Memories (Peter Parker)

My eyes fluttered open, sleep leaving my body as the morning sun shone through the windows and flooded the room with light. I yawned and stretched out, my wedding and engagement rings on my finger contrasting to the soft feeling of the empty bed sheets next to me. I looked to the empty side, sighing as Peter wasn't there, like usual.

"Pete? Baby?" I called out as I propped myself up onto my elbows and looked around for the boy. Yet there was no sign of him. I sighed and lay back down. I brought my hand up to my face, my gaze dancing over the silver rings that graced my ring finger. I smiled and bit my lip, tears pricking my eyes as I remembered that night with Peter.

"So, where are you taking me?" I asked, my hand in Peter's as he walked us into the Avengers' Tower elevator.

"Up." He smiled as he pressed the up arrow on the elevator, making it start to rise. I looked at him.

"Sorry, but is our three-year-anniversary dinner really on the roof of this Tower?" I scoffed.

"Don't knock it until you've seen it, angel." He chuckled, making me roll my eyes playfully and smile at him as he continued to hold my hand in his. The elevator came to a halt on the roof of the tower and the glass doors slid open, making my eyes widen at what I saw. A small gasp left my lips, making Peter chuckle as I pulled him out of the elevator and towards the fairy-light-lit space.

"Pete...this is beautiful." I mumbled, looking around at the wooden canopy that was decorated with the lights. I looked around further, smiling and biting my lip at the white cloth-covered table that sat under the canopy, a single red rose in the vase and plates of food in front of both of the chairs.

"You like it, sweetheart?" he asked, looking at me as he curled his arms around my waist and pulled me into his body.

"You're right, I shouldn't have knocked it. It's beautiful, babe, I love it." I smiled and shook my head. He returned the smile and nodded before pulling away from me, making my eyebrows furrow.

"Pete, what are you doing?" I chuckled as he dug something out of his pocket.

"Something that I've wanted to do since the moment that I met you." He nodded, getting down on one knee. My eyes widened and I choked as he opened his fist to reveal a velvet box. Another choke left my lips as he opened the box to reveal a stunning engagement ring sat on the fabric.

"Peter." I gulped. He gave me a sheepish smile and bit his lip.

"Y/N, you are the best thing to ever have happened to me, I don't think that I'd be alive if it weren't for you. You make my life better in every way, and I love you for it. So," he started as he took my hand. I smiled and covered my mouth with my spare hand.

"Will you marry me?"

I bit my lip and smiled, the fond memory ending as I climbed out of bed and padded to the door of our bedroom.

"Baby? You up?" I called out again, sighing as I still got no response. I wandered into the kitchen, sighing at the mess of the place as I grabbed a mug and poured myself a coffee. I sat down at the island with my mug and checked my phone, sighing as I had several texts and missed calls from Tony. I rolled my eyes as the persistence of the man as I clicked on his number and held the phone to my ear.

"So you are alive." He picked up sarcastically, making me playfully roll my eyes.

"Can a busy woman not have a lie-in every so often?" I teased.

"It's noon, you and Pete are meant to meet with me for coffee in an hour." He scoffed.

"We'll be there." I nodded, grabbing a grape from the fruit bowl and popping it into my mouth.

"Sure. Anyway, how you holding up?" he asked. I sighed and looked down.

"Fine, I guess. As well as I can. You know that I don't like talking about it." I mumbled, my mind wandering back to the day of the mission.

"Are you sure that you're absolutely, one-hundred-percent needed for this mission?" I sighed, following Peter around like a lost puppy as he got ready.

"You know that Mr Stark wouldn't have asked me to come immediately if I wasn't, babe." He shrugged as he pressed the spider on his chest, making the spandex fit perfectly around his amazing body.

"Yeah, but, I don't know, it sounds a lot more dangerous than other missions." I gulped, nervously playing with my fingers. Peter stopped what he was doing and looked at me with furrowed eyebrows.

"Every mission is dangerous, angel, what's so special about this one? What aren't you telling me?" he chuckled, walking to me and curling his arms around my waist. I sighed and looked up at the tall boy.

"Nothing, I just...the older you get, the more I worry." I nodded.

"Are you suggesting that I'm not the fit and capable hero that I used to be?" he scoffed, making me laugh as he held a hand to his chest in fake offence.

"No, no, you're just as capable as the day that I met you. In more departments than just the hero one." I teased. He smirked and shook his head at me as he leant down and pressed our lips together.

"Peter, boss said that, quote "if you don't get your ass down here in the next thirty seconds, I'll tear you a new one" unquote." FRIDAY sounded. Peter groaned and broke the kiss.

"Tell him that I'm coming, FRIDAY." He nodded before looking at me.

"I love you, and I'll see you at dinner, okay?" he asked, letting me go so that he could grab his mask.

"I love you too, and be safe. Come back to me, Pete." I nodded.

"I always do." He smiled. I returned it as he gently took my neck and pressed our lips together again before pulling away and leaving the room. I sighed and looked down as I twiddled my fingers, hoping to god that he'd make it back in time for me to tell him.

"How many times do I have to say that I'm sorry for that mission, Y/N? I'm sorry, but it's been four years." Tony sighed, making me snap back to reality.

"Time doesn't change what happened, Tony. Nothing can change what happened." I scoffed and shook my head, tears pricking my eyes.

I ran into the medical part of the Avenger's Tower, my head whipping around desperately as I looked for Peter.

"Y/N." I turned around and took a shaky breath as Tony and Steve stood there.

"Where the fuck is my husband, Tony? Where is he?" I spat, storming towards them and making the pair gulp.

"Y/N, I...I'm so sorry." Tony gulped. I returned it, my eyes wavering as he pointed to inside one of the medical suites. I looked in and choked as Peter lay in the bed, wrapped in bandages and unconscious with countless tubes coming out of his arms and connecting to different machines.

"I told you that this wasn't safe. What the fuck happened?" I choked, looking at the men.

"The intel that Fury gave us was wrong. There were only meant to be fifty or so HYDRA agents to take out. Instead, there were closer to two hundred. He got shot." Tony admitted. I choked again and looked into the room, a tear leaving my eye at my dying husband.

"What are his chances?" I gulped, trying to wrap my head around the fact that this was actually happening. In a matter of hours, I was going to be a widow.

"Banner says that he doesn't have any. I'm sorry, Y/N. There's nothing we can do." Tony admitted quietly. I bit my lip harshly in an attempt to stop more tears, the metallic taste of blood soon filling my mouth. I opened the door and walked into the suite, the only thing that could be heard being the incredibly unsteady beat of the heart monitor. I sat in the chair by Peter's bed, tears streaming down my face as I looked at the beautiful boy that I was in love with.

"I'm here, Pete. It's okay to let go." I whispered, taking a deep breath as I raised my hand and started to comb my fingers through his hazel curls. I looked up.

"FRIDAY?" I asked.

"Vitals are fading, Y/N. I'm sorry." She responded. I nodded and bit my lip, squeezing my eyes shut as more tears left my eyes. It was as if Peter had waited for me to arrive, it was as if he knew that I was there, and therefore that he could now fade away.

"I love you, Pete. I love you, and I'm sorry." I cried, resting my head against his chest and continuing to comb my fingers through his hair as he slowly faded away, and his heart eventually stopped.

Silence filled the call, my eyes glued to the marble surface that I was sat at as tears left my eyes.

"What you thinking about?" Tony asked me softly. I bit my lip.

"Him." I replied simply, the single word enough for Tony to know who I was talking about.

"He was a good kid. I regret every day what happened to him." He admitted. I nodded, silently crying as I talked to the man.

"So do I, Tony. So do I." I replied.

"Mommy?" I looked up and gave Peter a small smile as he stood in the doorway to the kitchen.

"Hey, baby. You okay?" I asked, smiling at the tired three-year-old as he held his blanket and rubbed his hazel eyes that were identical to his dad's, his hazel locks also making him just a mini version of Peter senior.

"Yeah, but I heard talking." He mumbled as he walked into the room.

"It's just your uncle Tony, babe." I nodded before turning my attention back to the phone.

"Pete's up, Tony, so I'm going to go. We'll be at the Tower in thirty minutes." I spoke.

"Okay, kid. See you soon." He replied. I nodded before hanging up and looking at Peter as I got down from the island.

"What are we wearing today, bud? You want to wear your Spiderman onesie again and be like daddy?" I asked as I picked him up. Peter had died just after I had found out that I was pregnant, meaning that not only did he die without knowing that he was going to be a dad, but it also meant that I was raising our son without him knowing his father. Though I often told him stories about his dad, as well as keeping pictures of Peter everywhere and telling Peter junior that he looked exactly like his dad. Not to mention that the choice to name him after his dad was a good way to keep them connected.

"Yeah, I always want to be like daddy." The small boy giggled.

"Alright then, sweetie. Spiderman onesie it is." I smiled, kissing his hazel curls as I carried him into his room.
