Chapter Thirteen
The group of travellers had just stopped so that they could cook their dinner. They had found a large fast-moving river which they followed, knowing it would lead directly to Oswor. Also having constant water was working in their favour.
The six of them had sat in a circle with a small fire in the middle, while two rabbits were being roasted over it. Aymer was once again cooking the meal while Aldith and Avice were cleaning their swords with a cloth. Everyone else had taken this time to rest and have a quick nap. But as usual, Gaywn took the resting seriously, the noise that he was given off sounded like a farm of pigs.
The only sound you could hear was the crackling of the flames and the occasional hiss from the cooking rabbit flesh. Once Aldith was happy with the shine on her blade, she picked up the sheath and slipped it over the blade. Placing the sheathed sword by her right side, Aldith lend forward and moved her hands closer to the fire to warm them up slightly. "Dinner will be five more minutes," Aymer muttered as he turned the rabbits again. "Great! I am starving!" Gaywn half yelled as he sat up from his laying position.
"Any mention of food, you have not changed much. Have you?" Avice laughed with a large smile, followed by the rest of the group. They sat in silence for a little longer, before Aymer took the first rabbit off the fire and began to break it apart. He continued with the second rabbit before handing out equal parts to the group.
Aldith went to eat her first time but stopped when the snapping of a twig close by sound. Her heart sank and she stood to her feet quickly and quietly. "Get up!" She hushed to Aymer, causing everyone to look at her confused. "Someone's coming." She continued as every quickly stood up as well.
"Leave our horses. Gaywn, take Killian and the others. Head to Oswor and don't stop. We will catch up." Aldith ordered Gaywn who nodded in agreement. Avice smirked to Aldith as the two women sat back down at the still-burning fire. "Hold on, why are you not coming with us? There could be twenty of them!" Killian pushed past Gaywn. "Do you remember the tavern?"
"Yes! But they were drunk idiots who could barely walk two steps without tripping over themselves." Killian explained to Aldith as she picked up her food and began to eat. "Killian come on, we have to go," Gaywn told him grabbing his shoulder, to which Killian ripped from him taking a step forward. "Like hell, I am not leaving them!" This seemed to boiled Gaywn's temper as his jaw clenched tightly with a glare at the prince.
"You think, I would leave them both here if I didn't think they could look after themselves?" Gaywn told him sternly. "I highly suggest that you stop making assumptions about things you do not know a shred about."
"Killian, I think we should listen," Aymer spoke softly for his prince. Killian sighed heavily before shaking his head and walking away from the two women to his horse. Once Avice was sure the men had gone, her eyes quickly trained onto Aldith.
"So, " she drew out, "Prince Killian?"
"What about him?" Aldith asked while taking another bite of the rabbit.
"I see it. I know what you are feeling." Avice told her
"What?"
"Don't play daft with me, you like Killian. I see the way you look at him when you think no one is looking." Aldith blushed slightly as he head dipped a little in embarrassment. "I wouldn't worry though, cause he looks at you the same way when you're not looking," Avice stated simply. Aldiths head flung up and her eyes connected with Avice. Just as Aldith was about to ask what she meant. Several armoured men appeared.
"Two women, alone in a forest. Isn't that very dangerous?" One of the men spoke menacingly.
"It wouldn't have to be dangerous if it wasn't for men like yourselves," Aldith stated continuing to eat her meal.
"Now that's not a very nice way to speak to the man who decided what is about to happen to you."
"See, this is why a woman can't do certain things. It disgusts me that I and my friend can't go on a simple camping trip and not have to feel afraid for our lives." Aldith said as she put her bowl down on the ground. She stood up and walked over to the man. Avice followed her lead.
"But I wonder. What would it be like, if men feared woman?" Aldith asked him now standing only a few inches from him.
"Man will never fear the weak." The man smirked down at her.
"I never said weak." Aldith chuckled before pulled her sword from its sheath and then piercing it through his chest. The man releases a small painful breath. "I said, woman." She whispered in his ear before she retracted the blade from his chest allowing him to slump to the ground motionless. Avice calmly walked to Aldiths side as she unsheathed her blade.
The remaining men, around six of them, all rushed at the two women. Avice and Aldith engaged in a dance of combat with them. They gracefully twisted and slices as they fought. So smooth were their movements that the armoured men could not predict their next attack.
It wasn't long until all but one of the men remained standing. He looked directly at Aldith who now started stalking towards him with a smirk on her lips. The men turned to run away before was stopped by Avice pointing her blade directly at his throat. The man's hands flew up in surrender as he quaked were he stood.
"What is your business out this far?" Aldith asked him causing him to turn around and face Aldith.
"King Dorgoth sent squads of soldiers out looking for the escaped Kings Knight. His orders are to kill her on-site." The man informed her.
"I see. Well, you can tell King Dorgoth that if he wants me dead, then he can try when I come to take back my throne!" The fear quickly flushed his face, "I suggest you run and deliver the message before I put a dagger in your throat." Aldith hissed at him causing him to whimper and twist around to run away. The man tripped over a tree root that was slightly raised from the ground. Before struggling to stand back to his feet.
"Pathetic." Avice rolled her eyes with a chuckle.
