Chapter 7- Reading
I am almost finished cooking mac & cheese and chicken strips when Kai storms in the house.
"You little bit- you cook?" He starts his insult, but notices the food.
"I cook some. Why? Being sleeping beauty made you hungry?" I tease. He raises his finger to point and argue, but I stop him, "No. No man-child tantrums, raincheck for tomorrow, I am starving."
I pile the food on paper plates I got and sit at the kitchen table. He still looks mad, but makes a plate anyway. I also got us a small fridge. It feels weird to use his families so I got a new one. It doesn't seem like he moved anything in the big fridge, so I didn't want to either. I place ketchup and ranch on the table and pour a lot of ranch for my chicken.
"Eww," Kai scrunches his nose, "You dip your strips in ranch?"
"Yes I do," I state proudly, "Try it," I hand him the bottle.
He does so and seems to like it. It was odd, we actually got along when we weren't bickering. I am sure we will argue a lot though, but tonight we just act like we've known each other forever. It is strangely peaceful. I finish before him, so I go upstairs.
I hop in my new bed and look for a book to read. I decide "Wuthering Heights". Honestly, I have read all of my books already, but what else can you do here? Interact with the Kai or reread. I chose the latter. After 3 chapters in, I take a break.
I go to the dresser and find a picture. It is not in a frame. It is Kai, some girl that looks a lot like him, and two little kids that look alike too. It must be his family. They look happy. Kai and his older sister are wearing red christmas sweaters and the little ones are wearing blue ones. They're holding a wreath and a little christmas tree. He is smiling, it looks like a true smile, and his dimples were showing. God, he is actually so cute in this picture.
I reach out to touch it, but I'm interrupted by a voice, "What're doing?" Kai asks harshly.
I slide the picture off the dresser, so he doesn't know what I was looking at.
"Just reading," I shake the book that I'm holding.
He walks over to me and looks down at my hand. He raises it up, grazing it in between my legs slowly, and my hand drops once he takes it. He keeps eye contact with me the whole time before glancing at the dresser before back to the book. You could cut the tension in the room with a knife, Kai's knife to be exact, haha.
Finally the silence is broken, "Why," He scoff-laughs, "Reading is dumb."
I take the book back and our fingers barely brush together, causing an electrical shock feeling, which make us both jolt back some, and the book to fall. We both bend down to get the book at the same time. We pause when we see the other one doing the same.
"I like reading," I defend, "It shows me how actual people are supposed to act and feel," I admit quieter, "Reading takes you somewhere else."
Reading always made me feel safe growing up. I imagine the book instead of my sucky life. It has so much emotion on just one page. I was scared when I was younger, maybe even know, that the only feelings I feel are anger, lust, satisfaction. Just typical sociopathic emotions. That is another reason I like to read. It shows me all emotions, even if is all fiction. Makes me feel less crazy.
"Hmmm. I never had time for that. Reading seems horrible," He cringes.
"Well, we will just have to change that, won't we?" I declare, smirking. I am trying to be civil.
"We can hit each other with them," He suggests.
I roll my eyes, "Goodnight Kai."
He goes to the door, but turns back, "Goodnight." I throw my book at him, he catches it, and throw it back. I let it hit my arm.
Once he left, I shut my door because he didn't, men. I walk back over to the dresser and pick up the photo. I am not really sure why I like it so much. Maybe because it centers around Christmas? Maybe because it was one of a family? Maybe because of how innocent and adorable Kai was? I DON'T KNOW! I take it over to my bed and put it under my pillow. Then I drift off to sleep.
