~29~
Lila and I arrived at the hideout to see Lara and Catherine. They flew down to our level and hovered not too far away from us.
Catherine stared at us with a hint of annoyance.
"What's going on?" Lila asked.
Lara spoke up. "You're coming with us. We're taking you to our world. I changed my mind on leaving you here."
"Why?"
Catherine gave me a hard stare and crossed her arms. Her wings flapped in slight agitation. "Why? We're simply giving you a chance to be more involved with our rebellion."
I raised a brow at her as Lila gave me a quick glance and subtly shook her head. I sighed. "Sure, we'll come with you. Can I assume that you'll be carrying us?"
Lara nodded. "Of course."
She landed in front of us as Catherine did the same.
Lara gestured to Catherine. "Catherine will carry your sister while I will carry you."
I nodded. Neither of us were afraid of heights, so it wouldn't be an issue.
Lara and Catherine went behind us. They both put their arms around our waists. Lila smiled at me. I gave her a small smile back. We were joining a rebellion. Something we'd never thought we'd do. In all honesty, I had always thought that Lila would become some sort of celebrity and I would remain a nobody that she'd end up forgetting, because she was too caught up in her fame. Now, here we were about to enter a completely different dimension with winged humans and involved in a rebellion.
They lifted us up to the height of the ledge and dived dangerously close to the ground.
Suddenly, we found ourselves in a completely different building. It was still as dusty and bleak, but the way the moon shone through the holes in the ceiling and the vibe of this building was easily distinguishable.
Catherine and Lara didn't let go of us as we flew over a forest. I looked at Lila to see a shaky smile on her face.
"What will the others do when they see we don't have wings like you?" Lila's voice was filled with pure uncertainty and nervousness.
It may have been "fun" at first to know that we were doing something that would inspire change, but the harsh reality was the fact that we were different. We had no wings whatsoever. We couldn't even pretend. If we were potentially caught by their government, we would suffer grave consequences.
We arrived in front of a tunnel in the forest.
They dropped us as Catherine stood in front of the tunnel with her hands on her hips. "This tunnel is extremely dark inside. It is like a maze. The slightest misstep in the wrong direction can end up with you permanently lost here. I need the both of you to hold hands and to listen to Lara and I's footsteps. If you need to yell, do so."
Lila andI exchanged a glance before nodding at Catherine. We could do this.
Hand in hand, we confidently walked in.
Tap, tap, tap.
Our footsteps echoed in the silence of the tunnel.
Things had gotten better between Lila and I, but I couldn't ignore the nagging insecurity I felt. After all of this was over, would we drift apart? Would I lose my older sister? I didn't want that indifference between Lila and I again. I wanted us to act like siblings. The way we used to act when we were younger. Laughing joyously, and getting annoyed with each over the smallest things. That was what I wanted.
We continued walking in silence until I saw bright light at the end of the tunnel. I chuckled internally at the irony. Tunnels usually represented a dark time and the light at the end of the tunnel represented the fact that you had finally pushed past that dark period.
It made me think of the fact that Lila and I had finally pushed past our differences and reached our light at the end of the tunnel.
We walked through and found ourselves in a cafeteria filled with teenagers, adults, children, and various families with solid-colored and multicolored wings milling around. I knew the world that Alex and the others came from was harsh, but this very moment was filled with beauty like I'd never seen before.
I wasn't surprised when they all gasped upon seeing Lila and I.
"Who are they?"
"Who? You mean what. They can't possibly be human."
"Where are their wings?"
"Were they ripped off?"
"No, the government is cruel, but they'd rather kill us than ever rip off a person's wings."
"You don't know that."
I never liked being the center of attention. That was Lila's forte, but even I knew that she had her insecurities about it. I hated the way they stared at me like I was some sort of exotic animal they had never seen before. I felt the way their eyes bored into me as Catherine shuffled us along.
Lara stayed behind to make an announcement to the others as to why we didn't have wings. I wondered how they'd take to the fact that we were from another dimension.
In the corner of the room, I noticed a man with long white hair and red streaks in it. He had his arms crossed over his chest and one foot on the wall, behind him. His blue eyes seemed otherworldly. His eyes were narrowed in observation. His mouth was upturned in a small smirk on it as he promptly disappeared into thin air.
Who was he?
I elbowed Lila. "Did you see that guy?"
She looked at me and subtly nodded, dropping her voice to a whisper. "Yeah. He didn't have wings either, but nobody noticed him. I wonder if we were the only ones who saw him..."
She tapped Catherine's shoulder and pointed to the corner where we saw the male. "Did you see the guy?"
"What guy?" Catherine's brows furrowed in confusion. "Who are you talking about?"
She stopped walking to face us.
Lila continued speaking, "There was a guy with no wings. He had really long white hair and red streaks in it."
Catherine slowly shook her head. "As far as I know, there's nobody like that here."
Lila's mouth made an 'o' shape as she let out a small chuckle. "I think I confused them with someone else. Sorry!"
Catherine nodded and turned back around.
So Lila and I were the only ones who saw him? That can't be possible.
I ran my hand through my hair.
I'm from another dimension and I'm saying a man disappearing into thin air isn't possible?
