Chapter Three
It had been another six months, Luke and Courtney were in the process of adopting Elizabeth, and they were all happy. Well, mostly. Elizabeth sat at the table, watching Luke. He was on the phone in the kitchen, pacing and talking with Kellie. Then, she obviously said something that ticked him off, because he nearly punched the refrigerator.
"What? You're joking. Why? No I- No! No, I know you're lying about that. It's not true, and you know it! What?! Well, then why are you?!" He clenched his teeth, fighting tears, and looked at her.
"We were working on the papers, and you're just now-" Kellie cut him off again, and now Elizabeth was fighting tears. He sighed in defeat, sitting.
"Fine. But this isn't over. You're not going to be able to keep her out of our family." He nearly punched the end call button, and almost broke the phone on the table. Courtney came in the room, her eyes wide.
"Luke?" He sat down, her head in his hands, and mumbled something. She sat beside him.
"What?" Elizabeth nearly lost it when she heard what he said next.
"Kellie's taking her back." Courtney stared at her husband, shocked.
"What? Why?! She...she can't do that, can she?" Luke nodded sadly, and Elizabeth shot up, running out to the back porch. Luke slowly followed, but as he got to the door, he heard her speaking quietly.
"God....I know you're here. I know your real. I know you see me. But God, I don't understand this right now. So....I'd you want it to happen, please, stop Kellie. Please let me stay here." Luke got ready to say something, but then she started singing.
I'm so confused
I know I heard you, loud and clear
So I followed through
Somehow I ended up here
I don't wanna think, I may never understand
That my broken heart is a part of your plan
When I try to pray, all I've got is hurt
And these four words
Thy will be done
Thy will be done
Thy Will be done
I know you're good
But this don't feel good right now
I know you think of things I could never think about
It's hard to count it all joy
Distracted by the noise, just trying to make sense
Of all your promises
Sometimes I've gotta stop, remember that you're God
And I am not
Thy will be done
Thy will be done
Thy will be done
Like a child on my knees, all that comes to me is
Thy will be done
Thy will be done
Thy will
I know you see me
I know you hear me, Lord
Your plans are for me
Goodness you have in store
I know you hear me
I know you see me, Lord
Your plans are for me
Goodness you have in store, so
Thy will be done
Thy will be done
Thy will be done
Like a child on my knees, all that comes to me is
Thy will be done
Thy will be done
Thy will be done
I know you see me
I know you hear me, Lord.
He smiled, moving forward and placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. She leaned back, and he wrapped his arms around her.
"I have to believe God knows what he's doing." She whispered.
"Otherwise......I go back to the bitter, angry, depressed girl I used to be." Then, she turned to him, burying her face in his jacket.
"I don't wanna go back with her." He pulled her close, and they both simply stood there, both with tears streaming down their cheeks. After a couple minutes, he knelt down so she could look at him. He gently placed two fingers under her chin, pushing it up so he could see her blue, tear-filled eyes.
"Hey. She's not going to win. We are not just going to let you go, and try again with another girl. You are a Smallbone, Elizabeth. And we don't ever give up on each other, no matter what. She won't win." Elizabeth managed a shaky smile, and then wrapped her arms around his neck.
"I love you......dad." He nearly couldn't believe his ears. She had called him her dad.
"I love you too, baby girl." No, Kellie would not win. And they would do what they had to so that she wouldn't go back. If Elizabeth had resorted to sleeping under a bridge, in a short sleeved shirt, in November, there was something awful about Kellie. They just didn't know what it was yet.
