Paisley
As soon as I stepped into the room where the children were gathered, I saw that it was absolute and utter chaos.
Kids were yelling and screaming and crying and laughing. I stood in the doorway to gather my senses for a minute before shutting the door and calmly walking to the front of the large room.
I took a seat in the chair that was already set up for the storyteller. I had gained the attention of one or two kids who were watching me closely. I beckoned to the smaller of the two; a little boy that I assumed was a cancer patient from his lack of hair. He was very short and had an Asian look to him.
He cautiously wove his way through the mob until he was right in front of me.
I leaned down so he could hear me above the rest of the room and asked, "Could you complete a really important mission for me?" He seemed like a spy kinda boy.
The boy, who couldn't have been more than 6 six looked up at me with wide eyes and nodded somemly.
"I need you to pick out the very best book for me to read. Then you must bring it here safely. Do you think you can do it?" He straightened and nodded, turning on his heel with a purpose and making his way to the bookshelf on the wall. Definitely the spy kinda boy.
I smiled. Kids were so adorible. Some people thought they were bad and didn't listen. The truth is, you just have to know how to talk to them.
The little boy got back from his 'mission' and handed me a picture book. I looked at the title. No Laughing, No Smiling, No Giggling. Sounds like just the kind of book to read in a hospital.
I smiled and leaned down. "What's your name?"
The boy looked up and stared at me with wide eyes from under his lashes. "My name is Mikey. M-i-k-e-y."
I laughed at Mikey's explanation of how to spell his name. "Alright then Mikey. Why don't you sit right in front of me so you can have the best view." He nodded and sat right in front of me.
As I began to read, the other children in the room were slowly beginning to notice, and as they did, they sat where Mikey was on the floor and listened to me read.
"Welcome to this book! My name is Freddy Fafnaffer..."
-Time Skip-
After I finished reading the book, I still had some time before I had to go back to my room. The little kids were being corralled back into their own rooms by adults.
Before I left, I found Mikey and gave him a hug. "I'll be back to see you, okay, Mikey? I had a lot of fun."
Mikey smiled and picked at the hem of his Star Wars shirt. He said in a low voice back to me, "Yep. Don't tell anyone else, but you're my favorite story teller."
I ruffled his hair and beamed. "Thank you. I'll come down here and read again as soon as I can." Mikey nodded and was called into him room by a nurse. Before he shut the door, he looked back and waved.
I waved back and then sighed, turning from the room. I walked through the blank white hospital halls.
And now I get to meet my new doctor. This was going to be fun.
