Chapter 8

Naruto hummed as they crossed the sea via boat. He could feel Kakashi's gaze and tried not to let it bother him. He had attracted a little bit of attention with the vocalist stunt. Not to mention he had revealed some of his sensory abilities as well as sealing. But he would find a way around it. When they touched down, he excused himself for a potty break.

When he was behind a bush, he made a clone to rejoin the others, while he released his henge seal. He shook his limbs to get used to the longer length. He wore his war clothes, and he allowed his eyes to grow cold, entering a phase between war mode and calm.

He was calamity in its physical form. A troubled storm constantly brewing underneath his skin, ready to be unleashed on a whim showed in his eyes as he allowed his chakra to circulate through him.

He ran alongside Team 7, carefully concealing his roiling chakra. He could feel Zabuza and Haku's chakra, faint, and definitely concealed. He raced forward, using his hard-earned chakra control to move as fast as his father's sacred Jutsu, and knocked out the two nin. He slipped a scroll into Zabuza's cow-print pants and dashed back to Team 7, who were walking in silence.

Naruto flared the tiniest sliver of chakra, and the clones' eyes shot towards him, nodding slightly.

Suddenly, the clone threw a kunai into some bushes, killing a rabbit. everyone startled, and Naruto quickly switched with the clone that quickly dispelled. Naruto walked over to the bush and pulled out the limp rabbit. It wasn't the white one from before, just a plain brown forest rabbit. He wiped his kunai on the grass and put it back in his weapons pouch, where it too, dispelled.

He turned to Tazuna. "As thanks for letting us stay at your house. I know how to make an excellent rabbit stew."

Tazuna just laughed. "Hah! I like you kid. Reminds me of myself when I was younger."

And such, the journey continued in silence, everyone a little more relaxed knowing the enigma of the team was confident of no encounters. Though the feeling of Kakashi's gaze was beginning to get disturbingly annoying.

They soon arrived and settled in. Kakashi started talking about some plan that Naruto half-listened to.

That night Naruto pretended to sleep, waiting for Sasuke and Kakashi to succumb to sleep. He felt a chakra briefly flare for all but a millisecond, and sat up silently. He looked to the window and saw a masked Haku. He nodded. Haku vanished, but Naruto could sense the boy dashing towards where he and Zabuza must be staying.

Naruto quickly followed after. He was in striped pajamas and his hair was even messier than usual, not to mention he was barefoot, but he just shrugged. He's be dressed once he undid his henge.

He landed next to Haku. "Haku-otouto." He acknowledged. His eyes grew cold and took on an eerie glow. He stepped into the room. Zabuza wasn't injured, completely fine, and stood with his sword in hand.

Naruto met the ex-Kiri nins gaze evenly. "I am to assume you read my scroll?" He said, voice calm and smooth.

"Yeah, I read it. Don't see why you wanted to meet unless it was to die." Zabuza said gruffly.

Naruto laughed humorlessly. "Momochi Zabuza. Ex-Kiri nin and a member of the Kiri no Shinobigatana Shichinin Shū, The Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist. You wield Kubikiribōchō, The Decapitating Carving Knife. Rumored to be second to none but Hoshigaki Kisame. Who made your blade?"

Zabuza looked shocked. "How does a brat like you know so much??"

Naruto let his henge melt off. "I am Uzumaki-Namikaze Naruto. Who made your blade?"

Zabuza bowed, shocked by the sudden increase in presence. "Uzumaki Kenji." He said quickly.

Naruto stared at the bowed head of the ex-Kiri nin. "And how did Kiri get their hands on the blades?"

"They were a gift in hopes of peace."

"And who betrayed that peace?"

"Kiri."

"Who do you answer to?"

"You."

Naruto took Zabuza's sword and ran his hand along the flat of the blade. It glowed, accepting the chakra the Uzumaki offered. Naruto allowed his finger to be cut on the sharp blade and swiped a fine line of blood down it. The blade hummed, and the blond Uzumaki handed the blade back to Zabuza.

"Glad to have you Momochi Zabuza."

Naruto sighed tiredly as he re-did the henge and used the Hirashin to teleport back to Tazuna's. He had to head back in the morning to pick up Haku. The Ice user would be traveling back to Konoha with them while Zabuza helps Nami get back on their feet from the shadows.

The blond made his way to the room where Team Seven bunked and changed into a large t-shirt that swamped him. He laid down and fell asleep instantly.

Zabuza lurked in the shadows that night as Gato did whatever he was doing in his office. The ex-Kiri nin noticed a pair of ice-blue eyes in the shadows, staring at him. The blond (clone) nodded at him.

Zabuza's mission was to kill Gato. The clone's mission was to kill the thugs.

The clone vanished, and Zabuza proceeded to do his duty.

A few minutes later, screams sounded throughout the base. Zabuza watched, job done, as the clone easily sliced through the thugs, almost like he was water flowing over smooth stones. His eyes were narrow and aged. He was a veteran.

Zabuza's respect for the war-torn man increased, and The clone simply dispelled when its job was done.

'If that was just a clone, I don't want to see what he is truly like in battle.' Zabuza thought. The Kiri-nin clutched the scroll he held a bit tighter.

Naruto's clone didn't want to have to dispel. Not because he was scared of his short existence, but because of how Boss was going to receive the memories in the form of dreams. That's why he had done it as fast as possible, in hopes it would lessen the memory intake.

When he did, he wished he had waited.

Naruto was already having a bad dream. Memories of the war. Memories of death, blood, killing. A giant beast wiping out everything. Then there was...

"KAKASHI!!!"

"Hey, sensei. What's your favorite food?"

"Eggplant and miso. Why?"

"I'll make it for you sometime!"

"Hey, sensei."

"Yeah?"

"Thank you."

"Maa, maa, what for?  After all, all I did was die for you."

Naruto backed away. "W-what?"

"You heard me. You killed me. You are why I'm not here."

A flood of memories streamed into Naruto's mind and the blond began crying in his sleep.

'Why? Why can't people see that all this fighting and hurting isn't right!!??

His blue eyes were wide open, but he was still stuck in the dream. Tears slid from his temples and dripped onto the pillow. A certain silver-haired nin woke as he heard ragged breathing. He looked around and noticed the heaving chest of his blond student. He silently got up and stood over his student. The blond's eyes were wide open, he was sweating heavily, but he was obviously still asleep.

What kind of nightmare could his student possibly be having? The Uzumaki was crying. Kakashi went to shake Naruto awake but suddenly found himself on the floor with an arm against his throat. His lone eye stared into Naruto's clouded ones. Naruto was wide awake now, eyes wild.

He looked like Kakashi after the war. Bolting awake and pinning the nearest person to the ground. But Naruto hasn't been through a war. There was no way.

"Narut-"

"I didn't kill you!"

Kakashi raised an eyebrow. Who did Naruto not kill? He slowly eased the blond's arm off of his throat and kept a careful eye on the heaving blond.

Naruto blinked as he calmed down. Was he awake? He looked down and saw that he was on top of Kakashi. He threw himself back, and the copy nin sat up.

"Naruto. You were having a bad dream." 'More like post-war terrors... Just what has changed about you?'

"Yeah... Thank you Sensei."

Naruto stood and went over to the window. He wasn't going to sleep tonight. Not anymore.

Kakashi sighed and laid back down. He didn't sleep, just listened to his two slumbering students calm breaths, the sound of Naruto's ragged breathing and his dangerous eyes as he laid pinned to the floor. He was worried to say the least.

Daybreak hit, and Kakashi sat up with a sigh, looking to where his blond student stood, only to see he was no longer there. He sighed again.

This was becoming rather troublesome.
