Q. What started the feud between elves and dwarves?

A. This could take awhile so, prepare your information intake. There was a dude named Hurin whose son Turin had been fostered by Thingol, King of Doriath. Hurin's view on life in general had been twisted during the last ten or so years by Morgoth (Sauron's boss). So when Hurin looked at how Thingol had raised Turin he thought that Thingol had done horrible job when in reality Thingol had done a great job. So Hurin gets the Nauglimer (Dwarf necklace given to Finrod Felagund king of Nargothrond) and gives it to Thingol in scorn thinking that Thingol had done a rotten job. Melian (Thingol's queen) puts some sense into Hurin's mind and Hurin sees his mistake and apologizes for being a jerk and gives the Nauglimer to Thingol as thanks for taking care of his son when he couldn't. Then he goes out and dies.

Thingol gets thoughtful for awhile and then gets the bright idea to take the Silmaril he has (Beren and Luthien, check it out) and put it in the Nauglimer. He had been getting rather paranoid about it and he thought it would be a good idea to put it in the necklace so it would never have to leave him again. (Brilliant.) It would also combine the two greatest works done by elf and dwarves. I say elf and dwarves because it is my assumption that the Nauglimer was made by a few dwarves, while the Silmarils were made by one elf. It was a good idea too, until of course it wasn't.

Thingol calls a few dwarves in to do the work and when it was done it was the most beautiful thing ever made. (See what happens when you work together) Thingol has it in his mind to put on right away (It is his necklace after all) but then the dwarves are like 'Why should you have the necklace? It's dwarvish and you're an elf' To which Thingol responds with getting angry and being like 'Excuse you, you're dwarves. How dare you speak in such a way to me, Elu Thingol, King of Doriath, Lord of Beleriand! I'm not even going to pay you jerks, now get out and leave me with my precious.' (He probably didn't say 'my precious' but he was probably thinking it) So the dwarves get even madder and they kill Thingol and run away with the Nauglimer. And when they get to their HQ they make it look like they were abused and taken advantage of (treacherous swine), so most of the dwarves go and fight Doriath. I am unclear as to whether they won or not but I don't think they did. Well anyway, this has already taken way too long, but as it is a central matter in the world of Tolkien I am taking the liberty to do such thing.

So if you ever find yourself in the company of both elves and dwarves don't mention: Nauglimer, Thingol, or anything else that might reopen old wounds.

Namarie.
