Namjoon frowned, not recognizing the number that had just texted him.
He figured someone had a wrong number and decided to ignore it.
He shoved his phone back in his pocket as he hurried into the bustling halls of his college, instantly getting swallowed up by the crowd of students who were hurrying to their classes for the day.
-
"Yoongi, are you up?" Seokjin pounded on his younger brothers door. "You have to take Gukkie to Dr. Kim's today!"
Yoongi groaned, pulling his pillow over his head. "What, why can't you? You always do!"
"Because I'm filling in for someone at work this morning and won't have time to drive him there." Seokjin called through the door. "Come on, I already got him dressed and fed, the least you can do is take him there."
Yoongi muttered into his pillow.
He loved his younger brother, he truly did.
But not at six in the morning.
Reluctantly, he slid out of bed, yawning and messing up his hair with both hands as he shuffled to the bathroom.
He had morning classes, starting at seven, and he was annoyed he was losing that extra hour of sleep.
He brushed his hair and teeth before returning to his bedroom to change his clothes.
Finally he opened his door and walked down the stairs to the living room, where his little brother Jungkook was sitting on the floor in front of the TV, his Bambi eyes wide as he watched the cartoon characters learn about friendship.
He went to the kitchen, where Seokjin was packing Jungkook's lunch in his little yellow lunchbox.
"There you are, here." Seokjin pushed the box into Yoongi's chest. "You know the way there, right?"
"Yes." Yoongi mumbled, still tired.
"Good, get there at six thirty and no later." Seokjin said.
"I know."
"I can pick him back up around three, so don't worry about that." Seokjin babbled, checking his pockets to make sure he had everything. "Call me if you need anything, and make sure to thank Dr. Kim for doing this for us."
Yoongi just watched his older brother walk to the living room and kneel down in front of Jungkook.
"Goodbye, Koo." Seokjin hugged him. "Gi-gi is gunna take you to Dr. Kim's office today, okay? But I'll be there to pick you up."
Jungkook giggled as he hugged Seokjin. "Okay, Jinnie!"
Yoongi watched, holding back another yawn.
Seokjin took out his car keys. "I'm serious, Yoongi, don't be late."
"I won't." Yoongi complained.
"And be home by five." Seokjin said, walking to the door.
"Six." Yoongi bargained.
"Five thirty and not a minute later or I'm cutting the cords on your charger and headphones." Seokjin warned, and then he was gone.
Yoongi stuck his tongue out at the door, before sitting down beside Jungkook.
"Look, Gi!" Jungkook pointed to the TV. "She shared her apple with her friend! That's good!"
"Mhm." Yoongi said sleepily, closing his eyes as he rested his head on Jungkook's shoulder.
Jungkook was sixteen years old- physically.
But mentally, he was around four years old.
He had a disorder so rare, it didn't even have a name yet.
His body kept growing like normal, but a traumatic incident happened that stunted his mind. He would grow fixated on things, like any normal little kid would. He had a hard time remembering things and was over emotional. He quickly grew infatuated with random things, sometimes even people, at first sight.
Sometimes he had 'episodes' where he would just suddenly seize up, his eyes looking at something far away.
The family doctor, Dr. Kim Taehyung, had been with them since before Yoongi was even born. He had been friends of Yoongi's parents before their deaths, and volunteered to babysit Jungkook while Yoongi was at college and Seokjin was at work.
Seokjin was twenty three and worked a full time and a part time job to help support his two younger brothers.
Yoongi felt bad, wanting to help Seokjin with financial things, but Seokjin refused, wanting Yoongi to focus only on his studies.
"You need to get a degree so you can get a good job." Seokjin told him.
Yoongi was twenty, and his real passion was music. But since there was no money behind producing songs unless you were famous, Yoongi couldn't afford to risk that one in a million chance.
So instead he was studying to be a doctor and hating every second of it.
All the money their parents had left them in their will was going to mortgage payments and Yoongi's tuition.
Dr. Kim was kind enough to babysit Jungkook for free, and give the boys medicine at a large discount for the boys, and the Min family was forever in the good mans debt.
"C'mon, Koo." Yoongi stood up. "We gotta start walking now if we're gunna get to Dr. Kim's on time."
Jungkook scrambled to his feet, grabbing his lunchbox and holding it to his chest. "Kimmy!"
"Yep, gunna go see Kimmy." Yoongi led Jungkook to the front door and sat him down. He pulled out Jungkook's shoes and helped the boy slide them on.
"Can you tie them yourself?" Yoongi asked, cocking his head.
Jungkook nodded, poking out his tongue as he set his lunchbox aside and worked on trying to knot the white laces.
He was only to seconds in when he suddenly froze, his eyes going wide.
Yoongi noticed immediately. "Jungkook? Jungkook?" He waved his hand in front of the boys face a few times, but Jungkook's pupils didn't follow the motion.
Yoongi sighed, taking the laces and tying the shoes for his little brother.
There was nothing to do when Jungkook had one of his episodes, but wait for it to pass. Yoongi didn't know what triggered them, they seemed to be random, but they only lasted a few moments usually. Sometimes they could last a few minutes, but never longer than that.
Thankfully, Jungkook blinked and came back to his senses a few seconds later. He glanced down at his shoes and beamed at the bows. "Jungkookie did?"
Yoongi nodded. "Yep, Jungkookie tied his shoes."
Giggling with happiness, Jungkook jumped to his feet and took his brothers hand as Yoongi led them outside.
It was chilly out since it was still early, and the streetlights were still on.
"Stay by me." Yoongi said when Jungkook started skipping. He held the younger boy back.
Jungkook didn't seem to mind, his fingers curling around Yoongi's. "Almost pumpkin time!"
"Yep, it's almost Halloween." Yoongi said.
Orange, red and yellow leaves skittered around their feet as the breeze blew. It was only September, but already Halloween decorations were out. Pumpkins sat on front porches and wreathes made from hay hung on front doors.
"Can carve pumpkins like last year?" Jungkook asked, swinging his lunchbox in his other hand.
"Yeah, we can do that."
Jungkook babbled all the way to the doctors house, which thankfully was only a few blocks down the road.
Yoongi helped Jungkook march up the steps and knocked on the door.
A few moments later it opened and Dr. Kim Taehyung smiled down at them.
"Good morning boys, you're earlier than usual today. I'm still in my pajamas." He chuckled, stepping aside so they could enter.
"Sorry, I guess Jin forgot to call you. He had to pick up an extra shift today so I had to bring Jungkook over before classes started." Yoongi said, letting go of Jungkook's hand.
The boy rushed to the living room, where Taehyung kept toys and activity books out for him.
"Ah, no problem. Could you stay with Jungkook for a minute while I go change? Then I'll take it from there."
"Sure." Yoongi stepped inside and sat on a chair by the table, pulling out his phone.
It was quiet while Jungkook practiced writing his numbers and Yoongi scrolled through his social media feeds.
Finally Taehyung came back down. "Did you want anything to eat before you go, Yoongi?"
Yoongi shook his head, sitting up. "No thanks, I can't eat this early."
Taehyung walked to his cabinet and pulled down an orange prescription bottle. "Jungkook, come here please. It's time for your medicine."
Jungkook pouted, not looking up from his workbook. "No like medicine."
"I know you don't but you have to take it." Taehyung said, dumping out two small purple pills.
Jungkook scowled. "Nuh."
"Jungkook, you listen to Dr. Kim." Yoongi scolded.
Jungkook finally put down his pencil and pouted at them. "Taste bad!"
"How about I crush them up and put them in your smoothie?" Taehyung offered. "Then you won't have to taste it."
"Banana smoothie?" Jungkook perked up.
"It can be banana, if you want." Taehyung nodded, getting to work.
Yoongi checked the time. "I gotta go or I'll be late. Seokjin will be here to pick him up at the usual time."
"Sounds good. Have a good day, Yoongs!" Taehyung called after him as he crushed the pills up.
Yoongi gave Jungkook a goodbye hug and kiss before hurrying out the door to the bus stop.
He plugged his headphones in as he climbed onto the warm bus and took a seat by the window.
He leaned against the seat as he watched the scenery pass, wondering when his life was going to finally change.
-
Namjoon slid into his desk at the back of the room just as the bell rang, sighing.
As he pulled out his textbooks, he heard the kids next to him talking in a huddle.
"Did you hear what happened last night?" One whispered.
"No, what?" Another asked, eyes already wide.
"Another murder." The first kid said, pulling it out to show her. "Look, the homeless dude was stabbed and his guts all fell out!"
She shrieked, hiding behind her hair. "Don't show me that! Gross! Oh my God- I'm gunna throw up!"
He chuckled, taking his phone back. "If I was ever gunna kill someone, that's how I would do it. Just a quick stab and yank the knife downwards, simple as that. It was in an alley at like one in the morning, so of course no one saw a thing. This is the second stabbing in a week, the cops around here sure suck. I wonder if-"
"Stop talking about it!" She punched his shoulder. "I'm gunna freak out!"
Namjoon didn't pay attention to them, not caring.
So what if there was a killer on the loose? Finals were coming up and if Namjoon failed them, he was a more of a dead man than that guy who got stabbed.
Class started a few moments later, and all thoughts of a serial killer flew out the window as the students in the biology class got to work.
The door opened and Yoongi rushed in, quickly taking his seat.
His face was flushed from running the whole way in here, and the teacher gave him a disapproving glare for interrupting her lesson, but said nothing.
Class passed by uneventfully, and Namjoon's head was full of the lesson about hemoglobin's as he hurried to his next class that he almost didn't feel his phone vibrate with another new text.
