Chapter 1: Hollow Faces
"Alright you miserable maggot, have you just joined to become Titan food! Because with your size and stature that's all you will ever be! You are being trained to defeat titans not feed them!" Keith Shadis screamed a young cadet, his saliva splatting her face. Her brown eyes wide with terror.
"Y-Yes sir, I am just food, sir." Her voice quivered as she looked ahead. She avoided eye contact as much as possible. But pleased with her answer he moved on to the next cadet to harass. Sauntering through the rows of cadets he picked on each and everyone of them. Passing the ones with hollow faces, the ones who know loss and pain. These hollow faces were determined with most of them being gaunt. They held the need to strive for greatness.
The next cadet he stopped once again to harass. His wrinkled face assessed a tall, lean girl. Her expression was cold and her eyes daring him to question her. Her hair is nearly white while her eyes are a light green, somewhat betraying the cold and calculating backstory behind them. She remained motionless as Shadis attempted to scare her by swinging his fist towards her face.
She blinked slowly and peered up and him a small smirk forming on her face. Satisfied at her steadfast and prowess he moved over to the next recruit, Connie Springer.
...
"I can't believe he still has potato girl running and running." Connie sighed and leaned his back over the railing. The small boy ran a hand through his buzzed hair, his golden eyes squinting to see the girl staggering to move.
"She's been at it for nearly five hours. She's been told to run until she's on the verge of death. But none of that seems to bother her as much as skipping meals." Eren Jeager shrugged standing beside Armin Arlet. Eren was the proudest cadet the Garrison had ever seen. Constantly picking fights and sticking to his kind of psychopathic dream, to destroy every last Titan.
Armin Arlet on the other hand was the complete opposite. Rather that commence in a physical battle he would debate. His power with words was stronger than his physical abilities.
"Well if were me, and I saw a delicious steamed potato just sitting there. I would have eaten it as well." Mara Cross explained joining on their conversation by jumping from the ground and pushing herself up on the railing, interrupting the cadets conversation.
"Oi, where did you come from?!" Connie gave her a weird look for simply joining in on their conversation, as they had no idea who she was.
"The ground. But if that's not the answer your looking for I assume you know basic biology. I came from my mother womb." She gave him a sly smirk, her green eyes glowing.
"Well...erm...that is not what I meant." Connie's ears flushed red in embarrassment.
"I know." She swung herself down onto the wooden porch and and leaned forward on the rail, resting her elbows on the thin piece of wood and placing her chin upon her two palms.
"So, we never heard where you are from Eren." Marco Bott quickly changed the subject. He turned to look at Eren with slight interest.
Marcos positive behavior made him a good canadet for being the middleman in fights, never the aggressor.
"Armin and I are both from Shiganshina." Eren explained wrapping his arm around Armin's neck. This resulted with Armin letting out a yelp in protest.
But that statement put the group into shock, well all except Mara she just sat there boredly watching Sasha run.
"So you have seen the Colossal Titan?!" Connie piped up with curiosity laced in his voice.
"Well, yeah." Eren answered. Mara though could hear hesitation in his voice. Bad memories mustn't be awakened and she let out a quiet sigh too quiet for others to hear. And watched as poor Sasha stumbled over a rock.
As soon as Mara concluded that the others had their attention averted from her, she slipped off the railing and gracefully went her own way, pale hands shoved into her pockets. She didn't want any attention draw to her, not that she ever wanted it in the first place.
"What about you? I don't think we ever caught your name or where your from?" Marco turned to where Mara was, but was met with an empty rail. "W-Where'd she go?"
"I don't know, she's a weird one. Notice how she didn't even flinch when Shadis threatened to punch her? After watching him headbutt Jean we all knew he was capable." Eren explained cracking his knuckles.
"She seems nice to me." Armin added, trying to ease the tension.
"Nice doesn't always mean good though." Eren squinted off into the distance where her figure blended into the night sky.
...
In the makeshift cafeteria, Mara sat at the edge of a table playing with her soup. Lifting her spoon and emptying it letting the chowder slosh down into the tin. Hunger wasn't on her mind right now and she had nothing better to do right now. Not to mention the soup smelled foul to her.
However, on the other side of the cafeteria, about the majority of the cadets were huddled around Eren, asking him questions about Titans and his home. At one point the poor boy looked as if he was going to throw up.
Finally lifting the soup to her mouth for a taste, there was a light thud to her right from someone sitting down next to her. She jerked the spoon away from her mouth so she didn't spill it.
"How's the soup?" The figure asked her.
Eyes darting to the voice, "I would tell you, but I haven't even tasted it yet."
"Oh is that so? You've been playing with it for the past half hour. I thought you took at least one bite and went 'Ew this soup is too good for a priss like myself.' you know?" The boy joked with a confident smirk on his face.
Turning her head to see the boy, "Your Jean right?" Her eyes narrowed at the teen in front of her.
His light brown hair covered the dark buzzed part of his hair. His squinty brown eyes and short nose, almost gave him a horse like appearance. He had plastered a smile on his face, but Mara knew it was an act.
"The one and only. Pleasure to meet you." He gave her a grin that normally might have swept any girl off her feet, but Mara wasn't any girl.
"Oh right, your the prick that wants to join the Military police and have the easy life." Dropping her spoon into her soup caused a soft sploush. His expression kind of went from flirty to oh-shit in a matter of two seconds.
She gave him a sarcastic smile, and got up from her seat and gave a mock bow, "Oh the great highness who wants nothing more than to protect his lazy ass, how will a frail girl like me ever last in this shitty world? Without a pig like you protecting me?"
"And your the bitch Shadis went easy on. In fact we don't even know your name or anything about you!" He got up from his seat furiously. Now the room was silent even those questioning Eren to wits end.
"My names Mara, Asshole. Mara Cross. As for where I'm from, I'm from a small village in the mountains." She explained loudly shoving a finger in his chest.
Pleased with the information her got out of her, he sat down and began his meal. He left her standing after her announcement and she let out a stressed sigh. Running a hand through her choppy hair, she pushed his tray of food out from in front of him, he looked up giving her a triumphant look.
"You want to play it that way, Asshole? Okay Two can play that game." She picked up her tin of soup and dumped it on his head. With that she grabbed a piece of bread and stormed out. She left Jean soaked in the foul smelling chowder and a disgusted face.
"So Eren, what does a normal Titan look like?" A miscellaneous cadet questioned. Eren pressed a hand to his mouth as he relived his mothers death, fear shinning brightly from his eyes.
"How about we leave him alone guys?" Marco intervened the question when he noticed Eren's state. However, it wasn't long after when they heard Eren murmuring something that grew louder by the sentence,
"I'm going to kill them. Every last Titan. I'm going to join the Scout Regiment and defeat every last Titan." He proclaimed passionately. Mara heard him from outside, since she was simply eating on the porch.
"That's a death wish you know?" Jean stood up from his seat dripping chowder. He shook his hands, trying to rid the chowder from his fingers and arms.
"Yeah?! An so what! It's better than wasting away in the interior pretending to be a soldier!" Eren shot back, "And besides Jean I don't think you want to get into another fight tonight."
Jean stormed over to Eren's table and lifted him up from the ground by the collar of his shirt. "What your dream is is just a death wish! When will you get that through that thick head of yours?" Ignoring the comment about his earlier fight he challenged Eren indirectly and amidst the boys quarreling. Christa the loveable blonde crept out of the cabin carrying three loaves of bread, in midst of the chaos.
"Oh hello Mara!" She chirped at Mara who was sitting under the rails of the porch, legs hanging from the platform.
"Hello small blonde hair girl!" She gave a small wave.
"My name is Christa, and I saw you only took one loaf of bread, and we start training tomorrow....so here you go!" She handed Mara a small loaf of bread, which she took thankfully taking a giant bite out of it.
"Well I've gotta run, so see you later!" With a small wave Christa bounded off.
That was odd? Taking another bite of bread Mara laid back on the platform. She almost seemed fake about it. Like I was charity....
"So it seems the bread fairy already made her first stop." Ymir leaned up against the doorway looking down at the pale girl, her auburn hair looking orange in the setting sun.
"Sure did. Sweet girl." Mara nodded at Ymir lifting her half eaten bread. The tall girl made her way from the porch and stood in front of the extremely pale girl.
"A little too sweet for my taste." The two girls locked eyes as Mara nodded a response. She knew Ymir's little secret, about why she joined the Cadet corps. Thieves have no trust amongst themselves, but she had known Ymir for a long time.
"Ymir, be careful alright." Mara closed her eyes and rested her hands behind her head.
"Same goes for you Mara. They might figure out you lied to them about your home town." With that Ymir strolled off after Christa.
Shit, I didn't think about that.
