"Put your hands together for the guy who won us the Quidditch Cup, Tom!" Fred cheered, making us all whoop and clap as Tom ran into the centre of the crowd. I laughed and shook my head as he got up on the table and raised his arms, making everyone laugh and cheer as he smiled widely.
"Thank you, thank you. It's always a pleasure to bring home the cup for Gryffindor!" he exclaimed. Everyone cheered again as Tom extended his hand to me. I bit my lip and placed my hand into his so that he could pull me up onto the table. As soon as I was up, he leant down and pressed our lips together. I smiled into it and held his face, everyone cheering and whooping as he held my waist. Tom and I had dated for almost two years now, since he was seventeen and I was sixteen. We had met at the start of school, when I had been placed into the house of Gryffindor. I had become best friends with Harry, Hermione and Ron, and had soon met all of Ron's siblings. And with Fred and George, came Tom Holland. The boy was best friends with the Weasley twins, and there had been an instant connection between the two of us from the moment that we met, aged twelve and eleven. Though we hadn't acted on it, the fear of being rejected by the other person and therefore ruining our friendship too strong in both of our minds to push for anything more than friends. That was until the Winter ball had been announced. Tom had asked to take me to it, and I had happily accepted. We had become official that night, had been a couple ever since and everything was perfect. Hence why we were currently standing on the main table in the Gryffindor common room, lips joined and everyone cheering as we celebrated Tom bringing home the cup for our house. He broke the kiss and smiled at me, making me return it and bite my lip.
"I love you, darling. So much." he shook his head.
"I love you too, Tommy. And I'm so proud of you." I chuckled. His smile widened and he leant down to kiss me again, making me return it as I held his face in my hands.
"Get a room already!" George yelled, making everyone laugh and cheer as Tom broke the kiss.
"Alright then, see everyone in the morning." Tom teased. Everyone clapped and whooped, making me laugh and shake my head as he took my hand and pulled me down from the table.
The memory of that night was a beautiful one, but the perfect moment was worlds away from where we now were. Where we now were, was hell. Tom and I were running through the school, hands joined as we tried to get as far away from Voldemort's army as possible. All of the times that Dumbledore had warned us to be vigilant and to pay attention in class because we'd need those seemingly useless skills one day, he had been right. We were going into the school's darkest hour, the doors barricaded and people prepping for a battle that not all of us would emerge from alive. This was it. And I was terrified.
"What do we do? Where do we go?" I gulped, both Tom and I looking around the chaotic scene of teachers attempting to herd terrified students to safety frantically.
"Fuck, I don't know. I know that Dumbledore said that Voldemort would come back, but I don't think that any of us actually believed it." Tom shook his head. I looked down the corridor and sighed in relief as Fred and George ran towards us.
"Guys, are you okay?" George gulped as he hugged me and Fred hugged Tom.
"We don't know what to do." I shook my head.
"We fight. That's all that we can do." Fred nodded. My eyes wavered and I looked at Tom, making him sigh as a tear rolled down his cheek.
"He's right. We can't sit back and do nothing." he shook his head.
"I know. That's why I'm terrified." I admitted. Tom's eyes wavered, a tear also rolling down his face as he pulled me into his arms for a tight hug. I returned it, my eyes squeezing shut and my heart breaking at the idea that this would potentially be the last time that I'd hug the love of my life. Because if one of us died during battle, it was over for the other one too. And that was ripping me apart.
"I love you so much, Y/N. I love you so fucking much." he choked as he pressed his lips to my hair.
"I love you too, Tommy. Don't you dare die on me." I teased lightly, making him laugh and choke as he looked down at me with glassy eyes.
"The same goes for you." he nodded. I returned it and gulped, our gazes glued to each other as the harsh reality set in.
"RUN!" Our eyes widened and we looked to the side as a massive mob of students ran around the corner and towards us.
"What the fuck?" Tom gulped as I pulled away from him but took his hand instead.
"The Death Eaters are in the school! They got in! Run!" one student yelled. My eyes widened further and everyone screamed as Death Eaters started to fly around the corner of the corridor and swirl above us, their magic already shooting down at students as they tried to pick us off.
"Run!" students continued to yell as they got to us. I yelped out as we were swept along, my hand being torn out of Tom's as we started to be pushed in opposite directions.
"TOMMY!" I screamed.
"Y/N! Fuck, Y/N!" he yelled, both of us desperately trying to push through the crowd to each other, but both of us being swept even further apart. I choked, tears streaming down my face as I stared at him through the chaos. He looked equally as broken, his stunning chocolate orbs filled with sadness as we got pulled further and further apart.
I ran through the school, my shoes clicking against the rubble as I ran through the deserted corridor. I had gotten split up from Tom god knows how long ago, and after Death Eaters had picked off a good amount of students whilst the rest of us had hidden, fought or found safety, I had found myself alone. I turned the corner and stopped in my tracks. My eyes widened, a choke leaving my lips as I saw a Death Eater stood over the body of the student who he'd obviously just killed. The poor girl didn't look older than thirteen or fourteen. He looked over his shoulder, a gruesome smirk curling onto his lips as he saw me.
"Another one? Fine by me." he teased, a horrific cackle leaving his lips as he raised his wand. A quick burst of magic shot out of it, making me yell out as I swished my own wand and countered his magic with mine. He raised his eyebrows, his smirk only widening as he started to stroll towards me. I clenched my jaw, my hand tightly gripping my wand. There was no way that I was going to die at the hands of one of these assholes. When I finally went out, it would be with Tom.
"A fighter, huh? Good, I like a challenge. She was far too easy to kill." he chuckled as he nodded to the body of the girl.
"She was a child." I spat.
"Are you not a child too, albeit a slightly older one? Doesn't make you any less scared, though, and it doesn't make you more powerful. I can smell it on you. You reek of fear." he taunted.
"We'll see, won't we?" I tilted my head to the side. His smirk widened as he nodded.
"I like you, my dear. Just a shame that I still have to kill you." he shrugged before quickly raising his wand. Magic shot out of it, my eyes widening as I raised my wand to counter it. My red energy shot out of my wand, colliding with the Death Eater's stream of green light as we started to fight. I gritted my teeth, my fingers tightening around my wand as I gave it all that I could. Slowly but surely, my magic started to push further against his, making his eyes widen as his stream of magic got increasingly small. I continued to push, a yell leaving my lips. This was life and death now. If I stopped for even a second, that would give him all the time that he needed to kill me. And so I had to kill him first. I kept pushing, my other hand raising to help grip my wand as my magic continued to overpower this. I couldn't believe that I was doing this, I couldn't believe that I was actually overpowering a Death Eater. I guessed that all of those years in school learning how to control and use our magic had paid off. I gave one last push, a cry leaving my lips as my power reached his want. The Death Eater yelled out, his body exploding as my magic finally got to him. I finally lowered my wand and panted heavily, my chest heaving and falling as the fact of what I had just done sunk in. I looked to my side, my eyes widening as another Death Eater now stood there with his wand raised. He smirked before firing at me, making me cry out as his magic launched me into the wall. My back collided with it, my body falling to the floor as my eyes fluttered shut.
Tom's P.O.V
Tom limped into the main hall, tears streaming down his face and dried blood all over his skin as he rushed in. He choked, his eyes widening as he saw the state of not only the school, but its occupants too. The bodies of students, teachers and members of the Order of the Phoenix alike lay dead on blankets on the floor. He looked around frantically, his heart pounding in his chest as he started to limp through the rows of bodies. He was utterly terrified that he would see Y/N lying amongst the dead, but he also knew that he had to find her. He looked up, his eyes widening as Hermione rushed towards him.
"Hermione, fuck, have you seen Y/N?" he gulped.
"Yeah, I was the one who found her." she nodded. His eyes wavered, his jaw clenching as he was silently begging for her to have found his girlfriend alive.
"And?" he choked.
"She was in a bad way, but she's alive. She's just down there." she reassured. Tom choked, a sigh of relief leaving his lips as he squeezed his eyes shut.
"Thank god. Thank you so much." he nodded, Hermione returning it as he started to desperately limp to where she was.
Y/N's P.O.V
"I know that it hurts, but we're nearly done." McGonagall nodded, me wincing with every wipe of the cloth against my wound as she cleaned me up.
"How bad is it?" I winced.
"It's deep, but you'll live. It missed anything important." she reassured. I sighed and nodded, the pain overtaking my body telling me otherwise, but I knew that I had to trust my professor.
"Darling." My eyes widened. My breath hitched in my throat, my heart starting to pound more harshly as I heard his voice. I looked up, a choke leaving my lips as Tom limped towards me, my boyfriend caked in rubble dust and blood.
"Tommy." I choked. He returned it as he crouched down next to me and tightly hugged me. I returned it, tears streaming down my face again as we held onto each other for dear life.
"I was so scared that I'd lose you. So fucking scared." he cried into my hair.
"So was I, Tommy. But we're both alive, that's the main thing." I reassured. He gulped and nodded as he pulled away, but only to lean in and gently kiss me. I returned it, our tears making the kiss slightly salty as he held my face. I broke the kiss and touched our foreheads, both of us crying and panting heavily as we just held each other.
"Guys." we looked up, another breath of relief leaving my lips as George stood there.
"Mate, thank fuck." Tom sighed as he shot up and tightly hugged George. The boy returned it, tears leaving his eyes. My eyebrows furrowed as I looked at him. Something felt wrong.
"George...where's Fred?" I gulped. Tom's eyes widened, the realisation also hitting him as he pulled away to look at our friend. I choked, my heart plummeting to my feet as George looked down.
"Do you want to see him? The entire family is there right now." he mumbled quietly. Tom looked at me, a tear leaving his eye. I bit my lip and desperately tried to stay strong for the two of them, though it wasn't working as I stood from the blanket that I had been set up on. Tom gently took my hand into his, our fingers intertwining as all three of us solemnly walked back through the rows of lost fighters. I choked, my heart being torn apart as George led us to Fred's body, the whole Weasley family crying and sobbing over their lost son and brother.
"George...I'm so sorry." I choked, Tom shaking his head and biting his lip in an attempt not to cry as he pulled me into his body.
"I just can't believe that he's gone." the boy sobbed as he knelt down beside his brother. Tom gently placed a soothing hand on his shoulder, George putting his hand over Tom's as a thanks as we just stood there and cried. My boyfriend pressed his lips to my head, tears streaming down both of our faces as I rested my head against his chest. I was never going to take for granted again listening to his gentle heartbeat when we cuddled or slept together, especially considering that that sound would never be heard from Fred again. I was so grateful that Tom and I had made it, but it broke us to the core that we had lost our best friend. The two of us stood there for the rest of the night, just holding each other and crying with George as we started to come to terms with what had happened. What we could have lost, and what we did lose.
