Taking Over
Baylee's POV
The hallucinations were gone once Colleen stepped out of the door. Reality sunk in as I looked around the pale room, or maybe it wasn't pale, maybe my mood was just dull. I let a small chuckle escape my lips, as it was an assurance that I was still breathing, maybe I was not sane but I was alive and everything that happened wasn't some sick dream.
Insanity. That's what I was feeling, it was cold and deafening. Thoughts were swimming through my head, voices screaming at me to do something, anything... but I couldn't. It was almost as if my body was frozen in place, as if everything around me was moving yet I couldn't be moved. It's like my brain is functioning yet the body isn't responding to its signals. It was terrible yet pleasant at the same time.
You have to do something! Move, idiot! One voice screamed in my head.
No stay put, you're safe here. Another hissed.
I groaned, loudly as I began to pace around the dull room. My hands were tangled in my hair, lightly tugging out of frustration, and I rested my back against the wall, falling to the ground.
Seconds later there was a loud knock on the door, the sound echoing throughout the room. "Open up, Baylee! We have some talking to do!" A deep voice ran through the room. It was stern and threatening but it didn't cause any fear from me, instead I sighed and walked towards the door.
As I unlocked the door, a large man came through the door, looking angry.
"Why?! Why did you kill him!?" He yelled, pointing a finger at me and stepping closer, menacingly.
"Calm down, David. You and I both know that he wasn't doing the right thing! He was basically enslaving people to work for him, yes we got powers from it, but we couldn't leave the gang unless we were dead." I explained as I leaned against the wooden desk near the back wall.
David was my uncle's best "employee." He was a large man, with a built body. His face was extremely defined with protruding cheekbones and a sharp jawline. He had pitch black hair and almost black eyes, he was terrifying at a glance and he is. An ex United States marine and the power of incredible strength. The man was a powerhouse and almost indestructible during hand to hand combat.
"He was your uncle, Baylee. You wouldn't be where you are now if it wasn't for him." David continued, his voice quieter now.
I glared at him, "That man put me through hell, I trained everyday for almost my whole life to get where I am at now. What if I wanted to live a normal life!?"
David's eyes widened as my voice raised. He lightly shook his head, "Look, all of those people downstairs don't have jobs to support their families. Victor gave them that, now you can either abandon them or continue Victor's business. Your choice." With that, he walked out of the room.
I shook my head, I could leave, start my life somewhere else. I have millions now since Victor's inheritance goes to me but the people downstairs need me.
With a sigh, I walked out of the door and to the railing, looking down at the many people in the warehouse. It was silent as they stared at me with mixed emotions of hate, amazement, awe, and fear.
"As you know, Victor is dead by the hands of me. I will now be in charge since I know everything about Victor's business and how to run it. Yes, there will be changes in the system but none that will be drastic. This gang is considered family to me, let's not make things harder than they already are." I spoke loudly, voice full of authority as I darted my eyes from one person to the next.
Moments went by without a sound, until a question broke the silence.
"What are the changes going to be?" A person asked.
"First, only people who truly want to be in the gang are allowed but they have to earn the power, not just receive it. Second, everyone now has the chance to leave the gang freely, you have every right to walk out. And lastly, this gang will not be talked about outside of the gang. You will not tell anyone about the gang, it causes more problems than anything. Remember, my punishments are a lot worse than Victor's. Are we clear?" My voice echoed throughout the building as some of the gang members nodded their heads in agreement while others whispered to the people next to them.
With that, I spun on my heel and walked back into the room. I quickly picked up my phone and went through my contacts. I tapped the familiar name and pressed call, instantly the phone started ringing.
"Hello?" A voice called through the phone.
"Colleen?" I responded almost breathlessly.
"Baylee? Are you okay? What happened?" She quickly responded, voice etched with worry.
"I'm okay, I'm okay. Listen, and listen carefully, I took over the gang. I'm in charge now." I stated, not believing the words that came out of my mouth even though they were true.
"How? I know Victor is gone but wouldn't one of the higher ranked guys take over? Like David?" She asked, her voice now showing confusion.
"David was the one telling me that I should take it over." I responded, quietly.
"So what are you going to do?" Colleen asked, curiosity flowing through her raspy voice.
"That's why I called you. I wanted you to help me run it." I replied, my voice stern but it shook with nerves. There was an extended pause before she finally replied.
"You told me to leave, to run away. Now you're asking me to come back?" Her voice seemed angry as she asked but it was only her confusion showing.
"Yes. I didn't know that I was taking over the gang, I thought that I was going to run away too, it was for your safety. We both know that I can't do this by myself." I responded, the nervousness showing clearly as I spoke. There was a deep sigh before she spoke again.
"Fine. I will help you run the gang, but on one condition." She stated, causing me to smile out of joy.
"Okay, what's the condition?" I asked, curiously.
"We are equals, you aren't higher than me, we both run the place and are both the leaders of the gang. Got it?" She finalized.
"Got it." I responded, grinning widely.
"I'll be there in an hour." With that she hung up before I had a chance to respond.
