Another Dream
The bathroom lights flickered rapidly before finally dying out. Starting from the center, checkered floor tiles stacked on to each other in an orderly fashion opening to a deep gaping hole in the bathroom floor. Once again, Sam fell into the abyss of vague imageries of his dream.
Do you love me?
His fall, ever so eternal, that he looked more like floating rather than falling. He opened his eyes to see the cluster of ceiling lights of the bathroom shrink to nothingness. Once again, he was enveloped in darkness. He couldn't see anything despite knowing for sure that his eyes were wide open.
Answer me. Do you love me?
He tried to shout but no voice came out from his mouth, though he heard someone else shouting from a distant location somewhere in this darkness. He tried to scream again, and the same voice came out from afar. When he tried to do it one more time, his fall came to a halt. But he didn't hit the ground. He was levitating somewhere in the middle of this dark void. Then he heard an echo of a light switch flicked somewhere, and the lights went on. Rows of lights came to life from beneath him rising to the top. He was on a spherical place with him as the centerpiece, floating ghostly in the middle, back arched, and front facing upward.
Why won't you answer me?
His feet touched an invisible fluid, sending waves of glowing ripples all over the place. The lights went out, except for one spotlight shining down on a canvas painting a few feet away from Sam. He looked at the painting, and it gave him a sudden surge of warmth, the kind of warmth you would feel in golden fields of wheat in a summer afternoon. He extended his arm and tried to float near the painting. Then, a loud honking of something mechanical, somewhere very close, stopped him. As he did, a large speeding truck passed by him, sparing just a few inches from his face to being swiped.
If you won't answer, I should go now.
When the truck had passed, he saw that the scenery had changed to a cityscape. He was on a sidewalk with one foot on the highway. He felt someone tugging his clothes from behind. He looked back and saw a little girl. She was crying as she was clutching his shirt.
"You idiot! Why would you do that?" She cried.
He tried to say something but a little boy's voice came out from his mouth. "Just answer me," the voice said. Surprised by the change of voice, he looked down and saw a little boy standing beneath him. But a more accurate thing to say would be that the boy was standing under him as he was suspended above. They didn't seem to be bothered by him floating above them. He was like a ghost.
"Damn it! I don't know!" The little girl looked down and tears began flowing on her cheeks.
"It's been a year since you said 'yes' to me. Now you're telling me that word meant nothing?" The little boy replied. But, the little girl just kept her gaze down as she cried.
The little boy went closer. He smiled and hugged her, pressing her head gently to his chest. "You stupid girl... your words and actions are contradicting." He kissed her forehead. "I'm sorry... Hush now... there's no need to cry. I love you too much that your 'I don't know' is enough for me to go on."
"You'd risk your life even if I'm not sure of you?" The girl said in a muffled voice.
"Yes... though that move was a bit reckless." He shrugged his shoulders. Then he bent closer to her shoulders. "I love you because I love you... and that's that." The boy whispered.
The girl looked up, and their faces were only mere millimeters away from touching each other's noses. The boy leaned closer, slowly as if enjoying every second of every moment before their lips brushed against each other.
Sam was taken aback by this surreal moment and wasn't sure why he was seeing this. He looked around the place. It seemed vaguely familiar. Then as he turned around, he suddenly found himself inside a car, in the driver's seat, driving amidst the heavy rainstorm. His phone kept ringing on the passenger seat. He reached for the phone and then there was a loud beeping of the horn followed by sharp screeching sound of the brakes and everything went black.
Another light switch flicked on and everything came in to view once again.
He was now standing amidst a dense cloud of fog. He heard giggles, laughter and joyful shouting all around him but he couldn't see anyone. Then he heard screaming voices coming from a boy and a girl from a distance getting louder and louder: WEEEEEEEEEEEEEH! Then they passed by Sam wrapped in safety harness as they wade through the fog in a dual zipline.
Then another pair of children walked passed him, the boy's arm wrapped around the girl's shoulder. Another pair stood from afar, holding hand in hand, their backs turned to him. From beside him, he heard a boy serenading the girl with a guitar.
"Hello?" He cried. But nobody seemed to notice his presence. "Hello!" This time, he screamed at the top of his lungs.
"What are you doing here, Oliver?" A resentful voice coming from behind surprised Sam. He turned around and saw Melissa, still wearing her beautiful white dress from the party. But she wasn't smiling.
"I'm sorry, Miss. But I think you got the wrong person here." He responded.
Then, Melissa faded in to the dense fog. He ran after her but the ground crumbled beneath him and he fell into a dark abyss once again.
