An Alternate World

A ginger girl with curly hair worked tirelessly to finish up cleaning the record shop. She was just trying to get her extra credit in before summer break was finished.

"Am I done yet, Sag?" Taurus said.

"You still have a half an hour left on your shift," her manager, Sagittarius replied. His brown hair was messed up, and he had bags under his eyes from taking summer classes.

"Fine." She then took to reorganizing some of the shelves. "How's your classes?"

"I'm your boss, not your friend," Sagittarius scowled.

"What you are is an asshole," Taurus shot back. "Humor me, I'm bored."

"They were good."

Taurus grabbed a stool to stand on. "What are you majoring in?"

"Business. You?"

"Politics. I intend to make a difference."

"All politicians are bloodsucking, selfish asses," Sagittarius hissed, folding his arms.

"Yeah, well." A small smirk slid onto her face. "They'll barely have asses by the time I'm done with them."

Sagittarius leaned back. A laugh played on his lips as he unfolded his arms and put them in his pockets. "Hypothetically, what would you say if I asked you on a date?"

"Hypothetically, I'd say yes," Taurus replied.

"In that case, do you wanna go out with me?" Sagittarius asked her.

"No."

Sagittarius raised his eyebrows and rubbed the back of his neck. His lips pursed.

"Chill out, I was joking. We can go during our lunch break."

Scorpio overlooked her staff. She ran the company with the biggest name in clean energy. She was left it after her parents died.

"Hey, Scorp," her secretary said. "You got a call from your brother. He wants to know if you're around for lunch."

"Tell him I am," Scorpio replied. "You can come too, Cancer."

"Really? Thank you!" Cancer smiled, before going back to her desk.

Scorpio observed the world around her and gave a little smile. She was going to change the world. Make it cleaner. Better. More alive than it had been in years. She had her brother at her side, her best friend and secretary, and the spirits of her parents for guidance. She glanced back at Cancers desk.

Maybe. She thought. Just maybe something more will come of it.

So, as the clock struck 11:11, she made a quick wish. She wished for happiness to everyone she knew and much more happiness for one girl in particular.

Scorpio smiled and walked into her office to finish getting ready for the day.

Capricorn stood at a table at his high school as he signed a form.

"You sure you're up for this, kid?" The woman running it asked him. "The military is hard work. Hard on the body and hard on the soul."

Capricorn pursed his lips as he handed it to her. "I've gotta be, General Leo. I have a family to worry about. My sisters sick, and my parents don't make enough money to help her."

"In that case, I hate to be against you in a gunfight," Leo replied, stamping his papers and paper clipping them.

Capricorn stared at her in confusion. Why would a distinguished General be afraid to face off against him? He had no training, no anything.

Leo noticed her his stare and shook her head. "The ones with everything to lose have more fight in them."

Capricorn raised his eyebrow. "You don't have everything to lose?"

Leo glanced at a picture of a former General and her eyes flitted away. "Not anymore I don't. Tell you what, I'll take you out to lunch and we can discuss what you'll be doing in the military."

Capricorn nodded. "Thank you."

"So, Gemini, are you sure you won't go out with me?" Pisces asked her.

The blonde girl scoffed. "And as I've told you the last five times, no. Listen, Pi. We're better off as friends. In fact, I have sworn off boys."

"That's bull and you know it," Aries piped from beside her.

"You know how hard it is to be a single mother to your brother?" Gemini asked, pretending to be angry. "Especially when you won't stop swearing around him."

"I don't swear around Jaden!" Aries defended himself.

"That's bullshit because someone does and it's certainly not me!" Gemini whisper-shouted. "So fuck off, Branch."

"You and Virgo take Latin in middle school and suddenly you know what my last name means!" Aries sighed.

Gemini laughed. "What were we fighting about?"

"No clue. I'll go get you another Red Bull," Aries said, offering it as a peace offering.

"It's almost rush hour, do you need any help?" Pisces asked.

"Not really, but have a red bull on hand just Incase I get snappy again," Gemini said. "I've been up late making a bunch of things for a wedding. It's so suffocating."

Some customers started to spill in. A boy with messy brown hair and tired eyes walked in with a girl with dusty red hair and bright green eyes. The ordered a couple coffees and sat down.

A boy with brown hair and glasses came in, a younger boy with him. He grinned at Gemini. "This is the kid I'm fostering. Gemini meet Jack."

Gemini shook his hand. "It's nice to meet you Jack. My brother Jaden is in the back if you two want to hang out. Virgo, you can go too and translate."

"Sure. Happy rush hour."

Gemini groaned as more people walked in. An obviously rich Asian girl walked in and ordered some apple cider.

"Is that Libra?" Sagittarius whispered to Taurus.

Taurus took a sip of her coffee and nodded. "It's so weird. We live together but I never see her."

The two went back to chatting and left Taurus' sister-to-be alone.

After that, a black girl came in with her hair pulled back, and a smaller Asian girl at her side. The two of them sat down before ordering, as if waiting for someone.

The person they were waiting for walked in. He was tall, black, and held a book in his hand. After saying hello, he was elected to order everyone's stuff.

He walked up to the counter. "Hey, can I get two coffees, one hot chocolate, and one apple pie."

Gemini nodded. "Coming right up!"

"Wait, do we go to high school together?" Aquarius asked, furrowing his eyebrows.

Gemini bit her lip. "I highly doubt—"

"Yeah, we did! We had biology together," Aquarius cut her off. "And you got up in front of the class and explained fermentation better than the teacher."

"Oh, that was easy. It's just what happens in bread," Gemini blushed, making the hot chocolate.

"It was epic! I haven't seen you around for a while," Aquarius remembered. "Where have you been?"

This is the moment Gemini dreaded. Explaining herself. "Oh, I dropped out. After my father died, I had to run the bakery. Technically I'm under my grandmothers care but she sleeps all day."

Aquarius frowned. "I'm sorry to hear that."

Gemini shrugged. "I miss my dad, but I'm
happy. I love to bake and it doesn't come with homework."

"Well, id love to see you again," Aquarius grinned. "Maybe I'll stop by more often."

A smile danced across Gemini's face as she finished up his order. "I'd like that."

"SWEARIN' OFF BOYS, HUH?" A certain tree branch yelled.

Gemini spelled 'Fuck You' in sign language.

That's when a boy with brown hair and eyes walked in next to a Latina girl. They ordered some cupcakes before sitting down.

Virgo came out the back to talk to Gemini. "Hey, so, apparently Jaden is going to teach Jack sign language. Anyways, I have a meeting with a possible publisher."

"Thats great!" Gemini smiled. "Good luck. I know this will be the one."

"I'm trying to publish a book with the guy not be his soulmate," Virgo joked. "But thank you."

Virgo exited the building and ran to the publishers place. That's when he heard a voice behind him.

"Wait!"

Virgo turned around. It was the rich Asian girl from the bakery.

She ran up to him. "You dropped this."

"Thank you," Virgo said. "I didn't even realize—"

"What's the story about?"

"Oh, it's a group of twelve people teaming up to stop a war," Virgo explained. "It's them cleaning up the messes of the previous generation."

"Is it nonfiction?" The girls eyes were burning into him.

"It's fiction, actually."

The girl squinted his eyes. "Who are the twelve?"

"Well, there's Archie, Talulah, Genevieve, Callie, Leona, Vincent, Lisa, Stella, Sam, Connor, Alex, and Percy."

The girl tilted her head. "Those are very normal names."

"They're very normal people," Virgo replied.

"Shouldn't heroes be extraordinary?"

"Not in my stories. In my stories heroes a ordinary people who extraordinary things."

"I think I've lived this story in an alternate world," the girl claimed.

"Have you?" Virgo asked her.

"Yes. The voice in my head agrees," the girl said, before walking away.

Virgo felt an odd familiarity to the girl. "What's your name?"

"Libra!" The girl shouted, but to Virgo she suddenly seemed more like... like a Lisa.

And then she was gone. But they both knew they'd meet again, in this world or the next.
