Chapter 24: The Big Game
"Dig faster," Parker heard Hankel's voice.
They turned off the flashlight and moved closer to the two men. To avoid being discovered, the young agent stayed in the shade of the trees.
Spencer and Hankel stood a few steps apart. Spencer had a shovel in his hand and was digging a hole in the ground and Hankel was watching him.
"I'm not strong enough," Spencer muttered meekly.
Parker felt a surge of anger as the young agent realized that Spencer was digging his own grave.
They saw red.
"You're all weak," said Hankel.
The man took off his coat and stepped closer to Spencer.
"Get out of there."
"Hankel!"

A few days before.
The BAU team (minus Gideon) had decided to go out together, Hayley was also there.
At some point the team split up in the bar. A few danced, JJ destroyed two guys at darts, and Parker found themselves talking to Spencer and another couple at one point.
"Ask me any question."
"'Return to Tomorrow,'" the man, George, replied.
"'Return to Tomorrow," Season 2, production number 51, an alien entity, Sargon, takes over Kirk's body, while two others take over Spock and Doctor Mulhall's."
"Alien races appearing?"
"Trick question."
"A race is never identified; Sargon is a disembodied mind."
"And the Doctor McCoy quote?"
Spencer couldn't answer that question right away, but Parker knew the answer. However, they didn't say anything at first because Spencer looked cute when he was thinking.
"Five, four, three, two..."
Before Charlotte could finish the countdown, Parker answered the question.
"'I won't peddle flesh. I'm a physician!'"
They giggled and tapped the table lightly.
"You know what that means, drink!"
The evening, which had started so really great, ended far too soon for the team. It was Parker and Spencer's turn to ask the questions when JJ walked up to them.
There was a new case, and it couldn't wait.
~~~~
"You know, it never fails. Just as I'm getting my groove thing going... Bam! We're back at the BAU," complained Derek.
He stepped away from the coffee machine and sat next to Spencer at the round conference table.
"Statistically, a case doesn't come in with any more frequency if you're at a gathering than if you aren't. It's a trick of the mind. We merely remember the ones that came in that way more," explained Spencer.
"Besides, is it really that hard for you to get your "groove thang" going again?"
"Only when he's sleeping," Gideon commented.
The profiler also entered the room and sat down.
"What?"
"Where were you tonight?" Hotch asked.
"I told you; I went to the Smithsonian."
"You missed a good time."
"I had a good time."
"Well, that's definitely over–"
JJ was the last step into the room, grabbed the remote and started.
"Georgia. The Kyles, Dennis and Lacy, were murdered an hour ago in their suburban Atlanta home."
"An hour ago?"
"The police were on the scene unusually fast."
"Why?"
"One of the UnSub's called them and told them that the other was about to murder the victims."
"You're kidding."
"From inside the house. According to the dispatcher, the first male sounded terrified and begged them to get there because the others, who they both identified as Raphael, was about to kill the "sinners" that live there."
"Sinners?"
"The 911 center is going to send Garcia a copy of the tape."
"How fast was the police response time?" Spencer wanted to know.
"Four minutes, 26 seconds. During which time, Raphael managed to do this–"
JJ showed the team the crime scene photos and it looked pretty bad.
"In four and a half minutes?" Emily repeated.
"Mr. Kyle is a dot-com millionaire. His company is one of the largest employers in the community. There's going to be media coverage. Also, when they arrived, the police found this displayed prominently on the bed."
It was a torn page from the Bible. There were blood stains on the edges and a passage was marked with a marker.
"Revelation, Chapter 6, Verses 8."
"They're killing sinners. These guys are on a mission."
"And mission-based killers won't stop killing."
"And I looked, and behold, a pale horse, and his name that sat upon him was Death," Hotch read.
"– And Hell followed with him."
~~
"This is a bad one, isn't it?" Emily said as the jet took off.
"I have a really bad feeling about this," Parker muttered.
They never had a 'good' feeling when they were on their way to a new case, but this time it was something different.
"UnSubs with a cause are never good," said Derek.
"Pets? I just got the 911 call from the Georgia State Police," Garcia said via laptop.
"911, what's your emergency?"
"I'm at 1527 Chestnut Drive."
"I know where you're calling from, sir. What's your emergency?"
"He thinks they're too greedy. They have too much."
"Too much what?"
"Stuff. Possessions. Things they don't need. Hurry!"
"You're calling because these people have too much stuff, sir?"
"No. I'm calling because Raphael..."
"That's enough," said a third voice.
"I don't want to", stuttered the first male voice.
"He's calling because Raphael is going to kill the sinners that live here," explained the second male voice.
"I'm sorry, did you say somebody is killing someone?" the woman from the 911 hotline wanted to know, but the UnSubs had already hung up.
"Well, UnSub One definitely sounds frightened, maybe he's doing this against his will," said Emily.
"I doubt it," Gideon objected. "He whispered."
"He could have called out to save them instead of calling 911."
"Not if he had a gun to his head."
"If he had a gun to his head, why would he have dialed 911?"
"The second UnSub said Raphael was going to kill someone. Is there a third?" asked JJ.
"Referring to oneself in the third person is not uncommon for an UnSub. Ted Bundy gave detailed accounts of his murders, but he never admitted to doing it. He would just say "the killer," explained Spencer.
"So, I'm going to go ahead and run the name Raphael through the Georgia criminal databases as well as our own," Garcia reported
"Thanks, Garcia."
"You're Welcome, my lounger," said Garcia and ended the video chat.
"A killing team on a mission in rural Georgia. We know what that means."
"They're not going to stop until the mission's complete," Parker muttered.
"We need to hit the ground running. JJ, we need an inside picture of the victims. Victimology can be critically important in a mission-based spree," Hotch instructed her.
"Already on it."
"Prentiss, Parker, go where the bodies are. Examine the wounds. They managed to kill two victims in four and a half minutes. We need to know how."
"You got it."
Parker nodded and would accompany Emily. Although they didn't want to let Spencer out of their sight. And again the young adult didn't know why?
"I'm going to the Atlanta Field Office and go over case files. It'd be unusual for a first kill to be this efficient. Reid, you and Morgan come with me to the crime scene. We land in less than an hour "Everybody, try to get some rest."
~~
"They're all long, deep gashes. Each victim has virtually the same wounds. Both throats cut. A vertical gash up one arm from wrist to elbow, and a vertical gash down one leg from crotch to upper thigh," explained the coroner.
"Major arteries," Parker summarized.
They lifted the shroud a little to take a closer look at the wounds.
"It's damned efficient."
"How much knowledge of anatomy would someone need to do this?" asked Emily.
"Anyone with a basic understanding of the body knows where these arteries are."
"And do you have any idea which one of these wounds was delivered first?" asked Parker.
They covered the body again and stepped away from the table.
"Well, there was active blood flow from each of the wounds, so they were probably all delivered at about the same time. With any of these wounds, the victim would bleed out quickly. Almost like an animal at slaughter. No, exactly like an animal at slaughter. A deer or a lamb or a cow, something like that. You cut the throat first then sometimes open up other major arteries to assist in draining the carcass."
"So maybe a hunter?"
"Or a farmer– Pretty much anyone in rural Georgia."
"Oh."
~~~~
It turned out that Mr. Kyle's murder was filmed, and the video was now on the Internet.
The UnSubs hacked the computers via the WiFi. This way they were able to turn off the Kyles' laptop when Spencer and Parker went to look at it.
"You can totally access someone's computer remotely. It's actually done a lot today. When a mortal calls for tech support, instead of giving you instructions, the tech can work on your computer from wherever she is," Garcia explained by phone.
"And they maintain the access even after the work is done?"
"I suppose you could install a Trojan horse."
"Something left in the computer to be turned on later. It's the same way that websites get pop-up ads onto your computer."
"Garcia check the phone records and see if they called tech support in the last six months."
"Right-o. And if you get me the laptop, I can search the drive for anything implanted there."
"Fast as we can."
"By the way, this video? It's gone crazy viral," the technical analyst reported afterwards.
"What does that mean?"
"That means it's the most downloaded video on the entire Internet. Worldwide. And. Judging by the responses people seem to think it's pretty cool."
"Call us if you find anything on the Kyles' computer."
"Yeah."
"Murder is entertainment?" muttered Gideon.
"They probably don't even realize it's real. People see so many images online every day. They might assume it's marketing for a horror film or something."
"The UnSubs are right about one thing. The world is pretty screwed up."
~~
"So, what have we got so far?" Hotch started the brainstorming session.
"Well, the killings are clinically efficient. And they had the earmarks of a slaughter as in an animal."
"Or a sacrifice."
"We haven't been able to find anything in federal or state databases that suggests similar crimes. As far as I can tell, it's the first in the series."
"At least one member of the team may believe he's killing in the name of God, suggesting a psychopathy that should display extreme levels of disorganization. Yet there are forensic countermeasures and someone in control enough to do complicated computer work," said Spencer.
"One's organized, the other's extremely disorganized–," Parker summarized.
"– but what's strange is that the one we would consider most in control, that made the phone call, can't seem to stop the other from killing. Usually, the frenzied personality takes direction from the cooler head."
"Let's look at that. UnSub One called the police before the killing, but he didn't leave time for them to get there. Is the phone call just a defense in case of capture? Maybe he didn't want to stop the other, but he did whatever he had to do to cover himself."
"So, what do we have so far?" Gideon repeated the question and answered it himself shortly afterwards. "Not enough."
~~
"So, Franks is right. None of the open knife cases fit," JJ reported as she re-joined the others.
"Tell me there's a 'but'," Hotch asked.
"I looked at it a different way. I looked for unsolved home invasions. Three months ago there was a prowler called in directly outside of the Kyles' house."
"A prowler?"
"The witness was walking his dog in a nearby park. He saw a man in dark clothing go over the back wall and start sneaking up to the house. By the time the police got there, the prowler was gone."
"Only one man?"
"Apparently."
"Was the witness able to describe him?" asked Parker.
"If he did, it's not in this case file."
"Is there a name and address?"
"Tobias Hankel. Lives about an hour from here."
"It's a long shot, but he might be able to give us a description. Why don't you and Reid go out there and see if he remembers something."
Spencer got up and set off with JJ. Parker also stood up and stopped the two of them at the front door.
"Guys, please be careful."
"We are," JJ assured.
"Love, is everything okay?" Spencer asked, looking worriedly at his other half.
"Yeah. You know I'm always worried about everyone," Parker lied.
Spencer raised an eyebrow.
"Okay– it's this stupid gut feeling. I mean, I'm worried, but I can't shake this feeling that something bad is going to happen. And I just can't concentrate because, what if something happens? And–"
"Hey–" Spencer interrupted Parker.
He took Parker's hands in his.
"Breathe."
The young adult only now noticed that they had basically been holding their breath.
Parker took a moment and took three deep breaths.
"Better?"
"Yeah, thanks."
"Good," said the young genius and gave Parker a kiss on the cheek. "It won't take long. I promise."
Little did Parker know that Spencer wouldn't– couldn't keep his promise.
As it turns out, Parker's gut feeling was right– something bad was about to happen.
Tobias Hankel, the guy Spencer and JJ wanted to talk to, was one of the UnSubs.
However, when the team arrived at the house, only JJ was there, no sign of Spencer and Hankel.
