Chapter 3
"What are you doing, Vangelic?" he asked, placing his right hand on his hip.
Alanna's smiled vanished. "What does it look like I'm doing?" she answered him.
Derrick shook his head, and walked closer to her. He placed his hands on edge of the deep sink, and bent over to see her face. "No, I mean why are you serving him? He's a worthless pig and you do anything he asks. Why?"
Alanna stopped washing the tomatoes for a moment, and sighed. "Because I must," she said, softly.
Derrick cocked his head and leaned in closer to get a look at her face. But she didn't want him to see her face. With the bruise on her cheek from last night and the red mark on her face from this morning, there was no way she could face him.
Derrick saw how Alanna was avoiding his gaze. "Vangelic, let me see your face." He walked behind her. "Turn around."
Alanna couldn't. She just couldn't. Derrick would get angry for seeing her beat up like this, and take it out on Master Phineas.
Derrick couldn't take it anymore. "Vangelic!" he yelled. He grabbed her shoulders, and swung her around to where she was facing him. Derrick's heart dropped when he saw how bruised she was.
"Vangelic, how could he do something like this to you?" Derrick yelled in fury. "Why wouldn't you let him? Even after he did this to you you still intend to fix his breakfast?" Derrick always had an anger issue. He began to pace back in forth. "Where is that pig? I'll make him pay for what he's done to you." Derrick began to storm off towards the front of the house.
"Derrick, no!" Alanna quickly grabbed onto Derrick's arm. "Please don't. Phineas has opened up his home to Safina and I and seven other children. Please don't ruin this for us. We have no where else to go."
Derrick sighed, and turned around. "You want to live with this guy?"
Alanna lowered her gaze. "It's not like I have a choice. All the kids without parents are sent here. What old slave master gets to do with us is up to him. I have no other home. You must not ruin this for me."
Derrick sighed and crossed his arms. "Fine, but I'm keeping my eye on you. I won't let you get hurt ever again."
"I'm glad you care," Alanna said, softly. She smiled. "But everything's going to be fine. I'll learn to live with how my life is sooner or later."
Derrick looked at the ground.
"I must finish preparing mister slave masters breakfast."
Derrick nodded his head once. "Right! Better go finish washing those tomatoes." Both the teens laughed. "Won't want to keep him waiting now would we."
Derrick took off, and Alanna got back to scrubbing the tomatoes.
