~21~
I enthusiastically jumped up and left the room. I took a deep breath trying to contain my excitement. I'd been wanting things to change and I finally got a chance to really do something. I had a chance to contribute. I confidently walked toward the table where the leader sat. I pulled out a chair and sat in front of her.
"My name is Lara as I mentioned before. I am a she." She gave me a kind smile and put a hand out. I shook her hand knowing a huge smile had appeared on my face. The black mask that covered her face gave her an air of mystery.
"What is your name?"
"Alex," I answered.
"Please tell me why you want to join us Alex."
I heard the rain that had started to drizzle outside.
I heard my mother telling me, repeating it with worry and fear for her only daughter and child.
Never show anyone what your wings really look like. Always cover it with black before you step outside of the house.
I want to be myself, mother. I'm sorry.
Never question the government. The laws are there to protect us.
No, they aren't mother. I'm sorry.
Listen to me Alex. Don't do this. I love you.
I know you do mother. I love you too.
"Lara, if you'd please follow me outside. I need to show you something important." I stood up.
I took a step.
And another.
And another.
Until I was starting in front of the door that I had stepped through not too long ago. I opened it and saw the rain was pouring hard enough now. My mother bought waterproof wing dye and regular dye. The waterproof type tended to be thick and somewhat restraining on my wings. My mother always made me wear it, because I never knew when it could suddenly start raining. Fortunately for me, I had been wearing my regular dye so far.
Lara and Catherine had gotten up and were standing behind me. I stepped outside as I looked up at the crescent moon. I felt the rain pouring down my face making me and my clothes soaking wet. I felt the dye peeling off my wings and falling down onto the grass. I slowly flapped my wings as all the dye slowly came off. I started hovering a few inches off the ground. When the dye had completely come off, I flapped my wings harder as I flew around freely. A few rays of moonlight shone through the trees as I flew around their heads.
Catherine stared at me with a raised brow. "Interesting," she murmured.
Lara nodded in agreement as I landed in front of them. "I see why you want to join. Other than your wings, do you have an actual reason to support it?"
I nodded. "Simple. I wanted to change the world. I know that what goes on is wrong. I've always wanted to do that. I don't want to take a backseat and watch everyone do something while I sit there and watch the TV knowing I could do something but I'm not. That's why I want to join."
Lara gave a slow nod and stuck out her hand. "Welcome to the rebellion Alex."
I shook her hand energetically. "I'll do my best to not let you down Lara!"
"Come inside. You're soaking wet and you're obviously going to need a change of clothes. Take off your shoes and hover," Catherine states.
I lifted a few inches up into the air and flew inside as Catherine beckoned me toward a room. She closed the door and rummaged through finding black jeans, a white shirt, and a black sweatshirt.
"Thanks!" I said.
She gave me a pursed smile and left the room. I changed out of my wet clothes and into the clothes that Catharine brought out for me. I entered the bathroom and stared at myself in the mirror. The way the different colored feathers in my wings stood out.
Then a thought blared into my head.
How will Sara react?
She'll support me, like she said she would. It may take her a while to get used to, but she'll support me...right?
She almost ran away when she figured out who you really were. Who's to say she won't do so again?
She wouldn't. We came this far together. She wouldn't.
Are you sure? What if you found out that you don't know her as well as you think you do?
Well, the only way is to find out.
I left the room and came face to face with Sara who stared at me in pure shock.
"Alex...your wings-"
"What's wrong with them?" I asked defensively.
"Nothing, it's just....they're...multicolored."
"So?"
She avoided my eyes. "How..how long have you had them?"
Is she seriously asking you this?
"Since I was born?"
She held one arm and looked down. "Why didn't you ever tell me?"
My brows raised in surprise. She seemed hurt and I didn't know it was simply because I hadn't told her.
"Well, you never really seemed particularly supportive in the past so I couldn't tell you."
"Can you please try to trust me Alex? I know that I wasn't the best person before, but I really am trying to help you. If you don't talk to me about things, I can't help you."
"Help me? You make it seem like my wings are some sort of taboo Sara."
Her shoulders slumped helplessly. "That's not what I'm saying Alex. I'm just saying that I wished you would've told me. I'm doing my best to stand by you Alex, but it doesn't exactly make me feel better to know that you're hiding things from me."
She sighed and turned away from me. "I need to go talk to Lara. I'll talk to you later."
"Sara..."
Is she really that hurt because I didn't tell her about my wings?
I sighed and went up the stairs. As I entered the room, Alistair looked up in surprise. "Your wings..."
"Your wings are pretty," Drew commented.
Finally. The first person to actually say something good about them instead of beating around the bush.
"Thanks!"
I laid down on a nearby couch. Even though it was silent, it was deafening. The awkward tension in the room made me wonder if Alistair knew Drew. And if so, I wondered what happened between the both of them.
I let out a loud sigh as Drew cleared his throat and Alistair continued to awkwardly look down. Oh, well. There was nothing I could do about it.
'Author's Note'
-Gasp- Alex is now revealing her wings. Who agrees with Sara's reaction?
It's not like Sara is saying that she doesn't support Alex, but their relationship would be better if the communication was more open.
I love you all, I want you to be loved, and I hope you are loved! 💕
