurse reassured.

"Please save him, we can't lose him." I cried.

"And you won't, because...he's breathing." my eyes widened as we heard a second cry.

"Oh, thank god." I choked, Peter's tears landing in my hair as he kissed my head.

"You did it, babe. They're here and they're safe." he nodded. I returned it and choked, Peter taking my hand and kissing it.

So, here we were. With both of the twins fighting for their lives a week after I had given birth to them. But they were getting stronger by the day, and that's what mattered. I looked at the incubator next to the one that Mary was in, my smile widening slightly as Ben also lay there, his eyes closed and his breathing shallow. But he was still alive.

"Mommy and daddy are so proud of you two. You're our little fighters." I whispered as I put one hand in each container so that I could gently stroke both of their heads. I looked up and gave Peter a small smile as he walked towards me with two coffees in his hands.

"Here you go, babe." he nodded as he sat next to me.

"Urgh, I need this. I didn't sleep at all last night." I mumbled as I took a sip of it.

"Neither did I. Too worried about these two." he chuckled. I returned it and nodded as I cuddled into Peter, him happily accepting it as I rested my head on his chest and he curled his arm around my waist.

"I still can't believe that they're ours. I know that we've got a long way to go with them, but my god, sweetheart. They're perfect." he choked and shook his head.

"And they're getting stronger. They're like their dad, they're fighters." I smiled, making Peter chuckle and kiss my head.

"We're going to get through this, angel. I just can't wait for the day that we finally get to take them home." he mumbled.

"Me neither, Pete. Me neither." I whispered, making him pull me closer as we continued to sit there, and look over our perfect children. Together.
