5| RATS ON A TRAIN
The morning began with an air of excitement as Adam, Bree and Chase geared up for their next round of training. Leo and Harper were particularly eager, standing at the control panel beside Mr. Davenport, waiting to see how the bionic siblings would handle the next challenge.
The Lab was buzzing with energy as the bionic siblings wore their red, grey and black training suits, looking every bit the part of high-tech superheroes.
"Okay, guys. The next phase of your training is handling extreme climates." Mr. Davenport announced. "So we'll frost Chase, bake Bree, and submerge Adam. That's not part of the training, I just got one of those carnival tanks and I can't wait to try it out." Chase stepped into his capsule, grinning with anticipation. "Okay, Chase, I'm setting your tube on 'Antarctic'. If it gets to be too much, just give me a sign."
"Bring it!" Chase challenged confidently with a wide smile.
Mr. Davenport activated the capsule, a loud noise filled the room, signaling the start of the simulation.
"Hey, that's not fair. I want to be abused by weather." Leo complained, clearly jealous of all the attention the bionic siblings were getting.
Bree scoffed. "Leo, if you really want to be abused, try standing over here next to Adam's morning breath."
"I don't have morning breath." Adam protested instantly, then smiled. "It smells like that all day."
"I'm starting to think you're the only normal one in this family, Bree." Harper said honestly. Bree chuckled and nodded in agreement.
"Leo, these guys are genetically engineered to handle these kinds of climates. You're not." Mr. Davenport explained, cutting off Leo's complaints.
"I can handle extreme cold." Leo retorted confidently.
Harper raised an eyebrow. "Leo, you get brain freeze from chewing mint gum."
The whole group burst out laughing, leaving Leo scowling. Before he could come up with a retort, Mr. Davenport's phone rang and the mood quickly shifted to one of concern.
The inventor answered the phone, his face falling as he listened.
"Davenport? What?! Well, that's terrible!" He exclaimed, pacing around the room with Adam, Bree, Leo and Harper following him. "I mean, that's awesome. But that's terrible! I gotta do something."
With that, Mr. Davenport ended the call and put his phone back in his pocket with a worried expression.
"What's going on? What's so terrible?" Adam wondered.
"I created the world's fastest train, but now it's speeding out of control full of highly explosive nuclonium towards downtown Welkerville!" Mr. Davenport explained, his voice filled with a mix of excitement and alarm.
Bree furrowed her eyebrows. "Well, then what was awesome?"
"It's going like four-hundred miles an hour." Mr. Davenport exclaimed with a gleam in his eye. "My entire career is riding or perhaps crashing on this train!" He went over to his desk and began typing on the computer. "I don't understand it! My design was flawless!"
"So flawless you forgot to include an emergency brake?" Leo questioned, giving him a look.
"No." Mr. Davenport replied, pointing at his computer in frustration. "I never counted on the conductor dropping his papaya smoothie all over the controls and then jumping off the train."
Adam sighed. "Well, if I were to build a high-speed train, the first thing I would have put in was a cup holder. Oh! And one of those bumper stickers on the back that says, 'I break for cows'."
"When stuff like this happens, they always blame the scientist. This is human error. Scientists don't make mistakes." Mr. Davenport complained. Suddenly, there was a knock from behind, and they turned to see Chase completely frozen inside his capsule. The room fell silent for a moment before Mr. Davenport groaned in exasperation. "Chase... Now I have to explain the whole train story again."
"I'll get a blanket.." Harper offered, rushing upstairs to fetch one.
When Harper returned, she found Chase shivering and sitting on a stool by the cyber desk. She quickly wrapped the blanket around him, and she, Leo and Bree rubbed his shoulders to warm him up.
Adam sat at the computer desk, his fingers tapping rhythmically on the keyboard as Mr. Davenport left the room to retrieve something. The tension was mounting as everyone eagerly awaited the next step in the plan to stop the runaway train.
Mr. Davenport soon returned with a large duffle bag.
"The good news is, whenever I invent something, I always create a backup device to support it." He said, placing the large duffle bag onto the cyber desk.
"As opposed to just building it right the first time." Chase quipped.
"Ya know, I think I liked you better frozen." Mr. Davenport retorted before unzipping the duffle bag and pulled out a large metal device. "My Auxiliary Decelerator will stop anything- Ocean liners, freight trains, tanks, eighteen-wheelers, twelve-wheelers..."
"Does it stop unnecessarily long explanations?" Leo wondered. Harper nodded in agreement, amused.
"Apparently so." Mr. Davenport replied in a dull tone, glancing at Leo with a pointed look. "Only problem is, I can't figure out how to get it on the train."
Bree's eyes widened with excitement as she looked at Adam and Chase. "You guys thinkin' what I'm thinkin'?"
"Our first mission!" Chase and Bree exclaimed happily in unison.
"I want a pet pig!" Adam shouted.
Mr. Davenport shook his head in disbelief. "No, no, no, no. You are not prepared for this kind of mission. It is a highly volatile situation. Down the line-fingers crossed- there will be plenty of other horrible disasters."
"Yeah, but... you need to stop this train now." Chase pointed out, his tone serious. "And you need us to help you do it. Your career depends on it."
"Please, Mr. Davenport. This is what you trained us for." Bree pleaded.
"All right, you gotta leave the nest sometime." Mr. Davenport decided, a reluctant smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. His words sparked immediate cheer from the siblings. Their faces lit up with enthusiasm, and they couldn't wait to get started. "Okay, get in your capsules, guys. I can't believe I'm saying this... It's time to upgrade your mission suits."
The three bionic siblings cheered and rushed into their capsules.
"I hope you addressed the chafing problem." Adam said before entering his capsule, leaving Mr. Davenport, Leo and Harper to exchange puzzled glances.
As Adam, Bree and Chase settled into their capsules, Mr. Davenport pressed a button on the control panel, triggering the transformation sequence.
A glowing blue line appeared at the bottom of the capsules, and slowly, the chunky, red-and-black training suits the siblings had been wearing were replaced by sleek, form-fitting mission suits. They were still in the same color scheme, but the new suits looked far more advanced and professional—designed for agility and comfort.
"Wow. They look awesome." Harper said impressively.
"Sweet!" Adam cheered, admiring the new mission suit. "Ooh! I see you put in the seat warmers!"
"All right...." Mr. Davenport began, walking towards the cyber desk, followed by the eager teenagers. He pulled out a small yellow box from the duffle bag he had with him. "We'll be able to use these earpieces to communicate, and I'll monitor your progress on the train surveillance system. That way if you blow yourselves up in a fiery explosion, I can watch it unfold in glorious HD." Adam, Bree, Chase, Leo and Harper all shot him a disapproving look. "That came out wrong."
"We get our first mission!" Chase exclaimed, visibly excited.
"And we get to save lives!" Bree added, smiling brightly.
"Seriously, I want a pig!" Adam shouted.
Mr. Davenport, while handing out the earpieces, was suddenly interrupted by Leo, who had snuck in front of Adam and grabbed his earpiece. Harper shot Leo a disapproving look, clearly unimpressed with his antics.
"Leo!" Mr. Davenport scolded.
"What am I supposed to use- Two cans and a string?" Leo asked with raised eyebrows, not understanding why taking the earpiece was a problem.
Mr. Davenport sighed and crossed his arms, giving Leo a stern look. Leo reluctantly returned the earpiece to the cyber desk, frowning as he stood next to Harper, who was still giving him an annoyed look.
Just then, Tasha entered the lab, her usual cheerfulness in full force. "Well, your favorite news reporter just got their big break!"
"Linda Montieres?"
"Chip Spudner?"
"And Tom Constan with sports?"
"No, me!" Tasha responded excitedly, pointing to herself. "I am done reporting on singing dogs and babies who look like ex-presidents. The network finally gave me a real assignment. I'm covering a runaway train!"
Adam gasped in surprise. "No way! Ain't that a coinky-dink? Mr. Davenport-"
"Is, uh.... is, uh, so proud of you, honey." Mr. Davenport quickly interjected, trying to cover up the situation as he walked over to Tasha.
Tasha smiled at him. "Will you watch Leo? I have a train to catch."
"Absolutely." He said, gently guiding her toward the elevator. "And don't forget, be balanced and fair, collect all the facts, and blame the conductor. He's an idiot!"
Tasha chuckled and nodded before exiting, leaving Mr. Davenport to return to his spot behind the cyber desk where the teenagers were still gathered.
Leo, now visibly disappointed, frowned. "This stinks. Everybody gets to go on an adventure but me and Harper."
"Leo, just because you and Harper can't go on the train doesn't mean we can't have fun here." Mr. Davenport reassured him. "I'll pop in the Goober the Spunky Caboose DVD for you guys."
"Mr. Davenport, Leo's fourteen and I'm fifteen." Harper corrected, clearly not thrilled with the idea of watching a children's show.
"Okay, then pop it in yourselves." Mr. Davenport replied, rolling his eyes. He then turned to the bionic siblings. "Come on, guys, we don't have a lot of time. We gotta get you in your gear."
With that, Adam, Bree and Chase followed Mr. Davenport out of the lab, eager to prepare for their mission. Meanwhile, Harper feeling hungry, decided to grab a snack. She walked towards the elevator to get some popcorn.
••••
Twenty minutes later, Harper found herself in the elevator, clutching a bowl of popcorn, while Mr. Davenport had already flown Adam, Bree and Chase to the runaway train in his helicopter.
As the elevator dinged, Harper glanced up to see the doors slide open. She stepped into the Lab, bowl of popcorn in hand and immediately noticed that Leo was nowhere to be seen.
She searched the house but found no sign of him. It was as if he had vanished into thin air, causing her heart to race.
"Mr. Davenport, have you seen Leo?" Harper asked, returning to the Lab with a hint of worry in her voice.
Mr. Davenport, who had been glued to the computer screen, barely looked up as he pointed in frustration. "He's right there!"
Harper's gaze followed his finger and landed on the screen, where she saw Leo- on the runaway train. She gasped, her popcorn almost spilling as she set the bowl down. Without thinking, she grabbed an earpiece from the desk and switched it on.
"Leo!" She exclaimed, glaring at the screen. "You joined the mission?"
Leo looked directly into the camera, completely unphased. "Oh... Hi Harper."
"This is a new low, Leo." She muttered under her breath.
"Which way is the dining car? I'd like to get a bite to eat before we save the town of Welkerville!" Leo announced, striking a dramatic, heroic pose.
Harper groaned, her frustration mounting as she ran a hand through her hair. She slumped down in the chair, knowing this was going to be trouble.
Meanwhile, Mr. Davenport paced anxiously around the lab. Harper turned just in time to see Chase rummaging through the duffle bag, pulling out a bundle of rope.
"Leo, what are you doing here?!" Bree's voice echoed from the earpiece. She grabbed the rope, looking confused and a little concerned.
"Joining the mission. I want to be like you guys!" Leo replied cheerfully, like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
"But Leo, you're not like us." Adam said bluntly. "And I don't mean that in a bad way, we just have really cool, super-fun features, and you don't."
"Uh, Leo, where's the Decelerator we need to stop this train?" Chase asked urgently.
"You mean the pointy metal thing that was poking me in the butt?" Leo questioned, his tone unsure.
"It's right here!" Mr. Davenport sneered, now practically fuming as he held the device. "Leo, I am supposed to be watching you!"
Leo turned to the camera again, looking smug. "And you are... in glorious HD!"
"Leo, if you don't make it back, Tasha will be devastated. I'm not going to try to make a life-size Leo sculpture!" Harper shouted at her best friend.
"Mr. Davenport, what are we gonna do?" Bree asked, her voice shaky as she looked at the screen, clearly worried about the mission's success.
"I'm going to get Leo. If he blows up on that train, I'm gonna have to get Tasha a puppy! I'll bring the Decelerator in my high-speed helicopter." Mr. Davenport declared before letting out a small chuckle. "Wow! How many guys can say that they have chased their high-speed train in their high-speed helicopter? I'm awesome!"
"Mr. Davenport, take the Decelerator and bring back Leo!" Harper snapped, her patience running thin.
"Fine. You stay here and monitor." He said before rushing out of the lab.
"I've got nothing else to do anyway." She muttered to herself, slumping further in her chair.
"Okay, so I downloaded the train's route before we left the house. Let me pull it up so I can calculate how much time we have left." Chase said, his fingers tapping his temple. A holographic map appeared in front of them as he analyzed the train's route. "Oh, no! Guys! There's only a two percent chance that we can save the train! And if the train goes, we go!" He wrapped his arms around a giant metal container for comfort. "Brace yourselves! Bionic people do not explode well."
"Chase, relax. I mean, there's a possibility we can survive the crash." Bree reassured him
"Oh. Leo won't." Adam stated bluntly.
"Oh. Right. Never mind." Bree corrected herself awkwardly.
"I'm sorry you guys have to see me like this." Chase apologized to the team. "I know you think of me as your ultra-competent, unwavering, fearless leader."
"Not really." Adam responded without missing a beat.
"Yeah, just the opposite, actually." Bree added. Chase looked dejected by their responses and Harper couldn't help but feel bad for him. "Chase, look, everything is gonna be fine."
"Yeah! I mean, Big D is on his way in his high-speed helicopter." Leo reminded them, his voice still upbeat.
"But... what if we can't attach the device? What if the sudden stop causes the train to tip! What if Mr. Davenport gets caught in a traffic jam?!" Chase babbled nervously, pacing up and down the train.
Harper furrowed her eyebrows in confusion. "In a helicopter?"
Chase squinted his eyes, looking seriously at the camera. "There could be birds."
"That drives cars? I don't think so." Adam said.
"Chase, you're overthinking this!" Leo said, placing a hand on his shoulder. "The answer is simple. If Sally's on a train traveling at a certain speed, X, she's gonna reach the curve at a certain time, Y. All we need to do is multiply X by Y to find out if we have enough track left to stop."
"Leo, did you go through my seventh grade math journal?" Harper wondered, recalling a similar problem from a couple of years ago.
"Maybe....."
"Okay...." Chase trailed off and motioned to the tanks of nuclonium beside the wall. "But what if Sally is sitting on enough nuclonium to reduce an entire city to a stain?"
"Then Sally should have taken the bus." Leo replied bluntly.
••••
Harper reclined in the chair, legs propped up on the desk, leisurely munching on her popcorn as she watched the unfolding chaos of the mission in high definition. The tension was palpable on the screen, but from the comfort of the Lab, she couldn't help but find some amusement in it all.
Leo sat perched on a random box, nonchalantly watching Adam, Bree and Chase pace back and forth, clearly anxious as they waited for Mr. Davenport to arrive with the crucial Decelerator.
"Oh, I know!" Leo suddenly exclaimed, snapping his fingers. He had everyone's attention instantly. "In the movie Sparkman and the Train from Tomorrow, Sparkman hops in front of the train and stops it with his pinky." He looked over at Adam and nudged his arm "Just do that."
Adam gave him a deadpan stare. "Leo, I don't have that ability."
"Well, then you need an upgrade."
Before anyone could respond, a honk sounded from above, echoing through the train.
"Guys! Mr. Davenport's here! He's really here! I told you we'd be fine." Chase beamed, a glint of hope lighting up his face.
"No, you didn't."
"I don't remember that."
"Yeah, just the opposite, actually."
Chase shot them all an annoyed glare before bolting to the hatch. The others followed suit, peering up through the opening to see Mr. Davenport piloting the helicopter directly above the train.
"Okay, I'm gonna drop the Decelerator now! Make sure you catch it! It's very delicate!" Mr. Davenport called down.
"Okay!" Adam acknowledged, his arms poised and ready.
"Pretend it's a baby!" Mr. Davenport added.
"Okay!" Adam yelled, arms still outstretched as he waited. But when Mr. Davenport released the Decelerator, it didn't float gently into Adam's hands. Instead, they heard a series of loud clanks as the device rattled across the top of the train, clearly missing its intended target. "Pretend I caught it!"
"For the record, when I fill out the incident report, I'm putting human error!" Mr. Davenport exclaimed, his voice tinged with frustration.
"You know, none of this would have happened had you just put in a cup holder." Harper said casually, tossing a piece of popcorn in the air and catching it in her mouth.
Leo gulped nervously, his face visibly pale. "Okay, this just went from comic book cool to real life terrifying! My new mission is to get the heck off this train!"
"Okay, we're gonna have to abort the mission!" Mr. Davenport declared over the comms, his voice full of resignation. "Never liked Welkerville anyways. All right, I'm gonna drop down the rope ladder. Everybody up- Leo first!"
"You don't have to tell me twice." Leo said eagerly, walking toward the ladder that was lowered through the hatch. "Come on, guys, let's go home and have some cocoa!" He was about to climb up when he noticed that Adam, Bree and Chase hadn't moved. "Guys? Cocoa!"
"We can't quit now."
"If we do, it means we failed our first mission."
"Yeah, we've been training our whole lives for this moment. We're not giving up."
"Come on, this thing's about to crash." Leo reminded them, urgency creeping into his tone.
"Leo, they've been preparing for this for a long time, they can't just give up." Harper said, her voice filled with a quiet but determined understanding.
She knew how much this mission meant to Adam, Bree and Chase- not just for the success of the mission itself, but for everything they had worked for. They had trained for years, pushing themselves beyond limits that most people couldn't even imagine. Harper understood that for them, giving up wasn't just about failing this mission- it was about everything they had sacrificed to get here.
Leo turned to the camera. "But we've done everything humanly possible."
"But that's just it. Mr. Davenport made us superhuman because when all else fails, we can't." Chase explained as he wrapped his arms around his brother and sister.
"Yeah. We put ourselves in danger for the sake of humanity." Bree added as she glanced at Leo.
"Well, if you guys aren't going, I'm not going either." Leo insisted, his voice firm with a mixture of defiance and determination.
"Leo, this is too dangerous for you." Bree said in concern.
Leo scoffed. "Please. My middle name is Danger."
"I thought it was Francis." Adam interjected with a puzzled expression.
"It's pronounced Danger." Leo clarified quickly.
Harper shook her head. "You're an idiot."
"Leo, we are running out of time! And by we, I mean you. Get up the ladder now!" Mr. Davenport's voice crackled urgently through the earpiece.
"I'm coming!" Leo yelled as he quickly scanned the train. His eyes caught sight of a first-aid kit on the ground. In a split-second decision, he grabbed it, clipped it on the ladder and tugged on it. "I'm climbing up the ladder right now! Pull me up!"
As the helicopter's winch whined, the ladder and first-aid kit were hoisted up into the safety of the helicopter. Leo then slammed his hand on a button and the hatch above the train closed with a swift, metallic snap.
Chase's eyes widened in disbelief. "Leo, are you crazy! What are you doing?!"
"We're all in this together. I may not be superhuman, but that doesn't mean we can't be a hero." Leo explained, looking into the camera and smiled at Harper.
"I'm not physically there." Harper reminded.
"You're here virtually and mentally." He said, his voice full of warmth and gratitude.
"A first-aid kit?" Mr. Davenport asked, his voice crackling through the comms, sounding utterly confused. "Leo, when I open this thing you better be inside! What do you guys think you're doing?"
Chase grinned. "We're completing our mission."
Without missing a beat, Adam, Bree, Chase and Leo all simultaneously pulled out their earpieces, tossing them aside with the same determination. Harper discarded hers in the nearby bin. They were no longer tethered to the mission in the way they had been before. The time for hesitation had passed. It was all or nothing now.
Chase stared intently at the holographic map projected in front of him, his fingers tapping his temple to make the display shift. The tension in the air was palpable as the clock was ticking down.
"Okay, we have approximately three minutes to slow this thing down before it hits the turn and flies off the tracks." Chase informed.
"Okay, let's think. Objects in motion remain in motion unless an external force blocks it." Leo said.
"So what could block our path?" Bree pondered.
"Oh, I got it! We can put the nuclonium tanks in front of the train!" Adam suggested.
Bree shot him a pointed look. "Then the train would blow up."
"Thus stopping it." Adam clarified as though that made sense.
"If only Wile E. Coyote was here. He'd have a giant rubber band he could tie around two trees to stop this thing." Leo said, thinking out loud.
Chase, who had been silently considering the options, suddenly perked up. His eyes widened as a thought clicked into place. "Wait a minute. Leo, that's it! The Reid-Bennet Bridge is 19.8 miles ahead. Our rappelling ropes are unbreakable. So if Bree ties them together-"
"I could use my super speed to run ahead and wrap around the bridge supports!" Bree interjected, her excitement rising as she caught on.
"And then Adam can use his super strength to hold the rope and stop the train!" Chase added, already imagining the plan coming together.
"Let's do this thing!"
Harper watched in anticipation as Adam, Bree and Chase rushed toward the side door of the train, moving with practiced precision. Leo, however, seemed much less sure of himself as he nervously glanced down at his hands, trying to calm his jittery nerves.
"Did I mention that Wile E. Coyote dies in every episode?" He said with a weak smile, trying to inject a little humor into the tension.
"Get the bag." Adam demanded.
Leo hurriedly grabbed the duffle bag from the floor and joined his bionic siblings at the door. He handed the rope to Bree as Adam flung open the side door. In the chaos, the bag slipped from Leo's grasp, tumbling out of the train.
"Can we chalk that up to human error?" Leo wondered, squinting his eyes against the wind whipping through the opening.
Bree glanced around, making sure the coast was clear. In a blur of super-speed, she dashed to the bridge supports ahead, looping the unbreakable ropes securely around them.
"Okay, the rope's secure." Bree confirmed when she returned on the train. As she handed the end of the rope to Adam, she raised something she had picked up along the way. "Also, look at what the train did to this penny!"
"Oh!" Adam, Chase and Leo said in unison, reacting to the strange sight with surprise of the flattened, battered coin.
"And this squirrel!" She added nonchalantly, holding up the unfortunate rodent by its tail, causing the boys to recoil in horror.
"Aah!" Adam, Chase and Leo cried out, their faces twisted in disgust.
Bree, unfazed by the dead squirrel, tossed it onto the train's tracks with a casual flick of her wrist. As the group continued to prepare, Adam fastened the rope securely around his waist and sat down, gripping the door frame tightly.
"Hey, guys, what if this doesn't work? I mean, I know I'm strong, but this goes way beyond our training scenarios. What if I can't do it?" Adam asked nervously, his usual confidence shaken by the enormity of what they were attempting.
"Adam, strength doesn't just come from your muscles. It also comes from your mind." Bree reassured him, trying to boost his confidence.
"Okay, maybe someone else should take the rope." Chase suggested.
"This is everything we've prepared for! You can do this!" Bree encouraged Adam, sitting down and wrapped her arms around his waist. "Just believe in yourself! I believe in you!"
"I believe in you, too!" Chase chimed in, joining Bree and sitting down behind his sister, wrapping his arms around her waist for support.
"I just spent four hours in a bag without a bathroom- I think my support goes without saying!" Leo said as he joined the group on the ground.
"Okay, here we go. Twenty seconds." Chase announced.
Suddenly, Bree's phone rang, cutting through the tension like a knife. Everyone turned to her in surprise.
"Hello?" She greeted, answering the call. Her eyes widened as she gasped loudly, causing everyone to look at her with panicked expressions. "What? Oh no!"
"What?!"
"What is it now?"
"Caitlin just broke up with Rodney!" Bree informed them, clearly shocked by the news. Adam gasped in surprise.
"Bree, this is serious!" Chase snapped, shooting her a pointed look, frustrated at the timing of her distraction.
Bree clutched the phone to her chest. "I know! They've been dating for like three months!"
"Oh, hey, can I talk to her for a sec?" Chase wondered, holding out his hand for the phone. Bree reluctantly passed it over, but before she could protest, Chase chucked the phone off the side of the train with a mischievous grin.
Everyone erupted into laughter, except for Bree, whose mouth hung open in shock. She stared after the phone as it vanished into the distance, her expression a mix of disbelief and confusion.
"That was a good one." Adam commented, chuckling at Chase's audacity.
"Okay, guys! Five seconds!" Chase said, pulling everyone back into focus.. "Four, three, two, one!"
Harper's heart raced as she watched her friends through the camera feed. The train lurched violently to the right, sending everyone inside careening. The brakes screamed against the tracks as the train began to screech in protest.
Adam, Bree, Chase and Leo clung to each other, their faces filled with terror as the seconds dragged on. Then, just as quickly, the lights flickered and the camera feed cut out. The screen went dark.
••••
Harper stared at the monitor, her eyes fixed on the black screen, still trying to make sense of what had just happened. Her heart raced, and she could feel the anxiety creeping up her chest.
The seconds felt like hours as she waited for a sign that her friends were okay.
Pacing back and forth in the lab, she ran her fingers through her hair in frustration, replaying the moment over and over in her mind when Adam, Bree, Chase and Leo had taken that final leap of faith to stop the runaway train.
"Guys!" Harper called out, her voice slightly shaky as she anxiously reached for her earpiece. "Guys, are you okay?"
"We're fine." Bree reassured.
Harper's heart skipped a beat and she whirled around to find the exhausted group of four standing at the other end of the Lab. A wave of relief washed over her and she let out a deep sigh, her tension easing as she walked toward them.
Chase, ever the reliable one, met her halfway. Without a second thought, he pulled her into a hug, his arms wrapping around her waist and Harper felt a sense of comfort she hadn't realized she'd been missing. She smiled up at him and they held each other for a moment, just taking in the warmth of the embrace.
"I was worried when the camera cut off." Harper confessed, her voice soft as she pulled away slightly, meeting Chase's gaze with sincerity.
"Clearly we're alive." Adam said.
Harper couldn't help but smile. "At least your first mission was a success."
The five of them shared a knowing look, one of relief and pride, before they pulled each other into a tight embrace. It was a rare moment of calm after all the chaos they'd just gone through and for once, they were all just thankful to be together and safe.
