Reedemption
"Easy now."
Patricia took in the early morning fresh air as she held on tight to Angelo, helping him take one more step into the garden. She didn't pay any attention to the chirping sounds of the birds but she did take note of the sweet smell of Daisies that replaced the air the moment she got right in.
It had been a miracle the way Angelo could even afford to go out on a walk. She still remembered walking into his room that morning to find him trying to struggle to get up from his bed right after the nurses had taken his samples. It was even weirder that he was suddenly requesting to take a stroll in the garden.
"Oh be careful," he told her, also watching her and making sure that she was safe too. Angelo could imagine how exhausting it must have been for her to care for him like she did. He couldn't bear the thought of her falling to the ground because she was too busy caring for him to notice the stone in front of her.
"You know you really don't have to do this." Angelo said for the hundredth time as he tried to take a seat on the long bench, being as gentle as he could. .
"I already told you, besides being a little dizzy from all the tests, I feel completely fine."
He could see how she shrugged her shoulders and pouted her lips as she raised her head to look into his eyes. She couldn't believe he could say words like that to her.
"Well I wouldn't have to do any of this if that wife of yours cared enough to be here for you."
Angelo exhaled as a weak smile covered his face. He didn't exactly like it when she was fussy, but he had to admit, he liked that she cared that much.
"You know, wanting to control the company, I understand, but acting like she cares one day and then she doesn't the next, that one I can't agree with" She went on
Angelo laughed nervously.
If only she knew the heartless woman he had married. He thought to himself, if only she knew.
Patricia exhaled, bringing herself to sit right beside him.
"it's not funny Angelo. She's supposed to be here, it doesn't matter if it's for good press or not, she should be here."
Angelo scoffed.
"Are you tired of being here?" He pouted.
"Of course not." She frowned. He raised a brow to tease before she rolled her eyes. "You know what I mean Angelo." She was a bit nervous, she tucked the strands of hair on her face behind her ear.
"Stop doing that. You know I'd rather be here than be anywhere else." She slowly reached for his hands and rubbed them with hers, they were so warm. Angelo buried his gaze on their warm hands, it had been such a long time since they were like that, since he felt her that way. He had almost forgotten what it felt like to have her hands on his or in.
"You don't have to be scared Angelo, or worried. Nothing is going to happen to you. I would never let anything happen to you."
He raised his gaze to meet hers, faked smile and all. He sniffed.
"I'm not scared." He told her, pulling his hands from hers and placing them on hers "on the contrary, I have a huge feeling that I'm not going to die yet."
He slowly took his hands away.
"It's strange but I woke up this morning feeling- different."
Patricia furrowed her brows at him. She got that he was trying to be pessimistic but there was a look in his eyes that wasn't there before. She couldn't explain it.
She exhaled and leaned closer to him.
"Of course," she said "You're not going to die Angelo, we'd find a way to-"
He shook his head.
"No, no." He told her, she didn't understand him the way the wanted her to. "That's not it, I feel different," he looked her in her eyes. "It's weird but I feel completely normal, healthy-"
"Angelo-" she had a look of pity in her eyes.
"Patricia, something is different. I had this weird dream last night, I felt someone right beside me. I can't explain it. She felt real and then she didn't at the same time-"
"There was no one beside you yesterday Gelo." She told him. "You had no guests-"
"You don't understand." He shut his eyes to find the right words. He was getting frustrated. "This isn't about guests; I know what I saw-"
"Mr Trusk?"
Angelo paused for a while, Patricia too. He raised his head to look behind Patricia, leaving his gaze at the man in a long white coat that stood right behind them with a huge smile on his face.
Patricia turned immediately too while Angelo sprung to his feet and stretched his hand to the man as he walked closer to him.
She watched how the doctor took Angelo's hands and shook them.
"You look a lot better today." He said, fixating his eyes on Angelo like he was examining him with his eyes.
"I feel better too. Whatever drug it was you guys gave to me, I can say it's pretty effective."
"And your wife?"
He looked around hoping to see Anna.
Angelo frowned a little.
"She isn't here yet. She had somethings to do at the office." He said "Is there anything you need to tell me?"
Angelo furrowed his brows when he noticed how consistent the look of surprise and disbelief was in his eyes .
The doctor frowned a little. He turned to Patricia, showing concern of if her presence was appropriate for the conversation he wanted them to have.
"Can I talk to you for a minute Angelo?" He settled his gaze back on Angelo.
"Um-" Angelo needed a minute. He turned to Patricia then back to the doctor. He exhaled. "It's fine, Patricia is family. You can say whatever it is you have to, I trust her."
The doctor took a minute, still trying to make sure he was okay with what he had heard. He exhaled and returned his gaze to Angelo.
"Something has changed in your diagnosis Angelo."
Angelo narrowed his gaze on the tall white bearded man just as Patricia leaned closer so she could listen better.
"What is it? What do you mean by change? I don't - I don't understand -"
"What I'm trying to say is, after we ran some other tests earlier this morning , we noticed that there has been some kind of restoration in your kidneys, as a matter of fact, it's too much of a shock, that it's almost as if our initial prognosis was wrong. You are perfectly fine."
"Huh?" Patricia didn't understand what she had just heard.
" W-w-wait a minute. " Angelo shut his eyes and opened it, trying to wrap his head around everything the doctor was saying. Patricia too.
"You're saying I don't need a kidney transplant anymore? That I'm fine?"
The man exhaled. He didn't know what else to say:
" So what? He just got healed? " Patricia asked?
"What are you saying doctor? We both heard you, you said it was impossible to cure him without a transplant. Are you saying the hospital fooled us? Gave us a wrong diagnosis to begin with?"
"We ran multiple tests before our first diagnosis, and it's the same with this time. It's hard to say that our initial diagnosis was wrong because it wasn't, I just- it's hard to explain, I wish I knew myself Miss Adams, but that's not just it-"
He turned to Angelo.
"According to the results of our tests, Mr Trusk, you no longer have any trace of FMF. It's almost like a miracle happened over night."
" What? "
Patricia could not explain the shock she felt.
Angelo just stood still for a minute, he couldn't move. He could barely even think clearly. Everything was happening so fast, almost like a miracle.
"I don't- are you sure? Don't you think you should run more tests?"
" We did, three times. The results came out the same. We could run a few more tests but I'm not sure there would be a difference. However, I would suggest that we keep you here for a few days, to monitor the situation."
Angelo could feel the world spin around him. He could hear his own heartbeat elated by the news.
"I don't know how it happened Mr Trusk but the heavens sure do love you."
Angelo could hide his excitement anymore. He let himself smile genuinely as he took the doctors hand.
"Congratulations." He told him. "I would see you inside."
Angelo was too suprised to make a move. He didn't even notice the doctor leave before Patricia spun him around
"Angelo, can you believe it?"
Patricia asked turning him around to face her.
"You're not dying."
She couldn't hide her excitement either. She held his hands.
"You're fine.".
Angelo scoffed.
"And you don't have that illness anymore too. I can't - i can't believe it. It's like a miracle."
Angelo looked at her for a while and then exhaled. It was obvious he was trying to wrap his head around what had happened. He slowly fell back into the bench.
"Why? What's wrong?" Patricia joined him slowly, leaving her gaze on him.
"I'm- I'm not sick?" He had tears lingering in his eyes
Patricia shook her head, almost in tears
"You're not sick anymore."
"H-how is it poss-" Angelo shut his eyes for a while, pushing the tears that threatened to fall back.
He opened his eyes slowly and scoffed faintly at realization.
"I'm not sick" he turned to her. "Did you hear that Trisha? I'm not going to die."
"You're not going to die " she confirmed his words to him. "You're perfectly fine Angelo." She traced her hands down his arms till she placed them in his "it's almost like a miracle but you're fine now."
"Oh my God-" his hands were shaking, his voice too.
He kept his gaze on Patricia. She was crying already and he could see that.
"You're crying?"
He placed his hand on her face trying to clean away her tears
"No, it's nothing" she tried to turn away slightly "I'm just excited that's all."
Angelo exhaled. He couldn't believe it, he didn't understand how excited she was but he could understand how frightened it must have been for her, to watch him struggle and fight for his life.
He cleaned off what was left of her tears
"I know this hasn't been easy for you too Trisha. " He exhaled looking into her eyes. It made her red with embarrassment as she tried to look away.
"Hey look at me ,"
He placed a hand beneath her jaw and pulled her face back to his till she had her eyes on him.
"Thank you " He told her
"Thank you for being there, thank you for never leaving my side."
Patricia sniffed. She didn't take her eyes off him.
"Didn't I tell you I was never going to leave you?" She asked him "it's me and you versus the world remember?"
Angelo chuckled. He sniffed, nodding his head too.
She was right and he knew it. Patricia had never left his side not once. For as long as he remembered, she was always there for him.
"It's me and you versus the world." He repeated
Patricia smiled. She couldn't hide her excitement anymore. She remembered how she had always struggled to get him to admit to those very words. She knew how he was always embarrassed to be so cheesy around her. Hearing those words for the first time from him melted her heart.
She pushed herself closer to him without even thinking and kissed him deeply. Her hold on him was too tight, tight enough to make sure he didn't resist. She really needed him, she wanted his kiss and what anyone thought about her didn't mean anything at that point.
This was the man of her dreams, and sharing moments like this was all she had ever hoped for.
She kissed him deeply while Angelo stood there for a second, thinking if it was okay to resist till he actually did.
He stared at her, too shocked to speak.
"Patricia-"
"Please," Patricia started shutting her eyes and trying to push back the tears that hung in them. "I know what you're going to say, but please don't say it."
Angelo exhaled
He didn't know what to say to her. He wondered if it was okay to just let it go, to keep leading her on like that even after they had both heard such a good news.
It was like she knew what he wanted to say, she could read him like a book but she knew it would break her if he did.
"I don't want to hear it." She placed a hand over her ears to block herself from listening. She looked away too. "I don't want to hear it." She couldn't stop crying
Angelo exhaled. He didn't know what to do with her. He wasn't exactly sure telling her he couldn't continue being with her that way would put her in a sane state.
He pushed himself forward and pulled her into his embrace. He let her cry to her hearts content, he let her let it all out.
