11| BACK FROM THE FUTURE

In the Lab, Harper sat comfortably next to Leo in a swivel chair, sharing a bowl of pretzels while they listened to Adam, Bree and Chase, who were in their mission suits, receive their mission instructions from Mr. Davenport.

Leo was typing away at Mr. Davenport's computer, his eyes glued to the screen, but he managed to sneak a few handfuls of pretzels when he thought no one was looking.

"Okay, your mission supplies are packed, the schematics have been uploaded into Chase's chip, and your transport is on the way." Mr. Davenport informed the bionic siblings. "Did I forget something?"

"No. We'll just guess what the mission is and see how it all plays out." Bree replied sarcastically.

Harper popped a pretzel in her mouth and casually set the bowl on the desk next to Leo.

Mr. Davenport sighed, clearly unbothered by Bree's sarcasm. "All right. A particle collider is a three-mile-long underground facility where scientists-"

"Race subatomic particles at each other at light speed for energy experiments." Chase finished excitedly. "It's so cool!"

"I know." Mr. Davenport agreed.

Both of them did a little finger wiggle and chanted in unison. "Deedle-deedle-dee!"

"There is a particle collider in Berkley. That is accelerating out of control and your mission is to shut it down." Mr. Davenport continued.

"Oh! Awesome!" Adam cheered excitedly before leaning towards Bree and Chase. "I hope one of us knows how to do that."

"Okay. We have to act quickly. The scientists that operate the facility- Scuse me." Mr. Davenport said, moving Harper and Leo away from his desktop before started typing on the keyboard. "Have already evacuated the control center, and if we don't shut it down in time, it will create a massive black hole that will implode the entire planet."

"Today?!" Leo exclaimed in astonishment and horror. "No, that's not gonna work. Today is Shelly's Evan's birthday party and her mom makes the best cupcakes!"

Mr. Davenport, Adam, Bree and Chase stared at him, confused and a bit exasperated.

"Yeah, because that's what's important." Harper remarked sarcastically, shooting Leo a raised eyebrow.

"I'm just sayin' that woman doesn't skip on the sprinkles." Leo responded casually.

Mr. Davenport shook his head. He patted Leo's shoulder in a gesture of reassurance. "Don't worry, Leo, you will get your cupcakes. Adam, Bree and Chase have all the training they need to shut the collider down."

With that, the group began to move towards the cyber desk, with Leo and Harper trailing behind, still processing the gravity of the situation.

"I don't know, Big D. I think these guys are gonna need some.... backup!" Leo chorused, striking a heroic pose.

"Yeah, and that's why you're gonna be backup here with me and Harper in the lab." Mr. Davenport responded matter-of-factly.

Adam laughed. "Oh, he said 'backup' and you said 'backup'. Saying things twice makes it funny! Oh! Saying things twice makes it fun-"

"Stop it!" Mr. Davenport interrupted sharply, his patience clearly wearing thin.

Suddenly, a strange blue sphere materialized above them, casting an eerie glow across the room. It floated downward, rotating slowly as it descended to the floor.

"No, no, no!" A voice shouted from inside the sphere.

The room fell silent for a moment.

The group screamed, terrified of the intruder. Adam instinctively leaped into Chase's arms, while Bree ducked behind the desk, her heart racing. Mr. Davenport placed himself in front of Harper and Leo, who clung to each other in fear, his arms outstretched as if to shield them from whatever was coming.

"Nobody panic! Probably just the cable guy." Mr. Davenport reassured.

The intruder stepped out of the machine and removed his glasses with a familiar grin spread across his face. "Come on, Big D. I just came from seven years in the future. Your time travel machine actually worked! It's me! Leo!"

Harper, Leo and Mr. Davenport all jumped back in surprise. The confusion in the room was palpable as everyone processed the shocking sight before them.

Adam approached Leo cautiously. "Woah. The cable guys got the same name as you!"

Leo stepped out from behind Mr. Davenport and moved toward his future self, clearly more intrigued than frightened. "Wait. If you're really me, then you'd know the handshake I came up with in case I ever became a spy."

"Requesting authentication double-o Leo." Future Leo replied with a grin.

Without missing a beat, both Leos performed an elaborate secret handshake, the room filling with the sound of slaps and high-fives.

Leo's face lit up with excitement as he bounced up and down. "It really is me!"

"So, you're the future version of him?" Mr. Davenport asked in awe as he looked between the two Leos. Future Leo nodded enthusiastically. "Do you know what this means? I cracked time travel! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Can you do me a favor? When I see you in seven years can you remind me to tell me how awesome I am? Lemme high-five that."

"Oh, I'm sure you won't forget." Both Leos said in perfect harmony, sending a wave of amusement through the group.

"Hey, he just said what I said!"

"Technically, I just said what I said."

"Okay, you're gonna have to stop doing that."

"Stop."

"Stop!"

Finally, Future Leo covered Leo's mouth with his hand before turning his attention back to Adam, Bree and Chase. "It's so good to see you guys!"

"It's good to see you too." Chase said with a smile before Future Leo hugged the bionic siblings tightly. "Older, yet strangely similar Leo."

After embracing them, Future Leo turned to Harper and with surprising strength, lifted her off the ground in an enthusiastic hug. "Harper!"

"Hi, Leo." Harper greeted, laughing as she returned the hug before setting back down.

"So, uh.... what did time travel feel like? Did your body mass increase exponentially as you accelerated towards light speed?" Mr. Davenport asked.

"Uh, I pushed the button, felt a lot of wind, there was a big flash, but yeah, mass and speed stuff." Future Leo explained in a casual tone.

Adam stepped towards Future Leo. "So, if you're from the future.... what colors are my eyes?"

Future Leo gave him a puzzled look, unable to answer the ridiculous question.

"Ignore him." Bree intervened, linking arms with Future Leo and pulling him towards the time machine. "Come on, Future Leo, let's jump to 2025 and see what people are wearing. Cause I wanna start now and be a trendsetter."

Future Leo chuckled, shaking his head. "Sorry, but it took Big D years to scrape together enough zanol fuel for me to come back here once and go back."

Bree sighed. "Fine. But if I end up wearing mum jeans and hair scrunchies, you are gonna get back in that thing and fix it."

Just then, Mr. Davenport's phone buzzed with a reminder about the mission. "Oh, the collider mission." He said before turning to the bionic siblings. "You guys have to get ready. Head to the equipment room and gear up."

Bree waved at Future Leo as she followed the others out. "Nice to meet you, Future Leo!"

"Congrats on growing out of your awkward stage!" Adam added, grinning broadly.

Harper chuckled as the bionic teens hurried out of the Lab to prepare for their mission. The room fell into a brief lull as Future Leo watched them go, a thoughtful expression crossing his face.

"Hey, why didn't you just bring future Adam, Bree, Chase and Harper with you?" Leo asked his older self, a mischievous grin spreading across his face and pointed his finger. "Let me guess. You just hopped in the time machine and took off without them. That is so future me."

Future Leo's expression shifted, his smile fading slightly. "Actually.... that's why I'm here. Adam, Bree and Chase don't make it to the future."

"What?" Harper gasped, her voice full of shock. "Why? What do you mean-"

"Oh, no! Oh, no!" Adam's voice echoed through the room as he sprinted back into the Lab. "Forgot to pack my pudding."

Harper couldn't help herself. She rolled her eyes, a long-suffering sigh escaping her lip while Adam hurriedly grabbed his pudding from the counter and, as quickly as he had entered, ran back out of the Lab with it clutched tightly in his hands.

"Wait, where's Harper then?" Leo asked in a mix of confusion and concern as he turned to his future self. He was trying to make sense of everything, but it didn't add up. If Bree, Chase and Adam weren't part of the future, what did that mean for Harper?

"Future Harper doesn't know I'm here. I didn't want to tell her just in case it didn't work." Future Leo explained, a small frown pulling at his lips.

The room fell silent for a beat.

Leo furrowed his eyebrows. "But why wouldn't you want to tell her?"

Future Leo sighed, his expression grim. "It's complicated." He replied, rubbing the back of his neck. "I didn't want to risk changing anything, especially if things weren't supposed to turn out this way. I needed to make sure I had everything right before I involved anyone else. It's... it's a risk."

••••

The elevator doors slid open with a soft ding, and Future Leo, Leo, Harper and Mr. Davenport stepped out. They made their way towards the kitchen, a strange tension hanging in the air after everything they had just learned.

Harper still couldn't wrap her head around the news that Adam, Bree and Chase didn't make it to the future. How could that possibly be? What did it mean for them?

"What do you mean Adam, Bree and Chase don't make it to the future?" Mr. Davenport asked, looking at Future Leo for answers.

"You sent me back here with a video that will explain everything." Future Leo said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small device.

He placed it on the counter and the device began to beep and whir, grabbing everyone's attention. A small screen flickered to life, and they all gathered around.

Leo's eyes widened in amazement. "Whoa, what is that?"

"It's a holophone." Future Leo replied, giving a small smile at Leo's enthusiasm.

"I invented the holophone?" Mr. Davenport asked, a proud smile forming on his face as he admired the technology.

"No. But you did wait in line for six days to get one." Future Leo replied.

Harper stared at the screen, as a figure appeared on it: Future Davenport. The man on the screen looked much older - his hair was gray, disheveled and he sported a full beard and mustache. His face was rounder and he wore a knitted sweater that looked slightly too tight for him. His work desk in front of him was cluttered with takeout containers and half-empty cups.

"Greetings, past Donald." Future Davenport said, his voice slightly muffled through the holophone.

Mr. Davenport, still processing what he was seeing, stuttered as he stared at his future self. "That's me?" He asked in shock. "Please tell me the holophone adds a hundred pounds."

"Even if it did, what about the other two hundred?" Harper quipped, her voice full of playful sarcasm.

"The next seven years are pretty hard on you, Big D." Future Leo added with a grin.

Leo, chuckling, nudged his older self. "Or should I say bigger D?"

The room erupted with laughter at the joke, but they quickly fell silent when Mr. Davenport shot them a stern look, his patience wearing thin.

"If you are watching this, we cracked time travel. Ha ha! Inter-dimensional high five!" Future Davenport exclaimed, throwing his hand up for a high five with his past self.

"I just high-fived my future self!" Mr. Davenport marveled, watching the screen in awe as the Leo's stared at him. "What! Look at me! Let me have some joy!"

"I sent Leo back in time to stop you from sending Adam, Bree and Chase on the particle collider mission." Future Davenport said.

"What? Why?"

"Now, I'm sure you're asking 'What? Why?'"

Mr. Davenport smiled. "I know myself so well. You know."

"As a scientist, I am loath to change the past, but in this case, I have to make an exception. Adam, Bree and Chase don't return from the mission. Send an automated rover in their place. It's the only chance we have to save them." Future Davenport explained. "Oh, and by the way, every time you say, 'hey, I think this calls for a cookie,' think about this...."

Future Davenport lifted his shirt, revealing a rather alarming sight. Everyone screamed in horror. Leo and Harper quickly covered their eyes, while Future Leo reached for the device and quickly turned it off.

"How could I send them on a mission they don't return from?" Mr. Davenport muttered in disbelief, his face a mix of confusion and guilt.

"And how could you let your hair recede with so many trusted over-the-counter remedies available?" Leo couldn't help but joke, raising an eyebrow.

Mr. Davenport frowned. "If Adam, Bree, or Chase hear any of this, it'll shake their confidence in future missions or their confidence in me. Please tell me you won't say anything to them."

"I promise." Both Harper and Future Leo said in unison.

Mr. Davenport glanced at Leo, waiting for him to confirm.

Leo simply pointed at his older self. "Future me. Speaks for the both of us."

There was a brief silence as everyone took in the gravity of the situation. The future was rapidly becoming more uncertain with each passing moment and Mr. Davenport knew there wasn't much time to waste.

"There's not much time. The collider situation's getting worse by the hour. I gotta go build that robot." Mr. Davenport said urgently.

Just then, the elevator doors slid open and Adam, Bree and Chase walked into the kitchen, their bags slung over their shoulders.

"We're good to go, Mr. Davenport. We'll check in once we reach delta point." Chase informed.

"No!" Mr. Davenport exclaimed, his voice rising in panic. "Uh, I-I mean the mission's off."

Adam looked at him, puzzled. "But you said it was urgent."

"Did I say 'urgent'?" Mr. Davenport stammered, clearly flustered. "I think I said 'urging'. It was like I was urging you not to go on the mission."

"Why?" Bree asked, her eyebrows furrowing in confusion.

"Because I'm sending an automated rover that can shut down the collider via remote." Mr. Davenport explained. "As soon as I build it."

Chase burst out laughing. "An automated rover? You might as well send a handbag on a skateboard. The three of us can handle-"

"No!" Mr. Davenport shouted sharply. "I said no, and I mean it! My decision is final. Now just.... everybody go get ready for school."

Adam, Bree and Chase exchanged glances, clearly frustrated but not wanting to argue further. With a collective sigh, they turned and headed back to the elevator, their spirits dampened but their curiosity still piqued.

After they left, Future Leo put a hand on Mr. Davenport's shoulder. "Thank you. Future you would thank you too, Big D."

"Or should we say 'bald'-D?" Leo teased with a grin.

The room burst into laughter once more as Mr. Davenport touched his hair with a hint of embarrassment.

••••

The school day passed in a blur as Future Leo spent the hours with Leo and Harper. He couldn't help but feel a mix of nostalgia and sadness as he observed his younger self interact with the people he cared about. They were all so much younger, still unaware of the trials that lay ahead.

As they walked from class to class, Future Leo's mind kept drifting to the woman he'd left behind in the future: Future Harper. He remembered how she had always managed to hide her sadness behind a bright smile after the tragic loss of Adam, Bree and Chase. Even when the weight of their absence became too much to bear, Future Harper had stayed strong, for Leo, Mr. Davenport and even Tasha. She had always put others' well-being above her own, prioritizing their needs even when her heart ached.

After school, Leo, Future Leo and Harper visited the Lab to check in with Mr. Davenport, who was working tirelessly on the rover for the particle collider mission.

"Hey, Big D. I got an 'A' on my history test." Leo boasted as they walked into the Lab.

Mr. Davenport looked up from his work and removed his protective mask. "Yeah? Did you cheat by getting the answers from future you?"

Harper grinned. "Definitely."

The Leos exchanged glances and then turned to Mr. Davenport. "So, how's the rover coming along?"

"Almost ready." Mr. Davenport replied. But as if on cue, the rover sparked and caused a small explosion. The room filled with the smell of burnt electronics. "You know what, are you sure Adam, Bree and Chase don't make it?"

"Here, I'll show you. We downloaded the security camera footage from the control room." Future Leo responded.

He pulled out a small device from his pocket. A screen flickered to life in front of them, showing footage from the security cameras in the control room. On the screen, Chase was using his force field to power down the collider.

Mr. Davenport smiled. "Well, they shut it down. They completed their mission. You came back from the future for nothing. I think this calls for a cookie."

"You haven't seen the ending." Future Leo reminded him, his tone suddenly serious.

The footage continued, showing Adam, Bree and Chase celebrating their success. But then, without warning, the room began to shake. Debris started falling from the ceiling and the camera glitched as chunks of concrete crashed down on the bionic teenagers. The screen went black, cutting out abruptly.

Harper gasped, her hand flying to her mouth in shock. Leo, too, stared at the screen in disbelief. They turned to Future Leo for answers.

"Scratch that cookie." Mr. Davenport muttered grimly. "I gotta make this thing mission ready."

"Aha! So, it's still not mission ready." Chase's voice came from the back entrance as he entered the Lab with Adam and Bree. "Why wouldn't you just let us go?"

"No, no, no, that won't be necessary. I just need to buy a few things.... from NASA. They're having a sale. Everything is a million off. I'll be gone for a couple of hours. Leo, you're in charge." Mr. Davenport declared as he picked up the rover and headed out of the Lab.

"You got it, Big D." Both Leo's responded in unison.

"Future Leo." Mr. Davenport clarified as he disappeared through the Lab doors, leaving the group behind.

"Aw, come on!" Leo exclaimed, his frustration evident.

Adam frowned. "He thinks this mission's too big for us."

"It's not that he thinks it's too big..." Leo started.

"Leo. We promised." Future Leo warned softly.

"I guess Davenport just lost confidence in us." Bree said in disappointment as she crossed her arms.

Chase, stuffing his hands in his pockets, faced his siblings with a scowl. "Or he lost confidence in you two."

Harper's eyes widened, shocked by Chase's words. "Chase!"

"What is that supposed to mean?" Bree demanded, narrowing her eyes at him.

"Yeah, I'm the one always carrying you two. You're the weak links." Adam argued.

"Oh, I'm the weak link. You can't even spell weak link." Chase shot back.

"Can too."

"You're brain dead-"

"What are you talking about?"

Harper sighed deeply, watching the siblings argue. It seemed like everything had fallen apart in an instant. She couldn't stand seeing them fight.

"Guys." She called out, but they ignored her. "GUYS!"

The bionic siblings stopped and turned to face the Leo's and Harper. Tension hung heavy in the air.

"Enough!" Leo scolded, raising his voice. "Future me came back here to warn Davenport not to let you go on the mission because you don't come back from it."

"God! I never listen to myself!" Future Leo exclaimed in frustration.

"Don't come back?" Adam repeated in confusion.

"Wow. I guess this means we're not invincible." Bree said sadly.

Chase nodded slowly, his face grim. "It all makes sense now. This is why Mr. Davenport forbade us to go."

"Nice going." Future Leo sarcastically remarked to his younger self.

Harper stepped forward, her eyes determined. "He's right." She said, her voice steady. "They were gonna tear each other apart if they kept arguing. I mean, you didn't come back here for nothing. You came back to stop them from making the same mistake."

••••

Harper walked down the quiet street, her thoughts racing. She had just left the Lab with Leo and Future Leo, who were busy preparing for Leo's date with Janelle tonight.

But something about the day still felt off. She couldn't shake the feeling that things weren't going to turn out as planned.

A car suddenly pulled over beside her and Leo stepped out.

"Leo?" Harper called out in confusion. "What are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be with Jan-"

"Adam, Bree and Chase went on the mission!" Leo interrupted urgently, holding out a note.

"'Dear Mr. Davenport, we went to stop the collider. We know we won't make it back, but that's a small price to pay to save you, Leo, Harper, and the rest of the world. P.S. Sorry, we get blown up.'" She read the letter.

A cold chill ran down Harper's spine, but without hesitation, she climbed into the car. Leo jumped into the driver's seat, and with a swift motion, Future Leo sped off. The acceleration pushed them both back into their seats and Harper nervously tapped her fingers against her knees, her mind spinning. The note had shaken her, but she couldn't let herself panic - not yet.

After what felt like an eternity, they arrived at their destination.

The two Leos and Harper rushed into the building, ignoring the confused protests of the employees as they slipped away unnoticed.

Future Leo led the way, pulling them through a metal door into a long white tunnel. Leo and Harper followed him, their footsteps echoing against the sterile walls as they sprinted to find their friends.

"Guys!" Leo and Harper called out as they neared the bionic siblings.

"What's Leo and Harper doing there?" Mr. Davenport's voice crackled through the rover, still connected to the Lab.

"Did you shut down the collider?" Leo asked, breathless.

"Yeah, we just finished." Chase confirmed.

"Then get out of there!" Harper urged, her heart pounding.

"The room's about to collapse." Future Leo added from behind them, his voice grim.

"What?" Adam, Bree and Chase asked simultaneously.

Suddenly, a deep rumble shook the floor beneath them. Particles of debris rained down from the ceiling, followed by larger chunks of rock. Leo threw his bag on the floor, his eyes wide with fear as he looked at Harper.

Without another word, they both rushed towards Adam, Bree and Chase, shoving them out of harm's way just as the ceiling came crashing down.

"No! No!" Mr. Davenport's anguished cry echoed through the rover.

"Leo! Harper!" Adam, Bree and Chase shouted, running toward the pile of rubble.

Bree frowned. "Harper and Leo just saved our lives. That was supposed to be us."

"They didn't need bionics to be heroes." Chase said.

"Leo owed me five bucks." Adam added, casually resting his arm on Future Leo's shoulder.

Chase furrowed his eyebrows as he glanced at Future Leo. "Wai-Wait a second. If Leo's gone, then shouldn't you be gone too?"

Future Leo shrugged. "I don't know. This is all new to me."

"Leo's still in there! Harper as well! Adam, dig them out!" Bree shouted, urgency in her voice.

Adam wasted no time. He grunted with effort, lifting large rocks and debris to reveal Leo and Harper, trapped beneath a heavy section of collapsed ceiling. Dust clung to their clothes, and their faces were smudged, but they were alive. Their eyes met the bionic siblings', frustration and exhaustion written across their faces.

"Next time when we say 'get out', get out!" Leo shouted.

"Yeah. Chase, I thought you had ultra-sensitive bionic hearing!" Harper added, her voice laced with irritation.

Adam stretched out his arms and helped both Leo and Harper to their feet, his face beaming with relief. Bree immediately went to Harper, wrapping her arms around her in a tight embrace.

"I'm so happy you're alive!" Adam exclaimed happily, lifting Leo into the air in a moment of pure joy. He set him down again and extended his hand in front of him. "You owe me five bucks."

Harper couldn't help but smile despite the gravity of the situation. She was just happy to be alive, to have her friends with her and to know they hadn't lost anyone.

"Oh, no! The blast door is sealing!" Chase announced, panic rising in his voice. Adam screamed, rushing towards the exit. "Everyone out now!"

Harper didn't hesitate. She followed Adam, Bree and Leo as they bolted for the door, the sound of their hurried footsteps filling the tunnel as they made their way to safety. The blast door was closing in on them, but they made it just in time.

••••

The group stepped through the doors of the Lab, tired but relieved after everything that had happened. The intense ordeal at the collider was finally over and they were back where they started - safe. Mr. Davenport was already waiting for them, looking both relieved and stern.

Adam, Bree, Chase, Harper, Leo and Future Leo returned from the collider and entered the Lab where Mr. Davenport awaited them.

"Thank goodness you guys are alright." He said, pulling Adam, Bree and Chase into a tight hug. "What were you thinking?!" He immediately waved them back, his hands hovering in the air as he turned to point at Future Leo and Leo. "And you are grounded until... you become you." He proceeded to point at Harper. "And you are lucky your sister doesn't know anything about this!"

Harper raised an eyebrow but didn't say anything, realizing it was best to just let Mr. Davenport vent his frustrations.

"Look, Big D....I know you were worried but it all worked out. I-" Future Leo began, but Leo quickly cut him off with a playful jab to his older self's arm. "I mean we changed the course of the mission and saved Adam, Bree and Chase."

"I think what he's trying to say is if they saved the world and we saved them, then we saved the world!" Leo explained, striking a heroic pose again. Future Leo and Harper both joined in, striking their own poses, each of them sharing a proud smile with Leo.

"Still grounded." Mr. Davenport stated firmly. "By the way, Janelle dropped by. She seemed a little upset."

"Uh-oh." Future Leo muttered, his smile fading. He immediately pulled out his device, tapping a few buttons. The screen flashed and it showed an image of himself, but this time, instead of Janelle, there was a dog standing beside him.

Leo's eyes widened, and his jaw dropped in disbelief. "I end up alone with a dog?"

"You better fix this!" Future Leo snapped, looking at Leo with a sense of urgency. "I'm not walking down the aisle with that!"

Adam stood beside Future Leo. "Aw don't be silly. You can't bring a dog to the movies."

Future Leo sighed, putting the device away and walking over to Adam, Bree and Chase. "Well, now that you guys are safe, I guess I should head back to the future."

"Courtesy of me. I did that. I just like to remind everybody that I cracked time travel. That was me." Mr. Davenport reminded with a wide grin.

"Thanks for coming back for us." Chase said gratefully, giving Future Leo a nod.

"And for helping save our lives." Bree added sincerely

"Yeah, and for showing us that our time is precious, so if we're gonna make fun of Leo's height, gotta do it now." Adam chimed in, giving Leo a playful nudge on the head. Leo paused for a moment before slapping his abdomen with a grin.

Harper and Leo approached Future Leo, who was already inside the time travel machine, preparing to leave.

"It was nice seeing you, Future Leo. Thank you for helping them." Harper said, gesturing to the bionic siblings.

Future Leo smiled warmly. "No problem, Harper. It was nice to see you again."

"Stay smooth." Leo advised his older self with a playful grin.

Future Leo chuckled. "Only if you do. Enjoy the next seven years, man. They go by in the blink of an eye."

With one final press of a button, Future Leo activated the time travel machine. A shimmering sphere surrounded the machine, lifting it off the ground and shooting upwards toward the ceiling with a burst of light. Within moments, the machine disappeared, leaving nothing but a faint hum in the air.

"Wow." Leo said softly, feeling emotional. "I miss me already."
