Forgotten birthday (Peter Parker)
Requested by AllisonWinterNight: Peter forgets Y/N's birthday and goes MIA on the day because of his patrol. She feels really sad and disappointed, but doesn't mention it to him because she doesn't want to make him feel bad. But she does tell MJ, who kicks his ass for forgetting. He feels really bad and so he plans something to make up for the fact that he forgot.
Sunlight streamed into mine and Peter's bedroom, lighting up the room in hot morning rays as my eyes fluttered open. My lips parted in a yawn, groans leaving my lips as I stretched out. My eyes opened fully, a smile curling onto my lips at what day it was. My twenty-second birthday.
"Morning, Pete." I sighed out as I rolled over to put my arm around my boyfriend's waist. But instead my limb collided with the mattress. My eyebrows furrowed and I looked around the room as I sat up.
"Peter?" I called out. My heart jumped, a smile curling back onto my lips as the realisation hit me that maybe he'd set something up in the living room. I squealed excitedly as I scrambled out of bed and rushed to the door. I opened it and rushed out into the rest of the apartment, my smile gradually dipping as it was empty.
"Pete?" I yelled again. Nothing. I scoffed and shook my head, tears pricking my eyes as I started to realise the truth of the matter. My boyfriend of two years had forgotten my birthday. Peter and I had met at CalTech two and a half years ago, when we'd started on the same degree. We'd hit it off instantly, but as the cliche always went, didn't realise that we liked each other. Until six months in, we were just friends, but then Peter took a leap of faith and asked me out. I had said yes with no hesitation, my mind and heart happy that I'd get to date my best friend. We'd been dating ever since, our relationship only growing stronger with the reveal that Peter was Spider-Man. Not that he'd had a choice, he'd asked me to move in with him and so it would become very obvious very quickly when I'd see his suit hanging up in our wardrobe. But I thought that today of all days, he wouldn't have left so early to go on his patrol. I had at least been expecting a birthday cake or some balloons. And yet there was nothing. I bit my lip, tears pricking my eyes as I grabbed my phone. I scrolled along to his number and clicked on it before holding the phone to my ear.
"Hey, it's Peter, sorry I can't come to the phone right now, I'm probably swinging over Queens. Sike! Why would I swing over Queens, I'm not Spider-Man! Anyway, leave a message and I'll get back to you when I can. Bye!" his cheery voicemail played. I rolled my eyes and hung up before typing out a message instead and pressing 'send'.
Y/N: Hey, Pete, where are you? I figured that you'd skip patrol today, or at least have a shorter one. Let me know that you're okay x.
I sighed and put my phone down as I slumped back onto the sofa. Now, all I could do was wait.
Peter's P.O.V
Peter swung over the streets of Queens, the sun setting behind him as he headed back to the apartment that he shared with his girlfriend, Y/N. He puffed out as he landed on the roof, figuring that he should check his phone. After all, he had unintentionally been on patrol for the whole day, meaning that his phone had been off all day. God knows what he had missed. He turned it back on and it immediately vibrated with a text from Y/N.
Y/N: Hey, Pete, where are you? I figured that you'd skip patrol today, or at least have a shorter one. Let me know that you're okay x.
His eyebrows furrowed as he read the text.
"Why would I have a shorter patrol than usual?" he mumbled to himself as he thought out loud. After all, it wasn't rare for him to accidentally go MIA all day, and Y/N knew that, so he wasn't sure why she had been asking where he was and when he'd be back. He shrugged to himself, figuring that the only way to find out was to go home and ask her. He put his phone back into his utilities belt before shooting a web at a nearby building and starting to head back home.
Y/N's P.O.V
I lay on my side in bed, tears streaming down my face as I waited for Peter to get home. He'd been on patrol all day, meaning that I hadn't had so much as a one-letter text from him. I had even half expected him to have planned for a flower delivery or something considering that he had accidentally made me spend my birthday alone, and yet there had been absolutely nothing. I was heartbroken. My eyes fluttered open again as I heard the window slide open behind me, implying that he was home. My suspicions were confirmed by the series of small grunts and curses that always accompanied Peter trying to climb in through the window, followed by the quiet thud of him finally getting in. I kept my back to him, my lip held tightly in between my teeth in a weak attempt to not cry more as I heard him undress before the bed dipped. He sighed out as he climbed in next to me and curled his arm around my waist.
"Hey, baby. Sorry I was gone all day, it was a busy one. How was your day?" he chuckled quietly as he leant down and kissed my cheek.
"U-um, yeah, it was okay. Didn't get up to much." I mumbled. Peter had clearly completely forgotten my birthday, and whilst I was very upset, I didn't want to make him feel guilty over it, especially as he had missed it to save people and make a difference.
"Okay, angel. Well, I'm super tired, so I'm going to sleep. I love you." he spoke, pressing one more kiss to my neck before lying back and resting his head against his pillow.
"Love you too, Pete." I whispered, more tears soaking the pillow that my head was rested on as my eyes fluttered shut and I tried to fall asleep.
I walked into the cafe, my eyes looking around for MJ as I walked in. I spotted her, a smile curling onto both of our lips as I walked towards the table that she was sitting at.
"Hey, there's the birthday girl!" She squealed, making me chuckle and shake my head as she hugged me and gave me the gift bag that she was holding.
"Thank you, MJ. At least someone remembered." I sighed as we sat back down. She looked at me.
"What do you mean?" She asked. I sighed again.
"Peter forgot my birthday." I admitted, making her eyes widen.
"WHAT?! Your own boyfriend forgot your birthday?!" She exclaimed.
"I know. I think that he's been so busy recently with Spider-Man that it just slipped his mind. He went MIA all day yesterday since he was out on patrol. Missed the whole day." I nodded.
"What did he say when you told him? I bet that he felt super bad." She scoffed. I looked at her and smiled sheepishly, making her eyes widen.
"You didn't tell him that he missed your birthday?! Girl! I missed my one-month anniversary with Jess and she's never let me live it down, you need to tell him!" She exclaimed.
"I can't, MJ. He's been so busy and stressed recently with his patrols and I didn't want to add to that by telling him that he'd missed my birthday. He'll feel awful once he knows and I can't do that to him." I sighed.
"Of course you can, he missed your birthday! What happens when in a week, he realises that it's close and he asks what you want? What are you going to do, make up a new birthday?" She scoffed.
"I'll cross that bridge when I come to it, MJ. All I know is that I can't tell him right now. Poor guy has been pulling eighteen-hour patrols and is coming home injured and exhausted each night. I'll tell him eventually but right now, he doesn't need the guilt and stress." I shook my head. She sighed and bit her lip.
"Okay. If you say so, babe." She nodded.
"I appreciate you getting me something, though, MJ. It means a lot." I smiled.
"Of course, babe. I'm just sorry that Pete forgot." She sighed.
"Yeah. So am I. But it's okay." I reassured. She sighed again and took my hand, making me give her a small smile as we continued to sit and talk.
Peter's P.O.V
Peter sat on the sofa, relaxing on his day off as he waited for Y/N to get back from her coffee date with MJ. As if on cue, the doorbell went. Peter's eyebrows furrowed, his mind filling with confusion as he knew that Y/N always used her keys. Maybe it's not her, he figured as he stood up and went to answer it. He opened the door to reveal MJ.
"MJ, hey, what are you doing here-." Before he could finish speaking, the girl harshly punched his arm, making Peter's eyes widen.
"Ow, what the fuck?!" He exclaimed as she stormed into the apartment.
"Please, you have super strength, that didn't hurt you. Also, you're an asshole." She nodded as she turned to face him. He stared at her with wide eyes. He had no idea what he'd done wrong, but he had a feeling that he was about to find out.
"Why am I an asshole?" He scoffed.
"Your girlfriend turned twenty-two yesterday, and what did you do? Went MIA for a sixteen-hour patrol." She spat. Peter looked at her in confusion.
"What are you talking about? Her birthday is on Friday, I still have three days." He stated.
"It's Saturday today, Peter. Yesterday was Friday. Yesterday was her birthday." She nodded. His eyes widened, his heart plummeting as he grabbed his phone and looked at the date. That surely enough said that it was the day after her birthday.
"Oh, fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck, MJ, I really messed up this time, shit." He groaned.
"I know that you did, you're fucking lucky that you've got such an understanding girlfriend. Y/N didn't want to say anything to you because she didn't want to make you feel bad. But you need to fix this." She nodded. He gulped and nodded as he ran a hand through his hair.
"How do I fix it? I mean, I can't go back in time, how do I make up for missing her birthday-." He stopped speaking, making MJ look at him as he narrowed his eyes.
"You've got an idea, don't you? On how to make it up to Y/N." she stated. Peter nodded and bit his lip.
"Yeah, I do. But I need your help to pull it off." he replied before starting to tell her the plan.
Y/N's P.O.V
Peter walked along the street, hand in hand as we walked to the restaurant that we'd booked for our date. It had been a week since my birthday, and Peter hadn't said anything yet implying that he knew that he'd missed it. I still felt extremely let down, but it also felt like the time to tell him had passed. And so, I just hoped now that he didn't bring it up at all.
"Baby, I need to tell you something." Peter suddenly broke the silence, making me look up at him.
"Yeah?" I asked. He sighed and gave me a sheepish smile.
"I know that your birthday was last week, and I know that I forgot." he admitted. My eyes widened and I stopped in my tracks, making him gulp and look at me.
"How?" I asked.
"MJ came by after your coffee date and gave me a very hard punch on the arm and a very stern telling off. I'm so sorry, angel." he sighed and shook his head. I returned it and gave him a small smile as I took his hands into mine.
"It's okay, Pete. This is why I didn't mention it, I didn't want you to feel bad. You've been so busy with patrols and stuff recently, I didn't want you to feel guilty for missing something so standard." I shrugged.
"It's not just standard, though. It was the birthday of the girl that I love. I should have remembered." he nodded. I bit my lip at him.
"It's okay, Pete. I forgive you, I'm not mad or upset anymore. Don't worry." I reassured.
"God, what did I do to deserve you, baby?" he sighed, making me chuckle and shake my head as I leant up and kissed him. He returned it, his hands holding my waist and pulling me closer as I held his face. He broke the kiss and looked at me.
"As much as I'd love to stand here and kiss you all day, we need to make our reservation." he chuckled, making me smile and nod as he took my hand again. We continued to walk until we got to the restaurant, my eyebrows furrowing as we walked towards it to see that the lights were out.
"Pete, are you sure that they're open? It doesn't look like anyone is in." I scoffed.
"I'm sure, baby." he nodded, making my eyebrows furrow more as he took my waist and walked me in.
"SURPRISE!" Everyone cheered as the lights turned on, making my eyes widen.
"Oh my god!" I laughed, my heart swelling in happiness as I saw the banner that read 'Happy Birthday!' as well as the cake and pile of gifts. I bit my lip and turned to face Peter.
"Let me guess, this is your way of making it up to me." I teased, making him smile sheepishly as he curled his arms around my waist again.
"Is it working?" he chuckled nervously. I bit my lip at him before playfully rolling my eyes.
"Yes. Yes it is." I nodded. He breathed a sigh of relief, making me smirk as I hugged him tightly. He returned it and buried his face into my hair before letting me go. I smiled and took his hand, making him return my smile as we went to start mingling with the guests of my party. What a way for Peter to make it up to me.
