48 | Connor

"So I think we may have some people waiting to know how this all went." I laughed, scrolling through my phone. "Do you think we should go and tell them?"

Sydney looked up from gazing at the rock on her left hand and smiled at me. We had spent the afternoon hanging out and reminiscing about the past, so the evening was certainly going to be reserved for friends.

"I think that if we don't, we probably won't have friends anymore." She laughed, jumping up from off the couch and pulling on her coat, "Let's go."

I grabbed my jacket and keys to the apartment and followed Syd out the door, shaking my head slightly at her. If there was one thing Syd didn't do, it was wait around to dwell on anything that ever happened. It definitely kept me on my toes at all times.

The best thing about my girlfriend--or, rather, my new fiancee--was that she was absolutely someone who made me a better person. She was the only one in the world that I wanted in my life, because she made me want to be better, for her. There was nothing else I wanted more than her happiness, and attempting to give her that happiness made me into the man I wanted to be.

It didn't take long to get to Katie and Mel's apartment, where I saw Dan's car parked outside--meaning that he and Britt were also there.

Sydney knocked on the door and we waited approximately three seconds before it swung open, revealing Katie's excited face on the other side.

"So?"

Sydney held up her left hand, the ring sparkling on her finger.

"They did it!" Katie shouted, opening the door all the way to reveal everyone waiting inside with champagne and some sort of dessert I couldn't quite see. "Come in, come in! Holy crap, you finally popped the question Hall."

"Hey, I had to make sure the time was right." I rolled my eyes as we stepped inside and took off our jackets, "What's the point of getting engaged without a good story?"

"You mean like forcing me to hike up a giant hill so he could propose on the top when I was sweating and dying?" Britt asked, popping open a bottle and spilling it everywhere, "Yeah, what's the point in that?"

"I'm sorry, babe. I didn't realize how much you hated hiking." Dan grinned.

"I tell you every day now."

"I know."

"Well, all I'm saying is that I'm glad Syd isn't as much of a romantic as you, Connor." Mel laughed, "I don't think we could handle having two of you in the same relationship."

"Hey, I'm a romantic!" Syd argued, taking a glass from Britt and immediately making a face at the sticky sides, "I can be totally romantic."

"Yeah, like the time that you told the man about to propose to you that you wanted to take things slow?" Katie winked, "When was that again? A few hours ago?"

Sydney rolled her eyes as she walked up to me and wrapped her arms around my waist, blushing.

"I didn't realize what was going on, Katie. Cut me some slack."

"I will forever give you a hard time about the fact that you didn't know your boyfriend of four years was proposing to you!" Katie shook her head, "And I thought I was dense."

"Didn't you promise Jen that you would text her and Riley when this happened?" Mel reminded her roommate, "Go do it and stop annoying the newly-engaged."

Katie smacked Mel on the arm good-naturedly before running off to grab her phone and let Sydney's best friend and cousin know about the engagement.

"So, any ideas of when it'll be?" Dan asked, "Summer wedding? Winter wedding? Spring? Fall?"

"Can you tell that he's ready to set a date for us?" Britt rolled her eyes, "We just finished our engagement party and he's already looking to book the real thing."

"We have a party to think about before we even think about a wedding." I laughed, "But I'm sure it'll be sooner rather than later."

"As long as it's not close to Britt and Dan's." Katie said as she came out of her room, putting her phone back on the counter. "I don't want to have to deal with two bridezillas in one month or something."

Sydney smacked her on the arm as she walked past, rolling her eyes.

"I will not be a bridezilla." She promised me, standing on her toes to give me a kiss. "Just don't get cold feet at the last second or anything like that."

I wrapped my arm around her waist and pulled her closer, shaking my head.

"When are you going to get it, Porter? I'm in it for the long haul." I kissed the top of her head, reveling in the fact that Sydney Porter was going to be mine forever. "Speaking of Porter, what are you thinking about last names?"

Sydney cocked her head to the side, thinking for a moment. She had never been one for the completely traditional, so whatever she wanted would be what we did.

"I think I'd like to be a Hall." She replied, taking a sip of her champagne, "If your family will have another one."

I couldn't keep the giant smile off of my face at hearing those words.

"I don't think they could possibly ask for a better addition to the family."

"Alright, enough with the sap." Katie rolled her eyes as she poured herself another glass, "Let's get some drinking games going before I drink this entire bottle by myself."

"Are you going to be alright?" I asked Syd as we walked up to the airport security, where I knew I would have to drop her off for the next few months, "With the apartment and orchestra situations?"

Sydney nodded.

"I'll be fine. I still have my lease on the apartment with Justin and Lucy and Adrian, so if I'm completely desperate, I can always force my way back in for a place to sleep at night. And as for the orchestra..." She shook her head, laughing slightly. "Amy Summa is going to have a lot of explaining to do."

"I would hope so." I laughed, leaning down to give her the bag I had been carrying, "I'm going to miss you, Syd. I know it's just a few months, but still...it's going to be rough."

"We can do it." Syd promised, "I know we can. Also, make sure Katie isn't too hungover this morning, alright? I didn't even see her before I left."

"I'll check up on her." I promised. "I love you."

"I love you, too." Sydney replied, leaning up to give me a final kiss before she left. "Also, I was thinking...what do you think about a June wedding?"

"June?" I couldn't help the surprise in my voice, "That's only six months away."

Sydney shrugged, backing away from me and into the security line.

"I just figured...when you've got something as special as this, what's the point in waiting?"

In all honesty, I had never heard a more valid point in my life.
