CHAPTER  SIX: Ariel

"Hurry! After them!" The gaurd's yelled as they chased after the two siblings.

Eros and Snow had been running through the forest, trying to outrun and then hide from the Queen's guards. They momentarily paused, but immediately rushed when hearing the guards yell.

"Stop!"

There was a small dip in the ground, the two slid down in before immediately running. They ran all the way to end up at a cliff. Snow tilted her head, looking down at the water below. "Really?"

"You've got to fucking with me," Eros ran a hand down his face. "Can we ever catch a break?"

"You're a long way from home, Snow, Eros White," the gaurd says. "Did you really think you could hide from the Queen here?"

"Well, not for long, obviously, just, longer than this," Eros tells.

"Actually, yes." Snow says at the same time.

The guards unsheathe their swords. "Well, don't worry. We're here to take you back. The queen is eager to see you again."

"Not gonna happen." Snow turned around, a hand reaching out for Eros.

Eros grasped his sisters hands in his, before the two jumped.  They heard the gaurd's yell, and their footsteps before the two hit the water. Snow was immediately knocked unconscious. Eros began to swim downwards to get his sister. But, another figure beat him to it.

Eros stared in disbelief, seeing the red-haired woman, who had a tail.

"Thank you." Snow says.

"No problem. You might wanna try diving in calmer waters next time." The girl says.

Snow White looks down at the water and notices the woman has a tail. "You're a..."

"Yeah. I'm a mermaid. Name's Ariel."

They all either stood or sat around, Regina was trying to teach Emma how to use her magic. So far, she was unsuccessful.

"Focus. Concentrate." Regina tells Emma.

"It's kind of hard when you're talking in my ear." Emma replied back.

"And when the wind blows or it's raining, or... someone's shooting arrows at you. Yes, concentration's hard. That's the point. Find your anger and use it to focus."

"No. There has to be a way without going dark." Emma denied.

"You're such a pathetic waste of ability."

"And you're a monster." Emma snapped back, unknowingly setting the fire.

"...Smell that?" Regina tilts her head.

"What?" Emma asked in anger.

Regina smiled. "Smoke."

Emma looks at the campfire, which has a s all flame.

"This is a bad idea." David sighs.

"She has it in her. She should learn to use it. We just have to trust her," Mary had held his arm.

"Yeah, it's not Emma I don't trust."

Hook enters, walking over to the three. "We need to talk."

Alister crouched down. "Pan paid me a visit. He, uh... He told me that Neal is alive, that he's on this very island."

"Emma saw him. He was shot. He fell through a portal. No one could survive that." Mary says.

"Well, he did, and now he's here. He said he took him from this very camp while we were off in his cave."

"According to Pan, if he's telling the truth."  Mary says.

"And, uh, why would he tell you? What does he hope to gain?"  David asked.

"Who knows why he does anything?" Alister asked. "He has his reasons, but it's a sure bet they're not good ones."

"He's telling the truth." Mary quickly gets up. "Tracks... and a scuffle. Someone was here while we were gone. We have to tell her."

"No, no, no. She already lost Neal once. And if this is a game, we can't put her through losing him again."  David says

"He's right. Either way, telling her is what Pan wants, which is why we shouldn't do it." Alister spoke.

"If Pan is as manipulating as you say," Jason says. "The better way to manipulate us is telling the truth. Emma will let her guard down thinking Neal is alive. Especially with this," he gestured to broken branches, the clear indication that someone was dragged through the dirt. 

"You want to find him without letting her know?" Mary asked in disbelief.

"Why hurt her unnecessarily?" Alister asked.

"I've never lied to her before." Mary says.

"Well, we never really had the time to lie to her," Jason says.

"Now's not the time for jokes."

"You're not lying. You're just keeping a secret until confirmation." Hook tells Mary.

"Secrets always seem to keep us from the people we really care about."

"And sometimes secrets protect the people we love." David says, as if he knows something.

"What on earth would possess you to jump like that?" Ariel asked Snow and Eros.

"You ever been chased by an evil queen?" Snow asked.

"I can't say that I have."

"Makes you do crazy things." Eros tried to ring the water out from his jacket.

"Well, that I know."

"Are you on the run from someone?" Eros asked.

"More like on the run to someone."

Snow White smiled. "What's his name? Come on. The one thing that makes everyone crazy is love."

"Eric. He's a prince in this kingdom." Ariel smiled.

"So wait. He... Lives on land? He's human?"

"Okay. Here's the thing. About a year ago, his ship wrecked, and I rescued him. I do that. He was unconscious. We never spoke, but... When I looked at his face, I just... I knew."

"Love at first sight." Snow says.

Ariel momentarily puts her head down. "It sounds dumb. I know."

"No. It doesn't sound dumb at all." Eros tells her.

When Ariel empties her bag, which surprises Snow. "Interesting."

"I collect things... And I found this." Ariel shows the siblings  a piece of paper. "There's a ball at his castle tonight... the annual under the sea celebration honoring the sea goddess Ursula... And I was hoping to meet him there."

"How are you planning on doing that? With a tail?"

Ariel took a breath, before she pulled herself farther into land. She flaps her tail over the rocks. And immediately, her tail becomes legs. She stands up, smiling. She chuckled.

"How did you do that?" Snow asked.

"You really know nothing of your mermaid mythology, do you?" Ariel says, struggling to walk.

"Uh, probably about as much as you know about people mythology, I think." Snow remarked.

Eros had stood up, grasping Ariel's arms Nelson her be steed on the rock.

"Good point. Well, anyway, every year at the highest tide, the legend says that the sea goddess Ursula grants our kind with the ability to walk on dry land until the next high tide." Ariel says.

"Which is when?" Snow asked.

"Twelve hours. Enough time for dinner and dancing and..." she is interrupted by Snow.

"Twelve hours? Why don't you ask this Ursula for a little more time?"

"Well, no one's seen her in a thousand years. She's a bit of a myth." Ariel informed.

"Ah," Eros tilts his head, understandment.

"Well, myth or no myth, you saved my life. The least I can do is help you find the love of yours." Snow says.

"Thank you. But can you keep a secret?"

The two siblings hummed in agreement.

"I'm a mermaid." Ariel says.

Eros laughed, his lips curling into a playful smile. He nodded. "Yeah. We got that."

"But Eric doesn't know that. So... Can we just maybe... Keep that under the sea for now?" Ariel asked.

"For now? Yeah, easy." Eros smiled. "Whatever you want."

"Isn't that something he eventually needs to find out?" Snow asked.

"Just let him fall for me first, okay?" Ariel asked.

"Okay. Your secret's safe with us," Snow says

"If we're gonna hide this, we need a good cover story," Mary says, as they begin to pack.

"Done," David says, clearly already thought of an excuse.
"That's no problem." Hook spoke.

"Where you guys going?" Emma asked, as she walked up to them.

"Firewood," Hook says.
"To get water." David spoke at the same time.

Emma eyed them, clearly not believing them. "Guys, what's going on?"

Jason shook his head. "They are idiots." He says and both Hook and David look offended. "Hook and Alister are getting firewood. Mary and David are getting water. And I'm going to find something else to turn into a weapon. Thought of getting dream-shade and dipping my arrow in it. Or, wrapping them in it."

He pulled a puzzled look. "How do the lost boys poison their spears and arrows?"

Except, apparently, Jason's (what he believed to be) reasonable and sensible explanation, was water when Mary spoke, seeming to blurt out the words before anyone could stop her. "Neal's alive."

Emma's face shifted, looking to Alister with uncertainty. "Neal i... is... Alive?"

"Maybe," Mary glanced at her husband, the Jones brothers and her own brother. "Sorry, she deserved to know."

"This is a waste of time. He's toying with us," Regina says, once everything was explained.

"I don't think so. Look. More scuffling. Someone was definitely resisting," Mary says

"How do we know that means Neal?" Emma asked.

"Well, then someone was fighting for his life." Mary replied.

Jason crossed his arms. "I hate to say this. But that could easily be a set up. The lost boys could have agreed to drag one of them and struggle. And make it appear like there was an actual one."

"Jason?" Mary questioned as if her he hasn't agreed with her.

"Mary-" he begins.

"Are you really going to fall for this? Fine. You wanna follow the Evil Munchkin's dirt road? Be my guest." Regina snapped, before she begins to walk off.

"Wait. Where are you going?" Emma quickly asked

"To save our son."

"We need to stick together."

Regina laughs. "No, we don't. You may be prepared to risk Henry's life over some heartbroken fool's errand, but I'm not. I'm tired of waiting around." Regina glared at them all before she left.

"What if she's right? Pan could be lying." Emma asked.

"Just because it seems too good to be true doesn't mean it is. Don't give up. You owe it to Henry to find out if his father's still alive, and you owe it to yourself."

Eros and Snow walked along side Ariel, all had gotten dressed up for the event.  The had gone to Prince Eric's palace.

"Wow! It's even better than I imagined." Ariel says, before the begin to descend down the stairs. "Do I look okay? Is this how people dress?"

"You look fantastic," Snow smiled.

"And anyone who says otherwise is either blind or jealous," Eros tells her with a smile.

"Does it fit right? Because it just feels a little..." Ariel says nervously.

"Tight? That's a corset. It's supposed to be." Snow explained.

"So, glad I never have to wear those," Eros smiled, jokingly to try and calm Ariel down.

Ariel laughed. "How do you know all these things?"

"In another life, I was a princess." Snow answered.

"Well, perhaps you'll be one again."

"I doubt it. But tonight, you can be."

Ariel laughs softly.  As they wall over to the ya me that was covered in desserts,  Snow picks up a fork. "Remember what we taught you." She shows Ariel the fork. "What's this?"

"Mini-trident. ...Salad-trident?" Ariel asked.

"Fork. Salad fork." Snow informed.

Ariel pockets the fork.

"Oh. It's really not that valuable." Snow says
"And, you definitely don't want to steal from royalty. Depending who it is, they'll have you-" Eros begins.

Snow elbowed him before he could say 'killed'.

"There. Look." Snow practically jumps. "Is that him?"

At the stairs, the very top, stood a prince.

Ariel laughs. "Yes. That's him. He's just as I remembered. Less wet... But more handsome."

They meet eyes and smile at each other. The man takes a step forward.

"Go to him," Snow says.

"Just... walk over there?" Ariel asked, nervously.

"Love at first sight doesn't need much prompting," snow pushes Ariel forward, gently.

Ariel walks over toward Prince Eric but trips over her own feet. Still, Eric approaches her. He extends a hand to her. "Would you like to dance? Might be easier than walking."

Ariel laughs nervously. As she takes his hand she looks around. "'No one's dancing."

"Well, that's one of the perks of being the prince. If I want to dance," He holds out his hand. "I can," He nods to the musicians and music starts to play. "I'm Eric."

"Ariel."

Eros and Snow stood by, but as Ariel and him headed towards the middle of the floor. They began to dance, but, they were no longer able to hear the two.

Towards the end, Eric bowed, before walking away. Ariel quickly headed towards the twins.

They all continue to walk through the plants, Emma, Mary and Jason were a few steps ahead of the others.

"I kissed him." Emma suddenly says.

"What? Who?" Mary asked.

"Alister. I kissed Alister," Emma repeated.

"You what?" Jason asked, gapping momentarily.

"Oh! Well... Why?" Mary asked.

"I... I don't know. I... I was... It's been a while. I was feeling good. I don't know." Emma tried to explain.

"Did it mean anything?" Jason asked, he doesn't say that he kissed Hook.

"It... it was just a kiss." Emma says

"I'm sure Neal will understand."

"If he's still alive."

"Emma, I get what you're doing, you know. You don't want to open yourself up to the hope that he's alive, but you should."

Emma stops walking. "Why?"

Mary Margaret turned to her daughter. "Because you deserve a happy ending, Emma. And happy endings always start with hope."

Ariel, Snow and Jason all sat on a bench.

"This was a terrible, terrible mistake," Ariel held them.

"You met him. It's a start." Snow says

"More like an end. I can't ask him to give up his dream for someone he just met," Ariel's explained.

"Maybe you're the dream." Eros spoke.

"Maybe. But I can't make him choose. It's not right."

"You can't make him choose? Or you don't want to make him choose? You're afraid." Snow says.

"Of what?" Ariel asked.

"Of his choice."

"There is nothing about any of this... that's easy."

"So take my advice. Do the hard thing. Be honest. No secrets. Open your heart to love. It is so worth the risk, even if you get hurt. Then you'll know... you'll know you tried," Snow advices.

"I just need some time to think."

"Well, you have three hours. So we'll be here if you need me." Snow says.

Ariel walks away.

"Where is she?" Eros asked, now growing nervous. The girl, Ariel was kind, and he found himself worrying about her. The way she believed in true love. The way she helped both him and Snow. And the way he trusted them with her secret of her a, being a mermaid. And b, being able to have legs. He didn't want for her to meet the wrong person. Who would take advantage of how kind she was.

They had gone to the docks, waiting for Ariel. When they heard footsteps, they quickly turned, seeing Ariel with a bright smile as she rushed over to them.

"What is it? What happened?" Snow quickly stood up.

"Something amazing. And not just for me, but for the both of us." Ariel replied.

"What are you talking about?" Eros asked in slight confusion

"I received a gift... a gift that will allow me to spend the rest of my life with Eric, and a way for you to escape your evil queen."

"How is that possible?" Snow asked.

"Look." Ariel pull out two bracelets and puts it on Snow White's wrist. Before clamping on onto Eros's wrist.

"What are you doing?" The Sicilian let her, passing she had found it, and it was one of her many, many collected items.

"This is no ordinary bracelet." Ariel smiled.

A dark green smoke forms around Snow White's legs.

"Snow?" Eros asked moving but being forced to stop as he suddenly fell back. He looked up seeing he and Snow had tails.

"You're a mermaid." Ariel smiled. "Both of you. You're a mermaid. And you're a merman."

"Ariel... What have you done?" Snow softy asked, flipping her tail.

"The bracelet is magic. I got it from Ursula. By wearing it, you get my tail, and I can keep my legs. That's the price, but it's a good price. Don't you see? You can escape. You can travel to my land... a land where the evil queen cannot follow. And you can have a life, a wonderful life, under the sea."

"Ursula gave you the bracelet?" Eros asked, disbelief, as he struggled to move.

"Yes." Ariel confirmed.

"Ursula is a myth. She hasn't existed for thousands of years. She's not real." Snow panicked for explain.

"Yes, she is." Ariel smiled.

"Actually... It's not entirely true." An all too familiar voice called. Which caused for both Snow and Eros to grow more panicked.

Eros tried to move, tried to reach for a weapon. But, was unable to move with the new, replaced limb.

Ariel looked back at her, then the twins, confused. "What's going on?"

"Well, well, well. Look at the catch of the day."

"Ursula?" Ariel had gotten up, standing by who she believed was the goddess of hers.

"No, this isn't Ursula. This is Regina, the Evil Queen," Snow informed.

They had made it to a cave, following Mary and Jason's advance.

"The tracks lead directly into that cave. This must be where Pan is keeping Neal,"   Mary announced.

"If the cave is some sort of prison, why aren't there any guards posted to stop us?" David questioned.

"Because this prison doesn't require guards. Echo cave," hook says.

"You know it?" Jason asked, curiously. He tilted his head to the side.

"All too well. I lost half my crew inside those rock walls. The only way to rescue someone from inside is to reveal a secret." Hook speaks.

"A secret? That's all?" Mary questions.

"Your darkest secret. Echo cave derives its name from an old saying... "the deeper the lie, the more truth in its echo." The cave demands that you reveal a truth about yourself. A secret you would never admit to anyone."   Hook informed.

Fuck,  Jason thought. "This is ridiculous."

"Don't kill the messenger, luv."

"Even if we spill our guts, how do we know Neal's still alive in there?" Emma asked.

"Because this is what Pan wants. He wants us to rescue him." Alister answered.

"Why?" David asked.

"So that we reveal our secrets. He believes once we do, our secrets will destroy us."

"Having trouble with your fin?" Regina laughed.

"I'll figure it out!"  Snow snapped.

"Snow, Eros the bracelet," Ariel whispered.

Which lead for the twins to try and remove the bracelet.  But, it wouldn't come off.

"The wearer can't take it off. Oh. Did I leave that detail out? For once, Snow, Eros you won't be able to run away," Regina says.

"You tricked me?" Ariel asked.

"You went to a long-dead octopus for advice, and you're going to blame me for your problems?" Regina sarcastically replied

"This is wrong."  Ariel moved to help.

"Unh-unh-unh. Sorry, dear. You're not helping them," Regina held up her hand.

"Ariel, get out of here." Eros grounded out, glaring at Regina.

"For once we're in agreement. Get out of here, mermaid!"

"Not if you're gonna hurt my friends," Ariel  says

"You have a choice. Your friend's going to be hurt either way. The real question is whether you're going to join them. Or are you going to run off and get your happy ending? Hmm? Go on. There are no second chances."

"It's okay, Ariel. I can't keep running forever. You have a chance at happiness. That's something the queen will never have. Eric is going to leave any moment. Go to him." Snow says. And then turns to Regina, going to beg, like every single encounter they had, for her brothers life.

"Listen to her, Ariel! Are you really going to give up the love of your life...? For a friend?"

"I'm sorry." Ariel walks away.

"Now... Where were we?" Regina asked

"Please. Leave Eros alone. He didn't tell Cora I did," Snow says, like every single time.

"I told Cora." Eros speaks. "I told Cora because I thought she was a terrible mother. I told her-"

"No! I did! I told Cora! She was acting like she just wanted to make sure you were okay!" Snow interrupted.

"That if her daughter couldn't tell her how she truly felt, she was a terrible mother. That she deserved for you to leave her so-"

"Eros stop it! Stop lying!" Snow cries.

"She's alone. And you find the very thing she despises for you to find because she couldn't have it herself." Eros continues. And he sees how both Snow and his words make Regina angry. The veins in her forehead practically popping out as her eyes turn cold, filled with hatred and anger.

Regina lifts she hands, using her magic on both siblings. Both Eros and Snow gasps for air, unable to breathe. When Ariel runs up and stabs the Evil Queen in the neck with the fork. Regina cries out in pain, and Ariel runs up to Snow White, takes the bracelet off, and throws it into the ocean. She quickly removed Eros's bracelet as her tails grew back.

"What are you doing?" Snow asked.

"Hold your breath," Ariel grabs a hold of the siblings. She dives into the water, and they swim away.

Once they entered the caves they immediately noticed the make-shift cage. But, there was large distance between the two. The large piece of rock that they stood at, and the smaller piece that the cage had been placed on.

"Emma!" Neal's voice sounds out.

Emma takes a step back, surprised. "Neal."

"It must be a hundred feet across." Mary shakes her head.

David examined the distance. "Even if we fashioned some sort of rope, there's nothing to attach it to. No way to swing over."

"So what do we do?" Emma asked.

"I told you what needs to be done. Consider this the moment of truth, literally. Now... who wants to kick things off?" Hook asked.

"So, what? Someone tells their secret and they sprout wings?" Emma sarcastically asks.

"I don't know the particulars, only what I've been told." Alister answered

"Well, how do you know it'll work?"

Alister  takes a deep breath and turns to face Neal. "There's only one way to find out, I suppose. I kissed Emma."

Emma rolls her eyes.

"You did what?" David asked.

"David, now is not the time." Mary speaks.

"I already told Mary Margaret, and Jason so technically it's not a secret. But it was just a kiss. How's that your darkest secret?"

Alister took a step to the side, awkward. "Because  I had promised to myself that I would never care for someone else. Because they could be put in danger.   And I never did care for anyone else. Until you."

The ground shook, as storms side my came up, they up again the rock they stood on.

Jason scratched the back of his neck,'unsure. Really whatever secrets he kept, someone knew. Either David or Mary knew.  Well, they knew all but-

"I kissed Jason," Killian speaks.

"What?" Practically everyone yelled.

"Jason!" Mary yelled, "how could you not tell me?"

"Okay! To be fair, I was distracted by the fact that Alister apparently kissed Emma!"  Jason' spoke.  He furrowed his brows in realization. "Once again, how can a kiss being your darkest secret?"

"It's what the kiss exposed." Hook began.

"Of course it is," Emma rubbed her forehead

"My secret is, I never thought I'd be capable of letting go of my first love... of my Milah... to believe that I could find someone else that is, until I met you."

The ground quakes and a large chunk of rock grows from the floor, forming a partial bridge to reach the part of the cave where Neal is.

"Uh... Mary Margaret..." David turns to his wife.

"No, no, no. Me next. Ever since the curse broke, since we found each other, since we found Emma... And all of that happiness, there is something I haven't wanted to admit. Our daughter is a beautiful, smart, amazing woman whom I love very much, and of whom I could not be more proud. But she's all grown up. And... As much as I wanna pretend I'm okay with that, I'm not. We missed it, David. What we have with her is unique, but it's not what I wanted. We were cheated out of everything... her first step, her first word, her first smile. We missed it all." Mary ranted.

"What are you saying?" David asked.

"When we get off this island and get back to Storybrooke, I want another go at it. I wanna have another baby."

The ground quakes and the bridge extends.

"Nothing in this world would make me happier, and I know with all my heart that you would make... An amazing mother. But it can never happen... At least not with me." David speaks in a soft tone.

"What do you mean?" Mary asked.

"When Hook, Alister, and I went to search for the sextant, he was really taking me to find a cure."

"A cure for what?"

"Dreamshade."

"The lost boys, the arrow... you pushed me out of the way–"

"–I wasn't fast enough. I was hit. Hook was able to find a cure, but it comes at a price. I can't leave Neverland. If I do, I'll die."

The bridge is almost completed, only a section belong left. Jason turns his head to Emma, unsure if it was him or her. He didn't realize have any dark secrets. Only one. And he don't think it was dark, or a secret he would be unwilling to admit. Not for the same reasons as the others, at least.

"Damn it," Jason dragged a hand down his face. "Everyone's got to admit a secret? It's not even a bad secret." He huffed.

Emma seemed worried, that she would have to say her secret.

"I snuck into Regina's place to kill her," Jason admitted.

"What? When?" Mary's head snapped towards her brother.

"You and David were away. I took the chance to kill her. But, I wasn't able to get her. I killed two of her gaurd's and knocked out another three." He admitted. "Where I bumped into Graham. And saw her room of hearts. I wanted to find hers and crush it."

The rest of the stone path began to be build.

Emma unsheathes her sword and carefully walks across. Half-way across, when she's sure it's sturdy, she runs the rest of the way and bends down to face Neal. "You okay?"

"You did what?" Both Mary and David questioned.

"It's not a big deal. Look, I was only stabbed once-"

"You were stabbed!"

"Okay, well, Graham caught me off guard, and another guard- okay, how about we talk about this when we aren't on an island filled with homicidal technically-not- teenager boys, teenager, yeah?"

So, they turned their the into where Emma was speaking to Neal.

"I... I didn't know if I could go through it again. I love you. I probably always will. But my secret... Is that I was hoping that this was a trick. I was hoping you were dead...
