Monday. Wheein and Jimin were on their day off, leaving the Kim siblings to their tasks. Namjoon had notified Yoongi that he would arrive late as he had an important matter to handle. Despite the lack of three staff on the day, the boutique was noisy as usual, and there were no customers around. With Yoongi singing and Jungkook drumming the table.
Even Jiah could hear them from the office.
It was a rare occasion to see and hear Yoongi sing. According to Seokjin, something good might have gotten him in such a cheerful mood that his off, high pitch note could break the roof. It was amusing to see him wiggling his butt as he made his way to Hoseok’s office.
“Good morning, our Hoseok,” he cooed. He hopped and hopped with a smiling face, placing a booklet on the table.
The boss looked at him. “G-good morning,” he stuttered. “You sound… surprisingly cheerful today.”
“It’s more surprising that luck is on my side,” Yoongi said. “Hey, Lee Jiah. I want to treat you to food, say anything you want. Take it as a thank you token from me for taking care of our Hoseok.”
“And the fact that you’re treating my assistant is making you extraordinarily creepy,” Hoseok muttered. “Our Hoseok? Cringe."
“Uhh… An Iced Americano would be fine,” Jiah buzzed.
“Ey! Just coffee?” Yoongi asked and the girl in a high bun awkwardly nodded. “I heard you like cakes. I’ll buy you one. What do you like?"
The woman buzzed again. “I-I like any cake," she said.
The older man snickered and said, “I’ll get you one with the shape of my heart.” He shaped a small heart with his finger, earning from the boss’ assistant an awkward laugh.
“And then blatantly flirts with my P.A,” Hoseok groused. “What’s with you today, hyung?” he asked before continued writing for his speech for the coming public party.
The man at the door snickered again, eyebrows wiggling as he fished out something from his denim jacket. “Ta-da!”
Both the boss and his assistant slid their sights to the small paper in the man’s grip.
Hoseok’s voice chimed through the office. “Lottery ticket?”
Yoongi bobbed his head up and down.
“I thought you stopped,” the red-haired man said.
“Indeed. Return to try my luck this time. I won! I feel… I feel handsome! Today is making me handsome.”
“Okay,” Hoseok said, flatly. Then, he murmured to himself, “he’s beginning to sound like Seokjin now that I'm scared."
While the 'surprisingly' cheerful man was about to say something to the boss, a loud cry broke through the corridor. The occupants of the office turned their heads toward the sound. However, when there were no signs of any approaching soul, they left the office.
Namjoon was seen struggling with a baby in his arms. Both of his shoulders carried a baby bag and his school bag. “Hyung,” he called Seokjin in the midst of the cry. Trouble drew his face. “Help me.”
Seokjin’s loud voice rang through the premise, scolding, “You never tell us you have a child!”
Namjoon emphasized, “This is not my child!”
**********
The baby boy settled down in Jiah’s arms. Lips pouting over the pacifier, baby bottle in small hands, and doe eyes staring at her before scanning the place.
All of them gathered at the boss’ office, listening to Namjoon explain. Yoongi leaned on the table, arms crossed. Hoseok in his place. Seokjin sat beside Namjoon with his legs and arms crossed. Jisoo, Taehyung, and Jungkook were standing beside each other, on Jiah’s left and right.
He told them that he was having a group study with a few friends. Others left early while the baby’s father came later than planned. So he had to stay back at the restaurant they studied in, to teach and guide his friend regarding the lessons revised. Seeing him come with a baby was unexpected.
The baby’s mother was someone he didn’t know, but his friend had told him that she had to work part-time, leaving the father to look after their baby.
Namjoon was supposed to come to work just as his schedule had assigned him. But his friend left his baby behind as he ran out to answer his phone. So long that leaving Namjoon frantically searched for his friend. He tried to call his friend but to no avail. Therefore, he had no choice but to bring the baby with him to work.
Seokjin expressed that he thought Namjoon’s friend might have purposely left the baby with him as he might have known Amber owned an orphanage.
That made Jiah inspect the contents of the baby bag. No notes, only three pairs of clothes and a jumper. Baby formula, three small bottles, an extra pacifier, a rectangular handkerchief, wet wipes, and a few diapers. There was a teether and a baby toy too.
She announced, "There’s no sign that he's leaving the baby to Namjoon.” All eyes were on her. “No notes or anything formal in the bag.”
“Oh, lord,” Namjoon mumbled, slumping on the leather sofa. He rubbed his face in frustration. “I hate him!”
The eldest staff member commented, "I suppose I was right all along. You’re destined to look after kids.”
“You could have jinxed it,” Yoongi butted in.
“Oh, well! I might have the power to see the future," he replied. “Right, baby?” The baby in Jiah’s arms moaned and smiled at him before continuing to suck the pacifier for milk.
Upon lifting her head from the baby to Seokjin, she said, “I don’t think we have a baby soft mat to keep him safe.”
“Right,” Seokjin muttered. Glaring, he turned to Namjoon. “Hey, look what happened now! You’re turning Jiah into a babysitter.”
“Don’t point your fingers at me! He’s just as big as our Saekang. I can’t risk leaving a baby with strangers,” the man with spectacles said, his voice shrinking at the end.
All grew quiet before Taehyung announced, “I can help Jiah!” A hand raised with a boxy grin on his face.
Seokjin raised an eyebrow as he said, “But you have customer service to manage.”
“It’s Monday. Usually, there aren't many issues and orders to take note of," Taehyung said. He looked at the baby and Jiah, asking, “Is he sleeping?”
Jiah shook her head in response. At that moment, the baby had finished his milk. Slowly, she sat the baby up on her lap and patted his small back. Everyone was watching her patting him until he burped. They seemed to be fascinated and she noticed that. She explained, “Sit a baby up after feeding. A baby needs to burp after we feed them or else the thing they consumed will build up in their digestive system and they’ll choke or puke.”
Her boss mumbled, “That’s why Saekang puked on Seokjin hyung last time.”
“She didn’t puke!” Seokjin remarked. "She... is it puke if it's just a bit?" he asked.
The former pediatric nurse answered, “It’s a puke too because you fed her too much.” She gave him an awkward chuckle. “But there’s the difference between ‘fed too much’ puke and ‘forget to help baby burp’ puke.”
Some of them nodded while others shaped an 'O' in their mouth.
Yoongi chuckled and said, “That comes from a former nurse. Used to be an intern but still –” he shrugged. “For a girl who received so much knowledge as an intern. That’s amazing. I don’t regret hiring you.”
Jiah beamed and mumbled a ‘thank you.’ Then, she returned to entertain the baby. The baby seemed so fond of her that he couldn’t stop squealing and smiling when he looked at her. Her heart fluttered when she saw the tiny creature on her lap. It had been a while since she heard the cute, tiny squeals.
While Jisoo and Jungkook excused themselves when they heard customers coming, the rest stayed. The grown-up men were quiet, watching the woman talking in a high-pitched tone with the baby. The baby blabbered in return. As Yoongi and Namjoon ended up staring somewhere else, she could have sworn that she caught Seokjin staring, amazed.
She lifted her head to look at him, but he quickly turned his gaze to the baby and softly smiled. Then, she turned to look at Hoseok. He was staring at the baby too, but later, he shifted his gaze to her. He displayed a light smile for her and she smiled back. While she continued to play with the baby again, a question entered her mind.
“Oh, Namjoon. What’s his name?” she questioned.
The mentioned man lifted his head off the leather sofa’s backrest, breaking his stare from the ceiling, and shifted to Jiah. Then, he groaned, slumping his head back on the backrest again. “Only know his surname,” he drawled.
This was becoming troublesome, she thought. But knowing the father’s name would be enough at this moment. It was wise to check with the police station if the father didn't contact Namjoon within twenty-four hours.
Yoongi commented, “Don’t bother with the name. Let’s keep calling him ‘ah-ga’ (baby). The father will look for you. To take his baby back.” All of a sudden, he stood straight with a grin. “I’m buying you kids snacks! What do you want?”
“Hoddeok*!” Namjoon said.
“Fish carp bread,” Hoseok said without looking.
Next was Seokjin. “Buy me some sour gummies.”
And Taehyung. “Potato chips!”
And he turned to Jiah. “You’re buying me a cake, remember?”
“Noted!” Yoongi chirped. Giggling, he looked at his silver wristwatch. One of Namjoon’s eyebrows arched at that. The ‘extraordinarily’ cheerful man added, "I'm taking a break now. I’ll come back with your snacks.” Then, he turned himself, marching out of the room.
“Don’t forget my sister and Jungkook too!” the oldest one said.
Still with that grin, the curly, crimp-haired man saluted. “Yes, sir!” And disappeared into the main area. His loud voice of asking Jisoo and Jungkook reached the office.
“What’s wrong with Yoongi?” Namjoon questioned as he looked at his boss.
Shrinking, Hoseok said, “Don’t ask me.”
Therefore, Namjoon turned his head to Seokjin.
“I don’t know,” the broad-shouldered man sighed. “I don’t know which quirky spirit possessed him nor what food he had mistakenly eaten.”
