Fun Fact: Mahtan's family are the only elves capable of having red hair. So the only way an elf can have red hair is to be related to Mahtan. This thought occurred to me awhile ago, How does Tauriel have red hair? She's just a Silvan elf, so how could she be related to a Noldor who never left Aman (Valinor)? There's also pretty much no way she could be related to Feanor, who married Mahtan's daughter, Nerdanel.

So essentially what I'm saying is: Tauriel's hair makes no sense. (Unless she got a pretty fantastic dye job, which I find unlikely.) My fellow Tolkien nerds will probably disagree with me on some points, but that's okay.
